SEC Chairman Gary Gensler Criticized Crypto Bill Sent To US Congress

The US Securities and Exchange Commission leader has weighed in on the Lummis and Gillibrand policy because it would undermine investor protections.

Crypto investors constantly observe with concern and fear how the prices of cryptocurrencies keep crumbling down in the market and start to wonder how much the crypto will approach and how to deal with the crypto winter. Bitcoin is dancing around USD 20,509, crashing in a single day at least 8.36% and 70% of its maximum price achieved in November 2021.

The president of the SEC, Gary Gensler, highlighted his views on the issue at the summit of The Wall Street Journal network of financial directors, where he reflected on the current situation regarding the subsequent Crashdown in crypto prices.

When asked if the recent drop in crypto prices addressed a new urgency to the SEC fears about the current market panorama, Gensler stated that the problem stands out, but the problem has been there before.

The Crypto Bill Proposed by Lummis

Likewise, the head of the SEC referred to the crypto regulation bill sent by US Senators Cynthia Lummis and Kirsten Gillibrand last week. Gensler said he would prefer to have a conversation with the legislators first but the conversation must get held from his point of view.

The policy, as it stands, would give responsibility for different sectors of the crypto market to many entities and address many other factors, such as generating a tax break for small crypto operations. The concern with a law like this one is that it gives the same mission to other entities while it takes some crypto out of the control of the SEC.

Gensler expressed that most crypto exchanges list hundreds of tokens and that it is unlikely that all of them, 100%, are not securities.

Gensler said they do not plan to expand their jurisdiction, but these tokens got offered to the public, and the public is planning a better future with them. Those are the standard features of a typical investment contract.

The positive aspect of the bill is that the document would grant the required regulatory clarity on factors linked to digital assets for its subsequent approval in the United States Senate.

That is what says Michael Saylor, the billionaire businessman who owns MicroStrategy, the company that currently has more than 127,000 bitcoins in its balance.

According to the CEO of Microstrategy, there is no doubt that the bill “will receive many benefits from regulatory clarity that will make easy and boost the participation of traditional banks, public entities, and institutional investors. This improvement would make the entire digital asset industry grow exponentially.

The Bearish Tide and the Regulatory Problems of Binance Affect the Price of BNB

The rejection of low prices and the reluctance of sellers to mark effective lower lows suggest a bullish respite shortly. It is unclear whether the price can resume the strong long-term upward trend or will only be a pullback to fall again.

The price of Binance Coin (BNB) has fallen along with the bearish tide in the crypto market. However, it has not reached levels as low as the value of other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC).

BNB is trading at around USD 207 and has accumulated a 7.4% loss over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 1.71 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 33.82 billion. It occupies 5th place in the cryptocurrency ranking, according to CoinGecko.

Due to the recent decoupling of BNB Chain and Binance, the main currency of that blockchain took a different direction. That may have helped prevent further losses in the BNB price after the SEC launched an investigation into Binance.

Changpeng Zhao recently highlighted the need to distinguish between good regulation and over-regulation, as the latter would stifle innovation. The CEO of Binance also said governments should establish a new regulator for the industry.

Zhao considers that regulators should take a relaxed approach in some areas to allow the industry to grow and develop. He also said that it was crucial to classify cryptocurrencies to avoid placing crypto assets with different use cases in a single bucket.

Daily Technical Analysis of the Price of BNB

The daily BNB/USDT shows a short-term bearish momentum, which may have bottomed out.

There has been a rejection of low prices, the reluctance of sellers to mark effective lower lows, and an oversold. That indicates that there could be at least a respite in the short term.

After a possible rebound, there might be further selling again, but that would only change if the bulls start to mark increasingly higher lows.

The Price Remains above a Relevant Support Zone

The weekly BNB/USDT chart shows that the bulls are trying to keep a relevant support zone again. They previously started strong bullish rallies at that point.

The current point seems excellent for the price to start at least a respite to the upside. However, it is not clear whether it can resume the strong long-term bullish trend or will only be a pullback to fall again.

The value of BNB seems not to have yet reached the bottom of the bearish market. The 200-weekly SMA could be a place of interest for the cryptocurrency during this decline, which is near USD 155.

There is less space for selling, as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicates an oversold like the one seen in early 2019. At that time, the price of Binance Coin hovered around USD 5. The small volume in recent weeks also signals little interest in driving the price much lower.

Even though the price of BNB has not reached levels as low as other cryptocurrencies, it is convenient to research before investing in it. Knowing how the market of that cryptocurrency behaves will allow investors to make more accurate decisions.

Jan Van Eck Believes that Bitcoin Could Reach Highs of USD 250 Thousand

Van Eck said that Bitcoin would have half the market capitalization of gold, but it is hard to determine when that will occur. He stated that the institutional adoption has grown, as the value of the pioneering cryptocurrency will over time.

The CEO of Global Investments, Jan Van Eck, recently shared his general outlook on the market. He believes the price of Bitcoin (BTC) could reach USD 250,000 but notes that this could take a few years.

The executive said that buyers view Bitcoin as a complement to gold, which is the fast model. He commented it is almost impossible to vary that, saying that BTC will have half the market capitalization of the precious metal. He pointed out that it is hard to determine a time frame for that.

Concerning that opinion, Van Eck stated that the institutional adoption of the pioneering cryptocurrency has grown. He also explained that this should lead the value of Bitcoin to rise over time.

Van Eck recommends that investors include between 0.5% and 3% of Bitcoin in their portfolios.

The Price of Ether Reached a New Two-Year Low

The price of Ether (ETH) suffered its third-highest drop in 2022 after the falls in May and January. In a few words, it has been decreasing for the second month in a row.

That 21.52% loss in value has ended the hopes of those investors expecting Ether to be worth USD 3,000 in late June. That happened after it exceeded the USD 2,000 level, but many think that will not be the case.

From now on, the value of Ether could be seeking a long-term rally or another significant drop. However, investors should not think or dream of getting to USD 3,000 for a couple of weeks.

Overcoming the current market crash will be complicated, as it is the first time the price of Ether has turned negative in two years.

The Bitcoin Price Falls to USD 23,000

The price of Bitcoin has dropped to USD 23,000 due to increasing fears of new systemic risks. At the same time, financial markets are still under threat from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) campaign to halt inflation.

Bitcoin is trading at around USD 20,661 and has accumulated an 8.5% loss over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 40.24 billion, its market capitalization is about USD 394.68 billion, according to CoinGecko.

There is growing concern that the Fed may have to intensify its campaign to tighten monetary conditions. They recently reported that the US inflation rate unexpectedly accelerated to a new four-decade high.

This year, cryptocurrencies and stocks have faced pressure to the downside from the central bank to withdraw excess liquidity from financial markets.

MicroStrategy Now Drops USD 1 Billion on Its Bitcoin Bet

Michael Saylor has an unrealized loss of over USD 1 billion on his Bitcoin holdings, as the price recently dropped to USD 22,900.

The CEO of MicroStrategy first bought Bitcoin in August 2020 at just under USD 12,000. The company increased its holdings to 129,918 BTC through subsequent purchases over the following months. Those coins are worth less than USD 3 billion against an investment of nearly USD 4 billion.

The founder of the business intelligence software company sought to clarify their obligations regarding their Bitcoin-backed loans on Twitter.

The shares of MicroStrategy dropped by 24.32% since they have led the sell-off in crypto-related stocks.

Mayor Eric Adams Wants New York Governor to Dismiss Statewide PoW Mining Moratorium

Although the Major previously highlighted that he does not support crypto mining, Adams will suggest to Governor Hochul that she veto the controversial New York bill.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams opened up against the policy that intends to apply a two-year moratorium on new proof-of-work (PoW) crypto mining projects fueled by non-renewable energy.

According to Crain’s, Adams intends to ask New York State Governor Kathy Hochul to dismiss the moratorium. The New York Senate said yes to a law on June 3 that plans to restrain new crypto mining activities to include some environmental concerns about these currencies and the mining.

As such, the bill will stop the distribution of new permits for PoW crypto mining plans, such as Bitcoin, in the state of NY that focuses their activities on carbon energy for two years.

During the 24 months of the moratorium, the state will apply research on the potential environmental impact of trial-of-work mining. The Senate voted 36-27 to favor the bill, but Hochul’s approval is yet to get officially signed into an enacted policy.

Adams Asks for a Dismiss of the Prohibition

According to Decrypt, The Mayor explained that an official enactment of the policy would stand in the way of digital assets in the upstate. He also stated that digital assets are an undeniable part of the New York economic archetype, and they cannot keep posing as obstacles to stop their advance.

Adam and his comments seem to run in parallel with that of other enthusiasts in the crypto space, who suggested that the bill could hold back improvement and evolution in the industry in that state. According to these opponent enthusiasts, this bill could send the wrong message to crypto companies, substracting a significant attraction and interest in New York as a place with jurisdiction for these activities.

Since its introduction last year, the bill became part of controversy among the crypto community and got even described as a total prohibition on activities linked to crypto mining.

However, others keep focused on the project and say that it got relatively limited since it will not impact crypto mining entities currently carrying out their activities in the state, nor will it prevent them from complying with the upgrade of their permits.

Instead, the bill would set a limit and keep them from raising their energy consumption above the approved levels, which some thought it is beneficial in encouraging more sustainable mining activities in the region.

Mayor Defends the Crypto Space

Gov. Hochul’s approval or disapproval of the bill remains a matter under discussion. She had previously told reporters that crypto-mining could generate more labor potency in the state.

Meanwhile, its stance of Adams on crypto mining has not always been that optimistic. Although the mayor once spoke with sympathy about digital assets and their underlying technology, in a similar vein to his contemporaries, Francis Suárez (from Miami) and Scott Conger (from Jackson), the representative previously affirmed that he did not back up crypto mining activities.

Under the leadership of Adams, New York City became the second in the US after Miami to encourage the creation of their asset. In partnership with the City Coins project, the city released NYCCoin, an asset employed to empower the investment over city projects and other local initiatives.

El Salvador Marked USD 53 Million Losses in Bitcoin and the Salvadorans Raised their Voices

El Salvador’s national bitcoin reserves fell more than 47%. Some Salvadorans are worried about how the administration will deal with the losses.

The potent Crashdown in the cost of bitcoin (BTC) to USD 20,800, its lowest in 18 months, increased the concerns of various Salvadoran citizens. Through Twitter, many inhabitants raised their voices against President Nayib Bukele for using part of the national reserves to purchase digital assets.

According to this panorama, the Salvadoran journalist born in Spain, Roberto Valencia, expressed that it is hard to imagine how those who acquired bitcoin must feel when it was at USD 60,000 seven months ago, and now it fell below USD 30.000.

Along with this message, the journalist revealed a tweet from President Nayib Bukele from October of last year highlighting that they had acquired bitcoin on the dip (the fall). The digital currency danced near its historical maximum at USD 67,800, for which such a decision made the administration lose a lot of money.

El Salvador Lost at Least 47% of the National Reserves

El Salvador counts on 2,301 bitcoins registered at $44,189, according to SalvadorTracker. That means the Salvadoran administration has invested $101,678,889 in cryptocurrency and is currently facing considerable losses.

With BTC crumbling to $20,800, the Salvadoran reserves in Bitcoin run parallel to $47,860,800. El Salvador is facing an unprecedented loss of USD 53,818,089 in bitcoin, which implies that they have lost 47% of its previous investment.

Although other sources determine that the average price of bitcoins that El Salvador holdings is USD 47,434. For this reason, they maintain that the unrealized losses are now more prominent, above 50%.

However, it is worth clarifying that El Salvador has not sold its bitcoin reserves and plans to hold them in the future. If the price of BTC reaches a higher peak than what they used to acquire the currency, their funds will grow. This action is the goal Nayib Bukele is aiming for, who has not commented on the severe fall that the cryptocurrency is facing this week.

Bitcoin Crash Increases Uncertainty about the Strategies Intended for El Salvador

Another person who expressed her concerns with the move to acquire bitcoin was the political scientist Ines Martínez, president of the NGO D’Politic of El Salvador, which sides with democracy, human rights, and the active participation of citizens in the political environment.

She said he promised 50 schools with the profits from bitcoin, but all he did was lose more than USD 50 million to date funds from the Salvadoran citizens.

On the other hand, the current bitcoin bear market still creates an uncertain atmosphere in the crypto space and the Salvadoran population because they would not know how the government will face the public expenses that would attack the economy. In addition, the investment that they expected to gain with the issuance of the volcano funds got stopped until the price of the digital asset balances.

Celsius Attached More Collateral to Circumvent the Loss of its Users’ Bitcoins

If the Bitcoin price falls below $16,800, loan guarantees to Celsius will get liquidated. To avoid this situation, the company took another $530 million loan and employed it as collateral.

Due to the crude market in the crypto sector, with bitcoin (BTC) dancing at around $22,000, Celsius has decided to take precarious measures. To prevent its collateral deposited in other protocols from getting liquidated, the entity behind the lending and investment platform has deposited more wrapped bitcoin (wBTC) to add as collateral.

The plan of collateralizing bitcoin in MakerDAO (or in wBTC, a “wrapped” token of the most prominent digital asset) got repeated in recent days by Celsius. Between June 12 and 14, it attached a sum registered at 7,165 wBTC in the investment and loan protocol that permits the stable coin DAI (DAI).

One particular feature of Celsius is that its business model focuses on employing the deposits of its users in other investments, such as DeFi protocols and digital assets mining. By not being focused on the traditional scheme of loan networks, a bearish market context like the current one could bargain their solvency.

By attaching more collateral, the company could lower the BTC price that acts as the limit for liquidations from USD 17,211 to USD 16,852. The data about the position can get observed on the defiexplore.com site.

To acquire the funds employed as collateral, Celsius would have requested a loan of 23,962 wBTC from a DeFi investment platform Aave. This information came from Dylan LeClair, a member of the analytics firm UTXO Management, who shared the image of a user interface similar to that of that protocol.

The amount runs in parallel with $530.6 million, based on the wBTC quote. Subtracting the $278.5 million debt in the protocol, Celsius’s current collateral on MakerDao relies on $248.5 million.

Celsius Users’ Bitcoins Face Risks

The main struggle with the situation is that the bitcoins and other digital assets that users have deposited on this platform are at risk. Withdrawals got suspended on Sunday, June 12, as a protective measure in the face of market instability, and now these types of procedures are getting revealed to circumvent bankruptcy.

Furthermore, a liquidation by Celsius could seriously impact the market because USD 522 million equivalent in BTC would get sold, triggering the offer and lowering the digital asset price.

The Bear Market “Wears” Celsius

Until the end of 2021, Celsius achieved a flow of funds so vast that it approached at least USD 28,000 million, according to the protos.com portal. Now, with the cost of bitcoin 30% lower than a week ago at press time, the entity is making significant moves to circumvent insolvency; the funds it managed crumbled by 88% and would dance around USD 3,300 million.
