JPMorgan Considers that Bitcoin Remains in “Overbought Territory”

Recent data shows a slowdown in net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, calling into question the belief in a continued unidirectional flow of funds into this asset class.

Bitcoin (BTC) suffered a sharp correction over the past week before rebounding in recent days. However, even the popular cryptocurrency remains in “overbought territory,” suggesting that BTC could fall further, according to JPMorgan analysts.

JPMorgan Analysis in Brief

JPMorgan analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou wrote in a post on Thursday that JPMorgan futures position indicators and the Bitcoin futures price premium over the spot price suggest that Bitcoin is still “overbought.”

Furthermore, analysts have noted that these two metrics, so far, only indicate a “small liquidation of positions.”

“Both metrics indicate that Bitcoin remains in overbought territory despite last week’s sharp correction.” JPMorgan analysts indicated.

Likewise, despite the recent decline in BTC, there is strong optimism in the market about rising prices by the end of the year. This, driven by expectations of sustained demand through ETFs, despite a reduction in BTC supply as a result of the network’s Halving event.

“Indeed, as we approach halving, it is more likely that this profit taking will continue, especially, in a positioning context that still appears overbought despite last week’s correction,” the analysts pointed out.

However, recent data shows a slowdown in net inflows to spot bitcoin ETFs, challenging the belief in a continued unidirectional flow of funds into spot ETFs, according to analysts at JPMorgan.

“Indeed, as we approach the halving, it is more likely that this profit-taking will continue, especially in a positioning context that still appears overbought despite last week’s correction,” the analysts concluded.

JPMorgan Predicts Bitcoin Could Fall to $42,000 After Halving

JPMorgan analysts predicted in late February that the price of Bitcoin would likely fall to about $42,000 after the network halving, citing lower rewards for miners and higher production costs.

The Bitcoin network halving event will reduce BTC crypto miner rewards from the current 6.25 BTC per block to 3.125 BTC.

“The cost of production of a Bitcoin has empirically acted as a lower bound for BTC prices,” the analysts expressed. “The center point of our estimated production cost range currently sits at $26,500, which would automatically double after the halving event to $53,000,” they added.

Additionally, after the Halving event, crypto miners with below-average electricity costs and more efficient equipment “will likely survive.” However, those miners with high production costs “would have strong difficulties,” according to analysts.

Finally, the largest publicly traded crypto miners will be in a better position to withstand this “fight for survival,” according to experts, adding that similar to 2022, their market share is expected to increase after the reduction to half of the BTC network.

“There could also be some horizontal integration through mergers and acquisitions between Bitcoin miners across regions to take advantage of synergies in their businesses.” JPMorgan analysts concluded.

Despite the predictions of industry experts, it is impossible to predict with certainty what will happen. This is why investors should be aware of the risks and conduct their own research before making any investment decision in the crypto market.

OKX Will Cease Operations in India and Urges Users to Liquidate Their Holdings by April 30

According to recent reports, the decision comes in response to the regulatory hurdles the exchange faces in the country.

The cryptocurrency ecosystem in India faces a new challenge following the announcement by OKX, one of the most prominent cryptocurrency exchanges globally, about ceasing its operations in the country. This decision highlights the growing tensions between foreign exchange platforms and local regulators, marking a turning point in the cryptocurrency industry in India.

In a recent development, Seychelles-based company OKX, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, announced the closure of its services in India. Users were notified of the closure via a notice sent on Thursday, stating that OKX “no longer provides services to users in India” due to local regulations.

OKX, being among the nine foreign cryptocurrency exchanges blocked in India following compliance notices issued by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Ministry of Finance, has taken the decision to ask its users in India to close their accounts and withdraw their funds before April 30. This move underscores the difficulties cryptocurrency companies face operating within a still-developing Indian regulatory framework.

OKX Announces Exit from Indian Crypto Market

OKX’s notice urged users to take specific actions before the deadline. Users were ordered to close all margin positions, including perpetual, futures and options contracts, and redeem funds from betting products. Additionally, users were advised to withdraw all funds from their accounts.

After April 30, 2024, at 2 a.m. m. UTC, account functionalities would be restricted, although withdrawals of funds would still be allowed. OKX’s decision to exit the Indian market follows the issuance of an enforcement notice by India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) against nine foreign cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, KuCoin, Huobi, Kraken, Gate.io, Bittrex, Bitstamp, MEXC Global and Bitfinex.

The FIU alleged illegal operations and violations of local anti-money laundering (AML) regulations by the aforementioned exchanges. While the FIU blocked access to the websites of these exchanges with a two-week notice, some continued to provide services to existing clients through apps.

OKX was not among the exchanges named by the FIU in its compliance notice. However, the exchange had previously strengthened its know-your-customer (KYC) processes in India. Despite these efforts, OKX has now decided to completely withdraw its services from the country.

Navigating the Regulatory Landscape

Despite shutting down its operations in India, OKX is focusing on strengthening its operations in other regions. As previously reported, the exchange obtained licenses in Singapore and Dubai, demonstrating its interest in expanding its services globally.

Additionally, OKX has started operations in Türkiye’s local currency. The shutdown of OKX services in India highlights the challenges facing cryptocurrency exchanges due to the evolving regulatory landscape. As governments around the world continue to formulate their policies regarding cryptocurrencies, exchanges have to navigate a complex regulatory environment to ensure compliance and provide services to their users.

While OKX emphasizes the security of user funds and ensures that withdrawals will remain accessible, Indian users are encouraged to follow the exchange’s guidelines to protect their assets.

Currently, the total valuation of the crypto market capitalization is $2.44 trillion. This comes after a significant drop to $2.2 trillion on Wednesday, following a high of $2.7 trillion, which had not been reached since November 2021.

Bitcoin (BTC), on the other hand, has advanced in minimizing their losses. After experiencing a sharp decline to $60,900, it is now trying to regain stability above the $66,700 level.

Bitcoin Spot ETFs See Fourth Consecutive Day of Outflows

In the short term, investors should continue to consider the BTC spot ETF market flow data. However, comments on the Fed will also need consideration on Friday. Fed Chair Powell and FOMC members Michael Barr, Michelle Bowman and Philip Jefferson are on the economic calendar to speak on Friday.

On March 21, there was a net outflow of $94 million from the ten newly launched spot Bitcoin ETFs. Although the figure is lower than the previous three days, it represents another day in which funds have been withdrawn from institutional investment products.

Fund outflows on March 18, 19 and 20 amounted to $154 million, $326 million and $261 million, respectively, according to Farside Investors. Total net outflow for this week is currently $836 million, and Friday’s numbers have not yet been included. This suggests that the last two months of Bitcoin ETF hype have temporarily stopped as investors take profits.

Exiting ETF Funds

Grayscale, which has been losing BTC all month, saw a fresh outflow of $359 million on March 21. “GBTC has now lost 42.3% of its shares since becoming an ETF,” commented industry analyst James Seyffart.

GBTC currently holds 355,759 BTC, having lost 264,214 BTC since the conversion. Grayscale’s total outflow so far this week amounts to a whopping $1.83 billion.

ETF analyst Eric Balchunas commented the following:

“What a blow. I thought the worst was over. I suppose not. “Who’s leaving now that wasn’t motivated to do so in the last two months?”

Balchunas noted that the increase in departures from Grayscales was likely “related to bankruptcies due to size and consistency.”

He added that the Gemini/Genesis exits were likely purchasing BTC with cash; Therefore, the market was resisting.

In February, a bankruptcy judge allowed Genesis to liquidate approximately $1.3 billion in GBTC shares as part of its efforts to repay investors.

Balchunas said the worst is probably close to being over before adding: “Once it’s over, only retail will be left, and flows should look more like the February trickle.”

On March 21, research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence James Seyffart posted the following on X:

“$358.8 million out of $GBTC, outflows ain’t stopping. GBTC has now lost 42.3% of it’s shares since converting to an ETF.”

BlackRock Inflows Slow Down

BlackRock, which recently announced a new tokenized RWA fund, prevented Thursday’s outflow from being in the triple figures like the previous three days. IBIT had an inflow of $233.4 million on the day.

The fund’s total inflows for the week were $809 million. BlackRock had two very slow days on Tuesday and Wednesday as BTC prices plummeted.

The other seven funds had minimal inflows for March 21, with the Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCO) recording an outflow of $10 million.

Crypto markets had retreated 1.5% on the day, with total capitalization falling to $2.63 trillion recently.

Bitcoin Analysis

BTC held above the 50- and 200-day EMAs, sending bullish price signals. A BTC return to the $69,000 resistance level would give the bulls a run towards the $73,808 ATH. A break above the ATH could support a move towards the $75,000 level.

On Friday, BTC spot ETF flow data for March 21 and 22 needs investors’ attention. Conversely, a fall through the $64,000 support level could indicate a BTC decline towards the $60,365 support level.

The 14-day RSI reading of 52.64 indicates a move for BTC to ATH $73.808 before entering overbought territory.

FTX Victims Condemn SBF’s Role and Call for Justice as SBF Faces Sentence

Testimonies from FTX victims reveal the grim consequences of FTX’s collapse, fueling calls for justice as a 50-year sentence looms for Sam Bankman-Fried.

Dozens of Victim Impact Statements filed in court have revealed the harsh realities faced by customers of Sam Bankman-Fried’s now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. John Reed’s lengthy tweet reveals the situation faced by many victims who entrusted their financial future to FTX, and who now face devastating losses and shattered dreams.

Below is an extract from Reed’s post on X dated March 20, 2024:

“(…) U.S. SEC registration of financial firms: (1) mandates that investor funds and securities be handled appropriately without conflicts of interest; (2) ensures that investors understand the risks involved in purchasing the often illiquid and speculative securities that are traded on a cryptocurrency platform; (3) makes buyers aware of the last prices on securities traded over a cryptocurrency platform; and (4) provides adequate disclosures regarding their trading policies, practices and procedures. Overall, entities providing financial services must carefully handle access to, and control of, investor funds, and provide all users with adequate protection and fortification. (…)”

The Moscowitz law firm has shown some very sad letters from people hurt by the FTX ruling. These letters show how much investors suffered financially when FTX went bankrupt. The letters serve as a sobering reminder of the real-life carnage left behind by Bankman-Fried’s actions, as well as of the vulnerabilities inherent in the largely unregulated cryptocurrency landscape.

SBF Defense Challenges Prosecutor’s Narrative

SBF’s defense argues for a relatively moderate prison sentence of six years. Instead, prosecutors are taking a tougher stance, seeking a minimum sentence of between 40 and 50 years, along with a staggering $11 billion in forfeiture.

“With marked hostility, the memo distorts reality to support its precious ‘loss’ narrative and presents Sam as a depraved supervillain; He attributes dark and megalomaniacal motives to it that go against the album; makes apocalyptic prophecies of backsliding; and adopts a medieval view of punishment to arrive at what amounts to a recommendation of a death sentence in prison,” Bankman-Fried’s attorneys wrote. “That is not justice.”

Ultimately, attorneys argued that if authorities truly believed in their ability to reform, a substantial reduction in the recommended sentencing range of 63 to 78 months would be appropriate and sufficient.

As the sentencing hearing approaches on March 28, 2024, the heartbreaking accounts of FTX victims are a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of financial fraud and the urgency of regulatory oversight in the banking industry. cryptocurrencies.

Testimonies from FTX Victims Highlight Urgent Supervision

The testimonies describe a sad reality caused by the fraudulent schemes orchestrated by SBF and its associates. What was once a shining symbol of potential within the cryptocurrency space has deteriorated into a harrowing ordeal, shattering aspirations and eroding trust.

The devastating impact of FTX’s wrongdoing is profound and leaves behind a path of ruin. Crypto platforms such as FTX, Voyager, Terra, BlockFi, and Celsius have faced recent outages, raising concerns about investor security measures. The absence of financial oversight, transparency, and consumer protection in the cryptosphere contributed to these events, highlighting the need for improved regulatory frameworks to better protect investors.

Unlike conventional institutions, SEC-registered entities adhere to strict safeguards: protecting investor funds, ensuring understanding of risk, disclosing business practices, and providing investor protection mechanisms.

In contrast, crypto platforms operate without such oversight, potentially exposing investors to fraudulent activities without adequate security measures.

Goldman Sachs Remains Bullish on Bitcoin Despite Price Drop, and other News

The firm’s head of digital assets highlights the launch of Bitcoin spot ETFs in early January as a key factor that has influenced investor sentiment.

Goldman Sachs remains confident in Bitcoin despite the recent price drop to $60,000. Mathew McDermott, head of digital assets at the company, points to a significant increase in institutional investors in the cryptocurrency market, which was previously dominated by retail investors.

McDermott attributes this change to a growing interest in Bitcoin, even after a drop from its all-time high near $73,798.

Argentina Seeks Refuge in Bitcoin in the Face of Peso Instability

Argentina is going through a complex economic situation, with inflation reaching alarming levels, reaching up to 276%. In the midst of this recession, something interesting is happening: Argentinians are turning to Bitcoin as a way to protect their money.

For a long time, the US dollar has been the safe haven for Argentinians, but lately, it has lost some of its appeal. Instead, Bitcoin is proving to be a more effective alternative, as Bloomberg points out.

In the last two months, the Argentine peso has gained 10% compared to the dollar. However, in the same period, the value of Bitcoin has increased by 60% against the dollar.

Last week, the Lemon crypto platform, one of the most popular in Argentina, registered a record of 35 thousand Bitcoin purchase transactions. This is double last year’s seven-day average.

Tornado Cash Developer Accused of Laundering $1.2 Billion

The developer behind the well-known cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, Alexey Pertsev, is under accusation of laundering more than $1.2 billion, although prosecutors have not presented concrete arguments to support his claims.

According to prosecutors’ sources, Pertsev allegedly “had a habit of laundering money” through the Tornado Cash platform, and now faces the legal consequences of his actions. DL News reports detail these allegations, referencing a police document that supports the prosecution’s claims.

The accusations against Pertsev center on his alleged complicity in money laundering activities through Tornado Cash. Prosecutors have flagged at least 36 transactions they consider potentially illegal, sent to the cryptocurrency mixer.

SEC Extends Decision Deadline on VanEck Ethereum ETF, Seeking Public Comments

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced a delay in its decision schedule on the VanEck Ethereum ETF.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, the SEC has reported that it will extend the deadline until May 23, 2024 to make a decision on this ETF, also requesting public comments on the matter.

In its statement, the agency explained that it believes it is necessary to designate a longer period to evaluate the proposed rule change, as modified by Amendment No. 1, as well as to address the issues raised in connection with this fund.

Mexican Representative Proposes Regulating Blockchain Technology Use

Morena’s deputy, Jesús Roberto Briano Borunda, seeks to regulate blockchain through Financial Technology Institutions (ITF), of which 9% of the 1,359 are based on that technology. Roberto Briano sees it as a priority to create a legal framework to implement controls by authorities and in the financial sector.

To do this, the deputy suggests modifying articles 2, 48 and 56, which would force the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) to issue new provisions for the operation of blockchain technology in the ITF.

The Mexican regulator, the CNBV, should, if the initiative is approved, create security and information parameters on the use of blockchain in financial transactions, as well as confidentiality policies and account records in shipments.

Major Update on Ripple Lawsuit Against SEC, Bitcoin (BTC) Price Resurgence, and More

Bitcoin (BTC) partially recovered to around $66,500, possibly influenced by the Fed’s interest rate decision and upcoming tapering halving event. Ripple’s XRP received stock market support amid an SEC lawsuit, highlighting its regulatory challenges and market resilience. Solana-based meme coins such as Slerf and Book of Meme experienced significant price fluctuations, reflecting the speculative and volatile nature of the crypto market.

The lawsuit filed by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against Ripple Labs, the company behind Ripple (XRP), has turned out to be one of the most important regulatory battles in the history of the cryptocurrency.

In 2020, the SEC filed a lawsuit against Ripple Labs, alleging that it conducted an unregistered securities offering through the sale of its XRP tokens worth $1.3 billion. The lawsuit argued that XRP should be classified as a security, similar to stocks or bonds, and would therefore be subject to SEC regulation.

BTC Recovering Again

Last week, the price of the leading cryptocurrency soared to an all-time high of over $73,500. However, it failed to maintain the momentum, trickling below the $61 mark on March 20 amid a broader market correction.

Trends look much more positive today, March 21, with most digital assets in the green, while global market capitalization jumped above $2.6 trillion. BTC briefly recovered to $68,000 before retreating slightly to its current level of around $66,500, according to CoinGecko data.

The asset’s resurgence came shortly after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates unchanged. The benchmark remains set at 5.25%-5.50%, and the Fed says that “it will be appropriate to reduce the target range until greater confidence has been gained that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent.”

Another factor that may positively impact BTC valuation in the near future is the upcoming halving, expected in April. The event, which occurs approximately every four years, slows the rate at which new coins are mined and has been a precursor to a major bull run in the past.

Ripple Developments

The main news surrounding the company is related to the lawsuit against the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The parties reportedly submitted a joint letter requesting approval from the magistrates “to regulate sealing issues related to the upcoming resource-related briefing.”

Although the trial is scheduled for April 23, its outcome could be delayed as both entities could appeal any unfavorable ruling.

Ripple’s native token, XRP, has also made headlines in recent days. It received support from major cryptocurrency exchanges, such as BitMEX and Atlantis Exchange, which allowed trading services with it.

Solana Memes in the Spotlight

The cryptocurrency market has seen a sharp decline lately, but this was not the case for some Solana-based meme coins, which saw significant price increases.

The newly emerged Slerf (SLERF) and Book of Meme (BOME) are two obvious examples. The former recorded a daily increase of 70% on March 19, with its value approaching the $1.30 mark. However, it was also involved in some suspicious activity earlier this week when the developer behind it accidentally burned $10 million in funds raised from investors during the pre-sale. Currently, its price is around $0.80.

BOME made headlines on March 16 when its market capitalization skyrocketed to nearly $1.5 billion, briefly placing it among the top 100 cryptocurrencies. BOME made another attempt to enter the club on March 20th, when its price spiked by 30%, but was unable to reach the goal. At the moment, BOME is the 153rd largest digital asset.
