How to Identify and Avoid a Cryptocurrency Pump-and-Dump Scheme

Having a good understanding of cryptocurrency investing means keeping an eye out for fraudulent projects that threaten to deplete your assets overnight, also known as pump-and-dump schemes.

Learning about the cryptocurrency ecosystem is critical for investors during a bear market pending a bull cycle.

In February this year, celebrities Jake Paul, Soulja Boy, and Nick Carter, among others, were being sued for their involvement in the SafeMoon crypto scheme. The claims said that the contracted stars made “false or misleading statements” to encourage fans to invest in the digital currency.

SafeMoon LLC, the company behind the $SAFEMOON token, is currently facing a lawsuit along with several famous promoters and social media stars for allegedly deceptively promoting and selling a fake scheme. The company is accused of collaborating with celebrities and others to make the investment appear legitimate and attract investors on social media, while “hiding its control” over the tokens being sold.

How Pump-and-Dump Scheme Works

Cryptocurrency pump-and-dump is an orchestrated fraud that involves tricking investors into buying artificially inflated tokens that are often marketed and promoted by celebrities and social media influencers. The SafeMoon token is one of the most high-profile examples of an alleged pump-and-dump scheme involving prominent celebrities such as Nick Carter, Soulja Boy, Lil Yachty, and YouTubers Jake Paul and Ben Phillips.

Once investors have bought the tokens at inflated prices, the people who own the most tokens sell them, causing the prices of the tokens to drop immediately. While scammers disguise pump-and-dump schemes under the guise of creating the next batch of million-dollar cryptocurrencies, savvy investors have the advantage of identifying and avoiding their involvement.

Pump-and-dump schemes are often accompanied by false promises around three broad categories: solving real-world use cases, exorbitant guaranteed returns, and open endorsements from celebrities and influencers.

The long-term success of a cryptocurrency largely depends on the use cases it serves. Like this, people who support pump-and-dump projects often get involved by highlighting the use cases the token is meant to serve. In addition, these types of schemes often attract celebrities through advance payments of cash and internal project tokens.

Advice: “Do your Own Research”

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in terms of trading volume, also warned investors not to follow investment advice from celebrities and influencers. On Twitter, Binance posted that, “Superstars ≠ crypto experts. Music artist @JBALVIN says ‘do your own research’. On 2.13 when big names try to give you crypto advice — 🚨 sound #CryptoCelebAlert and grab 1/2222 NFTs of basketball star @JimmyButler!”

In the next bull cycle, traditional and crypto investors around the world will step up their efforts to recoup their losses from the ongoing bear market. Knowing this information, scammers will try to find opportunities to trick unsuspecting investors by presenting unrealistic returns. As a result, researching (DYOR) is one of the best cryptocurrency tips.

Musk under Investigation?

Elon Musk was recently accused of manipulating cryptocurrency prices by prominent South African billionaire businesswoman Magda Wierzycka.

Wierzycka believes that Musk’s social media activity and its implications for the price of Bitcoin (BTC) should have made him the subject of an investigation by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. He believes that Musk knowingly inflated the price of Bitcoin through tweets, including those mentioning Tesla’s $1.5 billion purchase of BTC, and then “sold much of his exposure at the peak.”

Three Arrows Capital, the Fund that Went from US$10 Billion to US$0

3AC, as it is also known, went bankrupt due to the collapse of cryptocurrencies and its founders are missing.

Just over four months ago, Three Arrows Capital, one of the world’s largest crypto hedge funds, was managing around $10 billion in assets, and co-founder Zhu Su was quite fond of making public appearances and sharing his opinions.

However, with the collapse of cryptocurrencies, which have plummeted more than 54% so far this year, the fund had to file on July 1 for Chapter 15 of the US Bankruptcy Law in the Southern District of New York.

Events Unfolded

3AC, as the company is also known, borrowed money from various investors and financial players from other industries, and then invested the capital in other crypto projects. The company had gained a certain prestige for being in business for around 10 years.

The fall of Three Arrows Capital began at the same time and for the same reasons as with most cryptocurrencies. In May, the terraUSD stablecoin, which was pegged to the US dollar, lost almost all of its value. It was launched at the cost of US$1 and it was expected that, having a strong backing asset, it would be immune to the high volatility characteristic of cryptocurrencies.

Before filing for bankruptcy, the company moved its registered office from Singapore to the Virgin Islands, to avoid problems with regulatory authorities. From there, it began a liquidation process to pay off its debts, which included defaulting on a $670 million loan.

Now…What?

Now, the co-founders of the failed cryptocurrency hedge fund, Zhu Su and Kyle Davies, have been missing for several days, according to New York court documents.

Adam Goldberg, the lawyer in charge of the liquidation of the crypto hedge fund, assures that he does not know where the founders are and they have not shown interest in collaborating in a significant way. Following this, Chief Judge Martin Glenn of the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has given the liquidators permission to subpoena Zhu and Davies.

In response to the accusations, Zhu Su posted recently on Twitter that, “Sadly, our good faith to cooperate with the Liquidators was met with baiting. Hope that they did exercise good faith with the StarkWare token warrants.”

In addition to his brief appearance on social media, the Three Arrows Capital co-founder posted two letters from his attorney. In one, they claimed that they and their families had received “threats of physical violence.” On the other, he made clear his concern about the mismanagement that the liquidators were carrying out with the assets of his hedge fund.

Lawyers for the plaintiff investors and other lenders say their whereabouts are unknown and that the founders have not yet begun to cooperate with the liquidation process in any meaningful way.

At the moment, suspicions point to the fact that they would have moved to Dubai. So believes FatManTerra, the pseudonym of a cryptocurrency detective who became famous after the collapse of Terra, who points out that “it is very likely that they are there (in Dubai), although nobody is 100% sure, not even close associates”. As is known, the United Arab Emirates does not have an extradition treaty with the US, which is why they could have chosen this country as their destination.

Flowcarbon Suspended Token Release Due to Market Instability

Carbon-credit tokenization firm suffered a delay in the release of the new token. Flowcarbon allows tokens to get burned when carbon credits go away. Both Toucan Protocol Association and KlimaDAO have also stopped new activities.

Adam Neumann’s Flowcarbon is now on the obligation to stop its activities and rollouts of new items amid the current crypto declining market.

According to CEO and co-founder Dana Gibber, the entity that stores carbon credits on the blockchain is waiting for the crypto market to stabilize. Flowcarbon issues tokens when entities acquire carbon credits, which can get burned when an entity desires to retire the said credits.

Carbon credits have historically been a tool to offset pollution spread into the atmosphere by big entities. A project developer would collect funds by selling carbon tokens to a company wishing to offset its carbon emission.

One carbon credit represents one metric ton of carbon that will get prevented from entering the atmosphere. The carbon credit brings the right to claim an offset when an entity desires to retire a credit, forever making it disappear from the market.

On the other Hand, Tokenization Unleashes more Demand

Increased demand applies pressure on a supply-constrained market. This pressure represents pricing increases for credits. This situation ultimately means more profits for projects where they can intend to grow.

Projects with existing carbon credits can house their credits in Flowcarbon’s registry account, a database type. A one-to-one representation of every carbon credit gets minted into GC02 tokens owned by the entity with the carbon credits under its control.

The entity sends them to a so-called Goddess of Nature smart contract representing a “bundle,” an aggregation of carbon credits with similar criteria. The company then gets one Goddess of Nature token for each GC02 token. When a GNT token disappears or gets retired, one carbon credit goes away from the registry.

The New Token Launch Suffered a Delay

Flowcarbon desired to release a new token by the end of June, a strategy which got now postponed indefinitely, according to Gibber. Toucan and KlimaDAO have revealed a suspension of new activities following the highlight of a highly prominent carbon credit registry.

KlimaDAO and Toucan will be waiting for the outcome of Verra’s research. They have secured the designs while they wait for the crypto winter to go away.

According to the Founder, the Company Amassed At Least $10M this Last Year

Flowcarbon got created by WeWork founder Adam Neumann and his wife, Rebekah, and amassed at least $70 million in capital from presales of its items in May 2022 from Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst, amongst others. Rebekah Neumann said she is concerned about environmental issues and even managed to purchase forest areas near the equator.

She had challenged Neumann’s family office team to find extraordinary ways to acquire forests and generate profits. The final project was Flowcarbon. Neumann explained that the entity had already amassed at least $10 million in 2021. According to the workforce in the entity, Neumann isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations but remains in line with the company’s structure.

Uniswap Technical Analysis: Bulls Seek New Levels after Widespread Rise

There are 2 quite probable situations to operate in the short and medium term.

In the last 24 hours, a vast majority of cryptocurrencies have been in an uptrend following Bitcoin’s recovery above $21,000. However, Uniswap (UNI) has stood out among the altcoins for having recorded considerable gains, and if its technical picture is analyzed, there was a bullish momentum pattern for several days.

The price of UNI at this moment is exactly US$7.30 and registers a gain in the last 24 hours of 4.95%. It also accumulates gains in the last 7 days, being exactly 11.48%, according to data from CoinMarketcap.

Bottom Line: Will the Bull Run Continue?

In Uniswap technical analysis, the fundamental situation should also be assessed. And first of all, there is a recent development of great importance, and that is, that the Robinhood cryptocurrency exchange will add support for Uniswap. Therefore, it could be said that the rise of the native token, UNI, is supported.

On the other hand, as mentioned in KEY ALERTS, it is worth keeping an eye on the new hike by the FED that will take place for the second consecutive month, and that will probably be 75 basis points. This is because politicians opposed a larger measure.

Even though everyone is already bracing for a possible shake-up, this brought reassurance even to the crypto market and UNI traders. Because rumors that the hike in July would be 100 basis points were generating panic, this can be considered a relief.

Technical Analysis of Uniswap in Daily Timeframe

The first thing that can be seen is an inverted HCH pattern that warned of the rise. Additionally, there were consecutive rejections during the rise; two in the support zone at $3.53 and two more with the central EMA of ENVs.

It should be noted that the Bull Run supported by the news of Robinhood could mean a return to the resistance zone located at US$ 8.17. However, if a bit pessimistic interpretation of the market and the new FED hike is assumed, the bullish wedge formation can be seen, similar to what happened during March, when UNI prices were knocked down.

This leads us to consider that there may be a new crash in UNI, as happened the previous time. It is quite likely that this drop will be more than 40% based on historical data.

Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the breakout of this channel and the support zone located at US$4.65, especially since the RSI is at overbought levels, exactly 68 points. Also, the MACD histogram shows weakness in the trend.

It’s important to keep an eye on both sides of the picture, as it could deliver huge profits if investors trade futures, and take a close look at the context.

Fear & Greed Index Remains in Fear for at Least 72 Days

0

The Fear and Greed Index has achieved a new record for uninterrupted extreme fear. The negative perception has been active since BTC crashed from the $38,000 level on May 5.

While the Bitcoin market tries to generate the bottom of the current declining market, the Fear and Greed Index consistently remains in extreme fear. The index has been in a range of negative sentiment for a record 72 days.

The Crashdown of the digital asset market sentiment happened in May. At that time, Bitcoin lost backup at the $38,000 level and broke below the rising backup line. On May 12, it marked a low registered at $25,228 and started a consolidation above the support line.

However, it failed to hold, leading to an accelerated decadence in mid-June. The current low at $17,567 got generated on June 18. The consolidation is again going in line with the rising support line.

Fear and Greed Index Breaks the Fear Record

The day after the fall from the original support line on May 6, the Fear and Greed Index crumbled to a 22 level. This value belongs to the extreme fear in three of the 0-25 range. Since that day, the Fear and Greed Index remained in fear for 72 days.

This situation got observed yesterday by an expert called @PositiveCrypto, who revealed a long-term chart of Bitcoin color-coded according to Fear and Greed Index readings. In the past, focused on the data he gave, the index appeared twice in a negative fear sentiment.

The first time such a similar situation took effect was in the area of the absolute declining market bottom of 2018-2019 and lasted for at least 32 days. The second time it happened was during the COVID-19 outbreak of March-April 2020, and this time the Fear and Greed Index remained in the 0-25 range for at least 50 days.

According to the analyst, such a long-lasting extreme fear in the cryptocurrency market may be showing a potential trend reversal on its way.

On the one hand, the classic investor maxim appears to support this opinion. He said that people should be fearful when others are greedy, and people should

show greed when others are fearful.

On the other hand, the current macroeconomic situation, rising inflation and interest rates, the specter of recession, and the armed conflict in Ukraine keep generating a scenario unfavorable to high-risk assets such as digital currencies.

Is BTC an inflation hedge?

The suppressed price action made many market observers question Bitcoin’s frequently recognized properties as an inflation hedge. It isn’t behaving like one at the moment, having lost 70% in a year that has seen inflation surge to four-decade highs.

On July 13, the U.S. government highlighted that the consumer price index (CPI), a gauge of inflation, soared to 9.1%, beating expectations of 8.8% and marking the most prominent yearly high rate since 1981. Economist Alex Krüger described the CPI announcement as the “Crypto Pain Index” as Bitcoin crumbled to at least 4.36% in the hour after the announcement.

Vladimir Putin Approved a Policy to Prohibit Crypto Payments in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that bans crypto as a payment method in the nation. The law recognizes the Ruble as the only official payment way in the nation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially approved a bill banning the use of digital currencies as a means of payment in Russian territory.

This decision means that Russians cannot employ cryptocurrencies as payment “for transferred goods, performed works, or primary services. The law gives exchange operators the power not to carry out transactions that use digital financial assets for payments.

DFAs include all assets in the digital world, including digital currency. The policy also prohibits payments with utilitarian digital rights (UDR).

The chairman of the Financial Market Committee, Anatoly Aksakov, in the State Duma, the Russian parliament’s lower chamber, launched the law on June 7, and the parliament greenlighted it on July 8.

Before now, the country had no law prohibiting crypto assets as a method to pay. But it has banned monetary surrogates and considers the Ruble the only legal coin in the nation.

The law will become effective ten days after its release in the official gazette. However, the bill does not prohibit digital assets, which means there are other applications, including payments in international trades.

Russia is going through a series of extraordinary events, including the economic sanctions imposed by the world due to the current conflict in Ukraine. Some government officials support the proposal to permit crypto payments for trade with partners.

Russia Sends Mixed Impressions Regarding the Crypto World

Meanwhile, the nation still has a long way to go regarding regulating digital assets. In 2021, it activated a law called On Digital Financial Assets, introducing two legal terms: DFA and UDR.

Officials have explained that DFA is a name for crypto assets, and UDR refers to all other kinds of tokens.

Additionally, lawmakers in the nation will consider new laws on digital assets later this year. These laws got expected to bring more regulatory clarity to the scenario.

Despite all the regulation aperture, crypto remains one of the most prominent topics in Russia. The most significant countries across the globe, including the U.S., think the nation is avoiding financial punishment by using crypto as a method.

But specialists expressed that there are minimum chances for this to happen due to the public nature of the blockchain and because the Russian economy is just too big to handle it this way.

On its part, Russian authorities are starting to observe the true potential of digital assets and cryptocurrencies after initially considering a blanket prohibition on the said assets.

In January, Putin showed his support for Bitcoin mining and highlighted that the country counts on various advantages that would help to carry out a healthy crypto mining activity. One of these advantages is the surplus electricity and well-trained personnel.

The crypto activities in the eastern region have always been a subject of controversy. Such is the case of Ukraine, which had received donations in crypto to deal with the damages caused by Russia during the ongoing conflict.
