There are Tighter Controls on People Saving in Cryptocurrencies and Exchanges in Argentina

Argentine authorities are asking cryptocurrency companies to report users who move high amounts of money. Entrepreneurs in that sector consider there is a witch hunt and ask not to regulate against technologies.

The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) and the Federal Administration of Public Revenues (AFIP) collect information on people who operate with cryptocurrencies. In addition, they seek to monitor the activities of exchanges and have even ordered the closure of their bank accounts.

Data requests and notifications from both agencies to exchanges and other cryptocurrency companies date back several months.

Although some firms claimed not to have problems with regulatory agencies, at least five companies in the sector had their bank accounts closed. That could be due to a directive from the BCRA to banks to discourage the proliferation of those companies. The financial regulator says it is only after those not complying with the legal requirements the country’s authorities request.

In Argentina, there are almost two million user accounts on cryptocurrency platforms. Although there are 50 of those companies, the Argentine Chamber of FinTech has only registered 25.

To reduce that unregulated growth, the Central Bank has requested information during this year. In addition, financial entities have closed the accounts of many exchanges by directive of that parent entity. A representative of that sector sees the measure as a witch hunt, of which banks are the primary target.

The BCRA and the AFIP Are Also After Cryptocurrency Savers

Besides the controls on Argentine exchanges, the Federal Administration of Public Revenues also has cryptocurrency owners in its sights. The director of the BCRA, Miguel Pesce, stated that the mission of the Central Bank is to monitor crypto assets to avoid the country’s exchange laws.

Pesce previously claimed that they were studying the interoperability between banks and exchanges. However, the BCRA does not want cryptocurrency companies to enter that sector.

For that reason, the Argentine government asked cryptocurrency firms for information about users who move large amounts of money. That violates people’s privacy, one of the fundamental principles of the ecosystem.

As these companies have to provide information for the AFIP and the BCRA, they do not have many choices. Any document they present will have the nature of a sworn statement, which implies that they have everything to lose.

The Position of Exchanges Owners on Those Measures

The CEO of an Argentine exchange expressed that he sees a market that tends to be more strict and tight in preventing money laundering. However, he argued that he does not clearly understand the position of the banks or how they handle some policies of the BCRA.

That same person believes that they should not regulate against new technologies but rather promote them as they are beneficial to society. He expressed that he hopes that the BCRA will contribute to having an egalitarian market without banking pressure.

A new crypto bill could enter the National Congress before the end of the year. Previous initiatives did not come to fruition but could serve as the basis for regulation in this area.

Ethereum 2.0: Altair Update Succeeded with 99% of the Nodes on Board

Altair is the first update to Beacon Chain and the ultimate step leading to Ethereum’s full transition to a proof-of-stake (PoS) procedure.

The first Ethereum 2.0 update since the network got activated in December 2020 happened successfully this week.

As reported by various Ethereum developers through Twitter, the Altair update got successfully activated on Wednesday. This update is the first update to the Beacon Chain, the name given to the Ethereum 2.0 proof-of-stake (PoS) chain, since its release in December last year.

ETH 2.0 developers Preston Vanloon and Raul Jordan took to their personal Twitter accounts to let the community know that the update got completed.

Altair marks a significant step in Ethereum’s transition process from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus procedure to one of PoS, and this may be the last update before the Ethereum mainnet merge.

Altair, and the Changes it Brings

The update intends to bring the Beacon Chain with lightweight customer support, minor patches for incentives, accounting for idle leaks by the validator. The update also increases the severity of the reduction and clean-ups for the accounting of validator rewards.

Paul Hauner is the current developer for Altair on Lighthouse, an implementation of ETH 2.0. He recently clarified to Cointelegraph that the update now brings at least two new changes.

99% of Nodes Got Updated

The Altair update came as a hard fork, and it caused all validators on the network to update to stay offline. Anyone working in a Beacon node or a validator must update the client version to the new standard, or they could risk getting caught in an incompatible chain.

Fortunately, it seems that many validators have updated successfully. According to information that came from the Beacon Chain, there are currently 248,553 active validators and just under 2,000 inactive validators.

Vanloon highlighted in a tweet that the share initially dropped to 93.3% during the first epoch after the update. However, that figure quickly raised to around 95% and has since risen to 98.7%. Hauner assured Cointelegraph that currently, almost all validators are on board.

Validators that are not updated could not participate in the new consensus mechanism and will also face the risk of removal and paying penalties.

According to Hausner, those validators who didn’t get updated need to update and then reboot their nodes. They would start validating again once their node approaches the Altair chain.

 The Transition to PoS

The successful upgrade represents a vital step on the Ethereum project path and means that everything is going straight ahead for the transition to PoS. The final Ethereum 2.0 update, which will bypass the proof-of-work mechanism, might happen in February 2022.

Developer Ben Edgingtonhighlighted the importance of Altair in a blog post this month. He clarified that, representing the only Beacon Chain update before the merger, ensuring the 2022 schedule depended on the achievements of this step

The Price of Solana Could Exceed USD 250 Due to Its Rapid Growth

The interest from institutional investors could be behind the 494% growth of SOL in recent months. The increase in its market capitalization suggests that the cryptocurrency might become the next rival for ADA.

The value of Solana (SOL) has been facing resistance near its latest all-time high. However, its ecosystem of decentralized finance ecosystem and non-fungible tokens has had rapid growth. For that reason, the cryptocurrency could break the USD 250 barrier by the end of the year.

Solana is trading at around USD 197, and its daily trading volume is above USD 1.9 billion, according to CoinGecko.

The interest from institutional investors in SOL could be another crucial factor behind its significant 494% growth in recent months. For example, the cryptocurrency is the fourth biggest component of the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index Fund.

Besides, the current number of tweets that mention the SOL cryptocurrency has been 32% higher than the average in the last month. As Solana continues to grow, it will continue to be an alternative for DeFi and NFT apps.

The increase in the market capitalization of SOL has allowed the crypto asset to outperform XRP. Solana recently occupies the 6th position in the cryptocurrency ranking with a volume of approximately USD 59.3 million. Therefore, that suggests that the cryptocurrency might become the next rival for Cardano (ADA).

The TVL of Solana Reaches an All-Time High

The Total Value Locked on Deposits of DeFi projects built on the Solana network reached a new record of USD 13.3 billion. That happened at the same time as the price of SOL increased.

The largest DeFi project on the Solana network, Saber (SBR), is an automated market maker (AMM) protocol. It allows users to trade between stable pairs of assets on the platform.

Meanwhile, there are four DeFi projects whose TVL is above USD 1 billion. They include Raydium (USD 1.84 billion), Sunny (USD 1.67), Serum (USD 1.57), and Marinade Finance (USD 1.55).

Cardano Fails to Regain Its Bullish Trend

The price of Cardano remained locked in a big sideways move above USD 2.08 and resistance at USD 3.03. After that, it lost the immediate support level and dropped to USD 1.90.

ADA is trading at around USD 1,99 and has lost 7.8% in the last week, according to CoinGecko. Its market capitalization is approximately USD 63.955 million, which places it in the 5th position in the cryptocurrency ranking.

Technical Analysis of the Price of ADA

The daily Cardano candlestick chart shows how the price recently plummeted, while the market had its eyes on Shiba Inu. However, ADA reached support at USD 1.90 and now exhibits a good recovery.

In contrast to other altcoins, Cardano had not made any significant profits recently. Its price remained locked on a broad sideways move after experiencing a dominant bullish force. For that reason, it seemed that resistance would soon break it.

Solana and Cardano occupy the 6th and 5th position in the cryptocurrency ranking, respectively. The former has been gaining popularity in recent weeks, which might lead it to outpace the performance of ADA.

In Panama, Deputies Would Start a Debate on Laws to Regulate Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies

A subcommittee has ten days to show a report on the consultation. Many deputies introduced projects to regulate cryptocurrencies.

Deputies of the National Assembly of Panama will start a debate in a subcommittee, two bills for regulation of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

The Assembly on the social network highlighted through their official Twitter account that a sub-commission got created to unify criteria regarding regulative measures for the use of cryptocurrencies as payment methods and other vital details related to blockchain technology in Panama.

The working group must respond to the Trade and Economic Affairs Commission within ten business days with a report showing the conclusions of the discussions.

One of the projects that will get evaluated was the one presented by Deputy Cenobia Vargas. According to local media, during her speech in the Assembly, Cenobia highlighted that the law intends to spread cryptocurrencies as a means of payment in the Panamanian population.

In that sense, she warned that the one who does not adjust would stay. In her opinion, some people said they did not like WhatsApp but stated that now even her grandmother sends messages.

A BIll with Eight Chapters and 31 Articles to Regulate Cryptocurrencies

Vargas unveiled the bill last August. The document, which contains at least eight chapters and 31 articles, among other things, refers to tax issues, measures to counter money laundering, technical training, digital asset mining, and freedom for banks to build new business models with cryptocurrencies.

In Panama, there has been an attempt to include the issuance of cryptocurrencies from the regulatory point of view.

The most recent case was the project led by Deputy Gabriel Silva, which is a plan that will also become a discussion in the subcommittee. The legislator introduced a draft law to favor the regulation of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in that country last September.

The independent deputy of the Assembly of Panama, Gabriel Silva, introduced this Monday, September 6, a draft law for the regulation of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in that country.

Silva, who announced the news on Twitter, highlighted that the first goal of the law is quite simple; it intends to give certainty and legal security in Panama to crypto assets, such as cryptocurrencies.

On the other hand, besides attracting investors and entrepreneurs who focus on the digital economy, the proposed law intends to expand the number of financial services offered in Panama, according to the deputy.

In the explanatory statement on the project, Silva points out that this law would encourage financial inclusion. Panama has only 46.5% of its population with transactional bank accounts. This percentage is lower than the regional average of 54.4% and much lower than the global average of 68% ”.

Silva explained that her main goal with this project was to give certainty and legal security in Panama to crypto-assets and attract investors and entrepreneurs who focus on the digital economy.

According to US Regulators, Banks Should Trade Bitcoin

The FDIC believes that banks must work with cryptocurrencies or the activity will continue to grow without them. Regulators believe that offering cryptocurrency banking services is a rude operation due to its volatility.

A group of banking regulators in the United States of America is trying to create a clear path for banks and customers who want to hold bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Jelena McWilliams, the current president of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), talked about the subject at the Milken Institute Global Conference.

As the Reuters agency found today, the insurance expert expressed at the conference that cryptocurrencies could get included in each person’s bank balances as traditional assets. She even affirms that these assets could begin to get used as collateral for loans.

There are many non-bank companies and decentralized finance platforms offering loans with cryptocurrencies. One of these companies is the Spanish company BitBase.

The offering of loans is a service under constant evolution that, according to the official, banking institutions are missing out on by not offering it.

The Banks Need to Define their Rules

The official warned that the banking industry must define clear rules on the custody of cryptocurrencies. In this way, users could facilitate the trading of these assets. McWilliams also stated that banks should enter this space as long as they adequately manage and mitigate risk.

McWilliams notes that the biggest challenge is choosing what type of capital and liquidity treatment to assign to these high-volatility assets. Once these parameters get defined, the banking industry will be able to protect the cryptocurrencies of its clients. These defined parameters, in turn, would allow federal agents to regulate the activity.

According to McWilliams, Banks are Missing out on Crypto Trading

During the conference, which took place in the city of Beverly Hills in California, McWilliams said that he not only desires to establish a clear picture for banks to use cryptocurrencies. She also warned that investments in these assets would continue to grow outside of the banking industry if they do not manage to adapt to the situation.

Precisely the spokeswoman for the FDIC, who is a member of the Republican Party, adds that without their contribution as intermediaries, federal regulators will not be able to control it, something that he believes should happen.

In May, these statements show the result of the union of United States government agencies to regulate cryptocurrencies.

The initiative got proposed by Michael Hsu, recently appointed as director of the OCC. In a virtual conference of the Committee on Financial Services of the House of Representatives of the United States of America, Hsu explained his thoughts on the fragmented regulations that have received approval so far for crypto assets.

Since then, the FDIC has worked closely with the Federal Reserve and the country’s Office of Currency Control to achieve this goal.

According to a Study, Bitcoin Remains Concentrated in the Hands of a few Investors and Miners

The addresses of 10,000 top investors hold a third of the total wealth of Bitcoin. The concentration is even higher in mining, which could be a security risk for the network.

The controversial discussion about the centralization of the total wealth of Bitcoin is still blowing its war horn. As various studies have already highlighted in the past, a recent report suggests that the supply of bitcoins remains concentrated in a few hands.

An investigation led by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found that the top 10,000 individual Bitcoin investors hold about a third of the total coins in circulation.

The study, reported by Bloomberg in the first instance, shows that this group owns at least 5.5 million bitcoins. This amount represents almost a third of the 18 million mined coins so far.

Bitcoin has a limited supply of 21 million tokens, of which 18.8 million have been mined and represent the circulating supply of the first cryptocurrency, according to current data from CoinMarketCap.

10,000 Individual Wallets Possess 1/3 of the Total BTC

The matter of Bitcoin concentration has been a controversial discussion among the digital currency community.

Even after Bitcoin has been branded by advocates as a decentralized financial mechanism accessible to all without prejudice of gender, race, nationality, etc.  The discussions had shown clear reflections on the subjects behind the addresses with Bitcoins and how to manage them.

However, it has been a very sneaky topic to tackle because many of the massive addresses do not typically represent individual investors but rather exchanges or entities that own Bitcoin on behalf of third parties. Likewise, it is also problematic to separate the addresses belonging to the same individual or entity.

Using a method to differentiate the addresses of individual investors and exchanges, NBER researchers found that, by the end of 2020, personal wallets controlled around 8.5 million bitcoins while entities accounted for 5.5 million coins.

The study also found that the top 1,000 individual investors controlled about 3 million bitcoins out of the 8.5 million at the top 10,000 investors. The concentration among individual investors could be even higher than the results in the data analysis.

On the other hand, the researchers highlighted that the concentration on Bitcoin mining, the process of mining new coins, is too deep.

Bitcoin Mining Concentration is Even Higher

According to NBER, only 10% of the top cryptocurrency miners are responsible for 90% of Bitcoin’s mining capacity. Meanwhile, the data indicates that only 0.1% (around 50 miners) control 50% of the mining capacity.

The curious thing about the study is that it found that this concentration might vary according to the prices of the cryptocurrency, tending to reach high peaks with increases and to decrease when a solid price falls.

These figures are alarming for the security of the Bitcoin network. A high concentration of the network’s mining power could make the blockchain vulnerable to a 51% attack.
