CEO of Goldman Sachs Bank Meets with CEO of FTX in the Caribbean to Discuss Contribution between the Two Entities

0

Sam Bankman-Fried and David Solomon talked about Goldman Sachs’ possible advice to FTX in conversations with US regulators and a potential IPO.

With the suggestive title “Goldman Sachs sought to woo FTX in Caribbean meeting,” the Financial Times reported about the meeting between the FTX exchange CEO and the banking giant’s CEO somewhere on the paradisiacal Caribbean coast.

Although the matters under discussion by both directors are still veiled, many media outlets have suggested that the meeting could get described as historic and lead to future joint decisions of both entities.

According to a report led by Coindesk, FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried agreed on a meeting with Goldman Sachs CEO, David Solomon, in the Caribbean area to set on debate possible contributions between both entities.

According to people close to the situation, the Financial Times reported that the two CEOs discussed Goldman Sachs likely advising FTX, which got a value registered at $32 billion in January, on future funding rounds and leading a role in a possible initial public offering (IPO).

FTX Expects the Controller Response

For its part, FTX issued a proposal with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in March, which would allow it to settle its derivatives clients’ trades. The regulator will give the proposal an informal hearing on May 23.

The two directors also argued about collaborating on the market making in crypto trading. Market making involves setting, purchasing, and selling prices for certain assets to make trading and liquidity easier.

CoinDesk’s discussions represent the increasing interest major financial institutions are taking in the digital asset industry after Goldman Sachs led the IPO of crypto exchange Coinbase last year.

In March, the bank made its first Bitcoin over-the-counter (OTC) operation. This information got revealed by various news outlets, including CNBC and CoinDesk. According to reports, Goldman issued a Bitcoin-linked tool called a ‘non-deliverable option’ alongside digital asset finance company Galaxy Digital. The device is a type of cash-settled cryptocurrency options trade.

An OTC trade, short for Over-The-Counter, refers to trading securities through a network of brokers rather than an exchange network. This over-the-counter transaction may include investment tools listed on the stock exchange or not; in this case, it is a cryptocurrency product.

The move represents a notable advance in the development of the cryptocurrency market and the participation of institutional investors, in part due to the nature of OTC operations and the fact that it represents a higher risk for the bank, as highlighted by CNBC. Galaxy co-chairman Damien Vanderwilt added that the banking giant’s move also denoted market maturity.

In April, the chairman stated that he was also ready to make these OTC trades with Ethereum. This information highlights how the bank got increasingly immersed in the crypto world.

There Are Three Financial Literacy Questions Canadian Bitcoiners Cannot Answer

0

“In particular, Canadians who were young, male, employed, had a college degree, high household income, and relatively low financial literacy, were more likely to own Bitcoin.”

A Bank of Canada study has found that Bitcoiners are on average less financially literate than non-BTC holders are.

The study used data from four years of annual surveys from 2016 to 2020, and sample sizes range from 1,987 to 3,893 respondents.

The Bank of Canada’s full study is titled “Bitcoin Awareness, Ownership and Use: 2016-20” and was released on April 19. A key conclusion of the study was that:

“Bitcoin owners showed greater knowledge about the Bitcoin network than non-owners, although they scored lower on questions assessing financial knowledge.”

However, the financial literacy test found its bases on just three multiple-choice questions focused on interest rates, inflation, and understanding stocks and mutual funds. The three questions on Bitcoin focused on supply, the digital ledger, and whether or not the network is government-backed.

Given the limited number of questions, the idea that they can accurately measure someone’s financial knowledge is debatable. On the other hand, the questions are quite easy.

Researchers from the Bank of Canada highlighted that the “interplay between financial literacy and crypto-asset market participation” is important to explore, as there are many risks associated with the sector, which users can avoid through further education.

Bitcoiners

The data reveals that, over the four years, the average number of Bitcoin users fell into the demographic of young men between the ages of 18 and 34, with men accounting for at least twice as many as women each year. The gender gap has been a longstanding and widely reported topic in the short history of the cryptocurrency space.

“In general, the marginal effects are consistent with the descriptive results already discussed. We find that the probability of owning Bitcoin decreases with being female, older, and unemployed, but increases with education,” the report says.

As for a specific type of Bitcoin holder, the report suggests that educated young men who scored low in financial literacy but earned more than $70,000 were the most typical type:

“In particular, Canadians who were young, male, employed, had a college degree, high household income, and relatively low financial literacy were more likely to own Bitcoin.”

Non-Bitcoiners

At the other end of the spectrum, those who scored high on financial literacy were “more likely to be aware of Bitcoin, but less likely to own it.”

The reasons offered in the study for not owning Bitcoin that was most surveyed were not necessarily anti-Bitcoin; lack of understanding and satisfactory current payment methods were the main responses.

After those two reasons, the next highest reason each year was that respondents do not “trust a private currency that is not backed by a government.”

“We found that between 2018 and 2020, the level of Bitcoin awareness and ownership among Canadians remained stable: almost 90% of the population knew about Bitcoin, while only 5% owned it.”

Cointelegraph reported an individual survey from this study dubbed the “Cash Alternative Survey”, which suggested that Canadians with a lower level of financial understanding might be twice as likely to invest in cryptocurrencies.

A Bitcoiner Describes the Terror in Which Users in Shanghai Live

0

Certain governments are using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to impose more controls on Bitcoin. There is a struggle between those who want to accumulate more power and those who want to decentralize it.

In early 2020, many users in Shanghai, terrified by the worst quarantine ever, followed the situation on social networks. The shock that this city gave the world did not seem enough, as many hungry people demanded their most basic rights.

Strict measures sought to decrease COVID-19 cases by eliminating the free movement of people around the city. However, some people were insensitive to that new situation, as if it did not matter.

Now the situation looks more controversial as the Internet allows real-time access to the pain of others through images of war and death. Many seem to have forgotten the war between Russia and Ukraine, in which many children die in their homes.

The callous and unconcerned seem to be blind to another virus that has sought to eliminate human rights for centuries. It is about authoritarianism, control, and power, which have kept many generations under their yoke.

The formation of an increasingly digitized world intensifies that situation to unsuspected levels. The citizens of Shanghai suffer from that disease, which keeps them captive in their homes while also stalking the communities.

It Is Crucial to Take Care of the Fate of the World

As this virus swarms more strongly, it is relevant to talk about Shanghai from the perspective of a bitcoiner. The topic is that of the principles that founded Bitcoin and made more people enter its community.

There is currently a struggle of forces that could determine the future of freedom. States strive to exert greater power over the people, such as the governments of China, Canada, and Russia.

Those governments tell people where to put their money, who to support, where to go, and who to meet. In other words, they seek to learn more about the private life of citizens to make decisions on it.

Social distancing helps protect the most vulnerable people, but killing pets and separating parents and children is unacceptable. Furthermore, converting entire buildings into temporary hospitals causes pain for those who have not had access to essential services for over a month.

A state should not affect the lives and rights of people, but that has been the history of the world for centuries. However, there is resistance among citizens toward those authoritarian schemes since humans also demand their freedom.

In an increasingly globalized world with access to the Internet, it is harder to stop the voices and discontent of citizens. That sentiment led to creating and strengthening Bitcoin as both a currency and an ideology.

The principles of Bitcoin oppose authoritarianism, as it returns control over finances to citizens. More people are demanding greater privacy, freedom, and shares of representative power, which they can find in the system embodied by Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 39,366 and has accumulated a 5.3% loss in the last 24 hours. Its trading volume is above USD 49.30 billion, and its market capitalization is approximately USD 748.70 billion.

Bitcoin Outperforms Various Major Traditional Wall Street Stocks despite the Drop in Its Price

Facing an 11% decline in the Bitcoin price in 2022, MicroStrategy and Square are down by 21% and 33%, respectively. The Nasdaq index has dropped by 15% so far this year, 4 points below the value of BTC.

Analyst Will Clemente said Bitcoin (BTC) outperforms traditional stocks like PayPal, Facebook, and the Nasdaq index despite the decline in its price. He explained that Shopify and Netflix have dropped by up to 60%, while the returns of BTC have decreased by 11.6%.

The conflict due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has affected traditional stocks and the price of Bitcoin. Likewise, the Federal Reserve rate increases starting in March could lead to at least five more rises in 2022.

The stocks included in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indexes have dropped less than Bitcoin by 7.16% and 3.76%, respectively. However, the technology shares of the Nasdaq index have fallen by 15.56%, four points more than BTC.

If Bitcoin, which fluctuates at around USD 40,000, continues to rise, the outlook for the cryptocurrency may be better than for traditional shares. Of course, that will depend on the behavior of those users that buy BTC in the coming days and months.

Bitcoin Is a Better Investment than Firms Investing in It

In the bullish stage of Bitcoin that reached its maximum in November 2021, the stock market favored the companies that had invested in Bitcoin. MicroStrategy and firms linked to Bitcoin mining led those firms whose respective shares experienced growth in their price along with BTC. With the correction of the value of BTC, the companies associated with Bitcoin have suffered more severe setbacks in percentages than the price of BTC.

The Wall Street Journal indicated that companies linked to Bitcoin have lost up to 60% this year. Bitcoin and Coinbase have lost 11% and 42%, respectively, while Riot Blockchain has dropped by 34% in the same period. The market capitalization of publicly-traded companies investing in Bitcoin went from USD 100 billion to USD 40 billion.

In August 2020, MicroStrategy started the trend of investing in Bitcoin, which it still does, as part of its strategic reserve. Since the beginning of 2021, the company has fallen by 21.18%, almost twice as much as Bitcoin. Similarly, Block (formerly known as Square), a company founded by Jack Dorsey, has lost 33.41% so far this year although.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 39,366 and has accumulated a 5.3% loss in the last 24 hours. Its trading volume is above USD 49.30 billion, and its market capitalization is about USD 748.70 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Even though the price of BTC is undergoing a bearish trend, it has performed better than traditional Wall Street stocks. Besides, experts consider that investing in the crypto asset would yield higher returns in the long term than company shares. Carlos Maslatón predicted that its price might reach USD 100,000, and Paolo Ardoino believes it will become the ideal financial structure.

Optimism-Based Projects Soar on Token Launch Rumors

“We are nearing the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next – one driven by community ownership and governance,” Optimism noted.

The prices of native tokens from multiple projects employing Ethereum’s layer 2 scaling solution, Optimism, are up around 20% amid rumors that the network will soon release a token and make it available to the community. .

Optimism is a layer 2 scaling solution that uses Optimistic Rollups to process a large number of transactions outside of the Ethereum Blockchain. The project claims that it can operate smart contracts between five and 500 times cheaper than Ethereum’s layer 1.

According to DefiLlama, the platform currently has $496.47 million in Total Value Locked (TVL) from 30 different projects using it at scale, such as Synthetix, UniSwap, Stargate Finance, and Perpetual Protocol, to name a few.

Optimism’s Viewpoint

Rumors of a possible distribution of tokens to users of related projects started circulating on Twitter earlier today after Optimism posted a blog post titled “A New Chapter” recapping the performance of the project since its launch early last year and outlined its plans for the future.

The team highlighted major milestones from the past 12 months, including $17.4 billion in transaction volume, $24.5 million in revenue, and $1.1 billion in gas fee savings.

On Twitter, @optimismPBC posted the following, “Optimism’s story so far, by the numbers:  Saved $1.1B in gas fees, On-boarded 300k unique addresses, Secured $900M of value, Facilitated $17.4B in TX volume, Generated $24.5M in revenue. A new chapter is near. Let’s take a minute to reflect on the path so far.”

Although Optimism did not directly state anything about launching a native token, the curious did highlight the last section of the post, which outlines a new stage of development that the community will drive. In respect to this, Optimism declared the following:

“The network has grown by leaps and bounds, and it only gets better day by day. Our baby has learned to walk, and it is almost time to run. We are nearing the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next: one driven by community ownership and governance.”

Reactions to Optimism’s Posts

Commenting on the wording of the post, self-styled “master launch hunter” “OlimpioCrypto” suggested to his 7,164 Twitter followers that Synthetix (SNX) could be the token to watch for potential launches, as Synthetix was the first protocol to start to work with Optimism.

“The Optimism team started working with Synthetix before any other protocol. SNX holders, there might be a gift in store for you. Keeping tokens staked might be the right move,” they wrote.

A similar account called “defi_airdrops” also pointed to other popular projects on Optimism like Hop Protocol, Lyra Finance, and the Polynomial Protocol.

Although not all Optimism-related tokens are pumping, over the last 24 hours SNX, Lyra Finance (LYRA), and Synapse (SYN) have all seen substantial increases in value.

According to CoinGecko data, SYN is up 26.2% to $3.37, SNX is up 21.5% to $6.18, and LYRA is up 18.4% to $0.24.

Based on the data from DefiLlama, Synthetix – the largest platform on Optimism – has seen its TVL gain 13.4% in the last 24 hours to reach some $203.3 million, suggesting that investors may be running to stake SNX in anticipation of an Optimism announcement.

Coinbase Announces Beta of Its Socially Participating NFT Marketplace

More than 8.4 million email addresses were on the waiting list for Coinbase NFT, and the project said it would be available to everyone over the age of 18 “in the coming weeks.”

Coinbase’s non-fungible token marketplace has entered beta more than six months after the company announced it planned to open a waiting list for the site.

According to a post on Wednesday, the cryptocurrency exchange said “Coinbase NFT” beta testers would be able to create profiles online, as well as buy and sell non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. In a press briefing on Tuesday, Coinbase VP of Product and Ecosystem Sanchan Saxena hinted that the marketplace design would be a cross between a social media platform and other NFT marketplaces like OpeaSea.

Saxena’s Claims

“While it is true that the buying and selling of NFTs is an important part of the current ecosystem, what we have learned from talking to many customers and creators is that there is more to buying and selling,” Saxena said. “There’s the community aspect.”

According to Saxena, the platform will have opportunities for engagement between users and creators. Like many social media platforms, Coinbase NFTs will allow users to follow the profiles of creators and others, comment on artwork, and monitor a personalized feed to discover new NFTs based on engagement and purchases.

As for comment moderation, Saxena said the platform would work on the principle that users and legislators decide “the law of the land.” According to the Coinbase executive, the staff is “not in the business of judging what is right, what is wrong, as long as it is legal.”

Coinbase Announcements

While the market is in beta, Coinbase said there would be no transaction fees for a limited time, and the exchange has set out to reduce gas fees for Ether (ETH) transactions by partnering with 0x Labs. Users can choose their own self-custody wallets or the Coinbase Wallet.

According to Coinbase, the exchange planned to open up access to the NFT market based on users’ position on the waitlist, with the platform available to everyone over the age of 18 “in the coming weeks.” Additionally, Coinbase said that it planned to “decentralize more features” like user feedback in the future.

At the time of publication, more than 8.4 million email addresses were on the waiting list for Coinbase NFT. The cryptocurrency exchange reported that it had more than 89 million verified users trading $547 billion in quarterly volume, should the exchange’s liquidity spill over into its NFT venture.

Coinbase is one of the few crypto exchanges trying to get into NFT sales. Major cryptocurrency exchange Binance launched an NFT market in June 2021 with the aim of minimizing the cost of transactions, and FTX and its US subsidiary introduced a market in September that allows users to trade NFTs cross-chain on the Solana and Ethereum Blockchains.

According to data from DappRadar, OpenSea ranked first among NFT markets with a volume of approximately $130 million in 24 hours. However, the recent sales performance of an NFT from Jack Dorsey’s genesis tweet suggests the market may be slowing: one user bought the tokenized image in 2021 for $2.9 million, while the highest bid at the time of publication is approximately $32,000.
