The solution offers an alternative for moving from mass to selective confinement in the country. People can share the results of their analyses, which will be available through a cell phone application, via QR code.

The countries that have suffered the most due to the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) are organizing themselves to resume some essential activities.  The outbreak of the virus has not yet stopped, but because the economy of the country and the survival of the population demand it. For this reason, a proposal that is gaining strength in Spain is the implementation of a blockchain-based passport that allows accrediting the state of health of citizens. The objective is to move from mass to selective confinement to reactivate the economy.

In recent days, Catalan company Blocktac, which provides a solution to combat counterfeiting of diplomas, products, and medicines, joined the battle against the coronavirus. They assure that their proposal, which consists of a blockchain-based “immunity passport”, will help to solve the needs that the pandemic has posed. They intend to revive the economy, which has experienced the devastating consequences that the virus has left in its wake.

Last April 15th, Blocktac announced on its official website a joint work with the Catalan Association of Health Entities (ACES), the private health association in which there 238 affiliate companies.

The joint work will allow Implementing the solution based on a blockchain consisting of the registration of the results of the analyses to detect the virus, which the laboratories of the centers associated with ACES have conducted. The patients analyzed will receive these digital certificates, which will work with their identification number instead of with their names to ensure privacy. These documents will also be available through the I-Covid-19 cell phone application and people can share them by using a QR code.

The application contains digital certificates that correspond to the reports on the serological studies conducted by accredited laboratories, which determine immunity status and do rapid viral antigen detection and PCR tests.

According to the results of the tests, the immunity certificates indicate the overcoming of the infection (with a green code), the state of acute infection (with a red one) and the absence of infection (with a yellow one). They also include the decisions and recommendations for each situation: normal activity (green), confinement (red), or follow-up and monitoring of symptoms (yellow), according to the publication.

PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), a multinational professional consulting, auditing and legal advisory services company with headquarters in Spain, also announced the implementation of a blockchain-recorded health passport to facilitate employees’ return to work during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The identification of the immunized people in a blockchain solution may favor the economy of Spain and other sectors that work to determine the strategies that most effectively stop the pandemic. However, it is not yet clear how long immunity to the virus lasts.

There have been signs of attachment to blockchain-bases technology in Catalonia for several years within the business sector. Even the Generalitat has launched a project that provides solutions based on distributed ledger technology (DLT) in various areas such as digital identity, waste traceability, and consent record.
