The company will place limits to the hash rate on the new RTX series GPU production.

The idea is that the high demand for mining equipment does not affect the gamer market.

Nvidia will restrict capacities on its new GPUs and will limit cryptocurrency mining. This move intends to prevent the market for gamers from having an availability of its highly demanded products.

The high demand for Nvidia cards by cryptocurrency miners such as Ethereum has affected the availability of these GPUs for the gamer market. Therefore, Nvidia’s new strategy is to distinguish between GPU cards with limitations for mining and those that do not, which would be designed for this specific market and activity.

According to an announcement published Tuesday, May 18 on its blog, the next production of the RTX 3080, RTX 3070, and RTX 3060 Ti cards will have a Lite Hash Rate (or Light Processing Power, LHR) label to help customers distinguish between cards intended for mining and cards intended for gaming.

Nvidia’s Statements about Hashrate

GPUs were originally released at their maximum hash rate, and Nvidia wants to make sure that customers know exactly what they are getting when they buy GeForce products,       Because Nvidia GPUs are programmable, users often discover new applications for these cards, such as climate model simulation, genetic sequencing, even deep learning, and robotics. Cryptocurrency mining is one of these new applications.

As previously announced, Nvidia placed limits on the cryptocurrency mining capacity on its GeForce RTX 3060 cards, but some users found a way to avoid this limitation. Although Nvidia had not announced these restrictions so openly, internal sources and the study of specialized users pointed out that these restrictions were already effective on these GPUs.

Now, Nvidia officially speaks about these restrictions, but it remains unclear if this limitation affects the overall performance of the GPUs and how this would affect their performance in terms of gaming and other activities.

The Distinction between Both Functionalities is increasingly accentuated

In February of this year, Nvidia presented its line of GPU cards focused on cryptocurrency mining. The CMP line is already available in various parts of the world.

According to Nvidia, CMPs do not have graphics support (there are no video outputs), which allows improving airflow during mining so that they “can be more densely packed”, that is, stacked together. CMPs also operate with lower frequencies and voltages.

Notably, the mining company HUT 8 announced at the end of March that it had made an investment of USD 30 million for Nvidia GPU cards, intending to expand its mining power in The United States of America.

Despite being one of the most recognized GPU manufacturers in the world, and exploring cryptocurrency mining, Nvidia still deals with strong competitors in this market. The processing power of the new Antminer E9 has been compared to that of 32 Nvidia RTX 3080 cards.
