Deloitte Shows Strategies for Managing Risks When it Comes to Bitcoin Investments.

Deloitte published an operating manual for investing in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Other topics under discussion were taxes, auditing, and risk management.

On the first day of the Bitcoin for Corporations conference that MicroStrategy organized, Deloitte consultants placed under discussion various essential topics, including some financial aspects of investing in Bitcoin as an institution or corporate entity.

During the Bitcoin Finance Considerations conference, accounting, tax, auditing, and risk management considerations on corporate investments in Bitcoin went under discussion.

Consultants for Deloitte, Amy Park, a specialist in blockchain and audits, and Andrew Massey, a specialist in accounting and taxation in cryptocurrencies, answered a set of questions from Phong Le, President Chief Financial Officer of MicroStrategy, who moderated the session on Tuesday.

In the first instance, Park clarified that investor sentiment has shifted from getting rich as fast as possible to save their Bitcoin savings and hodl. The consultancy noted that the trend would serve to consolidate the integration of Bitcoin into existing business services as a safeguard of value from now on. Solutions regarding blockchain networks could be under development.

Park also stated that the declaration of savings or positions in cryptocurrencies growth in terms of tax reports. This topic made the subject of taxes on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies one of the most significant matters under discussion, “the elephant in the room.” Massey, an expert in taxation and accounting in cryptocurrencies, stated that it is essential to record BTC amounts and transactions.

A particular emphasis highlighted the importance of basic knowledge in companies that choose to set investment in Bitcoin. Park also noted that they must proceed with caution regarding the number and experience of consultants available.

Regarding the teams’ rapport, Phong Lee, who moderated the conversation, stated that group engagement is crucial and part of the Bitcoin ethic. This ethos would involve sharing the idea that technology can solve problems, “like a software company,” Lee said, referring to MicroStrategy.

Bitcoin and Risk Management: Is the Cryptocurrency an Ally or an Enemy?

There were questions about Bitcoin’s inclusion in institutional reserves to counteract the US dollar depreciation (USD). Lee answered that Corporations have realized that it is the best way to minimize risks.

To make this risk manageable, Amy Park, a specialist in the area, suggests not making decisions in the market under psychological pressures of any kind or nature. Third parties opinions would lead users to misunderstand the market and make bad choices.

Risk management must first consider the proper way and method of investing in Bitcoin. But also they must be aware of resources and their availability.

Whether through an index fund, the bond of a company with reserves in Bitcoin, or an investment firm, it must be determined what role each participant plays, internal or external to the investment entity.

“If you have others to invest, you are subject to their decisions and policies. Make sure your risk is proportionate and ensure that others take care of your investment,” Massey said.

Despite Great Institutional Support for Bitcoin, Spain and South Africa See Risks

The Bank of Spain has maintained the discourse on the risks of investing in Bitcoin since 2018. South African authorities announced that they are working on laws to regulate the use of crypto assets.

In recent days, the central banks of Spain and South Africa have insisted on warning about the risks of investing in Bitcoin (BTC). This has occurred despite the institutional support and growing adoption that the pioneering cryptocurrency has had.

On January 28th, the Bank of Spain (BDE) warned Spanish citizens about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The financial institution said that “no central bank or public authority supports them even though they bill themselves as alternatives to money.”

They claimed that there are “extreme volatility and liquidity problems” with digital assets. They further stated that price changes are not “always transparent”, so anyone could be “manipulate them”.

In the same way, they consider that cryptocurrencies have a speculative character since those who acquire them could have difficulties selling them. Furthermore, they say that they do not have the guarantees that “banking or investment products” can offer.

The Bank of Spain has already issued warnings of the same type on previous occasions. In 2018, they dedicated themselves to making the same remarks about cryptocurrencies in general.

For its part, the South African Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) reported receiving many complaints from investors. They claimed that “they have lost their savings by making cryptocurrency-related investments.”

Other users stated that they had been victims of “scams” with investments in digital assets that “promised a high level of returns.”

The FSCA and the Spanish bank emphasize that no central bank issues crypto assets, and the agency do not regulate the related investments. They assert that “people are unlikely to recover their money if something goes wrong.

At this moment, the FSCA is creating a regulatory framework for investments in digital assets. They say that they are seeking to “help better understand and regulate the use of cryptocurrencies in the coming months.”

Massive Institutional Support for Bitcoin

In December, companies from the United States, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and Germany invested USD 20 billion in the main cryptocurrency on the market.

According to the Bitcoin Treasuries website, around 28 publicly traded companies, private companies, and mixed funds hold multi-million-dollar positions in BTC. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust leads this category with savings of 649,130 BTC, behind the Mt.Gox service with 141,686 BTC and Block. One (EOS) with 140,000 BTC.

Spain, Bitcoin, and CBDCs

The monetary authority of Spain continues to call for caution with Bitcoin due to its volatility and risks. However, they are also open to discuss cryptocurrencies, especially central bank digital currencies (CBDC).

Last July, the BDE joined a debate on CBDCs to review the reasons for their issuance. Likewise, they sought to conduct a preliminary analysis of the main implications of the issuance of this type of currency.

They did not stop recognizing the role of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, in addition to fiat-pegged cryptocurrencies or stablecoins. Also, they note that those crypto assets have contributed to the acceleration of research into CBDCs.

It is necessary to remember that the investor must do his research before buying cryptocurrencies or other assets. That will allow him to make better decisions, thus making the best use of his investment.

Ecuadorian Woman Goes to Prison for Five Years for Fraud Using the Name of OneCoin

The defendant provided codes to buy the fake cryptocurrency on the Internet. The victims deposited the funds into the savings account of the woman’s 8-year-old daughter.

In recent days, a woman from Ecuador received a five-year prison sentence for illegally raising money. She falsely offered her potential victims codes to invest in the well-known Ponzi OneCoin scheme. The woman will have to pay a fine of 12 basic salaries (USD 4,800) and compensation of USD 10,000 to each victim.

According to Public Heritage Prosecutor, Santiago Guzmán, Ivonne O., promised her victims high economic rewards in exchange for an alleged investment. The victims deposited the funds into the savings account of Ivonne O’s 8-year-old daughter. This indicates that the defendant was not directly promoting the OneCoin scheme, but was using its name for the scam.

A statement from the Public Ministry explains that “Ivonne O. provided them with access codes to a web page upon receiving the money. She told the victims that they could invest in the supposed cryptocurrency.” However, they could no longer enter the portal after a certain time, “confirming the deception against them.”

The evidence that the prosecution agent presented to the magistrates was not only based on the testimonies of the victims. They also took into account documents that record the transfers that the victims made to the defendant. The judges of the Pichincha Criminal Guarantees Court used this basis to sentence Ivonne O. to five years in prison.

Article 323 of the Organic Comprehensive Criminal Code (COIP) of Ecuador penalizes the illegal collection of money with imprisonment from five to seven years. Besides, “whoever conducts unauthorized exchange or monetary operations on a regular and massive basis will go to prison for three to five years.”

There Are Still Scams in the Name of OneCoin

There have already been scams linked to the fraudulent OneCoin project in the past in various countries. Although there are now thousands of victims and lawsuits in process in the world, there are still frauds with promises of easy profits.

In December, Argentina’s Public Ministry ordered the arrest of 12 individuals promoting the OneCoin pyramid scheme. Eight of the suspects, including Konstantin Ignatova, went to prison. They allegedly committed crimes of conspiracy and fraud through a fake cryptocurrency.

In the cryptocurrency sector, people classify this project as the largest pyramid scam. There are plans to bring it to the big screen featuring Oscar winner Kate Winslet, who starred in the movie “Titanic”.

The movie about OneCoin, called “Fake”, is based on a book by Jen McAdam that tells the story of a victim of the scheme. The author of the book says that she was involved in the project, losing around USD 300,000.

Although the OneCoin project promised to create a cryptocurrency in 2014, it works like a Ponzi scheme. It is a fraudulent operation that involves paying interest to the investors who participate at the beginning of the project. That money comes from new investors, rather than from genuine profit.

Treasury of Spain reveals a plan to Consolidate Payment of Taxes for the Use of Bitcoin

The entity will apply three types of actions to prevent fraud. Exchanges in Spain must report on balances and transactions of their users.

The State Tax Administration Agency of Spain published this February 1 the Annual Plan for Tax and Customs Control’s general guidelines. These guidelines’ goals are to minimize tax evasion, including actions for cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC).

The entity dependent on the Ministry of Finance will apply three types of actions to prevent potential fraud regarding cryptocurrencies. According to the document, the rise of virtual asset markets generates “fiscal risks” requiring particular efforts to grant access to delicate information.

The agency established that it might request information from various sources, including bitcoin exchanges with roots in Spain. The agency is taking these steps for users to voluntarily declare and pay taxes that hold a close relationship to operations with cryptocurrencies.

The agency claimed through the document about obtaining information from various sources about operations regarding cryptocurrencies. There are expectations for incorporating this plan into the model of goods and rights abroad; also, establishing an autonomous information obligation on cryptocurrencies.

The agency’s second action will be the application of a “systematization and analysis of the information obtained.” The purpose is to facilitate the control of the operations’ taxation and the origin of the funds used to acquire cryptocurrencies.

A third guideline promotes international cooperation and participation in forums to obtain information on operations with cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets. The agency clarified once more that cryptocurrencies, as a means of payment, represent a challenge and that their growth would reduce cash.

Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies Need more Control

To find out the implications of the agency’s plan, José Antonio Bravo, a Spanish economist who specialized in the tax and accounting area, indicated that the program is a breakdown of the actions that the agency plans to carry out to comply with its Strategic Plan in the 2020-2023 period. The plan’s design aims to take control over tax fraud, not only with cryptocurrencies but also in general.

The Government of Spain had approved a bill that would require the report of all operations with bitcoin. The so-called “Law of prevention measures to combat tax avoidance” would seek a “greater control of cryptocurrencies.”One of the provisions for those who do not declare their cryptocurrencies outside of Spain would be sanctions of at least 10,000 euros.

The agency plan appears to be a formalization of actions that occurred in the past. In 2021, the agency shows its desire to make it clear that there will be more attention on the payment of taxes among those who operate with bitcoin and other essential cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin’s Reddit Gains 100,000 Users in One Day

The r / bitcoin subreddit now has more than 2 million users. Something new just born from the combination of social networks and technologic entrepreneurship.

A massive wave of new subscribers is rocking the Bitcoin subreddit. In just one day, there was an increase of 100,000 subscribers, gathering a total of more than 2.2 million users. Reddit communities have been receiving more attention and interest since a group of astute Reddit users outpaced Wall Street short bettors last week in the situation that went viral worldwide.

The Bitcoin sub-forum on Reddit added more than 220,000 subscribers over the past week, becoming one of the fastest-growing subreddits, according to metrics from the FrontPageMetrics.com site. One hundred thousand of these new users joined the platform in one single day.

The community of r / WallStreetBets (WSB), responsible for starting the whole movement around GameStop, registered more than 5,000 subscribers in less than a week.

This interest in actions or the GameStop effect seriously impacted the cryptocurrency ecosystem, which is visible when their communities grew and consolidated their Reddit spots. In addition to r / bitcoin, among the fastest growing in the last seven days are r / dogecoin (383,889 new users), r / ethtrader (375,148) and r / SatoshiStreetBets (176,730).

The massive response of users on Reddit appears to be a digital manifestation that the world is at odds with the traditional financial system and the measures that the public administration of nations takes. Many of them allow the issuance of dollars to flow directly to large corporations and not to citizens.

The Gamestop case is an example of the union between social media, a pessimistic situation like this pandemic confinement, and technologic entrepreneurship. There are still dark specters of this situation; some say that it is a more transparent way of investing or a new way of setting prices, all with less government intervention.

The Decentralization of Finance and its Relationship with Reddit and Bitcoin

While the Bitcoin sub-forum has seen recent growth thanks to the GameStop phenomenon, it is also important to mention that the pioneer cryptocurrency is not allowed on the WallStreetBets forum. “Your anti-crypto bot is annoying. You can’t even post GBTC… which is a Wall Street investment. Imagine,” mentioned a user on r / bitcoin.

There is not much acceptance in the bitcoin community about what happens in the WallStreetBets forum. At least, that is what several users are currently commenting about the incident.

Many users don’t think it’s a good idea to think of bitcoin as a short investment; they even believe that putting such cryptocurrency in that position is insulting. For this reason, in a recent post, a user posted a warning aiming at new members: “Leave your WSB autism at the door.” The statement received massive support, with more than 1,000 reactions and 118 comments.

Visa is Testing a New System to Buy Bitcoin from Bank Accounts

The company evaluates its APIs to integrate them with bitcoin services. In case Visa implemented these APIs correctly, the activation would take place at the end of the year.

The multinational financial services corporation, Visa, announced yesterday, February 3 that it is designing a pilot plan for traditional banking customers to carry out operations with bitcoin (BTC) in the United States. The company is testing the performance of its programming interfaces (APIs) to enable the service as soon as possible.

Visa established an alliance with the new bank First Boulevard to advance testing, marking a new stage in its strategy regarding the proper engagement with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

The company explained through a statement that the platform would join forces with its partner Anchorage, the digital asset bank authorized by the Office of the Comptroller of the United States’ Currency. In theory, Visa will now be a bridge that connects First Boulevard users with the crypto assets Anchorage handles.

“First Boulevard will be the first to handle Visa’s new set of cryptocurrency APIs, which will allow its clients to buy, custody, and trade digital assets held by Anchorage. The test will serve to support API capabilities and help other Visa customers to integrate cryptocurrency features into their product offerings,” the press release highlighted.

If it passes all the tests and complies with the security guidelines, Visa thinks that the service could be officially seeing the light of day at the ending stages of 2021. The payment processor’s goal is to serve as a provider to traditional banks and financial institutions that do not have their cryptocurrency infrastructure.

Integrate Services with Bitcoin and Stablecoins

Jack Forestell, director of products at Visa, said that one of the corporation’s goals is to bring cryptocurrencies to the network of more than 70 million establishments that already process payments with credit and debit cards under the issuance of Visa.

The services are also trying to cover other cryptocurrencies beyond bitcoin, as well as stablecoins or stablecoins. Cuy Sheffield, Visa Crypto leader, clarified the considerations of the company about offering support for a proper trade process regarding crypto assets.

Visa’s approach with the bitcoin ecosystem is growing in a very gradual process, the growth that Visa is so notable that it appears now to be at its peak regarding cryptocurrencies. Visa forges and maintains alliances with 35 companies. Many of these companies already applied and operate with cards under the issuance of Visa.

In July 2020, the company released a document titled “Advancing our approach to digital currency” In it, Visa presented seven points that show how important are the roles that Visa’s foundations play in its business models with bitcoin.

Visa’s most important values within the Bitcoin industry are security, privacy, integrity, trust, and regulation. It is also essential to consider that Visa has listed stable coins as a “promising payments innovation.”
