European Parliament Approves MiCA Law

0

After two successive postponements, the European Parliament has held the final vote on the Markets in Cryptoassets Act, known as MiCA. Now the legislation, first introduced in 2020, needs the approval of the European Council before becoming effective regulation.

On April 20, immediately after the vote, MiCA rapporteur and Member of the European Parliament Stefan Verger called MiCA “A milestone for the cryptoasset industry.”

Amid regulatory pressures in the United States, the European Parliament approves MiCA, a legal framework for crypto-regulation. This week, a vote by lawmakers confirmed that the European Parliament approves the MiCA law, making this proposal a law by 2024. Just a few hours ago, the approval held in the European Union parliament, approved with 525 votes in favor and 38 against the MiCA bill.

The regulatory framework established by MiCA seeks to mitigate risks and reduce market instability that has left millions of consumers bankrupt. The recently passed bill will create important regulatory mechanisms for the European Union. This would leave the EU ahead of the US and UK in regulatory and legal matters.

The passage of MiCA also becomes a hurdle for the United States. The growing cryptoasset and digital economy industry is strongly questioning where to set up shop after the regulatory instability in the US, this could further motivate and energize the market and new alternatives in the region.

However, not everything is exactly pleasant; the European Parliament approves the MiCA law that, precisely, clarifies the rules of the game both in advertising and in other areas. That said, platforms will be obliged to inform users about the inherent risks of investing in cryptocurrencies.

European Parliament Approves MiCA Law

In traditional markets these practices have been in place for over 50 years (and continue to change to protect consumers). On the other hand, in the new digital markets, users were adrift in terms of regulation.

Furthermore, environmental concerns over questionable practices are another issue addressed by MiCA. Companies of any kind (industry related) will be required to disclose their energy consumption and the impact of their digital assets on the environment. This goes hand in hand with the European Union’s strict policies on environmental damage.

One of the highlights of MiCA is the obligation for companies to back all their assets in stable currencies. This would ensure that, during mass withdrawals, solvency and liquidity would be guaranteed for each and every user.

Additionally, stable currencies that become very large on such platforms will be capped at $200 million per day, a clear restriction on the reign of USDT and USDC.

The Power of ESMA

The European Securities and Markets Authority, or ESMA, will have sufficient powers to ban or intervene crypto platforms if they fail to protect the user and investor. As it has been seen above, these breaches of user and investor protection have created large bankruptcies. This is why ESMA will be empowered to act if necessary. All this will be possible thanks to the legal frameworks established by MiCA.

Mairead McGuinness, who is currently the European Commissioner for financial services, clarified that this legislation could come into force in 2024. Therefore, companies should adapt quickly and be in full compliance with operating all their services in the EU territory.

Ethereum: Everything You Need to Know about the State of ETH in Staking, Bots, and Sandwiches

ETH sees a surge in trade exits, as discounted price attracts aggressive accumulation. At least 19,500 validators are in the retirement queue, after the Shapella update. MEV and bot activity on the Ethereum network went uphill.

It’s been over a week since Ethereum’s highly anticipated Shapella update. While there was a lot of anticipation, many ETH holders were concerned about potential selling pressure from validators unlocking their ETH. The concerns were genuine given the large sum of ETH that had been locked up.

According to a recent analysis by Coinshare, validators who withdraw their ETH have a 12-day waiting period for the Shapella update to withdraw all their staked coins. It also revealed that there were 19,500 validators in the withdrawal queue and 7,800 validators in the deposit queue. There were concerns about the possible increase in withdrawals, especially since more than 95% of validators have not yet withdrawn.

Does Validator Move Mean Validator Migration?

The CoinShares data also revealed that most validators were withdrawing their staked ETH from Kraken to switch to a different staking platform. The data suggested that approximately 80% of the ETH that was withdrawn was from Kraken, due to recent SEC regulatory pressure that the exchange has been receiving from the SEC.

The key determinant for analyzing the selling pressure based on validators withdrawing their staked ETH was whether they would stake their ETH on other platforms. There was a strong possibility that other platforms like Lido could absorb most of the validators.

ETH Demand Status

An assessment of the level of demand for ETH could help determine the extent of the selling pressure. The latest ETH trade flow data on Glassnode revealed a sharp increase in trade outflows over the past 2-3 days.

Currency outflows were almost twice the amount of currency inflows. This could indicate that there was a strong accumulation courtesy of the latest ETH price discount. As far as whale activity is concerned, whales controlled approximately 32% of the current supply of ETH at this time.

Such signs confirmed that the market was regaining confidence, albeit not strong enough to push ETH back above $2,000 for now. Part of the current uncertainty may have to do with the as-yet-unknown fate of the validators who are still in the unstacked incomplete cashouts.

Bots and Sandwiches

A lot of bot activity was observed on the Ethereum network. According to EigenPhi data, over the past month, MEV bots on Ethereum set a new record by making $1.035 million in profit through 11,640 transactions. This included $940,000 in profits from sandwich attacks.

It is worth noting that a sandwich attack is a type of frontal attack used by MEV (miner extractable value) bots in which they place two trades around a target trade to exploit the price difference for profit. The large number of MEV bots and sandwich attacks can cause the Ethereum network to slow down due to increased congestion and transaction fees. This can have a negative impact on overall network efficiency and user experience.

How Governments Use Cryptocurrencies to Evade Sanctions

Binance and other cryptocurrency exchanges have allegedly helped governments circumvent sanctions. The governments of the world are not idle in the face of this problem, but they have a lot of work ahead. It will not be easy to stop illicit activity without invading legitimate crypto transactions.

According to mounting evidence compiled by Chainalysis, cryptocurrencies are being used to evade economic sanctions. This is not a new problem, but it is escalating.

A large portion of the illicit funds in recent months have flowed between Binance and Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex. Reportedly, most of the transactions were made in the low-profile cryptocurrency TRON, making it easy for users to hide their identities.

Sanction Hunters

According to Reuters, based on data compiled by Chainalysis, the flow of transactions between Binance and Iran’s largest exchange, Nobitex, allowed Iranian companies to circumvent sanctions and conduct about $8 billion worth of transactions.

In addition, three-quarters of the funds were in the form of TRON, a “low-profile” cryptocurrency that helps users remain anonymous and offline, thus fostering clandestine and criminal operations.

Chainalysis stated in a recent preview of its 2023 Crypto Crime Report that last year, illicit transactions involving crypto increased for the second year in a row. In total, they reached $20.100 million, the highest figure in history. According to the data, 44% of that total flow of deals was activity involving sanctioned governments or organizations.

Regulators Target Crypto Addresses

Governments and law enforcement agencies are not sitting idly by on the problem, the JD Supra report makes clear. They are cracking down on those who flout economic sanctions by using crypto assets.

The US Office of Financial Assets Control (OFAC) has not only imposed sanctions on violators but has also expanded its operations to target cryptocurrency addresses linked to bad actors. Additionally, in the UK, lawmakers introduced regulations requiring companies to report any breach of OFAC-imposed financial sanctions.

Sanctions are Strengthened

According to JD Supra, as the trends worsen, governments and other regulators may have revised their approach. They will have to intensify their enforcement efforts to ensure the sanctions stick.

A stricter approach could help stem the flow of illicit transactions and money laundering. However, the report makes it clear that this will not be a quick and easy solution, as the problem is complex, so issues of regulatory overreach arise.

Officials must exercise caution when going after sanctions violators so that they do not trample on the rights of legitimate cryptocurrency users.

On the downside, more restrictive regulation could be seen, such as OFAC’s decision to sanction the Tornado Cash software protocol, which could create potential repercussions for legitimate actors that interact with it.

The good news is that according to Chainalysis, cryptocurrency services are generally mostly cooperative in the face of requests for help from governments. Thus, exchanges know that it does not help them that rogue states that violate sanctions sully the name of cryptocurrencies.

In short, regulating cryptocurrencies to ensure compliance with economic sanctions is a complex task. It requires collaboration between governments and regulators, as well as the cooperation of crypto exchanges. Only then there will be the hope of curbing the use of cryptocurrencies to evade economic sanctions.

Bitcoin is at a Turning Point with its Price at USD 28,800

0

Turning point for Bitcoin as the current correction changes the nature of the USD 30,000 breakout.

Bitcoin fell below USD 29,000 on April 20 as bulls faced a battle for the ground regained in March, which was reflected in a 1-hour candlestick chart of the BTC/USD pair published by TradingView.

Will USD 30,000 Become the Ultimate “Bart Simpson Chart” for Bitcoin?

According to data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView, the BTC/USD pair was headed for USD 28,800 on Bitstamp. Earlier moves below USD 28,600 were quickly bought, but Bitcoin was still threatening to give turn USD 29,000 resistance into support on the day as traders were eyeing a crucial support zone.

Crypto Tony (@CryptoTony__) posted on April 20, 2023 on his Twitter account a $BTC / $USD update of which he commented as follows:  In support now, so I’m trading quickly for a long time as we hold above the lows at $28,550 on a 4-hour close, he emphasized We’ll see how this plays out today….

Checkmate, senior on-chain analyst at Glassnode wrote in part of the Twitter analysis that “Although the Bitcoin market is correcting, we still have the average transactor taking profits.”

He added that “To me, this indicates that tokens are still being taken off the table, and that we still don’t have a full-blown front-end buyer exit (like in March).”

Checkmate pointed out that it was waiting for realized losses to take over as a “panic” signal from those who bought BTC when it crossed USD 30,000 this month.

A chart showed the Adjusted Spent Output Profit Ratio (aSOPR) metric, which captures the aggregate gains and losses from on-chain transactions. Bitcoin aSOPR chart, published by Checkmate on Twitter

Some were more optimistic than others. Analyst Matthew Hyland pointed to one-month lows in Bitcoin’s relative strength index (RSI) on daily time frames.

The RSI gives an idea of how overbought or oversold the BTC/USD pair is at a given price level, and while still relatively high, such a reset and subsequent reversal can signal the start of an uptrend.

Separately, popular trader and analyst “Jelle” continued to observe a copycat formation by the BTC/USD pair, which cleanly followed a price fractal from 2020.

Ultimately, this produced a so-called “Bart Simpson” pattern: a rally to the upside, followed by a plateau and subsequent pullback, only to break higher later.

Jelle predicted that so far, USD 28,800 has served as a bottom. If we hold here for a week or so, I see us breaking above USD 30,000 before long. This can be observed in the BTC/USD pair with the “Bart Simpson” pattern chart, posted by Jelle on his Twitter account.

BTC Price Returns to its Logical Place

With volatility returning to the BTC/USD pair in recent days, John Bollinger, creator of the Bollinger Bands volatility indicator, urged caution.

Bitcoin, he noted on the day, had reversed away from its upper Bollinger band, abandoning a break beyond it.

He tweeted that Bitcoin just reversed back to its middle Bollinger Band and its previous breakout level. We call this a logical place; it is time to pay attention. TradingView published a 1-day candlestick chart of the BTC/USD pair with its Bollinger Bands (Bitstamp).

Intel Halts Digital Mining Chips Production

0

The American hardware manufacturer announced the end of the production of Blockscale Series 1000 chips for digital mining equipment.

One year after its launch, Intel’s Blockscale 1000 series is halted, according to the US company’s recent announcement. The hardware manufacturer claims that it is focused on an aggressive cost reduction plan, due to which the production of chips for digital mining equipment is canceled.

In June 2022, the manufacturer embarked on a new project focused on digital currencies. However, at that time the cryptocurrency market was going through one of the strongest winters in recent years. Thus, although this new business had brought some progress for the technology company, it was not enough.

Like most companies in this sector, Intel is in a complex situation, as this firm is not a dominant player in the international semiconductor market. In order to be on par with its big competitors, therefore, it must make great investment efforts, which implies the reduction of expenses in order to improve the business strategy.

Intel Makes a Breakthrough Decision

For Intel it is paramount to keep fit in the face of sharp competition. Cost-cutting must be aggressive and strict if it aims at becoming a second-rate company in a fast-changing market. The production of chips for digital mining does not fit into this equation.

According to a Reuters report, Intel will stop taking orders for the Blockscale Series 1000 ASIC on October 20 this year. Likewise, shipments will stop in April 2024, as reported by the company itself. Meanwhile, the resources saved with this movement will be dedicated to other facets of greater benefit to the manufacturer.

Intel chips are structured for the Sha-256 algorithm, that is, to mine Bitcoin. They have a computing power of 580 GH/s.

In particular, production efforts will focus on creating “certain types of chips” for foreign customers. With this comes the end of a stage of the company’s incursion in the world of cryptocurrencies. It should be noted that in 2021 the mining business was one of the most profitable in the world.

At that time, engaging in the production of digital mining chips was one of the moves with the highest returns. The largest companies in this industrial sector could not keep up with the demand for mining equipment. Thus, Bitmain’s full production was set aside months in advance.

Demand Fell, and Business Collapsed

The cryptocurrency market entered a dark phase during the second quarter of 2022. Interest in investing sent the price of Bitcoin plummeting from $69,000 to just over $16,000 per coin. With such a fall, the returns of the digital mining business also went to a minimum.

Large publicly traded mining companies implemented emergency measures to avoid going bankrupt. Among these actions, the suspension of the purchase of ASIC equipment stands out. With this, the business went from being one of the most lucrative to be one of the most feared in the investment world. This reality affected Intel and its new Blockscale Series 1000 space.

Although the news was not the best, the company experienced progress in this field. Companies that built their customer base include Argo Blockchain, Hive Blockchain Technologies, Block, and GRIID Infrastructure. This modest advance allows Intel to leave the doors open for further forays into the crypto market.

Despite this, the priority now is to advance general advanced production and not focus on the creation of digital mining chips.

Bitcoin [BTC] Preparing for a Bigger Jump Now That It’s Back to $29k?

Bitcoin traded 3% lower than the previous day and is currently down to $29,278. However, the number of addresses with more than 0.1 BTC reached an all-time high.

Ever since Bitcoin [BTC] crossed the $30k mark, traders and enthusiasts of the king coin have rejoiced in its position. The start of Q2 also saw a number of newcomers in the crypto community showing a renewed interest in BTC.

However, more recently, BTC changed hands below the $30k mark at $29,278 after falling almost 3% in the last 24 hours. Therefore, it is worth analyzing what disturbed BTC’s path to reach new highs in the $30k zone.

Was Everything Temporary?

According to data from CryptoOnchain’s CryptoQuant analysis, an increase in BTC selling led to a price correction in the last 24 hours. According to the data analyzed, long-term BTC holders who sold their assets caused the price of the king coin to drop.

However, the analyst also noted an increase in the BTC exit trade balance. This meant that a growing number of BTC investors were moving their coins into wallets. Therefore, this could offer BTC some much-needed support to get back on its run to $30k.

According to another CryptoQuant analysis, BTC’s ongoing trajectory could be similar to the 2018 bear market. Prior to the 2019 bull run, the BTC price held significantly below the realized price in 2018. Before BTC could embark in its 2023 bull run, the final capitulation phase saw BTC trade much lower than its realized price.

It is important to bear in mind that in the ‘crypto’ space, the words of Brian Armstrong, co-founder, and CEO of Coinbase, continue to resonate about the company’s possible departure from the United States and its predisposition to a “long” legal confrontation against the SEC.

In the rest of the market, notable falls in most crypto assets. Ripple (XRP), Polygon (MATIC), as well as Solana (SOL), are down between 5% and 7%. Cardano (ADA), leaves 3%.

So, Year of the Bulls?

Data from the intelligence platform Santiment showed that sentiment-weighted toward BTC witnessed a surge starting on April 18. This indicated that the traders in the market had a positive outlook toward BTC. However, social dominance and market value to realized value (MVRV) witnessed a decline as the news is still unfolding.

Although the MVRV ratio saw a notable increase since the beginning of March, a drop indicated a subtle bearish trend around the cryptocurrency.

Recently, BTC’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 57, while the Stochastic RSI stood at 73.8. With the RSI and Stochastic RSI in neutral zones, the price of BTC could go up or down, depending on further buying or selling pressure from the market. The neutral positions also did not indicate a significant bullish or bearish bias.

Despite the neutral market sentiment at the moment, BTC saw growth in some areas. For instance, according to data tweeted by the on-chain intelligence platform Glassnode, the number of addresses with more than 0.1 BTC reached ATH on April 19.
