Protocol Used to Control Coronavirus is Discarded by the European Union

The developing team of the protocol did not receive any notification about the deletion of the information. The PPEP-PT spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

The Pan-European Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (PEPP-PT) Consortium is responsible for helping to develop protocols for a privacy-focused contact tracking system for the European Union. The group has removed everything related to the proposal for the Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (DP3T) protocol from its website.

Tracking contacts is the process that health authorities use to track the spread of viruses, identifying those who have been in contact with infected individuals and should, therefore, be in quarantine. In this sense, the countries are applying a variety of digital methods, which include cell phone location tracking, facial recognition, digital health passes that restrict movement, and Bluetooth proximity tracking.

Any contact tracker in the European Union will have to comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), which ensures that citizens of the European Union will have greater privacy and data protection than those currently applied in the USA.

The Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing (DP3T) team did not receive any notification about the removal of the protocol from the website. Besides, the PEPP-PT did not invite them to a call that it made on April 17th, where several partners in the consortium participated.

It is not clear what a PEPP-PT protocol might look like, since the consortium’s website only lists general guidelines, without offering concrete proposals. A D3PT spokesperson said that a centralized approach has more privacy risks, as well as the potential for re-appropriating the information for other purposes, such as that of state surveillance.

The developers of the DP3T protocol say that its design would foster greater confidence in applications built on the protocol, making them more likely to be downloaded and, therefore, more effective.

Kenneth Paterson, a professor in the Applied Cryptography Group at ETH Zurich’s Computer Science Department, who is also working on the proposed DP3T protocol, said that he is unsure of the type of PEPP-PT system that is under construction.

As the system does not allow outside experts to review it, they cannot see the specifications, according to Paterson. Also, he noted that the fact of not being able to look at the code, it is impossible to detect any type of errors.

This opens the doors to the privacy problem since it could give governments the ability to build a social graph for anyone who downloads the application, and they could discover who is close to whom. To be useful in monitoring Covid-19, at least 60% of the population should adopt it, according to a document published in the academic journal Science.

Once more, decentralization proves to ensure the privacy of those users who use blockchain-based applications. For that reason, many people are against the creation of cryptocurrencies or centralized tools, since their data would be at risk. To better understand this, it is only necessary to think of the idea of a national digital currency that would keep control of the people who use it.

Lightning Network to Receive Routing and Privacy Improvement

According to developers, the privacy and efficiency level in Lightning Network is not optimal. They propose including a process for routing and another for privacy.

A group of developers recently submitted a proposal to improve the routing and privacy efficiency of Lightning Network’s payment channels. Said document describes their aim to improve the ability of the network to correct errors in those two aspects.

The submission of the proposal occurred at the beginning of April. This idea stems from a study on privacy on the Lightning Network by developers René Pickhardt, Sergei Tikhomirov, Alex Biryukov, and Mariusz Nowostawski.

In their study, this group determined that an attacker could easily discover channel balances using probing. In other words, the privacy of the channels on the network is at risk. The text especially highlights that an attack like that lasts less than a minute per channel and requires a moderate commitment of capital with no expenditure.

Those findings led the team behind the study to conclude that the balance between the privacy and the efficiency of LN’s routing is “suboptimal”. In other words, the channels are “not well protected”.

To solve the problem of privacy, the group proposes a change in the handling of errors that hides the details from the wrong channel of the sending node. They consider that this modification would break with the probing technique that allowed them to discover the balances. However, it would put efficiency at risk, making routing failures more common.

According to the developers, a new API (Application Programming Interface) call would solve this second element, since it would allow the sender to check the balances of the channels of which it is not part. By doing so, they seek to improve the process of finding the route to process payments.

Recent LN Vulnerabilities and Proposals

Amid the continued development of the Lightning Network, there are several recently released vulnerabilities and improvement proposals. Among them, the most prominent is the launch of Loop Beta, a product that Lightning Labs developed to improve liquidity and facilitate the management of payment channels.

More recently, the same startup introduced LSAT, a new standard for authentication and payments for online services through the Lightning Network.

Among the vulnerabilities, one of the most relevant is the appearance of “zombie channels”, which used to be active but look as though they still were. However, they are not currently useful. These channels violate the bandwidth of the network and alter the routing performance by inflating the number of available channels.

In early March, a group of researchers from the University of Jerusalem published a study in which they determined that LN is vulnerable to overload attacks or congestion on payment channels.

Among the conclusions of the study, the experts also establish that this type of attack would not have a high cost for those who conduct it. Similarly, the Pickhardt team determined that probing threatens privacy in the Lightning Network.

A total of USD 1 Billion Reached by Bitcoin Investment Fund of Grayscale

In the first quarter of 2020 alone, the fund recorded an inflow of USD 503 million. BlackRock investors withdrew USD 31 billion from the company’s funds.

The interest from institutional investors in Bitcoin is on the rise with Grayscale, the largest mutual fund in this cryptocurrency, posting a record-high revenue flow in the first quarter of the year.

New York-based Grayscale allows its investors to buy Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies through its fund. In the past 12 months, the firm saw an investment of around USD 1 billion. There was an inflow of a little over half a billion US dollars (USD 503 million) in the first quarter of this year.

There is a massive interest in Grayscale’s Bitcoin fund, the largest and flagship fund of Grayscale. This takes place when BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, reveals that in the last quarter panic-stricken investors fled their long-term investment funds for the first time in five years.

Grayscale said that there was an investment of USD 389 million in its Bitcoin fund in the first quarter of 2020. This has been the best quarter in its history, with an increase of almost USD 200 million in the last three months of 2019.

Grayscale’s latest quarterly increase of more than USD 500 million is almost twice as much as its previous quarterly record high of USD 254 million. It reached that level in the third quarter of last year, with new investors representing USD 160 million of the money raised.

At the same time, Grayscale’s Ethereum fund also recorded quarterly inflows of USD 110 million.

Last January, Grayscale CEO Michael Sonnenshein stated that institutional money had already arrived in Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market.

Elsewhere, traditional asset managers have suffered losses throughout the historic first quarter of 2020. Institutional investors withdrew around USD 31 billion from BlackRock mutual funds and exchange funds during the first three months of the year. The 2020 bullish market turned 180 degrees towards complete financial collapse due to the coronavirus crisis.

Kyle Sanders, an analyst at Edward Jones, said that even BlackRock is not immune to a market crash in a note to his customers, following BlackRock’s latest statements.

There is a collapse in the markets and economies worldwide as the confinement to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) sweeps the S&P 500 Index, which lost a staggering 20% between January 1st and March 31st.

However, Bitcoin has performed better than most markets, since its price is more or less the same as in early January.

Before the market chaos that the coronavirus pandemic caused, many Bitcoin heavyweights and the community of cryptocurrencies, in general, were optimistic about the prospects for Bitcoin this year, since the upcoming Bitcoin halving is a potential positive catalyst.

The Bitcoin halving occurs to reduce the reward for miners by half, so it will go from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC per block around May 13th.

There have already been two Bitcoin halvings since the cryptocurrency was born in 2009, one in 2012 and the other in 2016. Bitcoin halvings are scheduled to occur approximately once every four years until the network has generated a complete supply of 21 million BTC, which might happen well into the next century.

Fight against Covid-19 in Spain with Blockchain-Based Passport

The solution offers an alternative for moving from mass to selective confinement in the country. People can share the results of their analyses, which will be available through a cell phone application, via QR code.

The countries that have suffered the most due to the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) are organizing themselves to resume some essential activities.  The outbreak of the virus has not yet stopped, but because the economy of the country and the survival of the population demand it. For this reason, a proposal that is gaining strength in Spain is the implementation of a blockchain-based passport that allows accrediting the state of health of citizens. The objective is to move from mass to selective confinement to reactivate the economy.

In recent days, Catalan company Blocktac, which provides a solution to combat counterfeiting of diplomas, products, and medicines, joined the battle against the coronavirus. They assure that their proposal, which consists of a blockchain-based “immunity passport”, will help to solve the needs that the pandemic has posed. They intend to revive the economy, which has experienced the devastating consequences that the virus has left in its wake.

Last April 15th, Blocktac announced on its official website a joint work with the Catalan Association of Health Entities (ACES), the private health association in which there 238 affiliate companies.

The joint work will allow Implementing the solution based on a blockchain consisting of the registration of the results of the analyses to detect the virus, which the laboratories of the centers associated with ACES have conducted. The patients analyzed will receive these digital certificates, which will work with their identification number instead of with their names to ensure privacy. These documents will also be available through the I-Covid-19 cell phone application and people can share them by using a QR code.

The application contains digital certificates that correspond to the reports on the serological studies conducted by accredited laboratories, which determine immunity status and do rapid viral antigen detection and PCR tests.

According to the results of the tests, the immunity certificates indicate the overcoming of the infection (with a green code), the state of acute infection (with a red one) and the absence of infection (with a yellow one). They also include the decisions and recommendations for each situation: normal activity (green), confinement (red), or follow-up and monitoring of symptoms (yellow), according to the publication.

PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), a multinational professional consulting, auditing and legal advisory services company with headquarters in Spain, also announced the implementation of a blockchain-recorded health passport to facilitate employees’ return to work during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The identification of the immunized people in a blockchain solution may favor the economy of Spain and other sectors that work to determine the strategies that most effectively stop the pandemic. However, it is not yet clear how long immunity to the virus lasts.

There have been signs of attachment to blockchain-bases technology in Catalonia for several years within the business sector. Even the Generalitat has launched a project that provides solutions based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) in various areas such as digital identity, waste traceability, and consent record.

Libra Issues Basket of Stablecoins after Changing Course

The Libra Association modified its white paper to conform to international regulations. The project would depart from its cryptocurrency ideal of approaching existing payment systems.

Last Aril 16th, the Libra Association, led by Facebook, announced a second version of the white paper on its Libra project. The document mentions several changes to the project, which include issuing a basket of individual stablecoins tied to national fiat currencies.

For example, there will be an issuance of a LibraUSD for the US dollar, a LibraEUR for the euro, a LibraGBP for the British pound and a LibraSGD for the Singapore dollar, according to the document. Along with all these stablecoins, Libra (LBR) itself will also work, with a basket consisting of these stablecoins instead of fiat money as they reported last year.

They will tailor changes to the requirements that international regulators requested. The association itself admits that its objective is not to replace national fiat currencies. They say that they hope to work with central banks and financial institutions worldwide.

The design of the Libra network is that of a low-cost globally accessible payment system, a complement rather than a replacement for national fiat currencies. The stabilization of currencies and the preservation of value are key efforts within the exclusive purview of the public sector. Therefore, the Libra network is undergoing an increase by including stablecoins in a single currency, such as USD, EUR, and GBP, among others, according to the association.

There is evidence of the approach towards regulatory authorities, instead of towards users, in the fact that the association itself states that it seeks to provide a clear path to safely integrate central bank digital currencies (CBDC) as they become available. In other words, one of its objectives would be to facilitate the operations of potential national digital currencies using its centralized blockchain.

The support for Libra as a multi-currency unit and individual stablecoins will build on cash or cash equivalents, government bonds, and the funds in the currency itself that users deposit.

With these decisions by Facebook, the project that it revealed in June of last year, would show a departure from its ideal of creating a real cryptocurrency to approach payment systems that already exist in the market and are regulated by financial institutions themselves.

Reactions on Social Networks

Cryptocurrency users and enthusiasts shared on the social networks their opinions about an announcement by the Libra Association. Udi Wertheimer stated that Libra will now be “a clone of Venmo,” a well-known PayPal subsidiary payment system.

People on several fronts have questioned the Libra project in the past. Banks, financial regulators, and even cryptocurrency enthusiasts themselves have debated against it. The latter do not consider it a cryptocurrency, a vision that renowned professor and bitcoiner Andreas Antonopoulos shares.

The association is composed of 22 companies that would be responsible for one of the nodes that would form the network. Among these are Xapo, Uber, Shopify, Coinbase, and Lyft. Other large corporations such as Visa, MasterCard or eBay joined the association but then decided to withdraw to pursue other priority projects.

Italian Red Cross Uses Bitcoins to Fight against Covid-19

The construction of a medical area costs at least about USD 22,000 in bitcoins.

A recent press release informed that the Italian Red Cross used bitcoins to build a medical area. This was possible since a crypto fundraiser donated this money in BTC. In the medical area, the Red Cross will work to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

According to the information on the construction of the medical area, local media revealed that the international organization will have the most sophisticated machines for the detection, control, and treatment of the virus. Besides, it is known that the Red Cross manages a collection fund that allows receiving donations in cryptocurrencies.

Official data from the Red Cross reveals that, in one month, the institution managed to raise more than USD 32,000 in cryptocurrencies, only in donations from minority taxpayers.

Thus, the authorities of the institution in Italy commented that the construction of this advanced medical post required USD 22,000. This initiative could allow combating the virus in one of the countries in Europe most affected by the pandemic. The building is near Rome, in a town called Castel Gandolfo.

In the construction of the medical post, it is known that the international organization will use the money to acquire a pneumatic store. The Red Cross built this space to house an examination station for blood donations.

It is important to comment that the inauguration of the medical area took place during the “National Day of Blood Donation”. In that space, the medical staff will work for this type of medical need. The Red Cross equipped this new area with other instruments necessary to conduct the medical work during the pandemic.

Bruno Pietrosanti, President of the Italian Red Cross, commented on how excited he was due to this initiative. “With great pleasure, we reached the first main milestone of our fundraising. We are happy to have turned the received donations into tangible aid. We are excited to have received so much help from the Bitcoin community”, he concluded.

The Medical Area Will Be the Place for Blood Donation Events

A web news page interviewed Davide Menegaldo, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Helperbit, which is the company behind the bitcoin fundraising initiative for the Italian Red Cross.

During the interview, Menegaldo commented that the construction of the medical post will serve to conduct blood donation events. He announced that the next event will be on April 19th.

Menegaldo hopes that, during the next four months, donation events can take place twice a week. Besides, he added that “the Red Cross team plans to deploy more equipment bought with bitcoin donations before the next donation event”.

Currently, the Italian Red Cross crypto-donation team managed to raise at least 4 bitcoins, much more than the amount they expected to receive in less than a month. After the construction of the aforementioned medical area, there is almost USD 12,000 in bitcoins. The organization will use this money in initiatives that help combat the pandemic.

Representatives of the organization said they started the project with a fundraising goal of about USD 10,700. Nevertheless, they managed to raise this amount in only 3 days. So the organization managed to triple the estimated donations.

To conclude, the statement provided data on the donation, revealing that 97 % of the donation is in bitcoins (BTC) and only 3% is in Altcoins. Almost 90% of donors gave their money anonymously to help the Italian Red Cross fight against Covid-19.
