North Korean hackers implicated in $600 million hacks of Axie Infinity Platform

The US Treasury linked the North Korean hacker group Lazarus to last month’s attack that extracted more than $600 million from Ronin.

According to US federal agents, the North Korea-based hacker group Lazarus got connected to the hacking of more than $600 million into the Ronin platform. This network backs up the popular video game Axie Infinity.

The US Treasury Department assured the hackers’ connection to the recent attack in an update to its list of punished entities. According to some reports, the government agency’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Thursday included an Ethereum wallet address previously detected as the Ronin bridge exploiter.

According to CoinDesk, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis also determined in a tweet that the address had a crucial role in the Ronin attack. The Ronin team improved a previous blog post about the attack, suggesting that the FBI had linked Lazarus to the breach and that the Treasury Department gave sanctions to the funds.

Lazarus has Connections with the Attack on Ronin

US authorities have previously described Lazarus as a North Korean “state-sponsored hacking entity teamed up by experts in crypto. Its first attacks date back to 2009. It has been allegedly responsible for prominent hacks, including a 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack, the 2014 Sony Pictures breach, and a series of attacks on pharmaceutical entities in 2020.

Ronin Network is a sidechain linked to the Ethereum main net created by Sky Mavis, the creators of Axie, to support faster and cheaper operations for the game. The bridge went through one of the most significant hacking attacks last month, in which it lost at least $625 million worth of ETH and USDC.

The Ronin attack happened on March 23, but it was not until a week after the attack got unveiled. At the time, the Ronin team stopped the bridge. It determined that it was working with various US government agencies and Chainalysis to discover all those responsible for the attack.

19% of Stolen Funds Already Got Laundered

Overall, the Ronin and Sky Mavis teams have made strenuous efforts to fix what happened. The creators of Axie have already collected $150 million to reimburse users who lost money due to the attack. They are also offering a $1 million reward to hackers who can identify “severe” vulnerabilities in the network.

Meanwhile, hackers have been doing their thing to liquidate the funds. As reported by Blockworks, the attackers attempted to sell around 6,500 stolen ETH in March, transferring the tokens to three different exchanges. Meanwhile, all the stolen USDC got moved to various DeFi wallets and protocols, Etherscan shows.

Etherscan data also shows that more than 3,000 ETH, or at least $9.9 million, got removed from the wallet Wednesday to another address that then migrated the currencies in transaction batches to various wallets. Although more than USD 400 million remains static, the Elliptic determined that 19% of the extracted coins got already laundered.

A Study Indicates that Bitcoin Traders Share Some Positive Traits with Psychopaths

The researchers said that not all those interested in cryptocurrencies are psychopaths, but measuring them through that approach allows understanding why they want to invest. According to Carnegie Mellon University, describing someone as having psychopathic traits because he makes risky investments could cause confusion and misunderstandings.

A group of researchers conducted a survey to determine whether people interested in cryptocurrencies have psychopathic, narcissistic or sadistic personality traits. Ninety percent of the 566 online respondents show those characteristics, which has aroused much controversy in the ecosystem.

Di Wang, Brett Martin, and Jun Yao, the marketing specialists in charge of the study, talked about those traits. They highlighted that not all those interested in cryptocurrencies have a psychopathic, narcissistic or sadistic attitude. However, they pointed out that measuring them through that approach allows a better understanding of why they want to buy crypto assets.

Analyzing the behavior of those people through the psychological lens of those mental disorders seems somewhat biased and careless. The truth is that those having those traits do not necessarily have psychological problems.

Minna Lyons, a research doctor from the psychology school of the University of Liverpool, referred to those traits as the dark tetrad. She explained that they are part of the daily behavior of humans and argued that they could even be beneficial. However, she said that they only caused problems if they interfered with self-control and caused people to harm others and themselves.

Although Bitcoin Traders Have Dark Tetrad Traits

According to Lyon, the traders of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies may have psychopathic, narcissistic, or sadistic traits. She argued that they are normal in human beings, as long as they do not affect them or others.

Val-U firm CEO Andrés Urquiola commented that only people who are somewhat psychopathic would trade Bitcoin. He said they need to control their emotions to operate that crypto asset as it is high risk due to its price fluctuations. That characteristic is a strength instead of a weakness in this case and does not mean that they have a mental disorder.

The world of cryptocurrencies is not an isolated case, as there may be people with dark tetrad traits in different fields. Psychiatrist Lola Morón believes that executives, politicians, and other people holding high-responsibility positions can have them.

Professor Robert Hare, an expert in psychopathy at the University of British Columbia, agrees. He stated that they need the ability to withstand high-pressure environments without letting emotions and the interest in power, prestige and money carry them away. Carnegie Mellon University also identifies traders of traditional investments, such as the stock market.

However, describing someone as having psychopathic traits because they make risky investments or manage their emotions could be inappropriate. It could also cause confusion and misunderstandings, affecting the entire community and the owners of cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin analyst Will Clemente believes that linking dark tetrad traits to cryptocurrency traders instills fear, uncertainty, and doubt. For that reason, he advises being careful about using mental disorder terms to describe people, although they share some similarities.

DeFi Hackers Have found new Targets to Conduct their Attacks

0

The connection between networks is the Achilles heel of DeFi in 2022. Hacks that take advantage of flaws in these methods exceed USD 880 million.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols have suffered many attacks from cybercriminals over the last two years. In 2022, hackers seem to have found a new target to disrupt these networks, the bridges or bridges between networks.

According to a quarterly report revealed by CoinGecko, blockchain bridge hacks have already caused losses registered at more than $1 billion so far this year.

Bridges are connections that give the green light to digital assets to get sent and received between various platforms. According to the report, its relevance has increased as Ethereum lost dominance to other chains such as BNB Chain.

The total value locked (TVL) in Ethereum bridges has grown almost continuously since July of last year. Polygon already reigned over the spectrum at the time, with the advantage of being an Ethereum sidechain, giving immediate compatibility with the “queen” of Defi.

Bridges necessary for DeFi

As you can see in the chart below, Ethereum almost dominated the Defi space until February 2021. Since then, the growth of other networks has leveled the picture, although the network co-created by Vitalik Buterin is still ranked 55th. % From the market.

Bridge Attacks in DeFi

Media outlets have come to cover several attacks of this type, but one episode that had the most impact was that of the Ronin network, where the Play-to-Earn Axie Infinity game functions. A hacker took advantage of a “security breach” in a Ronin bridge to extract at least 174,000 ETH in late March.

Earlier, in early February, there was another major attack. It got suffered by Wormhole, a bridge between Solana and other networks, from which 120,000 ETH (USD 361 million) got stolen due to vulnerability in its code.

Finally, the report highlights that there are efforts under development to create more procedures that could enhance the security of these protocols. Options such as light clients, liquidity networks, and external validators got listed on page 30 of the document, each with its technical features that bring better security and confidence to these networks.

Experts have been working hard to solve this increasing problem for a long time. In mid-2021, during a developer conference, they explained that bridges are necessary for DeFi because they allow blockchains that use different languages to communicate.

Bitcoin Miners Will Unleash a Legal Battle against Sunacrip in Venezuela

0

The Sierramoros C. A legal team assured that it is ready to start a fight to defend the property right. Sunacrip takes the measures it considers appropriate for miners without a proper license.

A legal battle linked to Bitcoin (BTC) is about to happen in Venezuela. Sierramoros, the company that owns the Bitcoin miners that got confiscated in November of last year, would move all its legal resources to confront the National Cryptoactive Superintendence (Sunacrip). This entity confiscated the equipment alleging non-compliance with Venezuelan regulations.

The lawyer Carlos Marín Santeliz, a member of the legal team of Sierramoros C.A., the company from which many Bitcoin miners got seized in November, revealed the news. According to the lawyer, the company he works for will fight for its property right.

The lawyer highlights that the confiscation procedure applied by Sunacrip represents a violation of the presumption of good faith, which are constitutional rules in Venezuela, in addition to the right to property.

That is why the defenders of Sierramoros C.A. plan to go before the Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) to plea for the sentence.

The First National Contentious Administrative Court of Caracas ruled in favor of the miners last year right after Sunacrip seized a batch of equipment, alleging that they carried out activities without permission. Sierramoros had issued a charge of protection that favored them.

Subsequently, Sunacrip moved the case to the TSJ, which suspended the ruling favoring the miners in March of this year and assured the seizure of the devices. The TSJ highlighted the power of Sunacrip to influence issues linked to Bitcoin and its environment.

According to the lawyer, the legal team of the accused company did not formally notify about that move, which revoked the previous sentence filed by one of the Capital District courts, which ruled in favor of Sierramoros C.A.

In Venezuela, the new authorities of the Supreme Court of Justice are about to get appointed, something that might find some delay. Marín Santeliz highlighted that the appeal would run in parallel with the arrival of new judges and magistrates to the Judiciary.

The Most Drastic Measures

According to the Constituent Decree on the Comprehensive Cryptoactive System, approved in Venezuela, there are preventive sanctioning procedures for those who are mining digital assets without prior licenses set up by Sunacrip.

In article 37, the legislation states that if during Sunacrip audit indications of non-compliance with the established obligations are detected, at least three measures could be taken: suspension of licenses (if any), sanctions provided for in the current legal system (which is at the discretion of Sunacrip) and the confiscation of equipment.

The latter, in the words of Marín Santeliz, is one of the most radical procedures taken by the government entity, violating, in his opinion, the principle of proportionality, which refers to the possibility of applying sanctions according to the infraction committed.

Carlos Maslatón Predicts the Bitcoin Price Might Rise above USD 100,000 in the Short Term

The Argentine analyst said the price of Bitcoin could reach between USD 96,000 and USD 116,000 in the short term. He finds it illogical to think of the possibility of banning BTC thanks to all the support the crypto world has received.

Argentine financial market analyst, bitcoiner, and lawyer Carlos Maslatón recently predicted that the value of Bitcoin might increase significantly. He also introduces himself on his Twitter account as a Manchesterian right-wing liberal at the vanguard of anti-communism.

The Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) organized some talks on cryptocurrencies, where Maslatón discussed the future of Bitcoin.

The main features of the Bitcoin project that Maslatón highlighted are its decentralized nature and its limited supply. He also mentioned that it allows for transactions without intermediaries and provides financial freedom to transfer value at any time.

The expert considers that the pioneering cryptocurrency is a ban-proof financial product.

Maslatón Predicts that Bitcoin Will Be above USD 100,000

Carlos Maslatón stated that the price of Bitcoin will be close to USD 400,000 in just one year. However, he said it will not reach that level immediately but will first climb gradually.

He predicted that it could reach between USD 96,000 and USD 116,000 in the short term. The bullish trend pushing Bitcoin to unseen levels would explain that increase.

The Argentine lawyer considers a new upward trend to foresee two price targets: USD 96,000 and USD 116,000. Maslatón also predicts that the value of Bitcoin may even reach USD 399,000 in the longer term. However, he clarified that the latter would only occur if it did not drop below USD 37,500.

He believes that there will be no direct way for the price to rise if it goes down from that level. He explained that people cannot always think the same way in economics, as the market must confirm their opinions.

The financial market analyst confessed he was not interested in buying meme coins like Shiba and DOGE or non-fungible tokens (NFT).

He Considers that It Is Impossible to Ban Bitcoin

Carlos Maslatón believes it is impossible to ban Bitcoin as it is a sanction-proof financial product.

He compared prohibiting Bitcoin to banning the sun or the moon, which is impossible. He finds it illogical to think that someone could stop it, as all the support for the crypto world is unstoppable.

Curiously, Maslatón thinks that the price will possibly reach USD 1 million in the distant future Bitcoin. The analyst noted that this is indirectly the dominant trend.

Finally, he told investors to see the Bitcoin price with calm, not with nervousness. He pointed out that those who only believe in the fundamentals buy when it rises or sell because it is down».

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 40,192 and has accumulated a 0.6% loss over the last 24 hours. Its trading volume is above USD 16.39 billion, and its market capitalization is about USD 764.81 billion.

Environmental Implications of Ethereum Consensus Method Change

Switching from proof of work to proof of stake would mean reducing carbon footprint, among other things.

Currently, the Ethereum network and other Blockchains, such as the Bitcoin network itself, operate using the proof of work (PoW) consensus that demands computing power to solve the new blocks that are added to the chain. When Bitcoin began to operate on its own network, the decision seemed logical, since it was possible to mine blocks with a laptop without difficulty, but eventually, the power needed to solve the blocks rose so much that it has been a long time since it has only been possible to mine those blocks with specialized devices such as ASICs. Today, the need to change the consensus mechanism is more pressing due to several factors, such as the carbon footprint.

About Ethereum

Ethereum is the second most used network in the Blockchain sector and its innovation was the introduction of smart contracts. This network also operates in PoW but the arrival of version 2.0 of the network has long been expected to replace this consensus mechanism with proof of stake (PoS), in which it is possible to validate the blocks based on the coins that are staked. In this format, it is not necessary for so much computing power to validate the blocks.

However, due to the revaluation of ether in recent years, the cost of transactions has risen greatly and it is common to have to pay tens of dollars to send an NFT to another wallet or to validate any DeFi transaction, as it can be a swap between tokens or a deposit. This undoubtedly has reduced the benefits of operations, and has motivated many users to try other Blockchains with lower gas costs, such as BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, etc.

About Environmental Implications

In relation to the environment, the reduced use of IT equipment to validating blocks with the PoS consensus provides a more responsible way of using the energy resources destined for mining with a much smaller carbon footprint. We cannot reduce energy consumption to zero, but it is possible to greatly optimize the energy consumption of the equipment. Ultimately, the security of the network will increase by the change of consensus, as validators who do not do a good job will lose coins in the form of penalties.

In other words, Ethereum 2.0 would move to the consensus mechanism called proof of stake, or PoS, in which the miner has more influence not because of his computing capacity but because of his possession (or hold) of network coins, in this case, Ether. This change will be a setback for current miners, but they will be able – in principle – to adapt easily since those who have been in the sector for years must have held a certain amount of ETH in order to anticipate the transition.

In addition, with the coming of the Metaverse, many users are eagerly awaiting version 2.0 of Ethereum to take advantage of the updated network. Although there is still no confirmed date for its publication, it will not take too long and the community will benefit from the new features of this Blockchain.
