An Economist Explains Why Institutions Are Interested in Bitcoin

Saifedean Ammous considers that Bitcoin has the strongest currency in world history. The economist believes that a company can invest its surplus in the pioneering cryptocurrency.

Institutional Bitcoin (BTC) adoption has reached unexpected levels since 2020, as companies and countries like El Salvador have accumulated the crypto asset. Economist Saifedean Ammous, the author of The Bitcoin Standard, recently explained why the interest in the pioneering cryptocurrency grew so much.

Ammous stated that at least two main attractions lead companies to include BTC in their accounting books. He believes that it has been the fastest and strongest currency in world history.

The economist considers that the limited supply of Bitcoin and the difficulty of creating more coins make Bitcoin superior to any other currency. In that regard, he said that the cryptocurrency is resistant to inflation without depending on a trusted third party.

The Limited Supply of Bitcoin Makes It a Deflationary Currency

According to Ammous, the rate of increase in the supply of Bitcoin is slower than with any other known currencies.  He pointed out that this feature makes it the least inflationary money worldwide.

He commented that anything could serve as money, but people will only issue more if it is easy to create. He warned that something too simple to make would no longer be a currency as it would lose its value.

The educator also considers the speed of Bitcoin as a cross-border settlement asset crucial for institutions to use it. He argued that options to move large amounts of money across borders always include trusted third parties such as banks and governments. He highlighted that this process takes longer than the roughly 10 minutes per confirmation that the Bitcoin network requires.

Additionally, he said that a block adds to the Bitcoin accounting ledger every 10 minutes, making it a secure tool. A security layer protects it against fraudulent transactions and prevents the reversal of transactions.

The Amount of Money that Companies Can Allocate to Bitcoin

The writer gave his opinion about how much money a company can bet on the pioneering cryptocurrency. He stated that its income should grow faster than the rate of money printing not to lose capital and wealth as an institution. For that reason, it makes sense for it to have the strongest currency in history on its balance sheets.

Ammous finds it reasonable to guarantee the expenses for a range between 24 and 36 months. He believes that it can invest its entire surplus in the crypto asset.

The economist explained that the constant increase in the value of BTC guarantees protection against inflation. That has driven many leading companies to invest in it to keep it in their coffers.

In that regard, he noted that Bitcoin has never generated losses in a range of four years. Therefore, he thinks it is safe for companies to invest in it to prevent losing capital with fiat money. For example, Jesse Powell recently said that the US dollar is undergoing devaluation.

The bitcoins will get deposited in Chilean pesos in the account of the Castro Municipality. More than 200 victims got affected by the forest fire in Chiloé, in southern Chile.

Bitcoin (BTC) is also a symbol of solidarity and help. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Bitcoin Chile revealed this week that it already started a campaign of donations in BTC to help the victims of the fire catastrophe in the city of Castro, in the south of the country.

The representatives highlighted that donations can also get executed through BTC’s Lightning Network (LN), which guarantees speed when sending money.

Five days ago, a forest fire was registered in the town of Chiloé, in the Municipality of Castro, in Chile, which left almost 400 victims, 340 evacuees, and at least 150 families affected. The area got declared in a state of communal disaster.

Bitcoin Chile stated that all contributions gathered will be donated in full in Chilean pesos to the bank account brought by the Castro Municipality to help the victims left behind by the disaster.

To donate, you must access the page set up by Bitcoin Chile, which accepts help from the payment processor BTCPay Server. The minimum amount per contribution is 2,000 Chilean pesos, or USD 2.50.

By clicking on the Donate button, the page opens a payment order with the figure marked in BTC to send. Before, ask to give an email to receive the proper information. The QR code will be displayed, which must get scanned to proceed with the shipment.

The Fire, a Disaster

As commented, the weekend lived hell in Chile. A 1.5-hectare got destroyed by fire and affected the town of Chiloé, leaving hundreds of victims in its wake.

The mayor of Castro, Juan Eduardo Vera, said many homes got affected by the flames. The tragedy took effect due to the rapid advance of the fire. Firefighters from three communes took part in the operation.

On December 13, the Carabineros Criminalistics Laboratory confirmed the discovery of various remains, in addition to the consumption of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes in the house where the fire would have started, according to local press reports.

The mayor said the work of the Fire Department has been tremendous, and solidarity comes as a priority and can get appreciated in how each family, each neighbor, has helped to contribute with others to help them get what they can from their homes.

Bitcoin as a Tool to Donate and Support

BTC has been used for solidarity purposes before. This same year, there were signs of inclusion and support framed in the first cryptocurrency. Kraken donated at least $ 150,000 in BTC to an African-American group of investors and enthusiasts.

A year ago, the international community rallied in favor of a young Colombian, who was donated 1 BTC in less than 24 hours, after enthusiasts helped him believe even more in Satoshi’s project.

According to the Bank of England, Bitcoin Price Could Drop to Zero

The Bank of England believes that the growth of cryptocurrencies threatens the financial system. Cunliffe said they should be ready for when Bitcoin becomes a bigger problem.

The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of England, Sir Jon Cunliffe, revealed new warnings to investors of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. This Tuesday, December 14, the official declared that these assets could lose their value. The statement took effect during a BBC program.

Cunliffe said bitcoin price could vary considerably and, theoretically or practically, could drop to zero. He made these statements coinciding with the Stability Report published by the Bank of England on Monday, December 13.

In addition, the representative noted that the rapid growth of cryptocurrencies could put the British financial system at risk, as a drastic fall would generate a domino effect.

Cunliffe said the point where users worry is when they integrate into the financial system. A price correction could affect other markets and affect established players in the financial market. He added that the risk is not here yet, but it takes time to design standards and regulations.

In his opinion, the Bank of England must be prepared, with a regulatory framework that allows containing risks, for the moment when bitcoin becomes a much bigger problem. Cunliffe thinks that risk is close, so he urged regulators and legislators to consider this subject.

Along the same lines, the Bank of England pointed out in the Stability Report for December 2021 that 95% of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, are not backed by underlying assets and have no intrinsic value. This reason led these assets to be vulnerable to more expanded price corrections and, therefore, investors can lose their entire investment.

According to the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, at least 2.3 million people in the UK hold cryptocurrencies, with an average investment per person of around ÂŁ 300 (about $ 400).

Declaring the Death of Bitcoin is a Usual Narrative

It is not the first time a senior Bank of England official has said that Bitcoin has no future. In January this year, the governor of the British issuing body, Andrew Bailey, said in an online forum that no cryptocurrency design could last over time.

Bailey clarified that the volatility of the price of Bitcoin would prevent it from maintaining itself over time since payments require a stable currency.

However, the Bank of England discussed the loss of bitcoin with analysts since 2010. By 2018, the first cryptocurrency got declared “dead” more than 300 times. According to 99Bitcoin, a project that aims at tracking public statements that bitcoin “will drop to zero,” this bitcoin figure could stand at least 436 times.

According to Jesse Powell, the US Dollar Will Slump against Bitcoin

Powell believes that the US dollar will lose value, so he recommends buying products and services with financing. He also advises investing in Bitcoin rather than the American fiat currency as the letter loses value.

The CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, Jesse Powell, recently talked about the present and future of the US dollar and Bitcoin.

The businessman thinks that it is hard to predict where the price of Bitcoin will head. He admitted that he is paying more attention to the US dollar now that people wonder where its bottom is. He explained that inflation seems out of control, and there are no signs that it will end.

In August, the founder of Kraken forecast that the price of Bitcoin would reach USD 100,000 at the end of 2021. In that sense, he said he should stop making predictions due to his mistake, as the cryptocurrency is trading at USD 47,700. However, Powell does not recommend keeping savings in US dollars and advises investing in Bitcoin for the long term.

He advised stocking up on gas and milk, besides prepaying medical bills and student fees, as ways to offset inflation. Similarly, he recommended buying products and services with financing since he believes interest rates will turn negative. However, he warned that people must do that practice with caution. Everyone should pay the debts they take on according to their economic level.

The United States is undergoing the highest inflation in the last 39 years, said Powell and other different public figures. Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and businessman Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, are only two examples. They both disagree with the economic policies of Joe Biden and encourage their followers to invest in Bitcoin to get rid of US dollars.

Investors Should Think of the Long-Term Bullish Trend of Bitcoin

Powell said he had thought ten years ago that everybody would travel on flying saucers and pay for coffee with Bitcoin. With that example, he means it is hard to know where it will go. However, the long-term trend line of Bitcoin suggests that its level of adoption is growing.

Regarding his predictions, it is now possible in countries like Argentina to buy coffee with Bitcoin. The same happens with McDonald’s in El Salvador, where the cryptocurrency became legal tender. Therefore, although it is not yet a global situation, his dreams were not too far from reality.

Jesse Powell advised thinking of Bitcoin as an investment of more than five years, as it constantly goes up and down. However, although there are still no flying saucers, the growing interest in Bitcoin from less experienced investors is considerable.

In addition, the CEO of Kraken said that many speculators believe that Bitcoin will soon drop below USD 40,000. As an investor in the pioneering cryptocurrency, he explained that this fall could mean a buying opportunity, as it tends to appreciate in the long term.

In Ukraine, Former Commercial Bank is About to Test Digital Currency on Stellar’s Blockchain

The pilot program takes effect with the supervision of the central bank of Ukraine and will test the use of a digital hryvnia for payroll payments.

One of Ukraine’s oldest commercial banks, TASCOMBANK, is beginning a testing program for a digital version of hryvnia, that nation’s legal tender, that will leverage the Stellar blockchain.

The Stellar Foundation, a non-profit organization that backs up the development and growth of Stellar, announced the news on Tuesday in a press release that got shared through its social networks.

According to the information, Tascombank would release the pilot program in parallel with the fintech company BittGlobal. Tascombank intends to test various payment use cases of digital currency. The electronic hryvnia would get tested on the Stellar Blockchain and applied through the BittGlobal platform’s digital currency management system.

Ukraine to Test Digital Currency for Payroll

The pilot program will take effect with the National Bank of Ukraine’s supervision and with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation. Speaking about the initiative, the Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Oleksandr Bornyakov, said this pilot project will serve as the technological ground for the issuance of electronic money and is the next step in advancing the innovation of financial and payments infrastructure in Ukraine.

The Stellar Foundation highlighted that the goal is to set various tests on the issuance of electronic money on an open blockchain. As such, the pilot program will seek to test the effectiveness of the digital currency on public employee payroll, peer-to-peer payments, and merchant payments.

According to the report, the pilot will test the use case for payroll payments with the employees of Diia, a public information technology (IT) solutions company in Ukraine.

The digital currency will get built according to existing e-money legislation in Ukraine, and the pilot might start in 2022. While the companies did not highlight an exact timeframe for the project, Valeriy Danilenko, Tascombank vice president responsible for e-commerce, pointed out to CoinDesk that the goal is to carry out a pilot test in the shortest reasonable time.

Europe and the Development of CBDC

The government of Ukraine, a country with one of the highest rates of crypto adoption according to a 2020 ranking by Chainalysis, is curr to innovate its payments system.

The nation’s parliament approved a law to regulate payment methods in July. The language of that regulation puts central bank digital currency (or CBDC) in the same category as cash or electronic money. Around the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that would allow Ukraine’s central bank to issue a CBDC, according to a CoinDesk report.

Also, before this legislation, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine had already announced a partnership with the Stellar Foundation for a national digital currency creation, Decrypt reported.

Ukraine’s most recent efforts place the nation far ahead of many European countries in plans to issue a CBDC. In October, the European Central Bank launched a two-year experiment in a digital euro; although the entity has highlighted that the European Union will not see a CBDC until -at least- 2025. Meanwhile, about 80 central banks worldwide are actively exploring digital currencies.
