Hackers Extracted at Least $182 million from Stablecoin Protocol Beanstalk

The hacker managed to launder most of it through Tornado Cash. However, $250,000 of the stolen funds got sent to an aid address based in Ukraine.

An Ethereum-based stablecoin protocol, Beanstalk went through a hacking attack on Sunday that extracted more than $180 million in various digital assets.

Blockchain security firm PeckShield first reported the hack via its Twitter account on Sunday. The attack got initially estimated to have extracted at least $80 million from the network. However, a later report from the firm highlighted that the total loss was $182 million.

Reports suggest that the attack came to effect using a quick loan, flash loan, and a malicious governance proposal.

What Could Have Happened?

According to decentralized finance (DeFi) auditor group BlockSec, the malicious attacker created two enhancement proposals for the network on April 16, specifically BIP-18 and BIP-19, to withdraw part of the Beanstalk funds and donate them to the Ukrainian government.

The presentation got followed by a quick lending attack that allowed the attacker to seize the majority of the votes in the Beanstalk government to pass the proposals.

According to Cointelegraph, the hacker acquired $1 billion in quick loans from the Aave protocol detected in the stable coins DAI, USDCoin (USDC), and Tether (USDT). It then used these currencies to collect enough assets to control 79% of the governance and pass its proposals.

A flash loan is an unsecured loan popular in DeFi that must get implemented and paid within a single block. While hackers have often used this tool to exploit security vulnerabilities in protocols, in the case of Beanstalk, the smart contracts and governance mechanism behaved as designed.

The Attacker Sent Money to Ukraine

The hack reportedly let the hacker control at least $80 million worth of ETH and BEAN, the protocol’s native stable coin. The rest of the lost funds were in the form of liquidity connected to STALK, the governance token of the protocol.

The market for BEAN, Beanstalk’s stable coin that keeps parity with the US dollar, crumbled down shortly after the attack happened. According to CoinGecko, the stable coin is down close to 90%, ultimately losing its attachment to the dollar.

The attacker followed through on the part of his initial proposal, as some $250,000 of the stolen funds would have been sent to a USDC aid address in Ukraine, PeckShield revealed. Meanwhile, much of the extracted currencies got laundered through Tornado Cash, a mixing protocol that allows private transactions.

The news arrived just weeks after another multi-million dollar hacking attack took effect. In March, the Ronin Network sidechain, headquarters to the renowned game Axie Infinity, suffered a hacking that made the platform lose at least USD 600 million or more.

Reports also suggested that the attackers migrated considerable funds to Tornado Cash. US authorities detected the North Korean hacker group called Lazarus, as more recently responsible for the attack.

Man Got Accused in New York for Operating Bitcoin ATMs in Laundromats to Attract Criminals

0

The 46 Bitcoin ATM operator camouflaged its business from the public light, operating it hidden in laundromats.

Bitcoin ATMs have increased their activity year after year. There are already 36,728 active ATMs as of today, growing by more than 18 daily, according to data from CoinATMRadar. Of these ATMs, around 90% operate in the United States of America, while the vast majority of Latin America is far behind.

For many, ATMs are a great benefit and an advantage for purchasing digital assets, even though the fees are a bit higher. However, for some people, they are ideal devices for use by people hiding funds from the law.

In January, in the United States of America, the authorities warned about Bitcoin ATMs in illicit activities. A Bitcoin ATM operator got spotted in New York for allegedly leading illegal activities that attract criminals.

 Illegal Procedures In Laundries

The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. expressed that Robert Taylor got accused of carrying out an illegal Bitcoin ATM business that he traded to individuals involved in criminal activity.

According to the District Attorney, in 2017 and 2018, the 35-year-old turned $5.6 million cash into bitcoin while asking for a 10% to 20% fee.

Taylor got accused of having control over multiple money transmission businesses without a license, criminal fraud in the third degree, and bringing a false tool to carry out fraud.

An Analysis highlighted that at least $5.6 million or even more cash got housed at Taylor’s Bitcoin ATMs between September 2017 and November 2018. More than $590,000 in fees got received, and at least $160,000 got housed in bank accounts.

However, Taylor only revealed an amount registered at $3,000 on incomes based on tax returns and a loss of $140,000 on her 2018 tax returns.

In addition, Taylor’s business did not have a money transmission license, permission or a virtual currency business approval issued by the New York Department of Financial Services necessary to carry out these activities in the state. Taylor is also not licensed by the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement platform.

The attorney leading the case explained that Robert Taylor implemented extreme measures to keep his bitcoin ATM business as camouflaged as possible to seduce users who would pay tons of money to carry out anonymous activities.

FTC Alerts on ATM Scam

The United States Federal Trade Commission launched an alert on Monday about a new form of a cryptocurrency scam that takes advantage of ATMs (also called kiosks).

The authority expressed that the attackers usually pose as government officials, law enforcement officers, or employees of public companies to request funds. The scam includes several factors: a spoof, a QR code, and a cryptocurrency ATM. Impostors can also reach vulnerable sites like dating apps to pose potential romantic partners or trick victims by advertising a fake prize.

The scammers ask them to withdraw cash and go to an ATM. They then tell the victim to purchase digital coins at the ATM and send the victim a QR to transfer the funds in crypto to the attackers.

Metamask Alerted Apple Users about an iCloud Phishing Campaign

0

One user revealed that he lost more than half a million dollars from his Metamask wallet after receiving Apple’s alleged password reset request.

Popular Ethereum wallet Metamask alerts its iPhone, Mac, and iPad users about potential phishing attacks using Apple’s iCloud service.

The ConsenSys-owned wallet provider posted a tweet thread on Sunday warning users that they could risk losing their funds if their Apple password is “not strong enough.”

The company explained that the window for possible attacks relies on how the encrypted passwords, called Metamask vaults, get automatically uploaded to Apple’s cloud service unless the iCloud supportive feature gets disabled.

This automatic feature could ultimately result in data theft through a phishing attack. If a user’s iCloud account gets attacked, all of their linked digital asset wallet passwords could also suffer the same consequences.

User Lost USD $650,000 from his Metamask

In the tweet thread, the company explained to users how they could disable automatic iCloud support for Metamask. To apply the configuration, they must go to “Settings> Profile> iCloud> Manage storage> Backups” on their devices.

In a phishing attack, a term that refers to the sport of fishing, attackers emulate a trusted entity, website, or application to extract passwords and extract currencies from users who enter the fake site believing that it got trusted enough to carry out financial operations there.

The warning arrived after a non-fungible token (NFT) collector revealed a loss registered at $650,000 in assets and collectibles housed in his Metamask. The user identified as “Domenic Iacovone” expressed on Twitter that he had received many text messages and an alleged call from Apple asking him to reset his Apple ID password.

The victim brought a six-digit identification code to prove ownership of the Apple account, which the malicious actors then used to enter their Metamask and extract the funds. He explained that his wallet had many NFTs from the famous Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) collection and digital asset funds.

Reasons to be Alert of Apple Imitators

The founder of Dope NFT, nicknamed “Snake” on Twitter, explained that “MetaMask saves the opening phrase file to your iCloud.” In a thread of tweets, he also unveiled some details about how the campaign carries out its activity and alerted his more than 250,000 followers.

The attackers asked, through a series of messages, for a password reset intended for the victim’s Apple ID. Right after achieving the 2FA code, they proceeded to take over the Apple ID and enter iCloud; this action granted them complete access to the victim’s MetaMask.

The victim intended to give at least a $100,000 reward for help to get his funds back. Iacovone also seemed frustrated after Metamask posted a warning; he stressed that the company should give users more details about how the app develops its functions and features.

Changpeng Zhao Observes Some Positive Changes in Regulatory Discussions

The Binance CEO said the tide was turning on the regulation of cryptocurrencies, whose discussions have gone positive. Zhao believes that France has an open-minded government that could help develop laws that favor cryptocurrencies.

The bosses of various leading crypto firms, like Changpeng Zhao, think that governments have a more positive approach toward cryptocurrencies. However, they say that they do not lose hope and are optimistic about the future of digital assets.

Zhao, the CEO of Binance, told the CNBC television channel that the tide was turning on cryptocurrencies. He believes that the regulatory discussions about crypto assets have changed from negative to positive.

Other renowned personalities in the crypto industry share the viewpoints of Changpeng Zhao. Nicolas Cary, the co-founder of Blockchain.com, stated that the regulatory landscape is accelerating quickly worldwide.

The US and the UK Announce Changes in Cryptocurrency Regulation

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced measures to bring a regulatory oversight to the emerging crypto market. Both countries seek to become leaders in innovation with blockchain technology and investment in cryptocurrencies.

In that same vein, the UK government plans to recognize stablecoins as a valid method for payment. Likewise, the Finance Minister of that European country, Rishi Sunak, requested the Royal Mint to create a non-fungible token (NFT).

Nicolas Cary commented that the United Kingdom could be a dark horse in this whole situation. After withdrawing from the European Union (Brexit), they have to make a political and strategic decision.

Zhao Considers that France is Progressive about Cryptocurrencies

Changpeng Zhao said that France is a very progressive country concerning crypto assets. He believes that it has an open-minded government that could help develop regulations that favor cryptocurrencies.

Likewise, the CEO of Binance sees France as another country in a positive context. In other words, he considers it very open and welcoming toward cryptocurrencies and much more advanced in their understanding.

Arthur Breitman, the co-Founder of Tezos (XTZ), commented on the dark side of the cryptocurrency industry. He said regulators are taking money laundering and other illegal transactions seriously. He does not think they have a warm and fuzzy feeling about it but will have a conservative bias.

However, the crypto world still has a long way before reaching mainstream acceptance. Furthermore, the future of the cryptocurrency industry will largely depend on the approaches that different global regulators take.

Ripple Thinks the US Is Falling Behind in Legal Matters

Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, considers that not all regulators agree with the rapid growth of cryptocurrencies. For example, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken Ripple, Garlinghouse, and co-founder Chris Larsen to court.

The SEC alleges that Ripple illegally sold over USD 1 billion worth of the XRP cryptocurrency. The government agency thinks that XRP should fall into the security category, which Ripple disputes.

For that reason, Garlington has told entrepreneurs thinking about building a crypto or blockchain company not to do it in the United States. He considers the lack of clarity might put them at risk for the same kind of lawsuit the SEC brought against Ripple.

Bitcoin Is Non-Partisan, Apolitical, and Decentralized, but US Senator Ted Cruz Disagrees

Bitcoin allows minorities to enjoy economic freedom and countries to avoid sanctions, proving that it is non-partisan, apolitical, and decentralized. More people will try to use BTC for political purposes, but they will not find it easy to achieve that goal.

US Republican Senator Ted Cruz confirmed his support for Bitcoin (BTC) at a recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event. However, he criticized his political opponents, from Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth Warren to the Chinese Communist Party. He said his antagonists are against Bitcoin because they want to control financial freedom and civil liberty.

Cruz thinks many politicians will try to politicize Bitcoin, although it is an apolitical asset not fitting into the right or the left.

Nobody Will Find It Easy to Change the Behavior of Bitcoin

The speech of Cruz is full of partisan elements, but Bitcoin is not against the left or the right and is apolitical. Likewise, it has a decentralized nature, implying that no political or institutional entity can alter its operation.

In the book The Blocksize Wars, Jonathan Bier explained that Bitcoin activists and organizations have failed to modify the Bitcoin code over the years.

In 2016, the so-called Bitcoin Classic proposal sought to increase the size of Bitcoin blocks. However, its adoption failed despite the support of leading institutional players like Brian Armstrong from Coinbase, Jihan Wu from Bitmain, and Roger Ver from Bitcoin.com.

It Is Incoherent to Say that Bitcoin Has a Political Side

The politicization of Bitcoin is philosophically incoherent and separate from the evidence of its use.

During the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in 2013, some protesters heralded Bitcoin as financial freedom. BLM activists conceived various NFT art projects to raise awareness of victims of racial murder and police reform.

Various authors and experts have made efforts to familiarize Afro-Americans and minority communities with the potential of Bitcoin. They want those people to know that it can empower them while the current financial system excludes them.

In 2017, credit card platforms and major payment platforms excluded far-right protesters from the white supremacist organization Unite the Right. Their supporters also turned to cryptocurrencies and raised 15 BTC in donations, equivalent to USD 60,000.

Even North Korea and Iran use cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to ease the impact of sanctions. The former has reportedly stolen around USD 395 million worth of cryptocurrencies to finance the development of nuclear weapons.

Bitcoin allows minorities to enjoy economic freedom, and countries turn to it to avoid sanctions. It is neutral as nobody forces people to use it, but they choose to do it voluntarily.

Exchange-Traded Funds Could Politicize the Use of Bitcoin

The growing adoption of Bitcoin has led financial institutions to create products like BTC-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Since politically-captured financial institutions regulate those entities and consumers purchase those assets, BTC may remain trapped in a biased market.

However, investors can be optimistic about BTC, as nobody can arbitrarily manipulate it, unlike fiat money. Besides, buying Bitcoin on an exchange is easier and cheaper than buying gold or other assets requiring physical storage.

US Senator Ted Cruz is not the only politician that has thought of appropriating Bitcoin for partisan purposes. As BTC gains ground worldwide, more people will try to harness it for their political ends. However, those familiar with the history of decentralized cryptocurrencies know that nobody will find it easy to achieve that goal.

The Institutional Investment of Bitcoin is back. Will this Situation Impact the Price?

Bitcoin (BTC) flow from cryptocurrency exchanges to cold wallets is increasing. There are more whales with 1,000 bitcoins or more and are still thirsty.

According to analyst Willy Woo, institutional investment in bitcoin (BTC) is back in his latest report on the market for the first of the digital assets. In the last three days of last week, there was a necessary amount of spot purchases of bitcoin.

Woo expressed in the report that many coins migrated from exchanges into cold storage. This volume of BTC coming out of sales is now at record levels again.

From Woo’s point of view, the demand from significant investors for BTC is anything but declining. This situation is contrary to what was happening in previous weeks when public and private institutions seemed to be distancing themselves from bitcoin as the crypto environment suffered due to geopolitical causes.

Institutional Whales in Hoarding Mode

Woo highlighted in the report, a chart showing increasing demand from big bitcoin holders taking over all the coins coming off exchanges.

Woo also expressed that while spot bitcoin buying has returned to the market by large institutions, this is not an event linked to the demand from futures markets.

According to Woo, the market is in an extended accumulation band, noting that the uptick in spot buying combined with further accumulation should push the bitcoin price.

The Price of Bitcoin

The exit of bitcoin from the exchanges is a bullish sign, considering that the price of the pioneer of the digital assets is the result of supply and demand. As soon as a large amount of collection continuously flows into cold wallets, the price of BTC can start to rise.

Large institutions have been purchasing bitcoin, such as the case of professional investment funds and hedge funds, but also insurers and pension funds.

In parallel with Willy Woo, CryptoQuant CEO Ki-Young Ju showed off a chart on Twitter a couple of days ago. He reveals that 30,000 BTC was leaving Coinbase Pro, indicating that large companies, such as Tesla or MicroStrategy, might be buying BTC.

Institutions willing to buy bitcoin coincide with signals from the Joe Biden administration that regulation will remain crypto-friendly. It got suggested in the acclaimed executive order, but because of how the Secretary highlighted Satoshi Nakamoto’s creation.

To verify whether these large movements of bitcoin leaving the exchanges correspond to institutional purchases, we will have to wait for the end of the second quarter of the year, when public companies disclose their balances.
