According to Bloomberg, Bitcoin Will Continue to Surpass Traditional Currencies

In the last two and a half years, the return of digital assets has increased 374 times. Commodities have grown 59 times in earnings, and bonds have fallen ten times.

According to Bloomberg Intelligence, in the first decade of 2020, bitcoin and digital assets will continue to surpass commodities, Nasdaq-listed stocks, and even US Treasury bills.

In a tweet revealed on Monday, Bloomberg presents that the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index (BGCI), a weighted index that includes bitcoin and five other digital assets, has returned seven times higher than the traditional assets that got for two years.

The index includes energy (30.43%), grains (22.44%), industrial metals (17.53%), and precious metals (15.62%), among others. The Bloomberg Nasdaq Composite Index, on the other hand, observed a visible improvement in the weighting of the Nasdaq 100 stocks, in which technology stocks played a vital role, registered at 51%, consumer services at 16%, health at 7.7%, and the financial area covering at least 7.4%.

All the highlighted variables got positioned at the same starting point, at the beginning of 2020, so their relative increase rate can be subject to technical comparisons. The superiority that digital assets presented has been pretty particular in the last 29 months, except for little moments between March and May 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic got revealed.

In April and November 2021, the highest performance peaks of digital currencies took effect, in which the BGCI showed increases of up to 1,300 times compared to January 1, 2020.

Commodities increased 59 times in the period highlighted by the reports, while the 100 companies gathered in the Nasdaq index show a joint evolution of 42 times. In contrast, the Bloomberg index of US treasury bonds is the only one presenting losses of at least ten times its value in early 2020.

Although the current bearish season started in November 2021, that year ended up with bitcoin returns registered at 60%, which increased by two of the performance of traditional currencies.

According to Bloomberg, the evolution of bitcoin returns can display comparisons against a vast list of sectors such as energy, bonds, and the S&P 500; bitcoin even outperforms a vast majority of conventional currencies.

Since the beginning of last year, the price of bitcoin has shown a growing correlation with traditional assets, as reported in this medium. Recently, the correlation of the bitcoin price with the Nasdaq index has increased. While the S&P 500 bitcoin index shows a correlation of 0.52, with Nasdaq, that coupling goes up to 0.82. This situation implies a greater sensitivity of bitcoin to variations in the latter.

Within the downward trend of its price, bitcoin has reached stability after a rebound in purchases. When writing this article, the BTC price was USD 29,738.

Former US Fed Chairman said He does not think Bitcoin will Take over as an Alternative Form of Money

Former US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke expressed criticisms of Bitcoin during an interview. He considers this cryptocurrency an ideal tool for clandestine economic behavior.

Recently, there has been much discussion about the possibility of using Bitcoin as an alternative form of currency due to rising energy and food prices, as well as the increased consequences of inflation in general, including concerns about a global recession.

Former US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke discussed with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin whether the US is going into a recession and whether cryptocurrencies can replace fiat as an alternative form of money.

Bernanke highlighted that Bitcoin and other assets whose value fluctuate and mutates minute by minute have reached some kind of success but, they got created to become a substitute for fiat money. In that sense, they have not yet achieved the success they seek.

“If bitcoin was a replacement for fiat money, people could use your bitcoin to go shopping everywhere. No one purchase goods with bitcoin because it’s too expensive and too inconvenient to do so.

More Negative Opinions

The most important use of Bitcoin is mainly for underground economic operations and things that are illegal or clandestine. Bernanke says he does not think Bitcoin could make it as an alternative form of money. However, he thinks that Bitcoin and digital assets will exist as long as people are believers and want to create speculative panoramas on the market.

Also, about the idea of being a store of value, the former president of the FED said that Bitcoin is mainly a speculative asset. Bitcoin could face much more regulation, and hostility is also at risk at some point, so Bitcoin investors should already know that.

On the other hand, investor and influencer Anthony Pompliano later added that Bernanke has a bias and that his views are just too inaccurate. Pompliano expressed that Bernanke was a member of the Federal Reserve and therefore is a member of the money-printing machinery.

‘Pomp’ also stated that they have people like the former acting director of the CIA who went into the blockchain to study its financial activities and come up with a solid base discussing that four percent of all transactions happen to cover illicit purposes.

Likewise, Pomp countered the former official’s opinion that Bitcoin could not serve as a tool on a daily basis. He defended Bitcoin in stores like the supermarket to acquire items there, as well as in major retailers from Shopify to Starbucks, Walmart, and McDonald’s, so he is confused about where exactly Ben Bernanke wants people to be able to spend Bitcoin.

US Government Filed Charges against Venezuelan Doctor for Negotiating Ransomware Employed by Hackers

Cardiologist Moisés Luis Zagala González, a resident of Ciudad Bolívar, got accused of selling malware used by hackers to carry out ransomware attacks.

A Franco-Venezuelan doctor got labeled by US authorities as the mastermind behind malicious software employed by hackers to extract computer information and extort funds from its owners.

This week, New York prosecutors issued criminal charges against Moisés Luis Zagala González, a 55-year-old cardiologist living in Venezuela. The doctor got accused of allegedly designing ransomware and selling it to cybercriminal organizations. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) reported the allegations in a statement on Monday.

DOJ agents in the report accused Zagala of carrying out malicious cyber activities, which gave organizations in the Middle East the tools to execute massive hacking attacks. All while still being a doctor and attending to his patients. Authorities said that Zagala’s item even served to an Iranian state-sponsored opposing team.

Cybercrime Business Included Bitcoin

Zagala built Thanos, a ransomware tool that lets users generate other ransomware variants. The agents explained that the Venezuelan got accused of selling the malicious items in fiduciary currency and digital assets, including Monero and Bitcoin.

Ransomware is a type of computer attack focused on malicious software that blocks access to data and computer networks until a ransom gets paid. Hackers often extort money from their victims and request payments in digital assets because these can be more difficult to follow than other payment methods.

The doctor also received accusations for being the creator of a malware named “Jigsaw v. 2 “, which followed and subsequently registered the number of times the victims intended to eradicate the malware from their system.

According to the report, the effectiveness of Zagala’s products earned his business a good reputation among cybercriminals. Based on various reviews on online forums, US agents claimed that Zagala’s products could infect a network of approximately 3,000 computers. They also quoted a user who wrote in Russian that he had made “good profits” after a month of using the ransomware tools.

The DOJ highlighted that it relied on confidential informants within the cybercriminal space to start tying knots in the case. They also told that the FBI could detect Zagala after interviewing a relative whose PayPal account served as a conduit to receive illegal funds.

An Unusual Profile

The case against Zagala is curious and unusual due to certain features such as his profession and age because they don’t describe the typical cybercriminal suspect. It also goes against the stereotype of malicious actors based in Eastern Europe and Russia. Zagala reportedly lives in Ciudad Bolívar, located in southeastern Venezuela.

The authorities, who confirmed that Zagala taught himself to program computers, also extended the accusations, highlighting that the doctor had trained other hackers to use his items.

The Maker (MKR) Token Is the Only One Survivor of the Recent Crypto Market Crash

Maker has been the best performing among the top 100 crypto assets, preceding Zcash, which has a 10.5% gain. The weakened bearish strength seen in the last few months shows which force dominates the MKR market.

The Maker (MKR) token has benefited from the death of the LUNA cryptocurrency and the loss of stability of UST. Those events have made this the best week for the former since December 2021.

MKR is trading at around USD 1,467 and has accumulated a 20.3% over the last seven days. While its daily trading volume is above USD 106.30 million, its market capitalization is about USD 1.31 billion. It occupies 51st place in the cryptocurrency ranking, according to CoinGecko.

That sharp rise has made Maker the best performing among the top 100 participants in the crypto market over the past seven days. It precedes Zcash, which has a 10.5% gain, while only stablecoins occupy positions 2 to 8 in the ranking.

The Stablecoin DAI Is the Main Competitor for UST

Maker is the DeFi protocol behind the stablecoin DAI, the main competitor for UST. While DAI is suitable for payments and savings, MKR has a volatile price due to its limited supply.

Investors have turned to more reliable platforms since the Terra ecosystem has crashed and UST has lost parity with the US dollar. Maker is among those that have benefited the most from that situation.

The crypto market crash has severely hit the DeFi ecosystem, with liquidity losses of around 45% across multiple protocols. In the case of Maker, it has lost just 9.64% over the last seven days.

Of course, fear and mistrust have increased rapidly in the market in the last few days. However, given that DAI enjoys complete backing, its capitalization could rise thanks to the capital fleeing Terra.

The Technical Analysis of the Price of the Maker Token

The weekly MKR/USD chart shows that the scenario is optimistic due to the recent rejection of low prices.

The long-term trend in the value of the Maker token is bullish. The decline it has suffered over the past few months is only a necessary pullback to this previous direction.

The bearish strength of the last few months is considerably weaker than the previous bullish rally. That shows which force dominates the market.

The recent crash was about to make the Maker token hit the 88% Fibonacci level. That is an ideal level to mark the bottom of a deep correction.

Thanks to the recent rejection of low prices, the price seems to have reached the bottom. However, it is best to wait for more accurate confirmations to rely on that view.

Before confirming that the bulls have regained control of the short-/medium-term trend, the price must overcome resistance at USD 2,092. It might also break the descending line that has been forming.

If those confirmations did not happen, there could be more selling or at least a sideways behavior in the short term.

Ethereum’s Popularity “A Double-Edged Sword,”According to a16z’s “State of Crypto” Report

“Ethereum’s overwhelming mindshare helps explain why its users have been willing to pay over $15 million on average a day just to use the Blockchain,” a16z stated.

Cryptocurrency hedge fund giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has highlighted that Ethereum’s development and demand are “unmatched” despite the network’s high transaction fees.

The firm warns, however, that its “popularity is also a double-edged sword” as Ethereum prioritizes decentralization over scaling, causing competing Blockchains to steal market share with “promises of better performance and lower rates.”

The comments came via a blog post featuring a16z’s 2022 “State of Crypto” report, in which the firm’s data scientist Daren Matsuoka, chief protocol engineer and designer Eddy Lazzarin, the General Partner Chris Dixon and Chief Content Officer Robert Hackett work together to provide five key takeaways from the study.

Aside from Ethereum, the report focuses on topics such as Web3 development, cryptocurrency adoption rates, decentralized finance (DeFi), and stablecoins.

Quoted from a Twitter post by @a16z: “Introducing a16z’s 2022 State of Crypto Report. A lot has changed since we started investing in crypto nearly a decade ago. Here are 5 key takeaways from the a16z crypto web3 industry survey and data analysis by @darenmatsuoka, @eddylazzarin, @cdixon & @rhhackett.”

Ethereum’s Current Status

According to the data in the report, Ethereum rules out the competition in terms of builder interest, as the network has around 4,000 monthly active developers compared to second-place Solana with 1,000. Bitcoin and Cardano are next, at roughly 500 and 400 each, respectively.

Analysts noted that, “Ethereum’s leadership has a lot to do with its early start, and the health of its community,” but highlighted the importance of continued development of the network despite high transaction costs:

“Ethereum’s overwhelming mindshare helps explain why its users have been willing to pay more than $15 million on average per day just to use the Blockchain, which is remarkable for such a young project.”

The demand for Ethereum can also be seen in the report’s estimated transaction fees paid on a Blockchain over an average of seven days, calculated as of May 12. The data show that Ethereum accounts for $15.24 million. In contrast, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Fantom, Polygon, and Solana account for about $2.5 million of combined fees.

The report notes that layer 2 scaling solutions are struggling to reduce Ethereum fees and increase transaction speeds while noting that long-awaited updates are coming to Ethereum to make the network more efficient and profitable.

However, the “long-awaited” updates cannot happen soon enough, and a16z also highlighted in the report that in an average of 30 days as of May 12, active addresses and transactions on competing Blockchains, including Solana, BNB Chain, and Polygon, are already way ahead of Ethereum.

Some Preliminary Conclusions

The data show that Ethereum has 5.5 million active addresses, representing 1.1 million daily transactions, while Solana has 15.4 million active addresses and 15.3 million daily transactions. BNB Chain is in third place, with 9.4 million and 5 million, respectively, while Polygon adds around 2.6 million and 3.4 million, respectively.

Analysts conclude that it will not be a winner-takes-all situation:

“Blockchains are the flagship of a new computing wave, like personal computers and broadband were in the 1990s and 2000s, and as mobile phones were in the last decade. There is a lot of room for innovation, and we believe there will be multiple winners.”

Other key highlights of the report are the total value of the DeFi sector, which at $113 billion would make it the 31st largest bank in the United States; estimates that Web3 adoption could reach 1 billion users by 2031; and that NFTs have so far generated $3.9 billion in revenue for creators.

Aave Price Risks 25% Crash Due to Classic Bearish Reversal Pattern

A handful of worrying factors, in addition to AAVE’s correlation with the NASDAQ, raise the possibility that the altcoin will suffer another sell-off.

Technical analysis suggests that a recent uptrend in Aave (AAVE) price is showing signs of exhaustion based on the early development of a classic bearish reversal pattern.

Called a “rising wedge,” the pattern appears when the price rises within a range defined by two converging, ascending trendlines. When this occurs, trading volume decreases, indicating a lack of conviction among traders when additional purchases are needed to continue the upward momentum.

Is AAVE heading towards $70?

Falling wedges usually lead to a bearish breakout, where the price breaks below the lower trendline of the pattern and falls as far as the maximum distance between the upper and lower trendline of the wedge.

AAVE has painted a similar pattern amid its strong move, higher from nearly $61.50 on May 12, to above $93.50 on May 17. If a sustained breakout occurs, AAVE will drop to at least $27, which is the maximum height of the wedge.

This puts AAVE on track at around $70, down 25% from the current price of $89.20.

Bearish Winds Persist

The bearish setup for AAVE comes on the back of the current strong correlation of the cryptocurrency market with the US stock markets.

The daily correlation coefficient between the AAVE and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 stood at 0.91 as of May 17, showing that both markets have moved in almost perfect tandem.

The Federal Reserve’s aggressive monetary policy, which includes the recent 0.5% hike in benchmark interest rates, is at the center of this synchronous trend, in the face of rising inflation.

In comparison to AAVE, Ether is down more than 50% so far this quarter as investors reduce their exposure to riskier assets including Bitcoin (BTC) and tech stocks in a higher interest rate environment. This leads to the opinion of BOOX Research, financial blogger at SeekingAlpha, who remains long-term bullish on Bitcoin, Ethereum and the cryptocurrency market in general, but believes that the recovery could take several years.

Fears of Further Selling Remain, as Wall Street Veterans Warn of Impending Recession

According to Lloyd Blankfein, former CEO of Goldman Sachs, higher interest rates, coupled with supply chain problems, further lockdowns in China, and the conflict in Ukraine, could keep inflation high. The persistent combination of these factors is likely to cause the Federal Reserve to maintain its aggressive policy and the rebound effect will be a reduction in US economic growth.

Likewise, Michael J. Wilson, Chief US Equity Strategist and CIO of Morgan Stanley, reiterated the same catalysts while predicting a 15% decline in the benchmark S&P 500 Index. As a result of its correlation with cryptocurrency, the AAVE is also at risk of similar bearish moves heading into 2022.

It is worth considering the fact that the war between Russia and Ukraine, inflation, and the measures that are being taken to mitigate it continue to be the topic of the day for central banks around the world. This will undoubtedly be one of the main topics of the World Economic Forum, since the 2022 event begins on May 22.

The Forum, and the ability for attendees to make Bitcoin-related statements, both positive and negative, will follow a different meeting this week in El Salvador, where representatives from 44 countries are discussing Bitcoin.
