The BIS Estimates the Rising Interest in Bitcoin Could Leave Banks Behind

Banks fall behind as crypto exchanges take the largest share of the market. The BIS considers that traditional financial institutions offer a better Bitcoin trading service.

The ecosystem of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies arouses growing interest from retail and institutional investors. For that reason, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) estimates that banks may be falling behind.

Analysts from the Monetary Economics department of the BIS recently published a report titled Banking in the Shadow of Bitcoin? They discuss the impact of the exponential expansion of the Bitcoin-linked industry in the financial sector, particularly in banks.

The study indicates that cryptocurrency-related services offered by the world’s leading banks remain at very modest levels.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) is a global organization that brings together banking supervisory authorities. In late 2020, they found that Bitcoin-linked services offered by banks reached just USD 188 million.

The BCBS had collected such data on bank exposure to Bitcoin since 2018, before which they had very little information. Only 7 of the 178 banks that participated in that compilation reported their offer of services with cryptocurrencies.

The data from the BCBS includes a world map showing the geographic location of banks that offer Bitcoin services. Most of those financial institutions are in North America, Central Europe, and South Korea.

The other banks included in the study claimed that they did not offer cryptocurrency services. They are in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico), southern Africa, much of Europe, and southeast Asia.

Current regulations in those latter countries prevent most banking institutions from adding services with Bitcoin. The Central Bank of Argentina recently forced the banks Brubank and Galicia to suspend their new cryptocurrency products.

Banks Need Bitcoin to Innovate

The researchers from the BIS acknowledge in their report that banks need to take on more exposure to Bitcoin. That would allow them to have a greater capacity for innovation and increase financial inclusion.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) and the cryptocurrency market attract even more users. That has led many large and old banks to include crypto assets on their platforms to keep their customers.

In 2021, Deutsche Bank, the largest bank in Germany, announced that it would provide a cryptocurrency trading and custody service. The oldest financial institution in the United States, New York Mellon, made the same offer earlier that year.

The Swiss subsidiary of the Spanish bank BBVA joins the list, as it has offered a 100% digital investment account since late December. They target clients who want to invest in Bitcoin and Ether (ETH) in more than 30 nations.

The report by BIS notes that the few banks with exposure to Bitcoin have capital of more than EUR 3 billion.

Despite the above advances, the analysts from the BIS highlighted that the main activities with cryptocurrencies concentrate on exchanges. Those companies serve most retail and institutional clients interested in Bitcoin, operating with very light regulation.

If All Countries Adopt Bitcoin as Legal Tender, its Price Will Rise to USD 1 Million

Bitcoin would be the ultimate store of value if it became a global legal tender. Argentine specialist Agustín Kassis believes that the price will rise as its adoption grows.

Herminio Fernández, founder and CEO of the Spanish payment app EurocoinPay, recently spoke about Bitcoin. He said its adoption as legal tender would make it the best store of value and money known.

The businessman pointed out there are at least USD 21 billion issued worldwide. He thinks Bitcoin would absorb all that fiat money if it became legal tender in all countries. Considering that the issuance of BTC has a limit of 21 million units, he estimates that 1 BTC would be worth USD 1 million.

Fernández believes that the price of Bitcoin would grow more if the cryptocurrency replaced the rest of the money. According to data from Statista, the US dollar occupies about 59% of world foreign exchange reserves. In other words, BTC should cover more than the remaining 40% with its global adoption as a currency.

The Spanish executive stressed that the value of Bitcoin would rise even more, counting the part that would capitalize on the gold market as a store of value. He considers it a safe and easy to transport cryptocurrency and an excellent unit of account and means of payment. That further expands its demand and can increase its adoption internationally, impacting the price.

The Increased Use of Bitcoin Drives Its Price Higher

The volatility in the price of Bitcoin has led different regulators to express their disagreement with making it a legal tender. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and some central banks have said that several times.

However, some believe that the increased use of Bitcoin will decrease its volatility regardless of whether it is legal tender or not. That would cause its price to rise and balance out, a theory defended by Argentine cryptocurrency financial advisor Agustín Kassis.

Although Bitcoin is volatile in the short term, the specialist believes that this will not be the case within two or three years. He pointed out that no one buying and storing BTC for three years has lost value, so he considers it a long-term investment.

For that reason, Kassis argues that it is irrelevant that Bitcoin is legal tender. He said it is illegal to buy or save US dollars in Argentina. However, that does not prevent citizens from looking for ways to protect their money against constant inflation and the devaluation of the Argentine peso.

Accelerating Bitcoin Adoption May Boost Its Price

Economist Natalia Motyl said, from a liberal philosophical viewpoint, that she cannot force anyone to use a currency or cryptocurrency. She highlighted that the accelerated spontaneous adoption of Bitcoin would favor the stabilization of its price.

She commented that the use of Bitcoin globally and its adoption as legal tender in two countries mark the bullish dynamic in the coming months. Regardless of market volatility, the price of BTC could again exceed USD 40,000 before long.

The expert understands that Bitcoin will eventually reach a balance point far from its current volatility. She argues that price volatility would decrease if more people used it, so she believes countries should adopt it.

An Economist Predicts Bitcoin Will Drop to USD 3,000 before Rising to USD 500 Thousand

Harry Dent believes that Bitcoin will not escape a prolonged global bearish market that is just beginning. The pioneering cryptocurrency could become the financial standard to replace gold in a digital economy.

The sideways movements in the price of Bitcoin (BTC) over the last few days could indicate that a significant recovery is coming. However, many believe that the value of the cryptocurrency created by Satoshi Nakamoto will continue to decline.

Since early this year, economist Harry Dent has been predicting that the price of Bitcoin will continue to fall. The analyst, who adopts a short-term bearish stance, foresaw a significant drop in the markets in 2022.

Dent confirmed his position on the immediate future of the markets, including cryptocurrencies. He stated that the recent margin of recovery would not be sustainable over time. He said it was not a correction but the beginning of a prolonged bearish market.

The founder of HS Dent Publishing set July as the turning point for his predictions. He expects prices to reach lower points than those seen until now.

The analyst believes that this prolonged bearish market, which would affect stocks, gold, and Bitcoin, would end around 2024. He considers that the economies are weak and that there is a bubble from which the cryptocurrency will not escape.

For that reason, he thinks that the price of Bitcoin will drop to between USD 3,000 and USD 7,000 within two years. Those levels indicate that the cryptocurrency has fallen to figures from the previous market cycle, which has not happened yet. In perspective, that prediction seems to be very risky.

Dent Would Not Buy Bitcoin Although It Was the Chance of a Lifetime

Dent predicted that there will be a new global financial boom in which Bitcoin and assets like gold will come out winners after 2024.

He thinks that Bitcoin could become the financial standard to replace physical assets like gold. Due to the current digital economy, Bitcoin represents the digitization of all financial assets.

Dent believes that Bitcoin could be worth USD 500,000 to USD 1 million if it were to replace gold. He predicts that the height of the great global bullish run will occur in 2037 at the latest.

That might seem like an arbitrary prediction, but Dent explained that a price between USD 500,000 and USD 1,000,000 would be enough to dethrone gold.

The investor stated that he would not buy Bitcoin, although it was a lifetime investment. He said he would not touch it even if its price fell to 50% or 60% from current levels without providing many details.

Although Dent sees Bitcoin and the other markets in a significant bubble, multiple indicators point to an imminent upward trend. However, it is still necessary to wait for what the market says, given the different forecasts about the future of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 30,291 and has accumulated a 4.6% gain over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 29.56 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 576.99 billion, according to CoinGecko.

The Luna Foundation Guard Sells Over 80,000 BTC in a Vain Effort to Save UST

Do Kwon, the founder of Terra, promised to use the Bitcoin of the LFG if the value of UST dropped to defend its parity. The crash of the Terra ecosystem caused UST to fall below 30 US cents while LUNA lost 99.8% of its value.

Many investors want to know what happened to the USD 3 billion worth of Bitcoin acquired by the Luna Foundation Guard (LFG). The organization aimed to back the stablecoin UST with those funds if a crash like the recent one occurred.

The LFG is an organization that monitors the Bitcoin reserves of the Terra ecosystem. They recently said that it spent 99% of its BTC holdings in an effort to save the stablecoin UST.

Last week, the LFG accumulated over 80,000 BTC, equivalent to nearly USD 3 billion, alongside other tokens like BNB, Tether, USDC, and AVAX. Do Kwon, the founder of Terra, had also promised to use the Bitcoin of the organization if the value of UST dropped.

On Twitter, the LFG said it transferred 52,189 BTC to trade with a counterparty as UST dropped below its face value. They added that they sold another 33,206 BTC trying to defend the parity of UST.

Early this week, the LFG only had 313 BTC, worth around USD 9.3 million, in its reserve. They also stated they would use the rest of their USD 85 million in crypto assets to compensate the remaining UST users.

In that regard, they highlighted on Twitter that they would start by compensating smallholders. They pointed out that they discussed various distribution methods and will post updates soon.

UST Is the Algorithmic Stablecoin of Terra

The UST token is an algorithmic stablecoin different from USDT and USDC, which hold fiat assets to back their tokens. UST relied on a complex set of codes and its linked token (LUNA) to maintain the UST supply and demand balance.

The price of LUNA collapsed when UST began to drop below USD 1. Consequently, UST fell below 30 US cents while LUNA lost 99.8% of its value.

UST is trading at around USD 0.075492 and has accumulated a 90.3% loss over the last seven days. While its trading market is above USD 218.23 million, its market capitalization is about USD 849.93 million, according to CoinGecko.

Do Kwon recently brought forward a revival plan proposing the possibility of forking the network and restoring ownership to 1 billion tokens. LUNA token has a circulating supply of over 6.5 billion, compared to 340 million before the sharp drop.

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao criticized the proposal of Kwon, arguing that the fork gives no value to the Terra ecosystem. In addition, he described it as wishful thinking, saying it is impossible to reverse all transactions.

Terra struggled to save UST, but they could not avert the collapse of the stablecoin. Furthermore, the remarks of LFG further lowered investor expectations. Although the LFG stated that it would reward the victims of the fall of UST, it has not reported the methodology.

Terraform Labs Legal Team Abandoned the Company after the Crash of the UST and LUNA Tokens

Amid the Terra ecosystem’s problems, the legal team that brought legal support to the project left their positions. The lawful process gets led by an external lawyer backing up Terraform Labs during all the struggles derived from the crash of its two digital currencies.

What happened with Terra and its space’s digital assets has harmed investors who have lost their investment for the simple fact of owning UST and LUNA funds. This situation also seriously damaged Terraform Labs, as recent events have also caused essential team members to abandon the entity during its current struggles.

The internal legal team of Terraform Labs, a group responsible for giving legal advice and approach to the Terra work team, resigned from its position shortly after the algorithmic stable coin of the ecosystem crashed down and approached the lowest values.

The legal team Abandoned Terraform Labs

This information came from an internal source linked with what happened; highlighting that the legal team members had abandoned their positions, which is why the legal conflicts are now at an external lawyer’s hands.

The information highlighted by the source got confirmed by reviewing the LinkedIn profiles of the former members of the legal wing of Terraform Labs. Therefore, Marc Godich, Lawernce Florio, and Noah Axler have already made the respective changes in their accounts on the social network and reported who stopped working for the Terra ecosystem this month.

Let’s keep in mind that Terraform Labs is the entity created by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin in 2018, responsible for encouraging the development of the Terra Blockchain space.

The Chaos Reign in Terra

The Terra ecosystem recently became the subject of discussions within the crypto environment after the fall of its two main digital assets, the native token LUNA and the stable coin UST, the latter being more impactful for carrying out its activities under an algorithmic archetype. The currencies completely lose parity with the US dollar to crash down to lows near USD 0.11 per unit.

Even though the top team of Terra worked hard to reverse the incident and chose to sell a good part of the bitcoins that they had in their reserve, unfortunately, LUNA and UST did not react favorably amid the collective fear that invaded the market. It is important to highlight that this crash also impacted most of the leading exponents of the crypto ecosystem, which registered losses of more than 50% concerning their historical maximums.

Currently, the founder of Terra, Do Kwon, proposed to the community the possibility of making a Hard Fork and forking the network, which would create a new version that dispenses with UST and distributes the governance of the protocol among all users of the network. This alternative also states that the original version of the Blockchain will remain active but will now become Terra Classic.

Mike Novogratz Speaks after the Situation with Terra and Highlights that Galaxy Capital also Recorded Significant Losses

Novogratz highlighted that Galaxy Digital also felt the weight of what happened with the Terra ecosystem, especially since they got listed as investors in the project at the end of 2020.

The famous CEO of Galaxy Digital, Mike Novogratz, spoke about the situation of Terra space and highlighted that as well as many affected, both he and his entity got hit by the fall of UST and LUNA prices.

Novogratz Shares his Thoughts about the Fall of Terra

Novogratz’s statements happened in a letter specially sent to the shareholders of Galaxy Digital. He contextualized the situation under which the entity invested in Terra and the disastrous events.

Novogratz expressed no good news about what happened in the markets or the Terra ecosystem. In LUNA and UST alone, $40 billion of market value got destroyed quickly. Both large and small investors watched how all the profits and investments vanished in front of their eyes. The collapse dented confidence in digital assets and Defi. Every time money gets lost in fashion; people seek the truth about what happened there.

Galaxy Digital invested capital in Terra and its tokens during the last quarter of 2020. Novogratz highlighted that the entity had shown interest in financing the project due to the terms of the payments.

A Difficult Macroeconomic Panorama

Another aspect that Novogratz referred to is that the situation of Terra took effect amid a macroeconomic context that was quite harmful to the financial world, so LUNA and UST got significantly impacted by conditions even outside the digital asset sector.

Novogratz also spoke about the decline in the prices of traditional assets since the beginning of 2022, added to the inflationary scenario that is harming many economies worldwide, and the measures the central banks accepted to manage these situations.

The Way to Follow

Novogratz also highlighted that this situation with Terra and the macroeconomic scenario does not imply the possibility of a sudden recovery of the crypto market. This situation will require reflecting on what happened and wait for the foundations to be available for a more organic evolution, which first goes through recovery and confidence in this sector.

Novogratz’s statements take place amid the debate that the Terra ecosystem is experiencing internally to decide its future since the vote to determine if the network gets forked.
