Scrutinizing All US-Based Cryptocurrency Exchanges Is among the Objectives of the SEC

The SEC plans to investigate all the cryptocurrency exchanges operating in the United States besides Coinbase and Binance. As proposed in two recently introduced bills, the CFTC may have more jurisdiction over crypto asset regulation.

The cryptocurrency exchanges operating in the United States will not escape regulation, according to the staff of Senator Cynthia Lummis.

Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the country, is under the scrutiny of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The federal agency also plans to investigate Binance, the crypto asset marketplace with the highest trading volume.

Concerning Binance, it has even had to operate a separate division for US customers, seeking to appease the SEC. Coinbase has also struggled to prevent being subject to tighter regulations by the federal agency.

Regardless of the efforts of both exchanges, the SEC considers this is not enough. However, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a more crypto-friendly regulator, might use an approach not based on enforcement and lawsuits.

According to Forbes, the staff of the SEC investigates all cryptocurrency exchanges operating in the United States at various levels.

The SEC Does Not Consider Cryptocurrencies Securities Yet

The SEC is operating beyond its jurisdiction, as it has not yet officially classified cryptocurrencies as securities.

In July, Republican Senator Tom Emmer talked about the federal agency and its anti-cryptocurrency chairperson, Gary Gensler. He said they want to expand their crypto enforcement division by unconstitutionally expanding their jurisdiction.

However, an anonymous official said the SEC still needed to settle its dispute with the CFTC over jurisdiction over the crypto market. He explained that lawmakers would have to interfere and that Congress might support the CFTC if they did not solve the issue internally.

The CEFT might have more jurisdiction over cryptocurrencies, as stated in two recently introduced bills. However, an anonymous official said the probabilities of Congress passing it this year were below 50%.

The introduction of the Lummis-Gillibrand bill in June preceded the recently announced Digital Commodities Consumer Protection Act.

The SEC Expresses Its Position against Crypto Assets

A cryptocurrency exchange executive believes many US-based platforms have received SEC Wells Notices. The federal agency uses them to inform companies when they will take action against them. The anonymous executive highlighted that these measures go against the standard procedures of the SEC.

Over the last week, the SEC caused Binance to delist the AMP token, which the former deems a security. That has affected those investors putting their money in that crypto asset.

Regulatory agencies will continue fighting for regulatory control over cryptocurrencies in the United States. However, that might not conclude soon, thus prolonging the uncertainty for the exchanges struggling to comply.

Cryptocurrencies have become crucial in the economic system, which regulators do not overlook. The SEC is only one example of what happens in many countries, where the authorities seek to control or ban those assets.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 23,119 and has accumulated a 2.4% loss over the last week. While its trading volume is above USD 26.62 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 441.87 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Retail Investors Know Cryptocurrencies Better than Stocks and Bonds

According to a new study, more traditional financial products like stocks and bonds are seen by retail investors as more complicated than cryptocurrencies.

According to a World Economic Forum (WEF) survey, 29% of investors reported that they did not understand cryptocurrencies, while nearly 40% said the same about stocks and bonds.

The privately funded survey, conducted in collaboration with BNY Mellon and Accenture, included more than 9,000 people in nine countries.

The study revealed a growing generation gap, as 70% of retail investors are currently under the age of 45. Although most of the respondents said they were looking to build long-term wealth, another 40% of them had not yet invested because they did not know how to, or found it too confusing.

Impact of Retail Investors

“With the global adoption and trading volumes of cryptocurrencies increasing substantially in recent years, there is a lot of buzz about it, which is likely to influence investors’ product awareness,” said Meagan Andrews, Investment Leader at WEF:

“Less coverage by more traditional products like stocks and bonds can also have the opposite effect on awareness.”

In addition, retail investors in the countries surveyed that are considered emerging markets (i.e. Brazil, China, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates) reported they feel more confident in their ability to understand markets and build generational wealth through the financial markets.

The survey reveals that retail investors are moving markets, influencing institutional investors, and having macro effects: “From 2021’s meme stock saga to the rise of cryptocurrency, they are making their influence felt throughout the capital markets ecosystem.”

Based on the study results, retail investors have been able to take greater control of their investments due to several factors, such as the following:

Economic environment: most markets showed a relatively consistent bull run over the past decade. Meanwhile, central banks gradually lowered interest rates, further encouraging people to turn to the markets to invest their money, rather than save it.

Technology advancements: more individuals had gradually been granted access to retail investment services and products, as a result of the rise of online trading platforms. Nowadays, low- or no-fee trades are offered by many online brokerages globally.

COVID-19 impact: the pandemic unique circumstances allowed more individuals the freedom and spare time to learn how to invest. In addition, some governments provided financial stimuli, thus allowing people to gain more discretionary funds to invest.

Decreasing defined benefit pensions: this made individuals more responsible for their retirement savings, thus interacting with the capital markets through employer-sponsored retirement accounts, rather than through traditional state-owned pension plans.

Taking into account other sources of information, according to a report by VandaTrack, crypto-related stocks saw inflows of nearly $1 billion recently, due to the return of retail investors.

Last month, Marathon Digital Holdings, Coinbase Global, and Riot Blockchain were among the top assets bought by Fidelity.

Cryptocurrency-Based ETFs and Indices

The NYSE FactSet Global Blockchain Technologies Index was headed for its biggest monthly gain since February 2021, while the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index, which tracks the largest digital assets including Bitcoin, had risen about 35% since the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, half of the 20 best-performing US exchange-traded funds (ETFs) since the end of June, were crypto-related. Ed Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda Corp, said, “Retail traders are definitely surfacing here.”

According to Analysts, a Hybrid of CeFi and DeFi Can Befit Cryptocurrency Users More

The transparency of decentralized platforms is something that can benefit CeFi. Analysts consider that the best solution may be to merge them into CeDeFi.

The adoption of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology has continued to grow despite the prolonged collapse in the industry. The market has over 300 million users and holders of cryptocurrencies worldwide, while over 18,000 companies accept them for their products or services.

Analysts consider the profitability of cryptocurrencies as one of the main drivers of mass adoption. Users are aware that keeping their holding in the long term is just one strategy, far from being the most profitable.

Investors can grow their digital wealth by lending their assets, borrowing money against crypto collateral, or engaging in yield farming.

Returns are the main driver of the crypto economy as it helps users maintain financial stability amid bearish markets. However, experts indicate critical flaws in the wealth management models of yield farming.

CeFi and DeFi Compared regarding Security, Flexibility, and Volatility

CeFi is reportedly safer and more reliable, but DeFi offers the possibility of higher profits despite high risks and volatility.

When holders stake their cryptocurrencies on CeFi platforms, borrowers receive it as a loan with fixed repayment rates. That creates an excellent financial cycle that contributes to the stability of the model.

On the other hand, DeFi platforms use variable rates, which may vary depending on the liquidity pool or the issuance rate of the token.

The Estimation of Risks Allows Increasing Liquidity

An increasing number of lenders flock to a platform as it gains popularity, hoping for higher returns. That causes the liquidity in the liquidity pools to increase and the premiums to decrease.

On a CeFi platform, fixed interest rates allow maintaining liquidity by sacrificing capital or limiting the deposit amount for lenders. Besides, the complexity and volatility of DeFi make it harder to integrate new users.

However, drawbacks in the CeFi model show the need for an upgrade, explained in the following lines.

It Is Necessary to Reboot Centralized Finance to Benefit Users

CeFi platforms may maintain a fixed interest rate by spreading their capital across different types of assets. That involves DeFi protocols, liquid assets (stablecoins), and long-term crypto institutional loans (3ACs).

However, centralized platforms risk losing much of their capital and compromising user funds and wallets. In addition, there is the issue of trust as a centralized platform trades assets through a third party, which retains control over them. On a DeFi platform, investors are the only ones controlling private keys and wallets.

CeFi offers many opportunities for sustainable investments in cryptocurrencies. Its high-interest fixed model allows considerable returns, impossible with DeFi, and keeps financial stability.

However, the above issues may pose significant risks to user assets. The transparency of decentralized platforms can benefit CeFi if it adopts it. The best solution would be to combine both platform types into CeDeFi to help those trading cryptocurrencies better.

The Central Bank of Thailand Might Start Testing Its CBDC in December

0

The financial institution considers it necessary to test the retail CBDC with the collaboration of the private sector. However, they have not rushed to implement it, saying there are enough alternative payment options.

The Central Bank of Thailand recently announced it would start testing its CBDC late in the year. The institution stated that the process would occur from the end of 2022 to mid-2023. It also said it recognizes the importance of CBDCs as a new financial infrastructure.

For that reason, the central bank believes it must test the retail CBDC with the collaboration of the private sector. That significant step indicates that the Asian nation is eager to benefit from the technology behind digital assets.

According to the central bank, the pilot test will focus on two priorities: the Foundation track and the Innovation track. The former focuses on the efficiency and security of the technology supporting the CBDC. The activities in this category will be payments for goods and services, involving 10,000 retail users and three companies selected.

Thailand Seems to Be Increasingly Close to Cryptocurrencies

In April 2022, some discussions about new cryptocurrency regulations led to stifling this market in Thailand. The growing regulatory activity has prompted the oldest bank to block its acquisition of a stock exchange.

The Central Bank of Thailand has decided not to rush the implementation of its CBDC. While the head of the institution said there were enough alternative payment options, regulators postponed taxes on crypto transactions until 2024.

Experiments with CBDCs Have Become a Priority in Leading Countries

Besides regulating cryptocurrencies, governments and regulators have seen CBDCs as the most crucial issue. Most leading countries are working on their central bank digital currencies and have started running pilot tests.

The benefits of technology are evident to many governments that want to use it for national and international transactions. Most countries agree with allowing cryptocurrencies to co-exist with digital versions of fiat currencies.

Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc. Posts a USD 1.5 Billion Profit in 2022 Q2

Digital payments company Block Inc, the financial service owned by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, published its second-quarter results. Although the profits rose by 29% to USD 1.47 billion, the Bitcoin revenue of the firm slumped.

The Bitcoin revenue of the company in the second quarter of 2022 was USD 1.79 billion. Although it represents a 34% drop, they consider that their gross profit was just USD 41 million.

The firm stated that it saw a decline in consumer demand and the Bitcoin price due to uncertainty about crypto assets. They added that their BTC holdings suffered a USD 36 million loss in value, which did not affect their performance.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is trading at around 23,000 and has accumulated a 5% gain over the last week. While its trading volume is above USD 35.58 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 350.45 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Bitcoin Price Hits $23,400 With 4.6% Gain amid “Very Mixed” Outlook

Bitcoin (BTC) rallied overnight on August 5 as a further rally from the trend line opened the door for further gains.

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed that BTC/USD bounced off a local bottom at $22,400 to add around 4.6%.

The pair had reversed direction just at key supply support on major exchange Binance, helping to stave off a more substantial loss from the 200-week moving average (MA) at around $22,800.

While that key zone remained uncertain for the bulls, a rebound from the 21-period moving average on the daily chart gave on-chain resource material indicators cause for optimism.

BTC Price Daily Chart Sets ‘Tentative’ Long Signal

Material Indicators, FireCharts cofounders, posted a Twit saying that, “On the #Bitcoin Daily chart, the Trend Precognition A1 algorithm is indicating a momentum shift from the Monday drawdown. If bulls can jump over the 21-DMA, we’ll get to see if the bear market rally has another pump in it.”

They further added that, “Helps if I post the chart with it. It was worth the wait. #BTC reclaimed the 21-DMA and the Trend Precognition A2+ aglo started flashing a new signal. It’s tentative until the D close.”

Trader and analyst Rekt Capital, however, expressed caution about Bitcoin’s poor track record in turning the 200-week moving average into strong support for this bear market.

“Historically, BTC has been able to generate tremendous buying interest at the 200-week MA,” he argued.

“But if $BTC doesn’t retest the MA anytime soon, that will likely serve as further evidence that this rally is merely one of relief.”

Equally conservative in its pricing outlook was trading firm QCP Capital, which in its latest market update sent Telegram channel subscribers that the overall picture was “very mixed.”

“Economic data globally points to poor growth and a coming global recession,” the update reads, highlighting upcoming July Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data to be released on August 10.

Ethereum Force Fails To Convince

Regarding altcoins, Ether (ETH) and other large-cap tokens joined Bitcoin’s easing push to the upside.

Most recently, ETH/USD was hovering around $1.665, and ETH/BTC; however, it failed to break resistance closer to the 0.075 mark after a second test.

With the Ethereum merger scheduled to take place on September 19, concerns were also rising about the likelihood of a contentious hard fork of the network.

“The most pressing and immediate risk in the crypto markets is the ETH meltdown that is scheduled for September,” QCP Capital further explained.

The firm added that markets had already “started to price in the possibility of a material fork.”

It is worth remembering Vitalik Buterin’s last July announcements in regards to Ethereum. Butelik explained that after The Merge, 4 other important milestones will come:

The Surge: planned for 2023, plans to introduce sharding in Ethereum that divides the Blockchain into smaller partitions (known as “shards”) in order to increase the scalability of the network.

The Verge: having no estimated implementation date, foresees “a powerful update of the Merkle tests”.

The Purge: will reduce the hard disk space required for validators.

The Splurge: consists of a series of small updates that will ensure that the network runs smoothly after the previous four stages.

However, none of this will happen if the Merge does not happen first.

Investors Groping in Cryptocurrencies: 40% Believe they Are Regulated

0

29.6% consider that they have the same risks as any other asset, according to a study by the CNMV. Advertising warnings make half of the investors reflect on their position.

Investment in cryptocurrencies is an undeniable fact, to which regulators have found it necessary to respond, so far, however, with little incidence.

In Spain, to cite an example, so far only the regulations governing their advertising have been developed so that advertisers clearly warn private investors of the risks. Nevertheless, the community regulations that address the treatment of crypto assets and offer their investors the guarantees that do apply to other types of investment assets, are still pending.

Results of the CNMV Study

Pending this regulation, the CNMV (The National Securities Market Commission, located in Spain) is concentrating its efforts on warning of the risks, with a discreet result for the moment, according to the study published today by the regulator on cryptocurrencies and the effectiveness of the measures promoted so far.

The penetration of these assets among investors is still low. According to the survey commissioned by the CNMV for the preparation of the study, only 6.8% of those interviewed have ever invested in cryptocurrencies.

In addition, only 9% of them dedicate a fixed monthly allocation to this type of asset, which represents, in any case, less than 5% of their capital. Of the current investors, just over half, 52% do so occasionally when there are falls in the value of this currency or they have money to invest.

The study reveals a striking fact, as recognized by the CNMV. Thus, 40% of investors in cryptocurrencies believe that they are regulated by law and 29% consider that they have the same risks as any other investment.

These are significant percentages, which show the lack of knowledge that still exists among the investment community in crypto assets, more familiar with this type of asset than the general population, and which can therefore be the focus of unexpected losses.

Warning about Risks when Investing in Cryptocurrencies

According to the study, the didactic work of the regulators, which has joined the efforts of the CNMV, the Bank of Spain and the Government itself, to warn about the risks of investing in cryptocurrencies is already giving some results, although also with limitations.

Advertising warnings about the risks have been effective in giving at least half of investors pause. 32.4% of cryptocurrency investors do admit to having searched the internet for more information about cryptocurrencies and their risks after seeing the warnings contained in the advertisements. However, 49.3% acknowledge that they do not react in any special way after learning about the warnings.

Three Reasons Reported to Invest in Cryptocurrencies

Among the most frequent reasons chosen to invest in cryptocurrencies, the search for high profitability stands out, followed by the consideration of these as a means of payment for the future and that the technology on which they are created is trusted. This third reason is significantly higher among young people under 24 years of age, according to the CNMV.

Even so, 61.3% of cryptocurrency investors recognize that they have a high speculative degree, while 17.3% fully agree that the liquidity of cryptocurrencies is scarce, so it is sometimes not possible to sell at the desired time and significant losses can be suffered.
