Ethereum Mining Revenue Soars in Last Month of PoW

Mining revenue was approximately $730 million for the month.

Ethereum mining revenue rose to a three-month high due to increased interest in mining rewards. This was the last full month of ETH mining before The Merge.

Ethereum mining has consistently provided monthly income to mining companies such as Marathon Digital Holdings, BitDigital, Bitfarms, Riot Blockchain Inc., Hut 8 Mining Corp, and Argo Blockchain.

The announcement of the transition to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network was first made on December 1, 2020. The transition was finally scheduled for this month, causing a surge in demand for ETH mining rewards. as they will be removed.

As a result, Ethereum mining revenue increased to approximately $734 million in August from $621 million recorded in July, as reported by The Block based on data from Coin Metrics. This was an 18% increase in revenue over 31 days.

Ethereum Miners Suffered a Bear Market

Following the collapse of the algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) in the second week of May, Ethereum mining revenues were able to cross $1 billion despite the significant drop in its price during the month.

Less than $600 million was generated in June by contributing energy to validating transactions on the Ethereum Proof-of-Work (PoW) network.

Throughout June, ETH traded in the range of $896 to $1,965. In July, the asset behind the Ethereum ecosystem traded between $1,019 and $1,774.

Because mining revenue is calculated by the amount of ETH mined multiplied by the price of the coin in a given period, there was a substantial drop in revenue.

ETH Price and Merger Boosted Revenues

The process for the Fusion launch was announced by the Ethereum Foundation on August 24. The first step involves a network update called Bellatrix at the consensus layer that is scheduled for 11:34:47 AM. m. UTC on September 6. .

The second step, called Paris, is the transition part of the execution layer and is scheduled to activate between September 10 and 20.

The transition to a PoS network will see Ethereum join other networks like Cardano, which are trying to find the perfect balance for the Blockchain trilemma (security, decentralization, and scalability).

The anticipated reduction in gas fees and the increase in the use of decentralized protocols on Ethereum saw an increase in demand for ETH.

Within the period, ETH traded in the range of $1,428 and $2,023 after opening and closing at $1,681 and $1,554 respectively.

While miners will earn ETH rewards for a short period before the transition takes place, many miners have turned to other PoW coins such as Ethereum Classic (ETC) and the recently created Ethereum Proof-of-Work (ETHPOW), which can be traded on Gate.io, MEXC, Poloniex, and DigiFinex.

The Price of MATIC Remains Stable as the Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade Approaches

MATIC has moved between USD 0.75 and USD 0.87, while the RSI indicates a possible move to the upside. The trading of MATIC on Robinhood has occurred for quite some time for the Ethereum network.

MATIC, the native token of the Polygon network, has been among the best performing over the last few weeks. However, its current price represents less than 30% of its all-time high of USD 3.

After reaching that all-time high on December 27th, 2021, MATIC reached its yearly low of USD 0.31 on June 18th. Despite difficulties due to the defense by the bears, its price rebounded toward USD 1.06 in August. That is now a crucial resistance level to recover the bullish trend.

The price of MATIC has moved between USD 0.75 and USD 0.87, a linear trend, over the last few days. While the 20-, 50- and 100-day EMAs show a flat move, the RSI indicates a possible move to the upside.

If the bulls recovered the USD 1.06 zone, USD 1.19 would be the next resistance to overcome. When they exceed that level, the next one would be at USD 1.40.

On the contrary, a drop below the 20-day EMA in the MATIC price might take it back to USD 0.75. If it broke through that support level, the following one would be at USD 0.85.

The Price of MATIC Remains Stable despite High Selling Pressure

Over the last week, other cryptocurrencies have been under high selling pressure, while the price of MATIC has remained stable. Recent good news on the Polygon network might have increased the strength of its native token.

Stock trading platform Robinhood announced it would list Polygon after OpenSea said it would do the same. The trading of MATIC on the former has occurred for quite some time for the Ethereum network.

Polygon has also gone from being a simple layer-2 solution to projecting itself as the Internet of blockchains.

The Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade Will Not Kill the Polygon Network

Long-term MATIC investors must remember that Ethereum is one of the driving forces behind Polygon. The latter has provided Ethereum with scalability solutions at low fees and slow speed, but ETH 2.0 is more scalable and faster. Therefore, it is valid to ask whether the end of Polygon will come with Ethereum 2.0.

The Polygon network is more than just a layer-2 solution for Ethereum and provides scalability solutions for other blockchains. In addition, this network will still need Polygon despite the ETH 2.0 upgrade in September.

Since Ethereum is the primary promoter of Polygon, it is necessary to see the effects of a reduction in its use. Besides, the latter has worked on other scaling solutions, promoting itself and finding new use cases.

MATIC is trading at around USD 0.879431 and has accumulated a 0.7% gain over the last 24 hours. While its daily trading volume is above USD 237.21 million, its market capitalization is about USD 6.54 billion, according to CoinGecko.

Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies to Pay for Flights and Hotels. Is it worth it?

Tourist businesses that accept Bitcoin have so far achieved some media coverage.

Online travel agencies, hotels, and airlines have started accepting cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. But experts warn: that implementing this payment system can be a technological, legal, and accounting headache for companies, without forgetting the strong ups and downs in the price.

It also often happens that some companies announce that they will accept cryptocurrencies, but, after time and the initial euphoria, they stop doing so or end up resorting to intermediary platforms.

We can see, for example, the complex terms and conditions for payment with bitcoins on the Expedia website. The online travel agency advises that “to complete your reservation, you will be redirected to the Coinbase website, where you will see the total cost of your reservation in Bitcoin, based on an exchange rate established by Coinbase. The Bitcoin price for your reservation will remain valid for 10 minutes. If you do not initiate a payment during this time, the Bitcoin exchange rate will be updated and the Bitcoin price for your reserve may change.”

Let’s not forget that, in 2022, cryptocurrencies face severe falls in their prices.

Extra-accounting Register

According to Matthew Chapman, co-founder, and CTO of travel booking technology provider Vibe, “There are some travel companies that are starting to accept cryptocurrencies, yes. But you have to understand that in almost all cases they are using some kind of intermediary platform to handle the payment, like Coinbase or BitPay. In other words, they are adding crypto like they might add any other unimportant product.”

ā€œIf you are thinking about this, it is important that you consider that all these payment platforms charge providers a small commission and, of course, there are the necessary implementation resources to do it. There are also tax implications in some jurisdictions, which make an off-account record necessary. Basically, you have to ask yourself, does accepting cryptocurrencies leave better results on the network? Right now probably not, but that could change over time,” adds Vibe’s technical director.

Implementation Complications

James Montague, director of Security and Integrations at the company specializing in hotel technology Shiji, also warns about the complications to implement payment with cryptocurrencies.

He points out that, ā€œWe have had one or two hotel groups that have asked us about this, but once we explained the complications of allowing guests to pay with cryptocurrencies, it has not generated much interest, especially as a face-to-face payment method.ā€

ā€œAnd it is that many hotels,ā€ Montague adds, ā€œeven continue to have problems accepting credit card payments over the internet “instead of registering your data and then charging you with the physical card upon arrival.ā€

Even PayPal, AmazonPay or other alternative payment methods “are a problem for most hotels,” he adds.

Another added complication for payment with cryptocurrencies has to do with the deposit process, a procedure that is usually done when the guest registers with his credit card for consumption in the mini-bar or on the hotel terrace. ā€œIt would be quite difficult, as there is no way to do it currently with crypto: you would pay a deposit, but then when the refund comes, the value of that crypto might be different,ā€ explains James Montague.

In conclusion, he says, “for all these reasons, and many more, you can believe me, in the next few years we will not see this being anything flashy, with the exception, perhaps, of a very small number of hotels.”

Cybercriminals Broadcast a Crypto-Related Video with Elon Musk on the South Korean Government’s YouTube Channel

0

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism suspect that the hackers stole the ID and password of the YouTube account. Meanwhile, Pang Xue Kai believes that creating a bourse can help further local crypto projects emerge in Indonesia.

The executive power in Seoul and Google recently stated that cybercriminals had attacked the official YouTube channel of the South Korean government. According to Yonhap news agency, the hackers played a crypto-related video with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

The YouTube channel seems to have been subject to a cyberattack as its name changed to SpaceX Invest. In addition, it showed a broadcast dedicated to cryptocurrencies, including an interview with the founder and CEO of SpaceX.

A spokesperson of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, responsible for the YouTube account, said their employees noticed the situation. The official said they immediately took security measures and could restore control over the channel in one and a half hours.

They mainly suspect that the hackers stole the ID and password of the government YouTube account. Google, the parent company of YouTube, reportedly confirmed the hack while reporting that the case is under investigation.

Hackers also attacked another YouTube account, run by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), earlier this week. The criminals targeted the channel with over half a million subscribers, which is still unavailable, on two consecutive days. A representative of the KTO said that Google automatically blocks access when it detects abnormal activities with an account.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Government Plans to Launch a Crypto Bourse

According to local financial media, Indonesian Deputy Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga recently said the government plans to launch a crypto bourse before 2023.

The government official explained that the initiative sought to protect consumers amid the rising interest in cryptocurrencies.

He pointed out that they postponed the launch of the bourse, scheduled for 2021, due to the complicated process.

Minister Sambuaga also stated they would comply with all the requirements, follow all the procedures, and take the necessary steps. He highlighted that this proves that they are being careful not to miss any details.

Sambuaga said that creating a bourse needs preparation, like including validated entities. In addition, he noted that there are minimum capital and other custodian depository-related requirements, among other technical aspects.

Pang Xue Kai, the CEO of Tokocrypto, believes a bourse can help increase the interest in the sector from institutional investors. The executive considers that the industry will grow with the emergence of further local projects.

Although Indonesia allows trading cryptocurrencies as commodities, it does not recognize them as a payment method. The Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes has set income tax on capital gains from crypto investments at 0.1%.

According to the Commodities and Futures Trading Regulatory Agency, transactions with crypto increased by 1,224% to 859.4 trillion rupiahs (IDR) in 2021. In the first quarter of 2022, 15.1 million crypto users in Indonesia traded IDR 212 worth of cryptocurrencies.

Terra Classic (LUNC) Outperformed Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) in the Last 30 Days

Terra Classic is one of the best-performing digital assets in the last four months.

Terra Classic enjoyed a bit of a renaissance last week as its value saw a significant rise following the introduction of a 1.2% burn tax on all exchanges.

The token traded as high as $0.00031131 for the week before losing some of the gains. At press time, it is trading at $0.0002604.

Regardless of this, LUNC is one of the best-performing cryptocurrencies in the predominant bear market. Since its historic implosion in May, the asset has risen more than 25,000% over the past four months.

In the last 30 days alone, LUNC is up 160.5% and almost 200% in the last 14 days.

For context, Bitcoin has lost over 13% of its value over the last 30 days, while Ethereum has lost roughly 4%, despite the hype surrounding the Merger.

Terra Community Wants to Revive the Ecosystem

The original LUNA token saw its volume reach 7 billion after the collapse of the Terra ecosystem. Token inflation eventually led to its value plummeting from more than $80 to less than a penny.

The developers have since handed over the governance of the blockchain to the community, which is now looking to redeem the cryptocurrency.

Before the new 1.2% burn mechanism, the existing burn rate has already led to the removal of over 3 billion tokens from circulation.

Also, the staking mechanism on Terra has helped the token price rebound. The staking rate was 2.6% of the total supply as of August 27. But now it has reached 7.5%.

LUNC Token Burning Mechanism

The 37% APY staking rewards are the main factor that attracts more stakers. But these high yields bear similarities to the unsustainable yields that caused the original ecosystem to collapse.

However, many are excited about the new burning mechanism, which will go live on September 12. It will apply to on-chain swaps and exchanges like Binance and KuCoin.

Once the burn mechanism is activated, it could result in nearly half of the supply being burned in a few months, depending on trading volume. However, there are many variables that will influence the effectiveness of this mechanism.

Hackers Steal USD 174,000 from the Ethereum Wallet of Comedian Bill Murray

0

Gillas believes the hackers gained unauthorized access to the wallet through a drain exploit after an inadvertent interaction with a malicious link. The creation of the auction emerged to raise funds to help a girl who suffers from a rare CLDN5 gene mutation.

The wallet of actor and comedian Bill Murray, used to sell official NFTs inspired by his life, recently suffered a cyberattack. According to his partners at The Chive and Project Venkman, that happened after a charity auction.

The hackers stole almost 110 wrapped Ethereum (wETH) from the wallet, equivalent to around USD 174,000. They did it after the auction of an exclusive single-edition NFT, which raised 119.2 wETH, worth around USD 185,000.

Gavin Gillas, the CEO of Project Venkman, noticed an unauthorized withdrawal for 108.03 wETH (around USD 171,500), preceding a transaction for 1.73 wETH (around USD 2,750).

The NFT Auction Case Is Under Investigation

The wallet included the nearly 800 Ethereum NFTs from the Bill Murray 1,000 project and others he owns through his trading partners. However, the criminals did not steal the assets, which went to other wallets within hours, along with the remaining ones.

Gillas and John Resig, CEO of The Chive, a comedy-entertainment website, said they filed a police report following the attack. Besides hiring blockchain forensics and security firm Chainalysis, they contacted Coinbase NFT concerning the theft.

Chainalysis still investigates the case, but Gillas believes the hackers gained unauthorized access through a drain exploit of the wallet. Those attacks usually occur after the holder inadvertently interacts with a link used for scams.

On many occasions, the wallet holder signs a transaction they believe has a legitimate purpose. However, the victim provides extensive access rights to the tokens, facilitating the theft of those assets. In the summer and the spring, there were similar waves of scams on accounts on social media like Twitter.

However, the hacker may have had access to the wallets differently this time. Gillas said an employee of Project Venkman was also a victim of theft, which the former links to an intercepted computer.

The NFT Auction Aims to Raise Funds for a Girl

The idea of creating the Bill Murray NFT auction emerged to raise funds for the Chive Charities initiative. The money aimed to help a three-year-old girl Evelyn, who suffers the effects of a rare CLDN5 gene mutation.

According to John Resig, the auction runner-up Mishap72 donated 120 ETH to replace the stolen funds. He said they would also give the money for the care of Evelyn if they recovered it.

Resig said they hoped to turn a negative situation into an even better one after the incident. The Chive has launched a GoFundMe page to crowdfund additional donations to help Evelyn, beginning with USD 25,000.

The CEO of The Chive said people might face adversity by standing or crouching. The nature of the theft has led them to decide to be as transparent as possible about what happened.
