The Forensic Intelligence Unit Helps the Australian Federal Police Stop Cryptocurrency-Related Crimes

0

Stefan Jerga said the new unit must disrupt organized criminal syndicates through forensic intelligence to stop fraud before it occurs. He commented that fraud like money laundering robs the government of resources necessary to serve its citizens.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched a new unit to fight money laundering through cryptocurrencies, making crypto fraud more difficult.

Stefan Jerga, the National Head of Criminal Forfeiture for the AFP, said they formed the new task force to face illegal cryptocurrency use. He pointed out that the unit has already stopped more than USD 600 million in illicit profits.

The team provides invaluable traceability services to other AFP divisions in addition to seizing assets. They can do it thanks to their ability to examine transactions across multiple blockchains.

An executive from AUSTRAC proposed the idea for the new unit, noting that the ability of cryptocurrencies to cross international borders seamlessly attracted criminals. He explained that crypto assets have become increasingly relevant in the financial systems, leading malicious actors to take advantage of them.

Jerga Thinks Australian Crypto Fraud Has Escalated

After AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw formed it, the unit seized luxury goods, like cars and cryptocurrencies, worth USD 35 million.

According to Jerga, the escalation in crypto-related crime since the first AFP seizure warranted a new team of specialists seeking to gain additional skills. The AFP claimed that cryptocurrency frauds had grown during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required further direct law enforcement.

Jerga considers that the responsibility of the new unit is to disrupt organized criminal syndicates through the forensic intelligence unit. He pointed out that the team would seek to stop fraud before it occurs rather than recover lost profits.

Ian McCartney, the AFP Deputy Commissioner for Investigations, stated that cybercriminals hate police squads that can disrupt their activity.

In addition, he also commented that fraud like money laundering robs the Australian government of resources necessary to serve its people. In 2015, a task force called the Serious Financial Crimes Task Force emerged to prevent this multi-million dollar loss of revenue. The funds they recover from fraud go to a government account for use in community projects.

The FBI and the DoJ Take Counterterrorism Actions to Fight Cybercrime

In February, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the upcoming launch of the Virtual Assets Exploitation Unit to disrupt crime syndicates. That happened after Chainalysis reported in 2021 that almost USD 11 billion worth of cryptocurrencies had questionable sources.

The FBI wants to exploit its tools to detect cybercrime before it occurs, similarly to counterterrorism methods employed after 9/11. The Virtual Assets Exploitation Unit emerged with the idea of working with a team of prosecutors from the US Department of Justice (DoJ).

The relevance of crypto assets in the economic system is increasingly evident, which cybercriminals do not overlook. That has led regulators in various countries to take measures to prevent those malicious actors from committing fraud.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is trading at around USD 19,963 and has accumulated a 1.0% gain over the last week. While its daily trading volume is above USD 29.72 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 382.15 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Former Brazilian Economy Minister Becomes Advisor of Binance

By hiring Meirelles, Binance shows that it takes compliance with regulators more seriously after public and legal scrutiny. The executive said the firm provided the information recently requested by the authorities, pointing out that many people already have access to it.

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, recently hired renowned Brazilian economist Henrique Meirelles as an advisor.

Meirelles served as President of the Central Bank of Brazil between 2003 and 2011 and as Minister of Economy between 2016 and 2018.

After appointing Henrique Meirelles to its global advisory board, the firm will provide further details on the initiative in the short term.

Binance Seeks to Comply with Regulations Following Legal Scrutiny

By hiring a famous former government official, Binance shows that it takes compliance with regulators worldwide more seriously. This decision follows the public and legal scrutiny it has faced more than ever.

The cryptocurrency exchange is discussing the creation of a digital city modeled on the virtual free zones of Dubai with Nigeria. It would become the first in West Africa to provide a legal framework and tax incentives compatible with cryptocurrencies.

More than 22 million people own cryptocurrencies in Nigeria, making it a promising market for the industry.

The US federal prosecutors recently requested Changpeng Zhao to submit information concerning money laundering data and communications from the platform. The latter included messages between the CEO of Binance and other executives in 2020.

This request was part of an investigation to determine whether Binance complies with US financial crime laws by the Department of Justice.

The executive said the firm provided the information requested by the authorities, pointing out that many people have access to the messages anyway.

Changpeng Zhao Explains that Binance is Not a Chinese Company

On September 1st, Changpeng Zhao reacted to an article describing Binance as a Chinese-origin cryptocurrency exchange. He wondered why they said that, highlighting that he has been a Canadian citizen for over 30 years.

Then Zhao shared his thoughts on why those comments are racist, defamatory, and harmful. He quashed rumors that an early employee of Binance, who was also his friend, was a Chinese owner or official.

Changpeng Zhao said it was easier to have a Chinese citizen as a legal representative due to the restrictive laws on foreigners in China. Guangying Chen ran the administrative office for the cryptocurrency exchange, a common practice in the Asian country. Finally, he clarified that she did not own Binance and was not a secret agent of the Chinese government.

The CEO of Binance explained that Guangying had to leave China in 2017, which was a tremendous sacrifice. She still has to deal with conspiracy theories about her that some Chinese media outlets continue to spread.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is trading at around USD 19,963 and has accumulated a 1.0% gain over the last week. While its daily trading volume is above USD 29.72 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 382.15 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Peruvian Cosmetic Brands Land in the Metaverse

0

Peru is one of the countries in Latin America that has experienced a “boom” in the adoption of cryptocurrencies.

Peruvian fashion and cosmetics companies have landed in the metaverse, including non-fungible tokens (NFT), games, and other types of immersive experiences for their users and potential customers from all over the world, through dynamics that allow them to get to know Peru digitally.

According to the newspaper El Comercio from Peru, companies like Cyzone and Valdé Beauty have landed in the metaverse. The second landed in Decentraland (MANA), where it managed to attract 400 customers, while the first also moved its brand name fragrance brand into the metaverse.

Some Reactions to Peruvian Crypto Boom

Peru has positioned itself in the crypto ecosystem. Days ago, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) stated that 3.7% of the Peruvian population already owns digital assets. This conclusion places Peru in the top 20 countries with the highest adoption of digital money.

“One could say that the investments are more from men than women, but when we did a study last year, the number was lower, it was around 14%, and today this figure has doubled. More and more women are investing in these types of assets.”

Meanwhile, the Peruvian designer Stephanie Wong explained the following to El Comercio:

“Bringing a scent into the digital world is not possible until now, so what we did was replace this olfactory part with experiences and association of feelings within the metaverse. We created a kind of world in which the user can travel different paths, according to their preferences.”

Sherlock Communications Report Highlights

In April, the latest Sherlock Communications report on the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Latin America revealed that in Peru it grew 1,100% in the first months of this year, where from 1 to 12% of Peruvians accepted that they would buy crypto assets in the remainder of the year.

In the survey, 27% of the Peruvian respondents pointed out that they would seek to “better understand” how the technology around cryptocurrencies works and wait for greater regulation to invest, and 37% of the respondents would expect to find out more from the media to learn more about the cryptocurrency market.

Statista Global Survey about Cryptocurrency in LATAM

In addition, the latest Statista global survey highlighted that 16% of cryptocurrency users in the region are in Peru, a country that has been growing in its adoption despite government criticism.

Until the fourth month of the year, Peru had obtained a 600% growth in the use of cryptocurrencies in the country in 2021. This was motivated by people’s interest in new investment mechanisms, in the face of the high inflation rates that are taking place in the country.

It should be noted that the growth of cryptocurrencies in South America is something that has been reported in recent months. The adoption of crypto payment methods in countries like Argentina and Venezuela, the growing interest in Chile and Ecuador, and the appearance of crypto ATMs in Colombia and Uruguay, are some examples of how these assets are becoming part of the economy in the region.

Terra Classic (LUNC): Symbol of the Future or Simple Hype?

0

LUNC’s price and market cap have more than doubled in recent weeks.

While the crypto sphere has slumped since the Fed announcements and is struggling to recover, the LUNC token, formerly called LUNA, no longer appears to be experiencing the crisis. After sinking lower than the earth, the token has risen sharply ever since.

While there is interest in the LUNC token and the court cases related to Do Kwon, the price of the token was looking worse and dying: it was the end of its life.

A Dead Token, Really?

However, the community seems to have woken up and tells everyone that when it is strong and united, changes are possible. And although unforeseen, in the case of the Terra Classic token, some investors now expect to receive more profits.

Looking at various aspects, one might be tempted to believe that the token is rising from the ashes, seeking to prove that it has several lives under its belt.

The price of the token has been on the rise for several weeks, with daily and weekly closings in the green and against what the cryptocurrency market is currently doing. Since mid-August, LUNC has seen its price increase by more than 100%, while its market capitalization has done the same.

In fact, the market capitalization doubled in parallel at the end of August and also exceeded one billion dollars, surpassing in the space of one night the two billion market capitalization: a level that had not been reached for a long time.

The bottom of the market capitalization for the digital asset was reached on June 8, with a value of 300 million dollars.

Therefore, the market capitalization has multiplied by 7 in less than three months, while the cryptocurrency market as a whole has lost capitalization during the same date.

LUNC Staking, A Successful First Step?

First, let’s get back to the heart of symbolic news. On August 26, 2022, the staking of the Terra Classic Blockchain was generally reopened with apparently amazing returns (+1% per day), but above all with many validators who promised to optimize the burning of tokens that would be delegated to the users from the fees charged by them.

The staking, available on the Terra Station Wallet, is currently a process that seems to be unanimous and sees the number of tokens deposited on the Terra Classic Blockchain increasing day by day.

After 5 days, the staking rate was 6.63% compared to the entire LUNC supply, i.e. over 457 billion tokens staking through the Terra Station Wallet. Now it’s close to 7%.

Terra Classic vs Luna, Which Has a Better Future?

At the same time, the activity that remains within the Terra Classic Blockchain can be demonstrated in various ways.

Beyond the daily trading volume that remains at interesting levels, the creation of new wallets is very important, with more than 266,000 new wallets created in the last 30 days, while the token did not seem to interest more people.

If the two Blockchains are compared, the one linked to LUNA 2.0 seems rather the one that is approaching the end of its life and the break-even point. Since the launch at the end of May, prices have continued to fall, while the market capitalization struggles to stay at $200 million, also in free fall.

Especially since this token has been consistently frowned upon by the community since its inception. On the contrary, all investors, and even Binance’s CZ, were expecting a massive LUNC token burn rather than a 2.0 release.

The Colombian auction house Lefebre announced that for the month of September 2022 it will include NFT art within its lots to be auctioned. These are pieces of jewelry that have exclusive designs and were created by the princess of the United Arab Emirates, Shikha Fatima Al-Qas.

Emeralds to be auctioned

According to information reported by La República, the pieces of jewelry that will be auctioned will be delivered with their own Blockchain certificate, which offers the end customer information about the origin of the minerals, the artists involved in the creation process, and the authenticity of each piece.

Shikha Princess Fatima Al-Qas will be presently auctioning the limited editions of jewelry that were made with emeralds extracted from Colombia.

The designer, a member of the Ras al-Khaimah royal family of the United Arab Emirates, is accompanied by artists from the modern and contemporary art department such as Omar Rayo, Ana Mercedes Hoyos, Olga de Amaral, Carlos Rojas, Roberto Pizano, Miguel Ángel Rojas, Luis Caballero, Manuel Hernández, Hugo Zapata, Edgar Negret, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, among others.

According to Catalina Martínez, director of Lefebre Auctions, these pieces are made with emeralds extracted from a mine in Boyacá with completely clean processes.

“[…] Through the Blockchain it is possible to create a direct bridge between art and technology, highlighting the artistic level that is evident in each jewel, turning its creations into a unique visual attraction with an exclusivity bonus backed by an NFT.”

As a fact to keep in mind, the jewels to be auctioned from Fatima’s collection will be the singular earrings with a starting value of 9 million pesos, and the matrix ring with a base value of 13 million pesos.

Details of the Jewels to be auctioned

  1. Singular Earrings: Exceptional and unique pair of earrings with a triangular design; Forged from five grams of 18K yellow gold with a frame made to house 70 natural Colombian emerald beads, without treatment and a total weight of 2 ct, originating from the Chivor mine.
  2. The piece is carefully adorned with nine 2mm old cut diamonds weighing approximately 1ct in total.

In this auction pieces from four departments are presented: Jewelry, coins, and books; old paintings; Decorative arts and furniture; and modern and contemporary art. Mid-Century and antique furniture, beautiful lighting pieces, glassware, and tableware from England and Germany are found in the Decorative Arts and Furniture department.

Brad Sherman Says the Money and Power behind Cryptocurrencies Will Prevent Congress from Banning them Soon

Kristin Smith thinks the industry has realized it needs to engage constructively in Washington, where partisan policymakers should also participate. While Sherman believes the SEC should regulate cryptocurrencies, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis introduced legislation to treat them as commodities.

Californian Congressman Brad Sherman, a cryptocurrency skeptic, said the money and power behind the industry would prevent them from banning them now.

The Democratic Representative explained that they had not banned crypto because the money for lobbying and campaign contributions worked. He pointed out that they had not done it before as they did not realize its importance.

Sherman has consistently expressed concern about crypto assets to investors and the broader financial system, hoping that Congress can ban them. He commented last year that patriotic anarchists applauding tax evasion backed cryptocurrencies politically, which he hoped they would shut down.

Crypto Lobby Gets in Touch with Washington

In 2021, a local report revealed that the cryptocurrency industry would spend 2022 lobbying for legislative clarity in Congress.

Kristin Smith, the executive director of the Blockchain Association, thinks the industry has realized it needs to engage constructively in Washington. However, the crypto lobby also has to include partisan policymakers.

The position of Congressman Sherman contrasts with what Congressman Tom Emmer pushed in the bipartisan Blockchain Caucus. In December, he observed that cryptocurrency policy is not becoming partisan despite looking otherwise.

The Republican Representative stated that education is crucial to orange pilling, and the latest FSC crypto hearing reaffirmed that crypto is still non-partisan.

Divided Policymakers Stand in the Way of Bipartisan Cryptocurrency Policy

The contradictory position of policymakers is evident in how they want to see the regulation of the crypto sector. Representative Sherman considers that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) should regulate cryptocurrencies thanks to its experience. Meanwhile, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis introduced bipartisan legislation to treat those assets as commodities in June under the CFTC.

Congressman Sherman also views cryptocurrencies as a Ponzi scheme, arguing it is hard to run the investor protection subcommittee as people want to gamble. He said that crypto assets are meme coins investors buy, hoping to sell them to someone else before they run out.

The US House Oversight Committee Subcommittee on Consumer and Economic Policy also consulted regulators on how they would combat cryptocurrency fraud in the industry.

Sherman, who also chairs the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Investor Protection, will join the 2022 Crypto Policy Symposium.

The relevance of cryptocurrencies in the economic system has become increasingly evident among legislators in various countries. Many policymakers have made efforts to introduce new bills to regulate the industry, alleging that crypto assets pose risks to investors.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is trading at around USD 19,778 and has accumulated a 0.6% gain over the last week. While its daily trading volume is above USD 23.62 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 378.59 billion, according to CoinGecko.
