The Drop in the Bitcoin Price Affects the Economy of Venezuelans and Argentines

Citizens in countries like Venezuela say that Bitcoin is the only asset that does not always fall. In Argentina, some stablecoins monopolize attention, but they believe they will soon return to saving Bitcoin.

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has dropped by 67% since it reached its all-time high in November 2021. Various bitcoiners from Argentina and Venezuela recently explained how that situation had affected the economy of their countries.

Although those surveyed have different visions, most agree that Bitcoin has helped people become strong hands in countries punished by government decisions. They reflect that they have learned to be sovereign individuals with the cryptocurrency beyond the price of Bitcoin.

The Value of Bitcoin Goes beyond the Price

Venezuelan graphic designer Maximiliano Ramírez describes himself as a strong-handed Bitcoin holder. In other words, he is faithful to the cryptocurrency and does not sell his funds at the first sign of trouble.

The bitcoiner says that he saves and uses Bitcoin, as he has learned it is the only existing intelligent financial system. He explains that it allows him to make and receive transactions quickly and cheaply regardless of borders.

Ramírez also points out that Bitcoin gives him a record of his movements in the blockchain, outside the reach of state manipulation. He highlights that the price is not the only thing or what matters most.

Other Venezuelans believe that Bitcoin is helpful to circumvent the sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela and other countries. They say that the decentralized cryptocurrency helps reduce the dominance of the North American nation over the world financial system.

Bitcoin is the only Asset that Does Not Always Fall

Some think Bitcoin marks a distance from Venezuelan, Turkish, Argentine, and Zimbabwean national fiat currencies, which have progressively devalued. However, contrary to the cryptocurrency, they will never go up by 500% in 6 months.

Over the last ten years, several national fiat currencies, like the Venezuelan bolivar, have suffered devaluation. The latter has practically disappeared, while the value of Bitcoin has risen above 511%.

That leads to understanding why many Venezuelans and Argentines still find Bitcoin valuable despite the price drop in recent months.

Dollarization is not a good option in Venezuela since inflation even impacts the prices in US dollars. Bitcoiner Emilio Torres considers Bitcoin better than the Venezuelan bolivar (VED) or other fiat currencies in his country.

The Situation with Bitcoin in Argentina and Venezuela

Although there are many strong-handed Bitcoin holders in Argentina and Venezuela, most citizens do not focus their attention on the cryptocurrency.

While the interest in Bitcoin among Argentines has declined over time, that of Venezuelans has increased recently. The trade of BTC in bolivars on peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms has also dropped progressively since last year.

Gabriel Vago, CEO of the exchange ArgenBTC, commented that a similar situation is happening in Argentina. He noted that Bitcoin trading has dropped as people buy stablecoins like Dai (DAI) and Tether (USDT) to escape the exchange control.

Vago also said that the collapse of Terra caused fear in the market and drove many Argentines away. However, the demand for stablecoins is still increasing, as citizens use them to save.

The final Ethereum Killer Could be Bitcoin’s Lightning Network

Ethereum’s Solidity is more vulnerable than the programming language employed by Bitcoin. There are already successfully active applications carrying out their activities on the Bitcoin Lightning Network.

Ethereum is usually acknowledged as the most significant network to lead applications thanks to the versatility regarding the generation of smart contracts; however, Bitcoin’s Lightning Network (LN) is boosting its pace of development and could end up putting Vitalik Buterin’s network aside in this area.

Bitcoin, a more balanced and decentralized platform than Ethereum, should be the best ally of developers and Web3 networks. However, the ether network (ETH) has an apparent advantage over its development language, Solidity.

A language such as Solidity is much more versatile, complete, and friendly for creating smart contracts. Hence, most applications and projects that apply altcoins get connected to Ethereum and one of its side chains.

Despite the advantage that Ethereum has over Bitcoin, the Lightning micropayment network got highlighted as an alternative option for those who prefer the technology created by Satoshi Nakamoto. And, Solidity still has many flaws. Currently, the ETH language is as versatile as it is vulnerable to dealing with attacks. C++, on the other hand, appears to be safer.

Many tools build the third layer of Bitcoin or L3. It is called L3 since Bitcoin, as the first network, is the first layer. The second layer is the Lightning network, which, due to its transfer speed and low fees, is ideal for being the fundamental tool for other solutions with cryptographic technology.

A vast group of applications and tools got created with a focus on the Bitcoin Lightning micropayment network, making Bitcoin enthusiasts reflect on the capacity of this second-layer solution.

DeFi with Bitcoin on the Lightning Network

Atomic.Finance made its first job on the Ethereum network. However, Ethereum did not offer them the required balance for a project like the one the developers had in mind in the long term.

The Atomic finance team, intending to circumvent possible struggles linked to Solidity flaws, Ethereum’s transition to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), and the apparent requirement to deal with another token to obtain more liquidity, preferred Bitcoin and Lightning.

The app is currently in a beta stage of closed-door testing, and only a limited group of people have access to its features. However, this platform got created to offer its users the ability to use a wide range of financial strategies to profit from their BTC investments.

Bitcoin Price Already Broke the USD 20,000 Barrier, and Downfall Continues this June 18

Amid the uncertain scenario, high trading volume on exchanges, and the drop among the most prominent altcoins experienced on June 18, Bitcoin broke the $20,000 barrier and is still going down.

The event that many were afraid of and others expected is now here since, amid the crypto market turmoil, Bitcoin crushed the support of USD 20,000 and fell this June 18, even approaching a sum near USD 19,000 per unit, being this Saturday its worst performance day.

Bitcoin Crumbles Below USD 20,000 this June 18

This news is striking since Bitcoin (BTC), the most relevant asset of the crypto environment, fell below USD 20,000 this June 18. Trading at USD 19,210 with losses registered at more than 7.3% in just one day.

As reflected in the information revealed by CoinMarketCap, the price of Bitcoin breaks the USD 20,000 barrier shortly before 3:00 a.m. (New York time), a time that runs parallel with the opening of the European markets and where the crash in the price of the digital asset takes effects. In just two hours, it goes from USD 20,415 to USD 19,022 per unit, the latter being its lowest price.

Regarding the volume of commercial activities, this activity increased by 3% compared to yesterday. At least USD 33,095 million got traded through the most prominent exchanges, with Binance becoming the network that moves the most significant amount of funds.

Ethereum Crumbled Down to a Figure Registered at $1,000

Another token that also reached worrying support was Ethereum (ETH), the second cryptocurrency with the most prominent market capitalization, which is trading at about USD 1,000 per unit at this time, experiencing a 7.3% drop in its price compared to yesterday.

The market data presents that the fall also happened in the same space in which the price of Bitcoin got harmed, since the Ethereum price crashed shortly before 3:00 a.m., going from about USD 1,076 to USD 987 in just two hours, the latter being the lowest position for its cost throughout the day.

BTC and ETH Break Critical Positions

According to various experts, the barriers for Bitcoin and Ethereum represented critical support for their cost, so the expectation of a possible rally remained a hope before both digital assets crushed said resistances.

This situation generates more fear and uncertainty among crypto market investors, especially those with less experience. These investors are the ones who register the most significant losses and are possibly more encouraged to sell their holdings to diminish loss margins.

On the other hand, some still defend that investing in these digital asset means thinking about the future, so they understand that this type of market decadence can happen regularly and hope for a possible rebound once conditions reach a more balanced status.

In that sense, there are greater hopes regarding a Bitcoin ETF for the US market since there is much criticism against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the negative it has maintained towards this type of item in the financial markets.

A Recent Price Drop Leads the Bitcoin Reserve of El Salvador to Lose Half Its Value

Their Bitcoin acquisitions have a market value of just over USD 47 million, and the highest individual trade represents almost a 63% loss. The IMF urged El Salvador to remove the status of the legal tender of Bitcoin and expressed concern about issuing cryptocurrency-backed bonds.

The Bitcoin bought by the Salvadoran Government has lost half its value due to a recent sharp drop in the price of the cryptocurrency. That happened one year after they approved the law giving it the character of legal tender in the Central American country.

The Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele, posted on his Twitter account that they have acquired 2,301 BTC. He said that they had invested the equivalent of USD 103 million at the current exchange rate.

However, the pioneering cryptocurrency recently suffered a sharp drop with a 17.14% loss compared to the previous day. In that way, its price reached its lowest level since December 2020.

When writing this article, Bitcoin plummeted to USD 20,531, a price not seen in 18 months.

As a result of those losses, the 2,301 tokens accumulated by the government are currently worth USD 47.2 million (54% less).

Bitcoin Has Accumulated a 70% Loss Since Its All-Time High

The value of the pioneering cryptocurrency has decreased by almost 70% since its all-time high of USD 69,000 in November.

Due to the recent drop in the price of Bitcoin, the reserve of El Salvador is now worth USD 47.2 million, a 54% loss.

The Salvadoran government bought over 2,000 BTC for the equivalent of USD 103 million, according to the local newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.

However, nobody knows with certainty how much Bitcoin his government has acquired, as President Nayib Bukele only announces the purchases on Twitter. The last time he bought the cryptocurrency was on May 9th, when he invested USD 15 million worth of public funds.

The acquisitions announced by Bukele have a market value of just over USD 47 million. Besides, the highest individual trade (420 coins at over USD 59,000 each) represented almost a 63% loss.

The head of state has said on several occasions that El Salvador has bought Bitcoin during a dip. His government took advantage of a price drop to acquire the crypto asset.

The IMF Urges El Salvador to Eliminate the Bitcoin Law

The Salvadoran government negotiated an agreement for USD 1.4 billion with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). That organization urged the country to limit the scope of the Bitcoin Law by removing its status as legal tender. They also expressed concern about the issuance of their cryptocurrency-backed bonds.

On previous occasions, the IMF has insisted that Bukele disassociate himself from the Bitcoin law. However, his government keeps its conviction to continue adopting cryptocurrencies in the national territory.

According to the Financial Times, Crypto lending platform Celsius Network and the exchange Binance decided to impose a corralito, thus affecting the market. In that way, they seek to stop the withdrawal of funds and prohibit transfers by their customers.

Are there Similarities between the Celsius Network Case and the 2008 Mortgage Crisis?

The devaluation of collateralized assets had similar backlashes in both cases. The way out of the mortgage crisis does not seem pertinent in entities such as Celsius.

The case of Celsius Network attracted interest in the digital asset space because many users think their funds might be in danger due to the liquidity crisis harming the network. This situation is similar to the mortgage crisis that affected the United States of America in 2008.

According to an analysis by Michael P. Regan for the Bloomberg news agency, the first common point between both situations is the remortgaging of assets and turning them into collateral loans.

Bitcoin (BTC) investment and lending platform Celsius reported on Sunday, June 12, that it was suspending fund withdrawals for its users. This situation happens due to various aspects that split the entity’s liquidity.

The drop in the price of the synthetic ether (ETH) token stETH, handled by the Lido staking pool, was one of the possible causes, given that Celsius counted on 445,000 stETH under its control.

Also, as Celsius employed the funds of its users to invest in other protocols and generate profits, the decrease in the price of BTC led to liquidating its collateral on some lending platforms. To prevent this situation from happening, the entity had to house more collateral on platforms like MakerDAO, the stable coin DAI (DAI) issuer.

On the other hand, the mortgage crisis of 2008 was vast growth in mortgage loans in the United States of America. People requested them to take advantage of the low-interest rates that the State used to improve consumption after the September 2001 attacks.

However, mortgage banks ended up bringing loans to citizens who could not afford them. Even many loans had a variable interest rate, so in 2006, when the rate reached high peaks again, they could not meet their debts. This situation led to an increase in sellers, multiplying the supply of houses on the market and decreasing the property values.

The Celsius Case and the 2008 Mortgage Crisis Might be Related

One of Michael Regan’s statements focuses on the fact that in the terms and conditions of use regarding Celsius, they decide that the user allows the network to mortgage and remortgage the digital assets that users house there.

If Celsius faces bankruptcy, users could lose the funds they housed in it. It even clarifies the possibility that these affected people have zero legal rights to complain about this eventual situation.

In the mortgage crisis of 2008, one of the factors that unleashed the collapse of the real estate sector was remortgaging. When applying for a mortgage loan, a person asks a financial entity for funds by putting their house as collateral.

Oil Company in Russia Highlighted an Alliance to Encourage Bitcoin mining Activities in the Nation

0

Gazpromneft is the third-largest oil entity based in Russia, which joined forces with BitRiver to encourage Bitcoin mining locally with the energy extracted from its activities.

Russia-based state-owned gas entity Gazpromneft revealed an alliance with mining company BitRiver whereby they will harness electrical energy from oil activities to obtain crypto funds focused on Bitcoin.

This information got highlighted by the BitRiver team in a statement in which they explained that the entity desires to bring the infrastructure for the data centers but Gazpromneft would give the necessary energy to make the operations easier. The goal is to create crypto mining headquarters near new oil fields in Russian regions.

This alliance between BitRiver and Gazpromneft would bring crypto mining plants an extreme flow of electrical energy, generating at least 2 gigawatts or more to fully guarantee the mining of digital assets focused on Proof-of-Work (PoW).

Digital Assets and Mining Activities in Russia

The alliance arrived amid an obscure moment for Russia since an armed attack against Ukrainian territory is currently taking effect. The country is exploring financing procedures that may circumvent the international sanctions that most of the world imposed.

The announcement also arrived during harsh times for digital assets within the Soviet country since the administration pressed for them to get regulated while the Central Bank still stands firm about banning their commercial distribution.

According to the international level, the problem arrived because digital assets could work as a tool to avoid financial punishments against the region. However, various reports explained that the transparency and traceability of the activities, including the little liquidity that the market has regarding other sectors, would not allow the country to build an archetype to deal with its current situation.

Profitability of Cryptocurrency Mining Activities

Another detail pointed out by experts and analysts has to do with the profitability of PoW-based crypto mining, especially at this time when most projects implement different procedures to use models that show more balance when it comes to environmental concerns.

For now, the most prominent exponent that works under PoW is Bitcoin, a currency that, after the market, Crashdown, would experience a very dark scenario for those who mine digital assets. Analysts assure that with a BTC around USD 20,000, it would not be profitable to pay for mining today, especially for those who carry out these operations on a low and medium scale.
