Chivo Wallet users have been reporting identity theft notices since its release. Those who steal someone’s identity on Chivo can withdraw at least $ 30 in bitcoin as a gift.

There are already 755 cases regarding identity theft denounced on the bitcoin platform Chivo Wallet. This application, which applies only to people from El Salvador, has been showing various bugs and security struggles since the government released it in October 2021.

One of the affected persons who filed the complaint was the Salvadoran citizen Rina Monti. She discovered that someone had used her identity document to register on the platform. She realized this situation when a friend of hers looked up her identity number (DUI) in Chivo Wallet and discovered that it got already registered, something that she had never done.

Rina approached Cristosal to receive assistance because Cristosal is an organization focused on defending human rights. Her IUD got linked to the app with an unknown password, and now she cannot enter her bitcoin exchange account. This method prevents affected users from seeing if the thief made movements under the stolen identity without external knowledge.

Rina declared that what worries her most are the transactions that have been made in her name by people who do not know, and they are reasons totally beyond her control. Therefore, he urgently asks the government, the platform’s managing agent, to investigate what happened and find out who is responsible for his identity theft.

Cristosal found that there are many cases similar to those of Rina Monti. The agency has already spotted more than 700 identity thefts in Chivo Wallet to date; there are cases that it will process before they reach the authorities in El Salvador.

Theft in Chivo steals $ 30 worth of Bitcoin

The government of El Salvador chose to give away 30 United States dollars (USD) to all the citizens who register in Chivo Wallet. This initiative arrives to rapidly boost the use of this new platform, which allows bitcoin to get exchanged since it became a legal tender in the nation.

This gift voucher led many people to download the application in the first few days after the application got released. Some analysts believe that a massive number of them only signed up for it and will not use their service after extracting $ 30 in the cryptocurrency.

Stealing this $ 30 may be the main reason so many people found a registered username without permission. The few security filters that Chivo Wallet requests to register have opened a gate for a large amount of identity theft to take place in the platform.

Salvadorans started to denounce through social networks that third parties used their data to gain access to the wallet and extract funds. But now, the National Civil Police of El Salvador has already confirmed that such fraud is taking place.
