Indian Cryptocurrency Exchange WazirX Is under Investigation for Allegedly Laundering over USD 350 Million

The finance minister confirmed that WazirX is under investigation for FEMA violations as the ED looks into money laundering claims. The co-founders of the exchange reportedly moved to Dubai in April due to a new Indian cryptocurrency tax regime.

According to Pankaj Chaudhary, the Indian Finance Ministry, cryptocurrency exchange WazirX is under scrutiny for allegedly laundering money and violating foreign exchange rules.

The official stated the Enforcement Directorate examines claims that the laundering of Rs 2,790 crores, equivalent to over USD 350 million, occurred on WazirX.

The Enforcement Directorate Previously Called WazirX Executives for Questioning

WazirX, acquired by Binance in 2019, was reportedly among the exchanges under scrutiny for violating foreign exchange rules and money laundering guidelines.

In June and again in July, the economic agency summoned the top executives of Binance and WazirX for questioning.

The finance ministry stated that the ED investigates the platform in cryptocurrency cases under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) 1999 provisions.

The investigation has revealed that the Indian cryptocurrency exchange Wazirx was using the walled infrastructure of Binance. Besides, they found that the transactions between the two platforms mysteriously did not appear on the blockchains.

In response, Chaudhary discussed in Rajya Sabha, the Council of States, a Show Cause Notice (SCN) under FEMA provisions against WazirX. He stated that the exchange allowed the external repatriation of Rs 2,790 crores (over USD 350 million) worth of cryptocurrencies to unidentified wallets.

The Exchange Faces Escalating Problems in Another Case

The Indian finance minister also added that the platform allowed foreign users to exchange one crypto asset for another. He pointed out that they used transfers from other cryptocurrency exchanges like FTX and Binance.

That happened after Sushil Kumar Modi, a Rajya Sabha member, asked some questions about cryptocurrency exchanges. The latter wanted to know whether those platforms allowed users from countries like the US and Germany to trade without KYC and AML compliance. He also mentioned insufficient disclosure and agreements during transfers from third parties.

Nishal Shetty and Siddharth Menon, the co-founders of WazirX, reportedly moved to Dubai in April due to the new Indian cryptocurrency tax regime. The executives had previously distanced themselves from the daily operations of the platform.

After saying that, the finance minister reiterated the need for global collaboration to regulate cryptocurrencies. He considers that there must be an agreement between the proposals to control those assets in various countries.

Pankaj Chaudhary explained that any cryptocurrency policy framework could only be possible through significant international collaboration. That would involve the assessment of risk and benefit assessment and the evolution of common taxonomy and standards.

India has between 15 and 20 million cryptocurrency users, a significantly high number despite tight regulations. The authorities of the Asian country have exchanges under their sights to ensure compliance with KYC and AML.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 23,398 and has accumulated a 10.2% gain over the last week. Its daily trading volume is above USD 37.48 billion, while its market capitalization is about USD 447.16 billion, according to CoinGecko.

CBDC, Stablecoins, and Cryptocurrencies: Weekly Technical Analysis

CBDCs are often seen as an alternative or competitor to cryptocurrencies. Only BTC and XRP managed to end the first quarter of the year on a positive note.

Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence has issued the special report “Cryptos on the Rise”, which expands beyond cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

Considering the need to develop a regulatory framework, it investigates other cryptocurrency-related instruments such as central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and stablecoins, and highlights policy work in key countries.

Some Misconceptions Examined

The report examines some of the misconceptions that persist about cryptocurrencies, as well as the ramifications for financial stability and the future of money.

In this regard, while there are some structural similarities between crypto assets and central bank digital currencies, CBDCs are best described as the digital equivalent of a country’s fiat currency. The most advanced CBDC so far is China’s digital yuan.

Within the universe of cryptoactives, we also find stable coins or stablecoins, which are a liability of private entities that seek to maintain stability in their price (generally in relation to stable assets such as fiduciary currency).

The report defines a cryptoasset as “a type of digital asset that depends primarily on cryptography and distributed ledger or similar technology.” Such is the concept supported by the Financial Stability Board. In contrast, the Financial Action Task Force, using the term ‘virtual asset’, conceptualizes it as “a digital representation of value that can be digitally traded, or transferred, and can be used for payment or investment purposes”.

The latter definition is not limited to digital assets that depend on cryptography; instead, it encompasses Bitcoin and stablecoins.

In short, In the midst of a bear market declared in technical recession in July 2022, opting for a crypto investment now may be a bit risky, due to its high volatility.

However, many governments have already enacted laws or tax statutes, which can contribute to the regulation of prices in these assets that are currently considered high-risk investments.

The Devaluation of Bitcoin Causes MicroStrategy to Lose USD 918 Million in 2022 Q2

Saylor stated that separating the roles of President and CEO would allow buying and holding Bitcoin more efficiently. He has remained faithful to the pioneering cryptocurrency despite the low prices, insisting they will only pay off loans if it drops by USD 3,600.

Michael Saylor announced he would stop being the CEO of MicroStrategy while publishing the financial reports for the second quarter. The firm that the billionaire entrepreneur founded in 1989 is among the wallet providers with the highest amount of Bitcoin worldwide.

Michael Saylor Leaves His Position as the CEO of MicroStrategy

Saylor will now serve the business intelligence company as the president of the Board of Directors. Meanwhile, Phong Le, the current president and former CFO of MicroStrategy, will become the CEO.

Michael Saylor stated that separating the roles of president and CEO would allow them to work better. He thinks they could pursue their Bitcoin buying and holding strategies while growing their business more efficiently.

Phong Le was the CFO of MicroStrategy between August 2015 and July 2020 before becoming its president in May 2020. He will proceed in his functions as chief executive officer, taking the place of Michael Saylor.

He said he hoped to lead the company in the long-term growth and health of its trading software and Bitcoin acquisition strategies.

When Phong Le began his tenure as CFO, he reiterated that MicroStrategy remained committed to its Bitcoin HODLing approach.

The Financial Results of MicroStrategy for 2022 Q2

Since late July, MicroStrategy has held 129,699 bitcoins, equivalent to around USD 2 billion and an average of USD 3,664 per unit. When the price of BTC reached its all-time high in early November 2021, it was worth up to USD 8 billion.

In the second quarter of 2022, a USD 10 million BTC dump on June 29th caused MicroStrategy to bottom out. That situation indicated that the firm might go through a shortage of cash.

The latest sharp drop in the Bitcoin price has led MicroStrategy to a depletion in cryptocurrencies equivalent to USD 918 million. The company also lost USD 417 million worth of Bitcoin in the second quarter of last year.

Amid a recession in the industry, Saylor told MicroStrategy they would continue to HODL through adversity. He pointed out that the company has prepared to face volatility and restructure its balance sheet accordingly. The last earnings report on May 3rd also indicates that the company would look at the possible potential performance of Bitcoin more cautiously.

Saylor said that MicroStrategy is losing over USD 1.3 billion with its Bitcoin investment. The price of BTC is now below the Dollar-cost averaging (DCA), which is 25% of the value invested.

The CEO of MicroStrategy has remained faithful to the pioneering cryptocurrency despite the low prices. He has insisted that they will only pay off the loans his company produced between 2020 and 2021 if it drops by USD 3,600.

The measure taken by Saylor might appease the shareholders following the damage caused by his HODling technique. It is relevant to remember that he has served as CEO since the foundation of the company.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 23,398 and has accumulated a 10.2% gain over the last week. Its daily trading volume is above USD 37.48 billion, while its market capitalization is about USD 447.16 billion, according to CoinGecko.

There Might Soon Be a Sell-Off in the Crypto Market for these Reasons

Traders leave the crypto market or take short positions as the Chinese government plans to take military countermeasures. The rising tensions have led capital markets like stock and crypto assets to drop due to lower investor confidence.

The US-China tensions due to the upcoming visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan put the crypto market under pressure again. In addition, the USD 300-million Ponzi scheme of Forsage and the USD 200-million stunt of Nomad have caused prices to drop.

A recent smart-contract upgrade allowed cybercriminals to steal almost USD 200 million from the token bridge of Nomad. Besides, the SEC indicted eleven people running the Forsage Ponzi scheme, which raised more than USD 300 million from investors.

Both events have affected the crypto market, as traders began to withdraw money or take short positions amid increased volatility.

According to a local media outlet, the Chinese government plans to take countermeasures, including military ones. The anticipated conflicts and escalation have caused traders to leave the market or take short positions as volatility increases.

The Tension between the United States and China Grows

Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker, plans to meet with South Korean, Singaporean, Taiwanese, Malaysian, and Japanese leaders. During her recent visit, the authorities from Singapore highlighted that stable US-China relations would guarantee regional peace and security.

After the visit of Pelosi to Taiwan, the United States and China have become increasingly tense. The Chinese government told the military not to keep silent, but American and Taiwanese armed forces were near the border.

The rising tensions have led capital markets, which include stock and cryptocurrencies, to drop. For example, the market capitalization of crypto markets fell by 3% due to falling investor confidence.

The New York Government Fines Robinhood USD 30 Million

Cryptocurrency-trading platform Robinhood must pay a USD 30 million fine to the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).

According to the Wall Street Journal, the NYDFS found significant flaws in how Robinhood managed compliance plans.

The NYDFS said Robinhood had inadequate staff to comply with the Bank Secrecy and Anti-Money Laundering Act. In addition, the platform did not significantly upgrade its transaction monitoring method to adapt to developing size, trading volume, and consumer profile.

Robinhood also received an accusation of following policies inconsistent with the NYDFS cybersecurity and virtual currency rules. The regulator pointed out that the platform lacks a telephone contact line for consumer complaints, making consumer safety insufficient.

The NYDFS found these shortcomings thanks to a filing by Robinhood with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2021. The brokerage initially had to pay a USD 10 million fine, but that expectation rose to USD 30 million.

The latest agreement indicates that the NYDFS will begin enforcement action in the cryptocurrency sector. According to Adrienne A. Harris, the director of the NYDFS, they will continue to investigate and take action. She stated that combating the violation of departmental regulations is critical to protecting users and ensuring the security and robustness of their organization.

Solana Experiences Billionaire Hack: Funds Are Stolen from Users’ Wallets

0

The exact cause of the vulnerability is still unknown, causing panic in the Solana community.

Solana, a highly functional open source project that builds on the decentralized nature of Blockchain technology to provide decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions, suffered a multi-million dollar hack when horrified users noticed that their wallets had been emptied of all their funds.

The hacker successfully managed to steal around $6 million in a sweeping raid against users’ wallets.

The exact vector of the attack is unknown, and there is increasing speculation about the cause of the vulnerability.

Solana Hack: A Sudden Crisis

Solana ecosystem contributor @SolportTom was one of the first to raise the alarm about the exploit via Twitter, by posting that, “The transactions look like normal transfers, not transfers of a contract. This is throughout the ecosystem, people speculate that it has to do with a gambling service.”

While some users were quick to connect the hack to the Phantom wallet, the company quickly denied such claims.

“We are working closely with other teams to get to the bottom of a reported vulnerability in the Solana ecosystem,” said Phantom. “At this time, the team does not believe this is a Phantom-specific issue.”

Twitter user and crypto developer @0xfoobar had his own theory about the cause, linking the attack to widespread private key compromise. According to this source, both the Phantom and Slope wallets are affected, lending some credence to Phantom’s claims.

“The solution is to transfer assets to a wallet that has never exposed a private key to potentially vulnerable browser extensions,” said @0xfoobar. “That means hardware wallets, nothing else.”

@SolportTom added that, “Massive exploit/drain going on with Solana seeing it live in Taiyo tons of people losing their whole balance out of nowhere. Move everything to a ledger NOW.”

Send to a Cold Wallet and Revoke Access

In the absence of a firm explanation for the attack, Solana users have been advised to revoke access to everything and send all their crypto to a hardware wallet.

To eliminate the significant online attack vector, many opt to keep their keys offline at all times with cold wallets, which, unlike hot wallets, don’t connect to the Internet.

Previously, some cryptocurrency holders would keep a paper wallet: a printed piece of paper containing the wallet’s private key, usually in the form of a QR code. However, this is now seen as an outdated, risky security method.

Therefore, the best option for cold storage is definitely a hardware wallet, which aim to provide a better user experience while adopting a similar principle of keeping the private key offline. These are more portable, cheaper than a full PC, and custom-made for cryptocurrency storage.

For users without a hardware wallet, sending all funds to a centralized custodial exchange is an acceptable temporary solution. It does not provide full control of the user’s private keys. A third party (such as an exchange or custodial wallet service provider) will store the assets for the user. The crypto will only be as safe as the custodian keeps it. That’s why it’s important to choose a reliable exchange or service provider.

The Tension between China, the United States and Taiwan Causes Bitcoin to Drop

The price of Bitcoin has dropped by 2.5% this week due to the nervousness of the markets. Nancy Pelosi will be the first senior US official to visit Taiwan in more than 25 years.

The Bitcoin (BTC) price has kept dropping due to the tension between China and the United States that shook the markets. Nancy Pelosi, the 52nd Speaker of the US House of Representatives, will be the first to visit Taiwan in over 25 years.

Beijing has reportedly warned Pelosi and the US administration not to go to Taiwan, which it considers part of its territory. In addition, Chinese officials have threatened to take unspecified military countermeasures if her visit continues, as they regard this as a fugitive place.

Zhao Lijian, the Foreign Ministry of China, warned about negative consequences if she insisted on the visit. The official stated they were ready for any eventuality, as the People’s Liberation Army will never remain idle. He said China would take firm measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Investors may have dumped riskier assets, like Bitcoin, due to the tension until they have more certainty about this scenario. Chen Zhao, the chief strategist at Alpine Macro, said Beijing’s actions might trigger further sanctions against China. That would dramatically increase the risk of a direct military conflict between the United States and China.

Faced with that, he recommends that investors think about how to hedge their portfolios against the risk of a US-China military confrontation.

US-China Conflict Leads Bitcoin Traders to Lose their Risk Appetite

The visit of Pelosi to Taiwan triggered the conflict between China and the United States. That situation reduced the risk appetite among investors after the expected 75-point interest rate hike in the American nation. That increased the demand for cryptocurrencies and stocks, whose prices increased over the last week.

Bitcoin has reached the low of USD 22,700, a depreciation of 2.5% since the beginning of the week. The drop in the price of the leading cryptocurrency and other risk assets might continue along with the nervousness of the markets.

Market technician Katie Stockton, the founder of Fairlead Strategies, said that medium- and long-term momentum indicators still point lower. That increases the risk of another significant downward draft in the next few months.

She argued that further short-term loss of momentum would lead BTC to retest USD 18,300-USD 19,500. However, if a potential decline does not stop there, she estimates the secondary support of Bitcoin is nearly USD 13,900.

Markus Thielen, the chief investment officer at IDEG Asset Management, expressed his position on Ether (ETH). He speculates that the price might drop to USD 1,500 when Nancy Pelosi arrives in Taiwan.

In addition, he said that there are fewer Google searches for the Ethereum merger. He thinks the flow of optimistic news is taking a back seat, focusing on the US-China tension. Therefore, there is further ambivalence between bearish and bullish projections for the Bitcoin-led crypto market.
