The Bank of England Announces the Creation of a Team to Lead the Development of a CBDC

The Bank of England and other entities would work with stakeholders as partners to assess the creation and development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The UK began to work on creating a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The Bank of England, alongside HM Treasury, the UK government department responsible for developing and executing the UK government’s fiscal and economic policies, has created a task force to explore the possibilities of having a CBDC.

This news came from the Bank of England, which is the entity in charge of dictating the country’s monetary policy and officially the central bank of the United Kingdom. This news appeared to the public in a press release dated April 19.

According to the information, the CBDC would be a “new form of digital money” issued by the central bank for use by “households and businesses.” They also highlighted that cryptocurrency would exist alongside cash and bank deposits and do not plan to replace some money.

However, both authorities in the economic and monetary sphere highlighted that “they have not yet decided on introducing a CBDC in the United Kingdom”.

At the Gates of Innovation and Economic Evolution

With the creation of such a team, the UK central bank and HM Treasury will engage with stakeholders on the benefits, risks, and practicalities of a CBDC.

In this sense, the team’s primary goal is to assume a “strategic approach between the authorities”, promoting a more collaborative and inclusive space.

The group will invite technical experts and financial institutions, merchants, business users, civil society groups, and consumers to play more significant roles throughout this creative process.

The team will also assess the design features of a digital currency and monitor CBDC’s international developments to ensure that the UK “stays at the forefront of global innovation.”

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak presented CBDC’s proposal on Monday as part of a plan to enhance the European country’s competitive advantage. In this regard, Sunak commented:

“Our vision is a more open, greener and more technologically advanced financial services sector. The UK is already known to be at the forefront of innovation, but we need to go further. If we can catch the extraordinary potential of technology, we will consolidate the UK’s position as the world’s pre-eminent financial centre.”

As part of the country’s plans to create a more motivating environment, financial companies that adopt Blockchain technology will now access a digital Sandbox to improve the financial market infrastructure and consolidate their status as technologic companies.

The UK Financial Authority (FCA) will work in partnership with the Bank of England and HM Treasury to carry out this initiative and develop more projects shortly.

XRP Community Filed a Motion against Ripple

The lawyer says that if the SEC is successful in suing Ripple, it could harm the other cryptocurrencies. The whistleblowers claim that several companies are receiving enough damage due to the SEC’s actions.

A group of XRP holders filed a motion in a United States District Court. The objective is for the judicial body to take part in the lawsuit filed by this entity, the Securities and Exchange Commission of that country (SEC), against Ripple due to the alleged sale of unregistered securities to finance the company’s activities.

The 36-page memorandum came to light on Monday, April 19, 2021, by attorney John E. Deaton on behalf of 6,000 holders of the cryptocurrency issued by Ripple. Through this movement, the claim states that many companies and individuals received damage by the SEC’s lawsuit against this company.

“The SEC puts the ownership of XRP holders at the centre of this case and places their interest against the holders’,” the motion states.

The lawyer explained the case through a Twitter account belonging to his company. The lawyer argues that “behind the judge’s back, the SEC violated the rules of the US civil court.” He also spoke concerning requests made by the government entity to foreign governments for information on Ripple.

SEC Lawsuit is an Unprecedented Event in the Cryptocurrency World

Deaton added that when they asked the Court to hear the claims of their defendants, they received insults and provocations from the SEC. Furthermore, the lawyer argued that, in his opinion, XRP is indeed a “promising digital asset” and not a security.

For the professional, “it is clear that those who use XRP have the right to intervene in this case to defend their interests.” The lawyer also maintains that these are “the very interests that the SEC decided to dismiss when it filed its December 2020 complaint.”

The SEC now has until May 3 to present arguments that could oppose the motion, and the attorney for the complainants will have the same chance to show the community’s case before a federal judge on May 17.

The SEC sued Ripple on December 22, 2020, to sell XRP to fund company activities. The SEC considers that asset to be unregistered security, and Ripple, for its part, maintains that it is a “virtual currency.”

Ripple would have raised around USD 1.3 billion since 2013 through the sale of XRP. Also, it would have used that asset to pay consideration such as labour services. Larsen and Garlinghouse are also a target of accusations of making unrecorded personal sales of the alleged security for a total of $ 600 million.

Since the SEC announced charges against Ripple, platforms such as Binance.US and eToro have suspended US trading of XRP. However, the cryptocurrency has been in a bull run for several weeks.

Satoshi Nakamoto Would Reach a Spot as One of the Most Relevant Billionaires in the World

Nakamoto would enter Forbes’ billionaire’s list and surpass Michael Bloomberg with a net worth of more than $ 65.5 billion.

Users and other enthusiasts do not need to feel familiar with his ID and even his face. Most people know that Satoshi Nakamoto is the wealthiest billionaire in the crypto space.

Last week, Forbes magazine posted its famous 2021 Billionaires List, an annual ranking of the net worth of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs. Based on that list, Forbes is selecting and publishing the top 12 leaders of the cryptocurrency industry with the most prosperous fortunes.

However, despite having a fortune of more than 60 billion dollars, the creator of Bitcoin did not rank in the Forbes list. With the price of cryptocurrency reaching new heights and following data suggesting a net worth of more than 1 million bitcoins, Satoshi Nakamoto would today be one of the wealthiest magnates on earth.

Satoshi is an Anonymous Billionaire

Most of the billionaires in the digital currency industry have acquired their fortunes from their Bitcoin and other cryptos holdings. Following the recent rise in crypto market prices, the wealth of many of these leaders has also climbed to a new peak, leading them to change their position within the millionaire list.

The top wealth in the crypto world tripled in a year, from 4 leaders in 2020 to a total of 12 in 2021. Twenty-year-old FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried topped the list with a net worth of      $ 8.7 billion. Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong count on $ 6.5 billion.

Data within the community reveals that these fortunes are just a slight drop in the sea compared to the stash of bitcoins belonging to Nakamoto. Nobody currently knows the identity of the inventor or creator group of the world’s first cryptocurrency, and previous research has suggested that the mysterious entity owns between 750,000 to 1.1 million bitcoins.

At current rates ($ 63,500), Satoshi Nakamoto would rank among the 20 wealthiest people in the world, with a net worth of $ 65.5 billion. Its little hoard of bitcoins represents 5.8% of the total active Bitcoins.

Nakamoto would rank at No. 16 on Forbes’ list of billionaires. Right between Ma Huateng, president of the Internet giant, Tencent; and the richest man in Mexico, Carlos Slim Helú, América Móvil’s owner, the largest mobile telecommunications company in Latin America.

Nakamoto Made his Money in the Early Days

Fortune places Nakamoto above media mogul Michael Bloomberg and the three living sons of the Walmart founder. Nakamoto also has a hoard that doubles the joint net worth of the 12 billionaires of the crypto environment.

Nakamoto did not make his fortune as other billionaires. His money comes from accumulating the passive income derived from the progressive rise of Bitcoin. He started gathering his treasure from mining Bitcoin in the early days when the block reward was 50 BTC, and he was the sole miner of the network.

Fast food Franchise in Venezuela will Now Pay Bonuses to its Employees in Dash

Church’s Chicken has announced that its employees in Venezuela will receive payments in crypto bonds.

The food franchise Church’s Chicken Venezuela has publicly announced on Monday, April 19, that they will implement a new bonus payment system for their staff using the Dash cryptocurrency.

According to what the Franchise says, the Company has been implementing this since December 2020, a test pilot since December 2020. It worked with the chain’s corporate staff, and now the application will be available for the rest of the team.

The fast-food Company explained in detail that every test resulted in a positive validation of 97% of employees, which has prompted them to open the expansion to more parts of the chain’s personnel from now on.

This system’s structure works together with the Dash Text and Dash Core Group teams behind a payment program called “Dasherpay”. This program allows the sending of Dash in an automated way and enables the coordination of payments on dates and times previously determined.

The entire system works in a non-custodial way, which implies that the Company that makes the payments via DasherPay must acquire the Dash by the means that they determine.

This Method is a Solution for the Company’s staff

The Church’s Chicken team in Venezuela highlighted the opinion of Leidimar Amundaraín was unequivocal. She mentioned that this new modality “served as a solution for our staff, ” adding that the system has proven to be easy to manage and beneficial to every employee on the Franchise.

Dash’s team also mentioned in the public note of the announcement that this type of initiative mainly focuses on responding to two needs for Venezuelans.

One of them is the escape from the subsequent inflation problems that affect the whole country, and having a solution for the lack of fiat bills and coins, foreigners in the country, and the deficit that this situation generates in times of constant economic changes.

The Application Awaits its Launch in More Stores

The Dash team itself has expressed enthusiasm for this initiative. They have mentioned that this “is the beginning of a project that will expand its tentacles to more organisations” and that they will work to “solve relevant problems in everyday life of merchants and users in Venezuela.”

The Dash Core Group CEO himself spoke about this new project and let media outlets know that they already carried out studies on the commercial movement in Venezuela. They have led them to verify that “users manage to minimize their problems in more than one 90%, since they can buy what they want many shops that accept Dash in Venezuela, paying the exact amount, in just fractions of seconds.”

Bitcoin and Stablecoins Are an Alternative Investment, According to the Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China

For the time being, the regulations on cryptocurrencies in China will not undergo any changes. The CEO of Babel Finance classified the PBoC deputy governor’s comment as progressive.

People’s Bank of China (PBoC) Deputy Governor Li Bo recently expressed his views on Bitcoin and stablecoins. He recognized this type of asset as an investment alternative during the Boao Forum for Asia.

The new deputy governor of the PBoC stated that they do not consider cryptocurrencies as currencies per se. For that reason, they believe that their role is to position themselves as investment alternatives.

“We consider Bitcoin and stablecoins to be crypto assets. They are investment alternatives rather than currencies per se. Therefore, the main role that we see for them in the future is that of an alternative investment,” said Li Bo, deputy governor of the PBoC.

After Positioning itself as the Largest Buyer of Bitcoin, China Bans Its Use

In 2017, China was the largest buyer of Bitcoin, but it then banned ICOs (initial offerings) and exchanges within its territory. Concerns related to financial instability, scams, and cryptocurrency crime were the reason for it.

This is the first time that China has recognized the value of assets such as cryptocurrencies, according to local media. The Asian country is still analyzing the regulatory requirements to control possible speculation with these assets.

Li Bo said that the PBoC will maintain its current regulations on cryptocurrencies while this assessment happens. Everything seems to indicate that China could accept the use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as long as they comply with regulations.

China Seems to Have Changed Its Opinion on Bitcoin and Stablecoins

Babel Finance CEO Flex Yang called the PBoC deputy governor’s comment “progressive,” according to CNBC Television. For his part, Vijay Ayyar, head of business development with crypto exchange Luno, called it “significant.” Furthermore, he said that it was different from the PBoC’s previous positions on cryptocurrencies.

“Governments are realizing that [Bitcoin] is a viable and established asset class. However, it is still growing and needs to comply with certain regulations. Regulation of cryptocurrencies would be another massive boost for the industry in China and the rest of the world,” said Ayyar.

Li Bo’s Statements Suggest that China Is More Open To Cryptocurrencies

PBoC Deputy President Li Bo is still unclear whether there will be new regulations related to cryptocurrencies in China. However, his remarks could be the prelude to a shift in thought and action around digital asset regulations.

Li Bo’s statements seem to suggest that China could be open to the cryptocurrency market after 4 years. Turkey stopped its adoption, following the recent publication of an Official Gazette. The Central Bank of that country prohibited the use of cryptocurrencies and other digital assets to make payments for purchases and services.

The fear about the illegal use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is not unique to China and Turkey. The United States has also lobbied to make regulations that control the use of these assets. However, they are aware of the relevant role that they play in the world economy.

Bitcoin’s Retracement to USD 50K due to a Power Outage in China Causes a Falling Hash Rate

Analyst Willy Woo explained that a massive power outage in China caused a 40% drop in the Bitcoin hash rate and subsequent price decline.

Over the weekend, Bitcoin (BTC) fell back to $ 50,000 after hovering above $ 60,000 for several days. With a fall of 12% in a few hours, Bitcoin went from USD 61,450 to a bottom of USD 53,354 on Sunday. The collapse beat out other major cryptocurrencies, which also posted losses.

This Monday, the digital currency market appears to rebound as analysts determine the possible reasons for the sudden price correction. Among the theories, some say that a massive blackout in Xinjiang province, one of the dominant areas for Bitcoin mining operations in China, may have been the main factor behind the drop.

Massive power outage in China shuts down miners

The hashing power of significant Bitcoin mining pools in northwest China appears to have plummeted due to a regional power outage for security inspections.

The hash rate or “hash rate” is the unit of measurement of the processing power of the Bitcoin network. This hash rate is a crucial security metric. The higher the hashing (computing) power on the web, the more excellent its security, and overall resistance to attacks.

A report by Wu Blockchain, the author of the Chinese crypto newsletter Wublock, noted the significant decreases in the hash rate of several major groups, with Antpool dropping 24.5%, Binance Pool dropping 20%, BTC.com dropping 18.9%, and Pooling. They were dropping 33% last week.

Another article by Chinese media outlet Wu Talk stated that the Xinjiang region is currently undergoing a “comprehensive security inspection for power outages.” The inspections follow a recent accident related to a flood at a local coal mine that saw 21 miners temporarily trapped in three different locations.

China is a leader of two-thirds of the world’s mining power, with the Xinjiang region being a significant source of Bitcoin’s global hash rate. The Cambridge Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (BECI) estimates that Xinjiang currently accounts for nearly 36% of China’s combined hash power and almost a quarter of the global hash rate.

If Hash Rate Falls 40%, then BTC Falls Back

Blockchain Analyst Willy Woo shared a thread of tweets on the matter. He explained that the massive drop in Bitcoin price on Sunday might have directly responded to the decline in the hash rate, which saw the most significant 24-hour decrease in the last four years.

Woo also noted that, as a knock-on effect, the decline in the hash rate is also in the company of intense selling pressure from Bitcoin whales on significant cryptocurrency exchanges. Shortly after the event, a total of 9,000 BTC went to Binance, Woo explained. He speculated that the intention to sell might have come from an investor with intimate knowledge of what was happening in China.

“I would like to highlight that Binance caters for volume from Asia more than the West. This volume catering is likely to have been sent from a whale with a closer knowledge of Chinese events. “

Woo added that the selling pressure from these two events combined was enough to tip the price below the liquidation levels around $ 59,000, triggering a cascade of automatic liquidations when the detection of losses took place.

Whales and Bitcoin during the Crash

The downside momentum prompted $ 4.9 billion worth of Bitcoin liquidations and another $ 4.4 billion in margin calls in the altcoin markets, recording about 1 million settled accounts. Another essential consideration is assertive sale behaviour in the futures markets.

Meanwhile, according to Ycharts, the hash rate of the Bitcoin network shows a balanced level of 154.29M, down from 164.85M yesterday. This hash rate represents a brief change of -6.40% in the last 24 hours. For other experts in the community, the blackout event has a solid connection to what happened in the market.
