According to Billionaire Seth Klarman, No One Needs to Own Crypto

Billionaire Seth Klarman highlighted in an interview with Harvard University that he could not see the point of digital assets because people would not need to own them.

Billionaire Seth Klarman, an American investor, and hedge fund manager, is the latest wealthy personality to open up and share his thoughts against Bitcoin and crypto assets. He said in an interview with Harvard Business School that he could not see the point of digital assets.

Klarman is the CEO and portfolio manager of the Baupost Group, a Boston-based hedge fund he co-founded in 1982. The investment firm moves around $30 billion. According to Forbes, his estimated net worth fluctuates around $1.5 billion.

Klarman spoke about various subjects, including the current global crisis, gold, and crypto. Regarding digital assets, Klarman said he could not see the point of having digital assets. It has this feeling of being like just catnip to techies.

He added that the idea of using more energy than a country to mine extra crypto, to solve mathematical problems that would not need to get solved seems a crazy task.

He further wondered why people would need 10 or 50 different digital assets. He does not think anyone needs to own them. On gold and the dollar, Klarman acknowledged that he does trust gold because he thinks gold is a valuable asset during a crisis.

The World Becomes Hell and the Conflict Spreads

The billionaire thinks that people will worry about having enough gold because they would not want to run out of money in a desperate moment.

Regarding the US dollar, he noted that The United States of America had an advantage as the dollar has been the world’s reserve asset for a long time. It is unlikely to change anytime soon.

However, he does not believe that a replacement for the dollar will come from China. He said it is hard to imagine people accepting the Chinese currency, but he would not see crypto assets as a substitute for the dollar.

Anti-Bitcoin Rich Club

Klarman is a member of a kind of anti-crypto millionaire club. The billionaire Sam Zell recently explained why he stayed away from Bitcoin at all costs. And another wealthy personality, Jeffrey Gundlach, highlighted that it would not be a surprise if BTC fell to a figure registered at $10,000. Another of the rich who opened up his mind against crypto was Charles Munger, who said that he wished Bitcoin had never existed.

Uphold Would Have Blocked Many Accounts Months before Revealing its Departure from Venezuela

Venezuelan users have until July 31 to extract their funds. Uphold’s departure happened due to the sanctions applied by the United States of America against Venezuela.

Uphold revealed today, June 23, that it would stop bringing services to Venezuela. The digital asset entity requested users residing in the Caribbean nation extract their funds as soon as possible, conveniently before July 31. However, many months before this departure announcement took effect; the company would have suspended many of its users’ accounts, in many cases hiding the real reasons behind the closure.

Some affected detailed how their business account registered with Uphold from Venezuela received a restriction from Uphold. To date, many have not received a satisfactory response from support. The profile served for receiving and sending payments in the software development field.

The support service apparently is not responding to the users’ demands. Those affected are even sending documentation, but they received no response. Before restricting access to the accounts, some users receive an email to make a withdrawal of funds.

More and More Cases

In social networks, in recent months, it was common to find comments from people highlighting that Uphold had decided to suspend their account, allegedly arbitrarily.

Blockages have been frequent among Venezuelans, especially in the community of software developers, due to all the limitations of accessing foreign currency accounts in the nation, with Uphold and PayPal being the most prominent alternative to solve this problem.

However, it is vital to consider that the blocks do not seem to be an exclusive service aimed at Venezuela since many users from other nations have also highlighted restrictions on their accounts.

Bitcoin Cannot Get Blocked

This situation shows how centralized entities can have complete access to their features and even their services whenever they want. In case of governmental struggles, they can even dare to suspend their services and features to citizens of a specific nationality.

In this case, Venezuelans have been quite vulnerable since Uphold was a popular platform among freelancers and used as a vehicle for receiving international payments for providing their services.

In this situation, Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies prove to be powerful tools. For more existing prohibitions, as long as they get housed in a self-custody wallet, they cannot get restrained or confiscated by any entity or administration.

Uphold Users in Venezuela Lament that Now there is One Less Option to Operate with bitcoin

Some users fear the stampede of digital assets services in the nation will keep affecting the crypto space. Some Venezuelans agree with the benefits of peer-to-peer bitcoin trade and payments.

The trading bitcoin exchange and other digital assets Uphold revealed the closure of its financial activities in Venezuela and thus joined the group of entities leaving this region due to the punishments imposed on the country by the United States of America.

Uphold is not the first entity to part ways with the Venezuelan territory; it certainly won’t be the last. A report revealed in 2020 by Venezuelan economist Luis Oliveros highlighted the impact that US financial sanctions have on the economy and other sectors of the region.

The Document Revealed that US Sanctions Harm the Most Vulnerable citizens in Venezuela

For the citizens, this implies a decline in financial services as risk aversion increases from banks and other entities active in Venezuela or with Venezuelan institutions, which get forced to follow the US punishments.

That is what Venezuelans are lamenting on Twitter now, when they must withdraw, before July 31, their bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies that they have in Uphold. Uphold will no longer receive deposits from Venezuelan residents and suspend all accounts with a zero balance.

One Less Option for Users of Bitcoin and other Digital Assets in Venezuela

Following Uphold’s news, many users went to Twitter to express their concern about the situation.

Among the tweets, it can get read that this situation has been the worst news to start the day, and it is unfortunate because many freelancers used it to save money. Those are thoughts that come to the public from the sudden dismissal of Venezuela from the service of trading bitcoin and other digital currencies.

There are many regrets about the decision of Uphold to shut down operations; however, there is a stronger focus on the constant departure of the country’s crypto networks.

In 2019, the Bittrex cryptocurrency exchange was the one that suspended its services to Venezuelan citizens, even though it did not highlight the reasons that guided the entity to make that fatal move.

Later, in September of last year, Cryptobuyer Pro, the exchange founded by the Cryptobuyer entity, also stopped its activities in Venezuela. And the same thing happened with the peer-to-peer bitcoin (BTC) exchange Paxful, which left behind its activities in the country in 2020.

Sanctions and More Sanctions

Among the concerns of Venezuelans for Uphold’s abandonment, the sanctions of the United States of America are the ones that affect ordinary citizens more. The affected say, through Twitter, that the worst thing is that the righteous are paying more than the sinners. Meanwhile, some say it is necessary to re-consider the punishments that the United States of America imposes on Venezuela due to the problems with the administration.

Bitcoin at Risk of Further Losses Amid Sell-off Among Miners

Miner sales and options contract expiration could put further downward pressure on Bitcoin.

Amid the general price decline in the crypto market, Bitcoin miners started to liquidate their reserves to deal with their operating costs.

Some major US-listed crypto mining entities like Marathon Digital and Riot Blockchain sold more bitcoin than they collected last month. According to a report from Arcane Research, miners are liquidating their Bitcoin reserves to record levels to deal with the struggles of their production.

In the first four months of 2022, public mining entities got rid of 30% of their Bitcoin production. The plummeting profitability of mining forced these miners to increase their sell rate to more than 100% of the production in May.

Miners Liquidate their Bitcoin Reserves

The investigation highlights that this increase in Bitcoin exits from the wallets of miners, who are the holders, could lead to a decline in the prices of the flagship digital asset.

In short, this situation means that operating costs surpassed miners’ profits, forcing them to draw from their Bitcoin savings to generate the difference, which could translate into fear sentiment for the market. Arcane Research analyst Jaran Mellerud highlighted that if they get obliged to liquidate a sizable piece of these holdings, it could be helpful to boost the price of Bitcoin even further.

On the other hand, a recent Coin Metrics report also highlighted the current sell-off trend among miners, as reported by Crypto Briefing. According to that cryptocurrency analytics firm, miners have sold at least $500 million worth of Bitcoin in June, reducing their holdings by almost a third part.

Miners’ wallets had held bitcoin throughout 2022, but they began minimizing their holdings amid the recent crash in the market. Nonetheless, according to the report, miners still hold at least $2.5 billion worth of Bitcoin.

The reports coincide with recent announcements by Toronto, Canada-based miner Bitfarms, which highlighted that it had sold 3,000 BTC of its reserves, valued at just over $60 million, to reduce its debt and increase its liquidity.

Bearish Pressure, Miners in Trouble

Meanwhile, beyond the series of liquidations, other metrics also point to miners potentially going trhough significant difficulties amid declining prices.

According to Crypto Briefing, data from the Bitcoin Hash Ribbons indicator, which measures the network’s 30- and 60-day hash rate moving standards, also explains that BTC miners are turning off their machines as it starts to cost more to deal with them.

Bitcoin Price Keeps its Position Despite the US Wanting to Apply More Regulations to the Market

Bitcoin must adhere to current regulations, says the Fed. Bitcoin showed a balanced behavior when it reached 20,000 dollars per unit.

The president of the Federal Reserve of the United States, Jerome Powell, highlighted before the congress that more regulation on activities with bitcoin and other digital assets was required. Although the bitcoin price fluctuated moderately lower after the revelation, it has since recovered and is holding around $20,300 this Thursday.

Powell stood before the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs to show the Monetary Policy Report. This report gets submitted by the Banking Committee twice a year. In this way, we had some advances in what the American economy holds for the rest of the year.

In his earlier statement, Powell explained that inflation surpassed the Fed’s target of 2% this year. Regarding the inflation of 8.6% registered last year, Powell aimed at interest rate increases as the most prominent procedure to minimize the high peaks of the price of products and services.

More Regulation for Digital Assets

Arizona Senator Krysten Sinema referred at the event to the fact that digital assets experienced considerable volatility in recent weeks. Given this situation, he asked Powell if the Fed was aware of this matter and what consequences it would carry for the economic system.

The fact that Powell flagged the need for more regulative policies for bitcoin and the other digital assets had no apparent impact on the price. The ratification of the upcoming increases, executed when the Fed highlighted the 75 basis point increase, had a calming effect on investors.

The price moved through a sum registered at USD 20,567, a level similar to the one it had last Monday 20th. Bitcoin shows decay parallel with the beginning of the year of 55.4% and a 35% drop so far in June. This last amount is the most prominent monthly decrease experienced in 2022.

Powell Excluded a Recession Situation

Regarding the prospects for the economy in the following months, many senators openly pointed to the concern that the procedures to control inflation, which restrains spending and consumption, could cause a recessive period.

An increasing number of institutions observe a high probability of a recession in the next year. Powell, however, still says that predicting recessions is considerably difficult, though he highlighted that he does not see the risk as high.

Powell said the US economy is still strong, and spending is strong. Consumers are robust enough, businesses are in good shape; monetary policy is famous for being a blunt tool, and there is a risk that weaker results are certainly possible, but that is not the primary goal.

Analysis and Prediction of the Price of Ether Indicate that the Cryptocurrency Is at Risk

The recovery in the Ether price would reduce panic in cryptocurrency markets and prevent a significant drop in mining activity. If the changes to the consensus protocol do not occur soon, the value of ETH might collapse further.

Ether (ETH), the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network, has suffered several delays with the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) upgrade. The fear among investors and miners due to the last drop in the price reduced the profitability of mining with graphics processing units (GPUs).

Since the current landscape in the market is considerably alarming, many believe Ether could collapse to lower levels. It would be necessary to make an urgent change in the protocols to prevent that from happening. The price of ETH flirted with USD 850 some days ago but is now around USD 1,090.

Ether is trading at around USD 1,094 and has accumulated a 2.2% gain over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 13.10 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 132.68, according to CoinGecko.

Ether Could Stop the Chaotic Situation within the Crypto Market

The recovery in the price of Ether may be crucial to reducing panic in cryptocurrency markets and miners. If that did not happen, there might be a significant drop in the ETH mining activity and the value of the cryptocurrency.

The Ethereum upgrade to change the mining consensus to PoS could cause prices to rise above USD 1,500. However, if that did not happen soon, there might be an increase in sales of the second-largest cryptocurrency.

Regardless of the change, people who have bought GPUs over the last few months will suffer the consequences. There has already been an investment of USD 15,000 million in GPUs and mining equipment in just 18 months. A change would hurt the mining activity but might save Ethereum from a steep decline, bringing new hope.

The Analysis and Prediction of the Ether Price in the Short Term

If the changes to the consensus protocol do not occur soon, the price of ETH might drop by at least 20%. The technical indicators in the 4-hour timeframe already show that there will be a crash soon.

The value of Ether might fall back to the demand area of around USD 1,000 within the next few hours. While the ENV channels, which rejected a bullish continuation, validate that, the candlesticks make their way to the lower side.

In addition, the RSI has rejected the bullish continuation and is now on its way to around 30 points. The MACD fell below 0 points and made a bearish crossover with the EMAs, thus confirming further drops. In addition, the low volume and the sales have prevailed.

Investors should pay attention to the price of ETH in the coming days and watch the supports USD 1,000, USD 940, and USD 814.

It is always recommendable to research before investing in any asset to avoid making wrong decisions. Knowing how the price of Ether or another cryptocurrency behaves allows predicting where it might head next.
