The Fed Considers that It Would Take 5 Years to Develop an American CBDC

Brainard is concerned that Europe and Asia could issue CBDCs that threaten the status of the US dollar as a global reserve currency. Various countries are researching CBDCs, but many of them are still in the development stage, like in the case of China.

The US House Committee on Financial Services recently held a  hearing with Lael Brainard, the Vice-Chair of the US Fed. They met with her to analyze the risks and benefits of developing an American central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Brainard stated that it might take five years to implement the necessary security features and design features. For that reason, she considers that a CBDC would allow anticipating the future of the financial system rather than meeting current needs.

Among the risks of CBDCs, Brainard argued that stablecoins would become the dominant form of US digital dollars. In addition, she said that this could lead to the fragmentation of the US digital payment system.

Lael Brainard is also concerned that European and Asian central banks could issue unrivaled digital analogs to cash. That action would threaten the status of the US dollar as a global reserve currency.

The government official highlighted at the hearing that a CBDC project supported by the Fed would still need government approval. Congress and the White House must give the go-ahead to design and implement those digital assets.

Central Banks from Various Countries Are Researching CBDCs

The proliferation of CBDCs worldwide has raised questions about whether the United States has fallen behind. The international financial system has evolved, which might affect the status of the US dollar as a reserve currency.

Various countries are exploring CBDCs, but many are still in the research and development stage. For example, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) developed and launched the digital yuan (eCNY). That allowed daily payments for about two million yuan (USD 315,761) at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is researching CBDCs to develop a prototype in 2023 and introduce a European CBDC in 2025.

The committee also said some leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) have talked to various international organizations. They encouraged the IMF, the World Bank, and the BIS to analyze the role of CBDCs in improving cross-border payments and the global monetary system.

CBDCs Could Contribute to Evading the Sanctions Imposed by the US

The collapse of the algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST), among other recent events, has caused concerns over the US economy.

The report details that ongoing volatility and the collapse of UST could lead to financial instability within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. For that reason, some digital asset stakeholders have argued that central banks should prioritize the development of CBDC.

However, the committee experts consider that the initial interest in CBDCs in countries like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela may have been US sanctions evasion. The attractiveness of digital assets rapidly grew in Russia after the US and its allies imposed restrictions.

Current crypto assets like Bitcoin provide anonymity and decentralization, in contrast to the global banking sector. For that reason, various companies have refused to share user data despite the requirements of the sanctioning countries.

Central Africans Learn about Bitcoin from French-Speaking Bitcoiners

The delegation taught local merchants to use the Lightning network to send and receive sats quickly. A group of African countries learned about the benefits of including Bitcoin in their plans to strengthen the economy.

The Central African Republic is the second country after El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender. Several French-speaking bitcoiners recently arrived in Bangui, the capital, to teach about the pioneering cryptocurrency.

The delegation included mining expert Sébastien Gouspillou and former president of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council Jean-Marie Cambacérès.

David Oren, a privacy activist, and Nicholas Burtey, Founder of the company creating the wallet used in El Zonte, El Salvador, were also there.

People received the delegation with great interest in learning and clarifying doubts about Bitcoin. During the week, they held several meetings with government officials and civil society representatives.

The delegation did a workshop for local merchants who downloaded Bitcoin wallets and received a bonus of USD 10 in BTC. In that way, they could enjoy the experience of sending and receiving satoshis (sats) instantly through the Lightning network.

Bitcoin May Become a Solution to the Crisis in Africa

The Central African authorities and the economist and researcher Dominique Yamb Ntimba are sure that Bitcoin can be a solution. They think it will help the population face the economic crisis it is suffering.

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country prone to coups by armed groups controlling territory outside the small capital. In addition, people get by on an average income of below USD 500 per year.

The government must modernize the educational system, build new roads and strengthen the economy to improve that situation. Bitcoin seems to be an essential part of those plans.

The French-speaking delegation also spoke about Bitcoin at the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) convention center. That international organization includes countries on the continent like the Central African Republic, Gabon, Cameroon, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, and Equatorial Guinea.

The Central African Republic Continues Its Plan to Adopt Bitcoin

The CEMAC aims to promote the harmonized development of its member states within the framework of a common market. They all account for a total population of about 37 million people.

Those countries also seek to strengthen the competitiveness of economic and financial activities by harmonizing the rules governing them.

Nicholas Burtey talked about the uniqueness of Bitcoin and its differences from other cryptocurrencies. He also described the benefits of adopting Bitcoin in El Salvador since the government declared the crypto asset as legal tender.

The Central African Republic has continued with its plans around Bitcoin despite warnings by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That organization states that the pioneering cryptocurrency poses significant legal, transparency, and economic policy challenges.

However, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra said Bitcoin would improve conditions for citizens and includes his country as one of the most daring and visionary; that has provoked strong criticism as the adoption could allegedly sour relations with international institutions, and contribute to money laundering and tax evasion.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 30,227 and has accumulated a 4.4% gain over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 16.81 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 576.19 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Bitcoin Whales are Getting Weaker, and this Event Could Impact the Market

Currently, about 1,737 wallets house more than 1,000 bitcoins. Accumulation between these holders continues to decline, which would affect the market.

The amount of bitcoin (BTC) housed by addresses described as “whales” is falling. Currently, there are only 1,737 wallets with a balance registered at 1,000 bitcoins or more, the lowest peak in at least 22 months.

Glassnode presents that, on May 28, the number of bitcoin whales approached its lowest stage since 2020. And they could keep decreasing over time; even one of these whales abandoned the market after May 25.

Generally, a decrease of bitcoin whales highlights a lack of trust regarding where and how the price of this digital asset moves.

“Bitcoin whales” is the name that the crypto space gives to the most prominent holders of the leading crypto asset by market capitalization.

So, with these entities flocking to exchanges to offload their holdings, there is a clear bearish sign as the cryptocurrency falls to its lowest price level this year and struggles to retake $30,000.

The price of bitcoin is USD 29,300, according to the CriptoNoticias calculator. The cryptocurrency recovered 0.88% in the last 24 hours, but the figures are still red in price in the previous seven days, with a loss of almost 3%.

Bitcoin has lost more than 50% of its value in the past six months amid a sector-wide decline that has wiped over $1.5 billion off the global cryptocurrency market capitalization.

With more Whales Liquidating their Bitcoins, the Price Could Fall or Boost its Rise

In that sense, some experts believe that this bear market will stay for a long time. It is precisely what the specialist Ali Martínez highlighted; he believes that the digital asset price could keep crumbling down for a long, long time.

Martinez saw on Twitter that the most appropriate support level for bitcoin relies on $29,330 and $30,200, where more than 1.4 billion addresses house at least 860,000 bitcoins or more.

Bitcoin Needs to Stay above this Demand to Have a Chance to Meet a full Recovery

However, some signs mean that the price of bitcoin will not crumble down below $20,000 again. This mark is essential for the price history of the leading digital asset.

Historically, the reduction in bitcoin issuance (halving approximately every four years via halving) came along with increases in the price stages of the crypto asset. In the current location, after the 2020 halving, there has been a cap above $69,000. And in the previous one, the maximum had been reaching a peak registered at 20,000.

According to the ECB, the Middle Classes are the Ones with the less Digital Currencies

(European Central Bank) revealed a report that reflects the results of an online survey held in November 2021 regarding samples of citizens between 18 and 70 years of age from different EU nations about their availability to house crypto.

The report got named Decrypting financial stability risks in crypto-asset markets. It is a part of the financial stability report for May 2022.

Cryptocurrencies seem to matter to the institution itself, which is in charge of ensuring the stability of the financial structure and the financial health of its citizens. Citizens care differently, depending on their income. In the study, the least interested in crypto assets are the middle sectors of society, compared to those with higher and lower incomes.

Spain is the 2nd Country in the EU with Most Crypto Active Retail Investors

The report appeared due to the concern about the growing presence of institutional investors in the crypto space, recognizing the internal links between the traditional financial structure and the digital assets and the corresponding risks. Despite these risks, investors’ demand for crypto assets keeps reaching higher levels.

On the other hand, the Consumer Expectations Survey is a common type of operation in many nations and is executed by different entities. In Spain, the survey gets held by the Center for Sociological Research conducts a monthly survey from which the Consumer Confidence Index gets compiled.

 1,000 Euros For most Households

The ECB survey has included, on an experimental basis, questions about the possession of digital currencies in households based in countries such as the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and France. Countries that come in this order due to the highest amount of households saving cryptocurrencies.

The value of the digital assets that most of these households (37%) have does not reach 1,000 euros. Only a third of the surveyed households have crypto assets worth more than 5,000 euros. The surveyed citizens were approximately 3.3% of households in these European regions, with more than 5,000 euros in cryptocurrencies under their control.

ECB and the Urgent Approval of MiCA to Avoid Risks

The distribution of the possession of crypto assets based on household income is surprisingly striking. Moreover, the introduction of cryptocurrencies in households in a country gets measured by the higher-income homes. To give us an idea and make a rough estimate based on the data from the Family Budget Survey, 15% of Spanish households with a net monthly income above 3,300 euros have cryptocurrencies housed in their systems.

According to Mexican Millionaire Salinas Pliego Central banks are Fraudsters and Thieves

Salinas Pliego described inflation as a tax that damages the people with needs. The bitcoin enthusiast said excessive regulation obstructs Improvements.

The Mexican businessman, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, attacks the central banks and their directors. He openly expressed that Christine Lagarde, from the European Central Bank, is a fraudster, a thief. He just had to talk about it because, under her leadership, the acquisition capacity was getting confiscated from the Europeans.

He calls those entities “fraudsters” because he has generated twice as much money as the funds in circulation in the last two years. The businessman adds that the US official is stealing their money from the gringos.

The words of the founder of the business conglomerate, Grupo Salinas, appeared in an interview days ago with the content creator Roberto Martínez Osuna. The conversation got revealed via the YouTube channel “Roberto MTZ.”

The words regarding the central bankers got said by Salinas Pliego after reflecting on inflation rates and their consequences on markets worldwide. Like others familiar with the matter, he refers to inflation as a disguised tax and explains that the inflation tax is a dreadful tax.

He sustained that it is tough to realize this taxation mode’s perverse. In addition, it harms those who need more financial stability; those who get most ruined by the inflationary tax are pensioners.

Also, Salinas Pliego explains that inflation benefits those who owe money because the debt is getting smaller and smaller. He adds that those who manufacture fake money are the people working for the current administrations in their respective countries.

These Attacks are not New

It is not the first time Salinas Pliego openly talks about Central Bankers. In July of last year, he highlighted that government people don’t sympathize with bitcoin because people can get out of their fiat trap. After all, that’s what fiat money is: a big fraud.

Almost a year later, he appears to think the same still. In a recent interview with Martínez Osuna, the businessman described bitcoin as “the new digital gold.” He also said it is incomparable with other digital assets that he described as crap.

Central Bank Digital Currencies are the Worst Idea

After expressing his thoughts about bitcoin, Salinas Pliego changed the talk course toward central bank digital currencies (or CBDC, for its acronym in English).

These CBDCs are digital representations of existing fiat money. The CBDCs already created work through centralized databases held by the State and do not give the usual privacy cryptocurrencies offer when it comes to transactions.

The Mexican chairman says it is a horrible idea and adds he hopes no one accepts them under any circumstances because, once people take them, the government can know how much each person has in their wallet.

Vitalik Buterin Believes DAI Will Not Suffer the Same Fate as TerraUSD

Buterin thinks a stablecoin that generates a 20% annual return is akin to a Ponzi scheme. The co-creator of the Ethereum network says that a stablecoin is not safe just because it has passed some tests.

The recent drop in the TerraUSD (UST) price sent the overall cryptocurrency world into turmoil. The Terra network had designed that token to be a stablecoin and always trade at USD 1. Many wonder whether the same could happen to DAI from the Ethereum network, not collateralized by fiat money.

Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of the Ethereum network, believes that this will not happen and explains why. In contrast to RAI, a stablecoin backed only by Ether (ETH), DAI has multiple collaterals in addition to ETH.

However, the ideas of the Russian-Canadian programmer can apply to DAI, a much more widely used stablecoin. Buterin writes that DAI is a hybrid system backed by centralized and decentralized collaterals. Although that is a reasonable option for their product, it complicates the analysis.

It was necessary to burn (destroy) the US dollar equivalent of the Terra (LUNA) cryptocurrency for issuing UST. The same happens in reverse since burning UST allows making an equivalent amount of LUNA available.

A seigniorage mechanism stimulated the market to expand or reduce the UST currency to keep the price at USD 1. That was not sustainable, which led the price of UST and LUNA to collapse.

The Differences Between RAI and TerraUSD Stablecoins

The mechanism is different between the stablecoins RAI (also applied to DAI) and TerraUSD. After depositing ETH as collateral in a smart contract, the lender can withdraw an amount of RAI and recover the ETH when repaying the debt.

Lenders usually do that to leverage ETH and go long if they think the price of that volatile asset will rise. They also do it to arbitrage by borrowing RAI to make a profit on the difference with an investment whose price increases.

Buterin explains that it would not be a problem if demand for RAI dropped considerably, even if only one holder remained. The redemption rate would skyrocket until the liquidation of the vaults of all lenders occurs. The remaining holder could buy the vault at the liquidation auction, use his RAI to pay off his debt, and withdraw the ETH.

The leader of Ethereum is confident that RAI and similarly functioning coins are more robust than a system like Terra.

The Lessons of What Happened with TerraUSD and LUNA

The developer reflects on what is possible to learn from the situation that the cryptocurrency industry experienced in the last month.

Buterin argues that cryptocurrencies must move away from the attitude of wanting to achieve security by relying on infinite growth. He adds that it is unacceptable to say that the fiat world works the same since it does not offer higher returns than the regular economy.

The co-founder of Ethereum proposes testing various developments in extreme situations. He even points out that they might not be safe even if they pass the tests, as they might be fragile for other reasons.

What Buterin said suggests that the user should be wary of anything that promises returns that are too good to be true. In the case of using stablecoins, it is necessary to evaluate their risks and benefits to make an appropriate decision.
