From Bitcoin Spot to Derivatives, What’s Driving the BTC Price?

A few traders had open contracts based on the funding rate and open interest. There is only a small discrepancy between the futures market and the BTC directional bias.

Without a doubt, the Bitcoin [BTC] scale of around $30,000 has been driven by increased demand in the market. Needless to say, some of the major drivers of price action include supply and demand dynamics, investor sentiment, and macroeconomic conditions.

However, the interaction between the spot market and derivatives market activities is also the subject of intense speculation for BTC.

In simple terms, traders engage in the spot market for immediate delivery of settlement of a transaction in the underlying asset. By contrast, the derivatives market consists of instruments, including options, futures, and swaps, that derive their value from such an asset without real ownership.

Do Traders Now Love Quiet?

In past times, though, the futures market has had more influence on Bitcoin price action than spot demand. However, recent data, according to CentralCrypto, pointed to the opposite.

According to CryptoQuant analyst’s review opinion, the leverage of the futures market on BTC had choked off substantially, while the cumulative delta signal showed that spot activity was driving momentum.

CentralCrypto also noted the Open Interest (OI) Trend, which defines the number of open long and short positions on the exchanges. Usually, a rising OI implies more volatility, liquidity, and attention toward the derivatives market. When the metric declines, it means that investors are closing out their options or futures positions.

The analyst had noted the decline in the metric and commented that in such a period of lateralization “the number of derivative contracts compared to market size continued to decline, indicating a reduction in the demand for the use of derivatives.”

Spot: Neutralizing the Control of Contango

Contango refers to a situation where the futures price of an underlying commodity is higher than its current spot price. It is considered a bullish sign, as the market expects a future increase in the price of the underlying commodity, and as such, participants are willing to pay a premium for it at present.

The situation described above implied that there was only a minimal sign of a short squeeze, as traders have not been feeding the buy calls for further advantage. This was again confirmed by the Estimated Leverage Ratio (ELR), a metric that refers to the ratio of OI to reserves on exchanges.

According to Glassnode, the ratio was 0.22. Such a low ELR often coincides with volatility and strength in the spot market, as traders appear to be removing leverage risk from the markets.

When the financing rate increases, it means that the price of the perpetual contract is higher than the market price. Here, longs pay shorts. By contrast, when the rate is negative, the opposite happens and shorts positions pay for longs.

This implies that the price action has been controlled mainly by momentum from spot trading. Therefore, liquidity entering the derivatives market could have run out of control to drive a healthy curve. Barring changes, sentiment could continue to determine the direction of BTC.

DeFi Ecosystem Looks Healthy After Shapella Upgrade

0

A positive response has been seen in the DeFi ecosystem following the successful completion of this week’s Shapella upgrade.

Prior to the latest Ethereum network upgrade, some speculated that the massive sell-off of staked ETH would negatively affect its market price, but in the end, the exact opposite happened.

Despite the large volume of ETH not being staked on Thursday and Friday, its trading price was still supported to hit an 11-month high.

The prices of major DeFi tokens like UNI and AAVE also reflect the overall market’s optimistic reaction to the Shapella update. Both assets have seen their price increase with Etend in the coming months, the DeFi ecosystem will continue to adapt to the new changes.

A probable implication could be Ethereum’s reshuffling of the card game as investors look to redeploy their previously locked assets.

Now that Ether holders can delete and stack again as part of a diverse pool, decentralized exchanges could become the beneficiaries of such a reorganization. Likewise, many Ethereum-based assets can now migrate to various decentralized protocols.

Olympus DAO Backs Greater Exposure to DeFi Assets

So far, decentralized organizations are responding positively to the new Ethereum model. For example, on Friday, the Olympus DAO voted in favor of the revised treasury framework. Following the changes, the Olympus Treasury, which supports the OHM token, can hold more “volatile assets” like Ether.

Previously, Olympus’s cash position consisted of approximately 79% of stable assets and 21% of volatile assets. But the new framework adjusts the rate down to just 75% of stablecoin holdings.

The proposal approved by the Olympus treasury team indicates that increasing exposure to Ether is a step in the direction of ending reliance on centrally-backed stablecoins. However, he acknowledged that there is also a need to focus more on fully decentralized stablecoins.

As a final point, the new framework upswings the holding limit for decentralized stable coins LUSD to 10% as part of these changes, Olympus DAO plans to reduce its exposure to centralized stablecoins by more than 10%.

In an effort to move away from centrally managed assets, the treasury team said that as Olympus matures, the DAO should reassess these ratios every six months. They indicated that “This could include increasing exposure to ETH or introducing more pure decentralized stable coins as they become available.”

SEC Moves to Regulate the DeFi Ecosystem

News that the Shapella update went smoothly comes as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) moves to regulate decentralized exchanges.

On Friday, the SEC voted to approve an updated proposal on cryptocurrency exchange regulation first publicized last year. The latest changes include several that appear to specifically target DeFi platforms, and updated definitions could bring more people into the scope of the committee’s rules.

Although the SEC approved the new amendments, their decision was not unanimous. Two commissioners, Hester Peirce, and Mark Uyeda, voted against the changes to the proposal.

In a public meeting before the vote, Peirce argued that the new text “duplicates the flaws” of the original text. Additionally, he warned that the proposed rules could impose limits on the decentralized governance that is the foundation of DeFi.

“Have we thought about how forced centralization will benefit the American public?” she asked. To me, it seems wrong that we are promoting centralization,” added Peirce.

Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, and Ethereum: Price for Sunday, April 16, 2023

These are the most important data to consider about the evolution of these assets, in Euros.

Litecoin price has risen in 2023, with some upward movement. At the beginning of March 2023, the price of the crypto was around USD 89.22. This may be due to positive news related to Litecoin, including the partnership with Mastercard, creating the Litecoin Card program.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is both a cryptocurrency and a payment network, created after a hard fork with Bitcoin in December 2017, with the goal of increasing the number of processable transactions. It works as a payment method, using a peer-to-peer network protected by the “Proof-of-Work” consensus.

In regards to Ripple, in addition to the bullish mood seen in near-term indicators, there are expectations that it could win a victory against the SEC in what would be one of the most momentous lawsuits for the entire cryptocurrency industry.

As of Ethereum, its update to Shanghai has kept the attention of investors and traders in recent weeks. Shanghai has resulted in more than 16 million ETH tokens entering the market, which can potentially trigger sales as well as positively impact its price.

Below are details of the evolution of these cryptos.

“Forget Art, Let’s Trade”: How a 10-Person Startup Came to Dominate NFT Markets

Along with other digital assets, the NFT market has declined from its peak in January last year, when monthly sales skyrocketed to $5 billion. But in March 2022, operations worth $1.7 billion were registered, while the volume so far this year exceeds $4.7 billion.

Tieshun Roquerre, 24, co-founder of Blur, an NFT trading company, recalls the Vestaboard that hangs on the wall of his office and remembers that a few months ago the incessant click it emitted was deafening.

In the past six months, Roquerre and co-founder Anthony Liu, until recently known by his Internet name “Galaga,” have built the largest marketplace by NFT trading volume, unseating market leader OpenSea. Their creation secured a valuation of $13.3 billion in January 2022, making its co-founders Devin Finzer and Alex Atallah the first NFT billionaires. In March 2022, tiny Blur, which has just 10 employees, posted trading volume of $1 billion, compared with $260 million for OpenSea.

Along with other digital assets, the NFT market has declined from its peak in January 2022, when monthly sales skyrocketed to $5 billion. This year, however, the volume exceeds $4.7 billion. Some of the most popular NFTs, like Bored Apes, regularly sell for over $100,000.

NFT Trading Volume

San Francisco-based Blur’s rapid rise has stunned industry insiders because it was able to overtake New York-based OpenSea despite unsuccessful attempts by other well-funded start-ups.

OpenSea came to dominate the NFT market in the summer of 2021 and even as a flood of competitors arrived, OpenSea held around 75% of the market by the end of 2022. Its 2.5% transaction fees helped it raise $472 million in revenue in 2022, from a trading volume of $18.8 billion, according to Dapp Radar.

Roquerre identified a gap among customers that OpenSea did not serve very well: active NFT traders who sometimes traded hundreds of thousands of dollars a day in NFT. Based on this, Blur designed a very different user interface from OpenSea, inspired by active stock trading interfaces, with simple lists of NFT collections on a black background, and sortable columns displaying important trading data such as minute-by-minute price, volume, and ownership information.

Main NFT Collections

To keep costs down for these merchants, Blur launched a controversial tactic: it made payment of royalties to artists optional. Blur’s move, which angered artists, caused OpenSea to cut their royalties, and as of February, both markets had agreed to abide by a minimum royalty fee of 0.5%.

“Blur said, ‘I don’t care about art. I want to make a trade where people can make a market for these parts and I don’t really even care what they look like. I’m just going to trade them,” according to Shane Cutra, a former trader at the Chicago Options Exchange. Cutra claims to have made about $400,000 trading NFTs, since December 2020.

Building a sustainable moat around a business model took Blur less than six months from its launch last year, although it faces many challenges to staying on top. For starters, Blur doesn’t charge fees, so it lives mainly on its $11 million in venture capital funding. It will have to adopt fees or come up with some other revenue-generating model to sustain its overhead, which currently consists of just 10 employees, most of them software engineers.

$198M were Introduced for Ethereum Staking in the Last 24 Hours

Ethereum main net successfully completed the Shapella upgrade on April 12th. Shapella’s update effective execution means that Ethereum validators can finally withdraw their Ether staked on the Beacon chain.

Enabling withdrawals for Ethereum staking on the Beacon blockchain indicates that the Ethereum proof-of-stake has reached a point of satisfactory stability and security, and stakers who participated in securing the network will be able to recover their staked funds.

Regarding the aforementioned, there are concerns about mass withdrawals, around 94,800 Ethereum have been deposited on the network in the last 24 hours, while some Ethereum enthusiasts are more optimistic about the network than ever before.

According to data compiled by Nansen, the total amount of staking deposits reached $198.7 million, or 94,800 ETH, in the last 24 hours.

Staking as Central Activity Delivered by the Shapella’s Update

Staking takes center stage after the latest network upgrade in Shanghai on Wednesday. This change has allowed users who had their ETH block up for two years to finally be able to withdraw their holdings.

A staking is when a user commits cryptocurrency to the network in order to operate it. Ethereum requires staking because it currently runs on a proof-of-stake blockchain, using validators rather than miners to secure the network.

Those who do staking get digital currency rewards in the process. Ethereum moved to proof of stake last year in a long-awaited transition known as a merger.

However, going back to the latest data, ETH deposits are still negative, indicating that, there are still more withdrawing entities than staking entities in general.

Nansen analyst Martin Lee pointed out “That’s to be expected, because this is just the beginning,” “Validators who have accumulated excess ETH for earnings will want to unstack as they are only accumulating rewards on 32 ETH.”

Validators can choose between “partial exit” or “full exit” when leaving the network. Partial exit refers to validators who only keep the cumulative reward, but continue to keep their 32 ETH stake in the network while Full Exit refers to validators who decide to withdraw their rewards, the 32 ETH initial deposit, and leave the network completely.

Remarkably, there was even a brief moment where deposits far outnumbered withdrawals, with 27,000 ETH deposited and only 7,615 ETH withdrawn yesterday.

According to a chart showing withdrawals and deposits on Ethereum published by Nansen, top deposits up to now have come from a few entities such as Lido, OKX, Kiln.fi, Frax, Lee informed. Though, the most outstanding is coming from a wallet labeled ‘P2p ETH2 Depositor’ as they have deposited 50,000 ETH lately.

As for the descending trend in withdrawals, Lee indicated that the network will soon reach a “baseline” once this first wave of validators can claim the accumulated rewards.

This analyst from Nansen has expressed that it is expected that there will be an uptick at the beginning since, as mentioned, even validators who want to continue staking will want to withdraw their accumulated earnings and get their hands on them again.

Regardless of the immediate impact of withdrawals, Ethereum continued success of proof-of-stake depends on incentivizing ETH holders to validate the network, and staking has proven to be an effective mechanism for doing so.
