The measure arrives to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform provided to its users. According to the report, the nudes would still be available but under adjustments to an acceptable use policy.

Sexually explicit content will stop being part of OnlyFans features. The subscription platform announced this Thursday, August 19, that, due to the constant pressure from banks and payment methods, it will update and modify its business model regarding pornography. Under all the changes in the scenario, Bitcoin (BTC) would rise as a good option due to services that might not be weak in front of external impositions.

The measure will take effect in October and would apply restrictions to all content(photos or videos) that shows explicit, risky, or illegal sexual behavior. Nudity will keep its position in the platform but will now follow a new “acceptable use” policy that is yet unknown. The London-based network, which has under its veil at least 130 million users is popular due to its erotic content, shared by hundreds of sex workers and even figures from the porn industry.

To save the long-term sustainability of the platform and keep being a hoster of an inclusive community of creators and fans, OnlyFans got forced to evolve and upgrade its content guidelines.

The scenario is unclear about what will happen to the sexually explicit content that remains on the website or will keep being on production until October. The company, created in 2016 and growing during the COVID-19 pandemic, will not change its policy regarding other kinds of content. OnlyFans is a platform widely used by other users like musicians, artists, and fitness enthusiasts.

Amid the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in 2020 and a series of lockdowns worldwide, thousands of people saw in OnlyFans a safe way to gather income and save their finances.

Those users that upload content to OnlyFans have several subscribers or “fans.” They are the ones who pay between 5 and 50 dollars a month to see the videos or images. 80% of the proceeds go to content creators, and the company keeps the other 20%.

Other platforms like OnlyFans but in Bitcoin

What happened with OnlyFans already has repercussions within the bitcoin environment. The Sphinx chat is an application that encourages the dissemination of content and for receiving payments through the Bitcoin Lightning Network. It already has various communities or “tribes” that generate incomes by sharing sexual content.

Onlyplebs or pornshare18 are two of the various “tribes” that have been already organized for interested users to upload their nudity or pornography in exchange for satoshis.

Unlike what happened to OnlyFans, in the case of Sphinx, it does not work with banks or other payments entities.  The service does not have to face pressure from economic entities to regulate the content generated by its users.

The pressure from banks and the means of payment towards services related to pornography is a matter that has happened before. Visa and MasterCard had blocked their means of payments to the Pornhub website. This blockage took place in response to the action taken by the credit and debit card issuing corporations. So the adult entertainment service opted for payments with bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
