Recession? Recessions are Psychological, not Economic, according to Economist

Laurence Kotlikoff, an economics professor, has said that a recession can be a state of mind, rather than an actual economic situation.

Recession? There is no evidence that we are in a recession, or even close, says Laurence Kotlikoff.

Kotlikoff is a professor of economics at Boston University. He recently said that during adverse economic events, people feel poorer, based on what they read and hear in the media, even though nothing has changed in their lives.

“I don’t think we’re in a recession now, or have been for the last six months, because unemployment is still very low. If you look at the facts, there is no evidence of a recession. Yet everyone in the newspaper is writing about a recession. Bad news sells.”

Kotlikoff says that if news organizations talk about a recession, every other news organization feels compelled to talk about it, too.

According to Kotlikoff, academic research shows that, in the past, a drop in house prices has led to a decline in overall consumer spending. This is because people felt poor on paper. But was this really true?

“Psychology matters a lot because people are not economists. They are not trained to think the way I have been trained to think. So, they are wrong. They listen to what other people are saying, and those other people are also focused on the wrong things!”

Recession? We are Talking to Ourselves

Kotlikoff says that people discuss how high mortgage rates are and how high inflation is, but they don’t discuss how real mortgage rates have come down. Subsequently, in his view, people are misreading the economic reality, as talking about a recession can be a self-fulfilling prophecy:

“If we both believe in something that is not true, we make it happen through our actions.”

What Causes Recessions?

Kotlikoff often talks about what caused the last recession and how we can prevent it from happening again. “Nothing they said caused the great recession is backed up by the data. In fact, almost everything they said was true, it was not.”

In Kotlikoff’s article, called The Big Con, he says that the cause of the last recession was that people fooled themselves into thinking we were having a recession:

“We convinced ourselves that we had all these problems that didn’t really exist. That’s where psychology comes in: we psych ourselves up as a country. We put ourselves in recession. And we have been trying to do that again for many months in this country. And other countries around the world are doing it too. We may be able to convince ourselves of the next great recession.”

Kotlikoff says that the Great Recession was actually not even that big. “We only had a three percent drop in production. So this is a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Macroeconomic Factors

The economist also said that the Fed has become convinced that it needs to raise rates sharply. “But what’s really going on with inflation is on the supply side.”

Dr. Kotlikoff cites COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and Chinese production disruptions as things that have pushed up prices. However, he says that these price increases are temporary.

Kotlikoff suggests that companies should try to help workers by getting lower profits for a while:

“So let’s collectively change the psychology and coordinate on a lower level of inflation. Let’s not coordinate the recession. If we all believe in a recession, we are all going to make it happen.”

The Increasing Elimination of Useless Blockchain Projects May Benefit Cryptocurrencies

Many investors are excited about the potential for blockchain to dominate Web3 as the infrastructure of the new Internet. To increase trust in cryptocurrencies, it is crucial to have support from the best experts in finance and FinTech.

Investors usually join blockchain projects that offer advantages that the traditional Internet does not have. They believe they must plan to own a cryptocurrency for ten years to avoid losing it in 10 minutes.

There is potential for blockchain technology to dominate Web3 as the infrastructure of the new Internet excites many investors. However, investing in unknown cryptocurrency projects whose advantages are not clear might lead to losing a lot of money.

The cryptocurrency industry has a public relations (PR) problem, which has kept many investors from entering the market. The solution to that situation is crucial to increase confidence in new and well-established projects in the market.

Bitcoin (BTC) has made huge promises since its beginning in 2008, which it has not fulfilled. Satoshi said it should work as a currency, but its intrinsic value turned out to be a hedge against inflation. Inflation has skyrocketed to 8.3% in the US and 9.9% in the UK, which should have made Bitcoin in a bad mood.

The pioneering cryptocurrency does not have a monopoly on false promises. On the contrary, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) should have transformed the way of exchanging property but became a cash grab of hyped JPEGs.

Public Relations Professionals May Help the Cryptocurrency Gain Trust

Web3 needs to sell what it is building, starting with having a public relations professional. Journalists dislike exaggerations about the value of a story, which they will make public. The idea is to communicate the actual advantages of a product objectively, not what it might offer.

Warren Buffett and Jamie Dimons believe that many cryptocurrency investors are selling their holdings off. That is bad news for the industry, as a PR professionals should tell their clients that having those will bring them better results. If that experiment succeeds, support from the best experts in finance and FinTech, as well as personalities like Elon Musk, is crucial.

Regulations Play a Crucial Role in the Public Relations of a Company

Many investors have lost billions in bankruptcy, including the most legitimate companies in the crypto space. Among them are Celsius and Three Arrows Capital (3AC), to which increasingly few companies may join in the short and long term.

There might be less opposition to regulation, a crucial factor in the public relations of the industry. It is hard to improve the image of a company not adhering to the rules or regulations traditionally governing corporate affairs.

Employees may steal money from the coffers of a company and make side deals with competitors. That is happening in the cryptocurrency industry now, considering the poor enforcement of finance-related rules and regulations and misleading advertising.

Crypto Adoption in the Middle East Outpaces the Rest of the World, Report Says

Countries in the Middle East and North Africa have seen some of the fastest growth in cryptocurrency adoption over the past year.

Cryptocurrency adoption in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has made it the fastest-growing region over the past year, according to a report.

Between July 2021 and June 2022, users in MENA-based countries received $566 billion in cryptocurrencies, a figure almost 50% higher than the previous year, Blockchain data platform Chainalysis reported.

Turkey and Egypt: the Fastest Growing Markets

The report highlighted a couple of markets that show the predominant use of cryptocurrencies in the region, to preserve value against currency debasement and to make remittance payments.

While cryptocurrency values have fluctuated significantly last year, the currencies of Turkey and Egypt have both devalued dramatically, with the Turkish lira experiencing 80.5% inflation over the past year, and the Egyptian pound weakening 13.5%.

Naturally, this has made crypto more attractive, as Turkish citizens received $192 billion worth of crypto from July 2021 to June 2022, with transactions tripling in Egypt during the same period, compared to the previous year. .

The national bank of Egypt has also made progress in facilitating crypto remittances, payments from abroad that represent 8% of Egypt’s GDP. These factors have made it the fastest-growing crypto market in the region.

Investment-Driven GCC Adoption

Despite not growing as significantly, the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, have come to play a larger role within the region and beyond.

For example, Saudi Arabia has become the third largest crypto market in the region, while the UAE is the fifth. Dubai has become a hub for crypto businesses serving clients not only in the Middle East but also in the rest of Africa and Asia.

According to Ákos Erzse, Senior Public Policy Manager for cryptocurrency exchange BitOasis, cryptocurrency adoption in the GCC is largely being driven by investment opportunities seeking relatively rich investment opportunities.

He added that adoption “is not only on the retail or customer side but also in the ecosystem, with financial institutions and banks starting to work with companies like ours.”

Erzse also emphasized the role that recent inflation has played in pushing cryptocurrency adoption in other parts of the region.

Adoption of Taliban Tanks in Afghanistan

Despite significant growth in many countries, the report pointed to one that saw a complete reversal in crypto adoption. Following the Taliban takeover of the country last year, Afghanistan plummeted from 20th place in Chainalysis’s 2021 Cryptocurrency Adoption Index to last.

In the immediate aftermath of the regime change, on-chain activity spiked, as users scrambled to secure their crypto, before falling precipitously.

Afghan citizens received an average of $68 million in cryptocurrency per month. However, since November 2021, this figure has dropped to less than $80,000.

According to the report, the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice declared cryptocurrencies haram, or prohibited, after equating them with gambling.

Consequently, dozens of cryptocurrency traders have been arrested and many more have had to flee the country.

Arthur Hayes Believes the Growing Printing of Money Will Drive Cryptocurrency Prices Higher

Hayes thinks that the global printing of money will worsen inflation, causing the prices of cryptocurrencies to rise. The entrepreneur considers the rise in quantitative easing will benefit cryptocurrencies and gold, whose markets are smaller than the trillions of printed fiat money.

The Bank of England recently announced that it would buy government bonds to reduce the effects of inflation. That led Arthur Hayes, the co-creator of BitMEX, to comment on how tax authorities will respond to unfavorable economic conditions.

The American entrepreneur thinks that central banks worldwide will soon start printing money, thus worsening inflation. He predicted that the prices of cryptocurrencies would rise because of that move.

The Fiscal Adjustment Resulting from Current Inflation

According to a post titled Infection, in- and out-of-office politicians usually choose quick and short-term policies. Hayes outlined pre-crisis responses, saying prominent central banks printed money to reduce market pressures.

The economist said the inflow of funds caused inflation to rise, leading the authorities to reduce fiat liquidity and tighten monetary conditions. However, sovereign debt markets have suffered the most with that move, whose subsequent consequences he describes as the worst in history.

Hayes pointed out bond yields have risen as officials keep withdrawing cash in some countries. He also mentioned the influence of the war between Russia and Ukraine and other global issues. He explained that those factors complicate the fight against inflation by the fiscal authorities.

The rising tension due to undeclared World War III is affecting the current global economy. Hayes stated that there is evidence of the compounding financial effects of a credit withdrawal from the system.

The Printing of Money to Occur in More Countries

The co-founder of BitMEX believes that central banks will start printing more money to deal with global inflation. He said the Bank of England (BoE) has already sought to help its financial system by adopting Quantitative Easing (QE).

Through that policy, central banks buy government bonds or other assets to introduce monetary reserves into the economy to stimulate financial activity. The BoE aims to reduce the yields on some bonds, nearly causing the insolvency of many UK pension funds.

Besides the British central bank, other institutions have not stuck to their plans to combat inflation. Hayes said that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) has struggled, while other central banks have given in in other nations. For example, the European Central Bank (ECB) has started to hoard assets for the least stable member countries.

The energy laws of Germany have created a crisis amid the rising gas prices. Hayes predicted that the situation would affect the country’s export sector negatively. If there is a short energy supply, the syndicate might provide Germany with its quantitative easing policy.

Cryptocurrencies and Gold Might Benefit from Quantitative Easing

Hayes considers that the rise in quantitative easing will benefit fungible global risk assets like cryptocurrencies and gold. He explained that their markets are smaller than the trillions that central bank fiats will print, driving their prices higher.

The entrepreneur recognized the continuous fight against inflation by the US Federal Reserve. However, he said that Bitcoin and gold might appreciate as other central banks pump funds into the economy.

Arthur Hayes thinks this will not occur soon, citing the actions by the BoE as proof that money printing will fail. He concluded that yield would rise and the over-indebted fiat debt-based financial system would crash quickly.

Influencer Lark Davis Escapes Celsius Bankruptcy with $2.5M

0

Crypto detective ZachXBT reveals more damning information about influencer Lark Davis.

ZachXBT, a crypto on-chain sleuth, reveals that investor Lark Davis withdrew $2.5 million from Celsius while promoting the platform.

According to ZachXBT, Davis began withdrawing funds long before rumors of problems at Celsius began to circulate. In response to a comment made by Erin Daniel, he posted a tweet saying that, “People were already beginning to have issues moving funds at that point. He had already moved his funds out multiple days before he posted that Tweet.”

The Community Hits Davis

ZachXBT’s allegations are based in part on a voluminous financial report released yesterday by Celsius as part of its bankruptcy court case.

The report contains the names and transactions of all Celsius users, including former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky and his wife, who collectively mined $12 million from the platform in May 2022.

Former CSO Daniel Leon reportedly withdrew $11 million. In response to ZachXBT’s findings, many Twitter users expressed their anger at Davis:

(User @CaymanFell) “LARP Davis @thecryptolark steals from his followers. Stop following this thief.”

(User @ @Ace60891566) “One of the great grifters of our time. I can say that here, right (he blocked me months ago for mentioning his pumping ETH incessantly)?”

Most of the anger focuses on Davis’s alleged promotion of Celsius to his audience, revealed in a YouTube screenshot where he allegedly said of the company, “I like it too,” while he probably had access to insider information that led him to withdraw his money from the platform.

Furthermore, the revelations of Davis’ withdrawals have added insult to injury for some of his YouTube audience following the pump-and-dump accusations made by ZachXBT in late September 2022.

Familiar Patterns for Followers of Lark

On September 29, 2022, ZachXBT alleged that Davis had unethically pocketed $1.2 million from the sale of eight new tokens that he promoted to his YouTube audience of over 400,000 followers.

His findings came after he identified Davis’s wallet address in an old YouTube video where Davis added his address to receive donations.

The crypto detective claimed that these sales caused the prices of these small market cap tokens to plummet, leaving Davis supporters penniless.

According to ZachXBT, Lark had acquired UMB, DOWS, SHOPX, BLES, BMI, XED, APY, and PMON tokens. After receiving each of these tokens, Davis allegedly tweeted about them before selling them at a profit.

In response to the accusations, Davis insisted that he was not a crypto “whale”, meaning that his token sales were not large enough to cause token prices to drop significantly.

ZachXBT responded with the following tweet:

“Davis also claimed that he revealed to his audience that he had invested in specific tokens and that he had only tweeted about the price increase without telling them to buy the tokens.”

The crypto detective explained:

“Of course, the coin is pumped up the listing when the price starts at an initial market cap of $100k. He claims he likes these projects, but instantly downloads them after a shilling.”

At the time of publishing, Davis had not responded to ZachXBT’s Celsius accusations.

An International Tax Advisor Believes the US Is among the Most Crypto-Friendly Countries

The crypto market crash has attracted leading wealth managers in the digital, some of which have launched investment funds and cryptocurrency exchanges. The Treasury Department considers the implications of a CBDC on the future of money and payments, US global financial leadership, and economic risks.

Selva Ozelli, an international tax advisor and certified public accountant (CPA), said the United States is among the most crypto-friendly countries. It occupies first place regarding the number of Bitcoin and Ethereum nodes, which arouses the interest of regulators.

The US Government Aims to Adopt Blockchain Technology

The Office of Science and Technology recently stated the government must protect communities from the negative impacts of crypto-related pollution and climate change.

The Inflation Reduction Act introduced by president Joe Biden is the most significant investment by the US regarding greenhouse gas reduction, clean energy, and climate resilience. It uses around USD 370 billion for incentives like green energy tax credits to encourage the large-scale development of clean energy technologies.

Applying blockchain technology to micro-electric networks may promote socio-technical innovations to restructure a sustainable energy supply chain. That would allow the coordination of distributed energy resources.

Ethereum recently changed to the proof-of-state (PoS) consensus algorithm through the Merge upgrade. That has improved the sustainability and security of the network and increased its scalability.

According to the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute, the Merge has reduced the carbon footprint of the Ethereum network by over 99.992%. That should help the US meet its climate goals of a 50% to 52% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

More Leading American Wealth Managers Adopt Crypto Assets

The crypto market decline has attracted some leading wealth managers in the digital asset industry, like MassMutual and BlackRock. The latter launched an investment fund that monitors the price of Bitcoin (BTC) five years after its CEO, Larry Fink, criticized the cryptocurrency.

Digital asset firm Securitize Capital seeks to tokenize the Health Care Strategic Growth Fund II of USD 491 billion wealth management firm KKR. In addition, Charles Schwab, Citadel, and Fidelity Digital Assets, among others, are launching a new cryptocurrency exchange scheduled to debut in November.

Meanwhile, Coinbase announced that it would support a lawsuit against the Treasury Department, claiming it went too far when sanctioning Tornado Cash.

The Treasury Department Is Open to Developing a CBDC

The Office of Financial Research of the Treasury Department published a working paper about the implications of a CBDC in stabilizing the banking system. It stated that a CBDC could improve financial stability, as banks perform fewer maturity transformations when depositors have access to it.

In addition, it said the flow of funds into the CBDC helps policymakers to react more quickly regarding stressful situations. That way, they reduce the incentive for depositors and other short-term creditors to withdraw assets.

Meanwhile, the Treasury Department reported that there is a natural use case for a CBDC. They consider the implications regarding building the future of money and payments, supporting US global financial leadership, and minimizing risk.

The Illicit Use of Cryptocurrencies by Some American Citizens

In June, the Department of Justice announced the arrest of three people linked with the first cryptocurrency insider trading scheme. The alleged criminals included the former product manager of Coinbase.

In September, the government agency established a national network of digital asset coordinators to continue fighting the growing threat. They believe that some malicious actors among American citizens might use digital assets to commit illicit activities.
