The legality of the process responsible for collecting biometric data from the Worldcoin project has been questioned. Who has sown doubts in this field is the French privacy watchdog, CNIL. From that office they slipped that the project of the founder of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, “seems questionable.”

The initiative was launched last Monday and has the backing of investors such as Andreessen Horowitz. The original proposal asks users to provide their iris scans in exchange for a digital ID. In some countries, the reward is supplemented with free cryptocurrencies.

Questions from France to the Worldcoin Project

The project’s website ensures that it already has the registration of 2.1 million people. Also, the new WLD cryptocurrency is now available. Registered people can already receive these tokens and exchange them.

Faced with a query made by the Reuters news agency to CNIL, the French control body, the suspicion was installed.

“The legality of this collection seems questionable, as are the conditions for storing biometric data.”

Reuters mentions that the response it received by email from the CNIL stated that it had launched investigations in support of the Bavarian state authority in Germany, which has jurisdiction in this regard.

The proposal issued by the French authority is not the only one. BeInCrypto has reported on the supervision exercised by UK regulators. In this case, no consideration was ventured regarding the legality of the project, but it was made clear that it would be subject to controls. The focus of the regulators is to review how user data will be used throughout the implementation.

These first notes could set the tone for these investigations to increase over time. It should be noted that the first hours of the launch have not been as the promoters of the idea expected, presenting more doubts and falls than successes.

The Worldcoin Foundation has been shown at all times with a collaborative attitude regarding the investigations.

“The project will continue to cooperate with governing bodies on requests for more information about their privacy and data protection practices.”

Worldcoin Project Started with Mixed Opinions and Fall in Price

The Worldcoin token saw a 40% drop in value. It has reached two dollars per token, after reaching $3.2 at its launch. With the disclosure of the aforementioned controls, WLD was seen to be slightly above $2.

A part of the community questions how the project tokens are being distributed, basically because the procedure is not clear. In addition, there are many who define the project as an “Orwellian” product that seeks to control its users and their activities.

Vitalik Buterin, Founder of Ethereum, has proposed a change in approach, suggesting that the project become somewhat more decentralized to allay doubts about the information security of the initiative.

The problem arises in its tokenomics. The way the project tokens are being distributed is of concern to the community.
