Uphold Said they Would Return to Venezuela if Sanctions Got Lifted

0

Uphold highlighted that the magnitude of the punishments is so high that it prevents them from giving their service in the country. Venezuela represents 2% of the total transaction volume of the entity in 2022.

The Farewell of Uphold from Venezuela arrives at a difficult time. The platform for the exchange of bitcoin, digital assets, and currencies reaffirmed that it is abandoning the nation due to the series of punishments imposed by the United States of America since 2017 on state entities and representatives of the national administration.

Although the relationship between the administration of Joe Biden and Nicolás Maduro has worsened over the years, a recent relaxation of financial punishments seemed like a relief for the entity. However, this slight relaxation did not stop Uphold from deciding to move on from the oil nation.

The recent procedures highlighted by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, dependent on the United States Department of the Treasury, have generated more difficulty in complying with the financial punishments on Venezuela. Unfortunately, this has left uphold off guard and now has to stop carrying out its activities in that nation.

Uphold said about the possibility of suspending the features only to the entities or officials that appear on the OFAC list and not to the entire Venezuelan market and pointed out that the magnitude of the sanctions makes it hard to continue working in the country.

Uphold also highlighted that the recent complaints about account suspensions of Venezuelan users do not get linked to their exit from the local market.

Venezuela and Uphold

According to the company, the Venezuelan market was one of the first to benefit from Uphold’s services. Regarding the number of active users and the transaction volumes registered in 2022, the company preferred not to expose data related to that subject. Despite this situation, the platform highlighted that Venezuela represents approximately 2% of Uphold’s total transaction volume this year.

The suspension of Uphold’s services for Venezuelan users will not affect Uphold’s activities worldwide nor its current financial status. But the company expressed they are deeply sorry to abandon the nation because Venezuela was one of the first countries to receive Uphold; the network had an active and solid community.

According to Uphold’s transparency report, the company maintains a volume of transactions of about 30,000 million dollars worldwide. In Venezuela, at least 600 million dollars got traded annually.

Would Uphold Ever Return to a Country Like Venezuela?

Uphold’s services have been gaining popularity among Venezuelans for years. The reason is that the country has maintained certain relaxations since 2003, and Uphold is the only entity with direct access to foreign assets. This status encouraged users to use alternatives such as exchange houses, being Uphold one of the best options to carry out financial activities in that area.

Currently, the Venezuelan administration maintains exchange control. However, it has granted freedoms so that commercial establishments, or natural persons, trade with assets such as the United States dollar, but they must pay more taxes.

Bitcoin Price Drops 3% to 10-Day Lows as Ether Approaches $1,000

The crypto market suffers amid challenging regulatory events in both the United States and Europe.

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) lost 3% in an hour and that of Ether (ETH) approached $1,000 on June 30, as pessimism took control of the cryptocurrency markets.

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed the BTC/USD pair hitting $19,224 on Bitstamp during Asian trading, the lowest since June 19.

The lack of momentum on the upside, combined with the failure to reclaim critical support from the 200-week moving average, set the stage for further weakness in Bitcoin. The largest cryptocurrency thus plunged into the support zone defined a day earlier by Cointelegraph contributor Michaël van de Poppe.

Meanwhile, traders toyed with the idea of a relief bounce back towards $20,000.

Traders Eye a “Sweep Low” for BTC

Twitter user @pedma7 posted a note claiming that, “I expect more range trading within this prices as breakouts and breakdowns take longer to happen and prices are getting pretty extended from their averages. #BTC using this hourly 50MA for short-term retraces of this downtrend, so I’d expect a reversion pretty soon to that mean.”

“We are looking for a sweep of the lows and a pullback before considering going long because this is a very strong downtrend and we want to see some strength first,” trading platform Cryptop told its Twitter followers in a part of a new update.

News that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had rejected an application by Grayscale to convert its Bitcoin investment vehicle, the Grayscale Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC), into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) did not help the feeling.

Regulatory pressure also came from the European Union, which voted to increase restrictions on cryptocurrency movements.

“The agreement extends the so-called ‘travel rule’, already existing in traditional finance, to cover transfers in crypto assets. This rule requires that information about the origin of the asset and its beneficiary travel with the transaction and be stored on both sides of the transfer”, explains a press release on the measure:

“Crypto asset service providers (CASPs) will be required to provide this information to the competent authorities if an investigation into money laundering and terrorist financing is carried out.”

UNUS SED LEO Rises as Bitfinex Longs Cool

As expected, altcoins continued the depressed mood of the day, with the ETH/USD pair heading towards the $1,000 support for the first time in ten days.

Only the UNUS SED LEO (LEO) token from major exchange Bitfinex conspicuously bucked the trend, gaining 3.5% on the day and extending the monthly return above 20%.

The platform had previously made headlines for the exponential growth of its BTC/USD long positions, which leveled off in the second half of June.

Gavin Wood Announces Gov 2: Polkadot’s New Governance Model

This happened during Decoded 2022 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Gavin Wood’s presentation was one of the most applauded of the event. The implementation of Gov 2 will be carried out in the first instance in Kusama, Polkadot’s Canarian network.

The goal of “Gov 2” is to replace the current council-led government with a more open and decentralized structure.

During Decoded 2022, a Polkadot event that is taking place in different cities in parallel, its founder Gavin Wood explained through his talk in Buenos Aires, the new on-chain governance system that will govern Polkadot layer 0 blockchains and Kusama.

Wood in Decoded 2022

During the event, Wood is quoted as saying that, “We want to lower the barriers to make a proposal. We want voting for them to be easy and cheap for people, and for unlimited referendums to be held at the same time. But how to do it safely?

In his presentation, the also co-founder of Ethereum explained that the main objective of Gov 2 is to increase the number of collective decisions that the Polkadot government system can make.

To achieve this, Wood announced the origin of the Polkadot Fellowship, which will be made up of a group of experts, most of whom are self-employed from Polkadot.

With Gov 2, anyone can submit a proposal, at any time and as often as they please. Thus, there will no longer be a limit on the number of referendums open simultaneously.

“The Fellowship has no decision-making power over changes to the protocol. Its only power is to declare proposals as safe and urgent. It is an oracle nothing more,” he added.

In short, with this new governance model, the people who make a proposal will have to define their type. Depending on its level of complexity, the Fellowship must define the security measures.

“Members will obtain a position according to their levels of experience and commitment, being recognized by their peers and by the members of the highest level, through a general referendum.”

Polkadot Ambassadors’ Opinions on Gov 2

Undoubtedly, Gavin Wood’s presentation in Buenos Aires was one of the most important of the event. About it CriptoMacZam, ambassador of the Darwinia Network and DICO projects —which are part of the DotSama ecosystem— commented that it was one of the funniest and most playful of the day.

On Gov 2, he thinks that, “Currently, it is perceived that governance is a slow mechanism… They want to streamline and that is very good, but it can be dangerous. A balance must be sought between agility and security.”

Besides, Maarmapa, ambassador of Polkadot and Kusama, highlighted the community’s welcome towards Gavin Wood. In addition, he stressed that thanks to Gov 2, the number of proposals they expect to receive will increase. He claims that, “The entry barrier to generate proposals decreases, and the more there are, the better. The ecosystem without community does not exist, because each project depends on the community, regardless of the technology”.

As usual in this project, Gov 2 will be implemented first in Kusama, Polkadot’s Canary network.

Fundstrat Analyst Predicts Bitcoin (BTC) Price at $13,000

BTC prices could quickly fall in a final capitulation. This would be similar to the 82% drop recorded in the last cycle. Shrimps continue to accumulate sats during the bear market.

The pain may not be over for cryptocurrencies yet, with one analyst predicting a final capitulation that sees Bitcoin price as low as $13,000 or even $12,500.

Bitcoin is teetering at the $20,000 psychological price level at the time of writing, having dropped another 1.3% on the day. It has remained in this range-bound channel for the past 10 days or so, but could quickly head south, according to one analyst.

Fundstrat technical strategist Mark Newton said there is a good chance of a final capitulation event before the market bottoms out.

“Most short-term technical data point to an above-average probability of a final washout-style decline before bottoming out.”

Bitcoin price has room to drop as low as $12,500 to $13,000, “which I expect to be a great place for medium-term buyers to add to longs,” he wrote, according to Bloomberg.

Capitulations in Previous Cycles

A drop in those prices would be an 82% correction from their all-time high. Bitcoin is currently down 71% from its peak, so using this as a guide might reinforce the premise.

In the previous market cycle, the price of Bitcoin reached a high of $20,000 in December 2017 before falling to $3,200 in December of the following year. This drop was 82% similar, so if history checks out, it’s plausible it could happen again. There was also a final capitulation event in November 2018 that wiped out an additional 50% in the price of Bitcoin.

The previous cycle saw BTC prices shed a similar 84% in the 2015 bear market that followed their 2014 peak.

Bitcoin prices hit a low of $17,760 on June 19 before recovering to as high as $21,600. However, the bears are still in full control of the markets. Continued selling pressure from miners could add to the downside.

Oanda Senior Market Analyst Craig Erlam commented that there is some relief given the series of negative headlines in recent months, before adding that, “I’m afraid there will be more in the coming weeks, and I wonder if the community does too, given their inability to gain traction above $20,000.”

Accumulating Sats

On-chain analytics provider Glassnode has noted that some accumulation is still taking place, especially in the smallholder group. On Twitter, Glassnode posted that, “Within the extremely challenging #Bitcoin market conditions of 2022, there are three entity cohorts with very interesting dynamics: – Shrimp < 1 $BTC are stacking; – Whales > 1k $BTC are stacking; and – Miners are distributing.”

Glassnode noted that small Bitcoin holders with less than one coin, whom they call “shrimp,” have been adding to their balance at the most aggressive rate since March 2020.

Additionally, whales with over a thousand coins are also aggressively adding to their balance, acquiring 140,000 BTC per month directly from exchanges.

Lazarus Group Allegedly Behind Harmony Protocol’s Horizon Bridge Hack

According to research firm Elliptic, Lazarus Group is behind the Harmony Protocol Horizon Bridge hack.

Lazarus Group, a North Korean cybercriminal group, may be behind the Harmony Protocol Horizon bridge hack, according to a recent investigation.

According to research firm Elliptic, Lazarus Group is behind the Harmony Protocol Horizon bridge hack that led to the theft of $100 million in cryptocurrencies.

The accusation is based on a tracking of the stolen cryptocurrencies with the aim of identifying who is moving them through the Web and, due to the fact that the laundering method bears its characteristics, Lazarus Group would be the main suspect in the hack:

“There are strong indications that North Korea’s Lazarus Group may be responsible for this theft, based on the nature of the hack and subsequent laundering of the stolen funds.”

Harmony Protocol: A $100 Million Hack

On June 23, Harmony Protocol announced that it had suffered a $100 million hack in various crypto assets through a Horizon bridge exploit.

As reported by BeInCrypto, the stolen cryptocurrencies were sent to the hacker’s Ethereum address. In this way, Horizon became the third major bridge to suffer an exploit so far this year.

Subsequently, on June 27, the hacker began moving ETH to Tornado Cash. So far, just over 35,000 ETH ($39 million) of the stolen funds have been sent to the popular cryptocurrency mixer.

Amidst the uncertainty caused by the hack, on June 28 the Harmony Protocol team reached out to the crypto community on Twitter to provide some reassurance:

“Our community and ecosystem are everything, and we want to show our support and appreciation for all of you.

Harmony’s content and communications teams will be significantly ramping up joint marketing efforts in the coming weeks, showcasing the great teams and apps in our ecosystem.”

Lazarus Group Becomes Prime Suspect

Over the years, North Korea’s Lazarus Group has been the subject of major crypto heists totaling more than $2 billion. The most famous and recent was the nearly $600 million hacks of Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge.

In this sense, the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned the address that received the stolen funds.

Elliptic notes that the Horizon bridge hack was the product of a social engineering attack on members of the Harmony team, noting that “these techniques have been used frequently by the Lazarus Group.” Furthermore, the research team adds that, “Lazarus Group tends to focus on APAC [Asia-Pacific Region] based targets, perhaps for language reasons. Although Harmony is based in the US, much of the core team has ties to the APAC region.”

At the same time, Elliptic emphasizes the relationship between timing and movement of funds:

“The relatively short periods during which stolen funds stop being pulled out of Tornado cash are consistent with APAC overnight hours.”

Despite the Lazarus Group’s prominence in cyberattacks, the recent market crash has seen the value of stolen cryptocurrencies held by North Korea drop by more than 60%, as reported by BeInCrypto.

According to a Report, Russia Approved Tax Exemption for Digital Asset Issuing Entities

The bill in Russia would have received approval by the State Duma and explained that issuers of digital assets are exempt from paying value-added tax. Income tax should still get paid, but this payment would get reduced to 13% – 15% depending on the case.

Recently published reports highlight that legislators in Russia recently approved a bill with which they establish tax guidelines applicable to digital assets, specifically highlighting that the issuers of said currencies are exempt from paying value-added tax.

Tax Exemption for Issuers of Digital Currencies

This information got revealed by a report highlighted by the Reuters news agency, in which they expressed that the bill got approved in the second and third discussions led by the members of the State Duma today. What is interesting here is that the proposal exempts the issuers of digital currencies from paying the value-added tax and the operators of information systems that help the issuance to take effect.

The value-added tax traditionally applies to goods focused on how much their value has grown at each production stage. But reports highlighted by various tax organizations presented that almost no nation set the payment of said duty to the exchange of digital assets.

However, this does not exempt the entities from paying income tax, although it poses a significant reduction in the case of digital assets. In Russia, this value got set at 20% for various assets, but for digital currencies, it will be 13% for Russian companies and 15% for other responsible entities.

Although the State Duma has already approved the policy, it still requires the upper house and President Vladimir Putin’s approval to get enacted as official law.

Ambiguous Stances Regarding the Assets in Russia

The enacted procedure in the Russian parliament represents the most recent effort in the Soviet nation to give legal frameworks to digital assets, even though there are conflicting positions regarding the issuance, circulation, and commercialization of said currencies at the local level.

On the one hand, we have President Putin himself and several high-ranking officials that vote for these currencies to get legally approached as soon as possible to legitimize their position in the economy. But the Bank of Russia is against such a possibility, claiming that digital assets could weaken the local economy and become a lethal weapon against the nation’s interests.

The problem arrived during a difficult moment for the Soviet country because due to the armed incursion against the Ukrainian region, a prominent group of nations and international organizations have imposed several punishments and financial blockades to close channels for financing war.

The question also touches on some points, like whether Russia could look to digital assets as a tool to avoid such punishments. Some embrace this possibility by highlighting the operational features of digital assets. Others assure that this would be impossible since the sector’s market does not have enough liquidity to back up the requirements of such a big nation.
