SEC Freezes $50 Million to Cryptocurrency Firm Digital Licensing

The SEC “emergency” halted the Digital Licensing pyramid scheme in Utah. They would have defrauded investors out of up to $50 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum. The fraudulent scheme was planned from March 2021 to sell unregistered securities under the title “node license”.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced the “emergency” stop of a fraud scheme carried out by Utah-based cryptocurrency company Digital Licensing. The fraudulent crypto scheme would be for 50 million dollars and would involve 18 people.

The SEC admitted that it received “emergency help” from authorities to stop the Digital Licensing fraud scheme, obtaining a temporary asset freeze, a restraining order, actions against the company’s four directors, as well as other emergency measures. The platform operated as a “DEBT Box”.

SEC: Digital Licensing Scammed Investors with Bitcoin and Ethereum

The Digital Licensing officers charged are Jason Anderson, his brother Jacob Anderson, Schad Brannon, and Roydon Nelson, who along with 13 others ran a $50 million fraud scheme. The scheme purported to sell cryptocurrency to hundreds of Americans. The scam would have received deposits in Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The United States District Court for the District of Utah holds that the fraudulent scheme was planned since March 2021 to sell unregistered securities under the title “node license”, which would allegedly generate cryptocurrency tokens through mining. It promised that generating companies would “boost” the value of the tokens.

Digital Licensing promised to generate tokens called “DEBT Box”, which, upon entering investment, resulted in million-dollar profits for managers and some investors. The SEC maintains that the “node licenses” were fake because they were “a front” to hide that each token in the supply was a code on a Blockchain.

Tracy S. Combs, Salt Lake regional SEC director, explained the following:

“We allege that DEBT Box and its principals lied to investors about virtually every material aspect of their unregistered offering of securities, including by falsely stating that they were engaged in crypto asset mining. We filed this emergency action to protect the victims of the defendants’ unlawful actions and stop further harm.”

Furthermore, the SEC’s complaint alleges that DEBT Box and its principals, along with defendants James Franklin, Western Oil Exploration Company Inc., and Ryan Bowen, lied to DEBT Box investors about the revenues of the businesses purportedly driving the value of the tokens.

SEC Will Follow the “Hunt” of Digital Licensing Executives

The Stock Exchange Commission will seek that the managers return all the illicit profits and for this, the investigation will continue, while they seek to gather the assets for the benefit of the affected investors. The SEC has been very vigilant when it comes to securities fraud in recent years. especially when the alleged values fall under the umbrella of cryptocurrencies.

According to the SEC report, the investigation “is being conducted by Joseph Watkins, Laurie Abbott, and Mitchell Davidson of the Salt Lake Regional Office and Karaz Zaki of SEC Headquarters.”

The SEC issued the following recommendations to investors to detect fraud:

  • High-yield claims with little to no risk.
  • Non-registered investment professionals.
  • Aggressive sales tactics.
  • Problems with sales documents.
  • No net worth or income requirements.
  • “No one else seems to be involved.”
  • Virtual or simulated offices.
  • Unsolicited investment offers.
  • Suspicious or unverified biographies of managers or promoters.

NFT Trading Cools Off, but Developers Keep Enthusiasm for Web3

0

NFT trading slows, but interest in Web3 and Bitcoin NFTs remains strong.

NFTs took off in 2020 and have been gaining popularity ever since, especially in the digital art world. NFTs have generated great enthusiasm, but at the same time have been criticized for being volatile, highly speculative, and vulnerable to scams.

The value of NFTs is set by the market, i.e. supply and demand, and can be bought and sold in the same way as physical assets. NFTs are digital representations of assets and can also represent real world items such as artwork and real estate. Some users find that tokenizing tangible real-world assets in this way makes buying, selling, and trading more efficient, as well as potentially reducing the likelihood of fraud.

The world of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) has undergone a significant change in recent times. Although NFT trading has declined, developers continue to show strong interest in Web3 technologies. Let’s take a closer look at the current picture.

Ordinals: Paving the Way for Bitcoin NFTs

Ordinals, a protocol that allows NFTs to be added to the Bitcoin Blockchain, is taking significant steps to support its developers. The creation of a non-profit organization aims to ensure that developers are compensated without compromising neutrality.

Indeed, the non-profit organization will have a board made up of four key people: Raph, Casey Rodarmor, the talented host of the Hell Money podcast, Erin Redwing, and the pseudonymous Ordinals coach, known as Ordinally. Together, they will carry the vision of Bitcoin Ordinals forward and lead the way to a future filled with innovation and possibility.

Programmer Casey Rodarmor first introduced signups to the Bitcoin mainnet in January, laying the groundwork for NFTs on Bitcoin. The development of this technology was primarily funded by Rodarmor, along with donated contributions to the core developers.

The NFT Trading Cooling Down

While the development side of NFTs continues to thrive, the business side has seen a noticeable slowdown. This “icy” phase in NFT trading is in stark contrast to the feverish interest seen in previous months.

According to a mid-year summary by CryptoSlam, the trading volume of these digital assets dropped sharply in the first six months of 2022.

Total NFT sales figure fell at the end of June to $800 million at the end of June, despite hovering around $4 million in early January. This figure represents a drop of 80% in the first six months of the year.

The cooling off of NFT trading may be indicative of a broader shift in focus within the crypto community. As the euphoria around NFTs settles, attention may be turning to other promising areas, such as Web3 technologies.

Continued Interest in Web3

Despite the slowdown in NFT trading, developers remain enthusiastic about Web3. The underlying technology and potential applications continue to attract interest and investment.

The continued enthusiasm for Web3 suggests that the world of NFTs is far from over. The integration of NFTs with the Bitcoin Blockchain and ongoing development efforts point to a promising future for both Web3 and NFTs.

All in all, the NFT landscape is evolving, with a decline in trading, but sustained interest in Web3 development and technologies. The creation of a non-profit organization for Ordinals and the continued push towards integrating NFTs with the Bitcoin Blockchain reflect a field that is maturing and diversifying. The future of NFTs and Web3 looks bright, with developers leading the way.

Developer Locks his ETH for 100 Years by Wanting to Create a Memecoin

This happened to a developer who wanted to create a cryptocurrency.

A developer “accidentally” staked five ethers worth around $9,000 at the current ETH price, instead of his test cryptocurrency. The problem is that everything has been left blocked for 100 years.

The developer got noticed on 4chan, a technology discussion forum. There he asked for help creating his ERC-20 test token on the Ethereum tesnet and staking it, thus blocking it.

A netizen then suggested that he use the UNCX network protocol to lock up liquidity tokens, which he did by adding five ethers and 1 billion proof tokens as liquidity on Uniswap.

He then proceeded with a padlock using the UNCX protocol, thus sealing the fate of these tokens for the next 100 years, which is until December 31, 2123.

After this maneuver, he declared that he would “get out of there” without specifying more. Shortly after, he confirmed that he had managed to recover his ETH, but left doubts by asking how to unlock the tokens, still on 4Chan.

He then claimed that Ether had been locked up for 100 years and that this was the Ethereum testnet. Another user revealed that this was not the case and that these funds had been locked up on the actual mainnet.

Crypto Twitter Lights Up: Crypto Caps $6 Million

The case quickly went viral on social media, with investors seeing the TEST token as an investment opportunity, both for speculation and for the “involuntary” blocking of 1 billion tokens for 100 years.

This caused many to dismiss the possibility of a “rug-pulling”-style scam, where developers of a cryptocurrency abandon the project and sell large amounts shortly after a sharp appreciation, resulting in the cryptocurrency’s sudden collapse, leaving investors in the dark.

The debates quickly began. Was it really a mistake, or was this gesture premeditated to attract attention? For some, the intentional blocking of funds could be a bullish sign for the project, while for others it was just a deliberate ploy to get attention.

Word quickly spread through the cryptocurrency world, and the test token in question generated buzz, with a market capitalization momentarily reaching $6 million. But fate seemed to play against the developer, and the price of the token eventually plummeted, losing 70% of its value.

Crypto Community Reactions

A 4chan user recommended the UNCX Network protocol to lock up liquidity tokens, which resulted in the developer adding five ether and 1 billion test tokens as liquidity on Uniswap and receiving 70,700 LP tokens in return. They then locked the LP tokens using the UNCX network protocol, setting a duration to December 31, 2123.

The developer initially claimed that the locked ether was on the Ethereum testnet; however, another user corrected them and revealed that the real funds were actually locked up for a century. After the event, the price of the test token skyrocketed, with its market cap peaking at $6 million before falling to $1.5 million.

Multiple commenters on Twitter and 4chan have cast doubt on the incident, suggesting it was a premeditated scheme to gain attention. As the debate continues, some Twitter users have even requested to be reminded of the event 100 years from now.

Elon Musk Blunt: X Will not Launch Its Own Crypto Token

Elon Musk confirms that X, formerly Twitter, will not launch its own crypto token.

Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), has categorically stated that his platform will never launch its own cryptocurrency token. This claim came in response to a user warning urging others not to fall for fake tokens or memecoins posing as official X crypto projects.

“Elon Musk and 𝕏 never launched a crypto token. Be careful of such articles,” tweeted @DogeDesigner on August 4, to which Elon Musk replied that “And we never will.” This statement has made it clear that despite the proliferation of small-cap tokens being associated with X, Twitter, or Musk, the platform has no plans to launch its own token.

User @xCaiusLai replied he hoped that “this doesn’t rule out embracing Blockchain technology entirely. Blockchain can still offer many benefits to 𝕏, like transparency, security, and decentralized operations. Keen to see how 𝕏 may leverage this tech in the future!”

Preventing Crypto Scammers from Using Elon Musk to Steal Users?

In recent years, Twitter has been overrun by crypto scammers using Elon Musk’s likeness to mislead unsuspecting investors. More often than not, these scammers have used free Twitter accounts to carry out their scams, buying paid ads, and even promising heavy users could win a trip to Mars or a Neuralink brain chip, all thanks to Elon Musk.

A few years ago, hackers created a page with a fake video of Musk promoting a Neuralink-branded cryptocurrency. Although Musk has promoted Bitcoin and Dogecoin in the past, he has never released his own coin for Neuralink, Tesla, SpaceX, or any of his other brands.

“I am here to tell you about the Neuralink crypto token, the cryptocurrency that will change the world forever,” said the fake Musk in the video. “With this token, you have a unique opportunity to invest in the future of brain-machine interfaces,” continued the fake Musk.

The video is fake, but there are elements in the upper corners, including the Wall Street Journal logo and the word “live,” that fool the careless user. The fake video was made using a clip from an interview Musk did in December 2021.

The scam website also promised that anyone who buys a large amount of these fraudulent tokens would be able to talk to Elon Musk himself, likely an opportunity for scammers to get more money from anyone who thinks they are talking to the real CEO of Twitter.

The most heartbreaking story to emerge from consumer complaints was someone who knew they had been scammed out of a fake Tesla token but insisted that Elon Musk actually released some kind of token.

Just to be clear, Musk did not launch a new token and has no plans to do so. Consequently, it is always recommended to do your research thoroughly before making any major investment decisions.

Musk’s Impact on the Cryptocurrency World

Musk has been closely associated with Dogecoin, the dominant meme cryptocurrency. On one occasion, the owner of X changed the Twitter logo to that of Dogecoin, which caused a sharp increase in the price of the coin at the time. However, despite his influence in the cryptocurrency world, Musk has made it clear that X will not go down the path of tokenization.

US Senate Passes National Defense Bill That Also Targets Crypto Mixers

The US Senate has passed a defense bill that also affects cryptocurrencies. This implies that the companies that are dedicated to crypto trading will have to pass more controls and follow some rules to avoid money laundering and sanctions.

Additionally, this means that the government wants to know more about the anonymous transactions that are made with crypto mixers, which are like washing machines that clean the origin of the coins. Companies that invest in China will have to inform Uncle Sam about what they do.

These measures are new for the crypto market, although in other contexts they are common practices.
