Mozilla will only allow crypto donations created by Proof of Stake or PoS. The proposal to reject bitcoin received 232 votes in favor and 94 votes against via Wikimedia.

Under the premise of the environmental impact attributed to the mining of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that use Proof of Work (PoW), the non-profit organization and developer of the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Wikimedia Foundation have decided not to receive donations with crypto assets.

Mozilla was the first entity to make its decision known. In that sense, they gave the green light to the non-acceptance of Proof of Work for digital assets because these assets consume more energy, but will accept those from Proof of Participation because they think they consume less energy, as clarified by the Mozilla Foundation in a statement.

The Foundation highlighted that it would release a list of digital assets received at the end of the second quarter of 2022.

According to Mark Surman, CEO of the Mozilla Foundation, in 2021, they decided to adopt a policy of reducing their greenhouse gas footprint year after year, to join the Paris Climate Agreement.

Both Mozilla and Wikimedia debates were opened, which lasted for months. Each of its members expressed their opinion about receiving funds from bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies.

One of the founders of Mozilla said that “everyone involved in the project should be ashamed of this decision to partner with Ponzi scammers who are incinerating the planet,” as reported by CriptoNoticias in early January.

Wikipedia Decided to Take a Similar Position against Bitcoin

The Wikimedia Foundation, the creator of the free Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, was the other non-profit entity that boosted the discussion among its members about whether or not to keep receiving bitcoin and other crypto-assets as donations.

The debate that started earlier this year got started by Molly White, one of Wikipedia’s editors. She presented a proposal to eradicate the option of donations with bitcoin that was active since 2014.

In addition, BTC also accepted bitcoin cash (BCH) and ether (ETH), Ethereum’s native digital asset.

While the debate happened, it got opened to a vote, and the results got revealed on April 10. White’s proposal received 232 votes in favor and 94 votes against the subject. These results highlight clear general community support for the move against receiving digital currencies, with a significant minority opposing it.

The measure is more radical than Mozilla’s because they will not bring opportunities to any digital activity even if they arrive from Proof of Participation. Based on the vote results, they highlighted that the community requests that the Wikimedia Foundation stop receiving crypto donations.
