In Numbers: What Is the Historical Profit Margin of Bitcoin Miners?

0

It seems that the value of BTC has risen in the last day.

Data from on-chain analytics firm Glassnode has revealed the all-time aggregate profit margin for Bitcoin miners; this is what it is.

Bitcoin Miners Have Obtained a Profit of 37% on their Total Investment

In a recent tweet, Glassnode released the latest data on the current position of miners regarding their revenue, costs, and profit. First, to calculate the revenue of these chain validators, the analytics firm has taken the sum of the “thermocap” and the transaction fees that this cohort has earned over their lifetime.

The thermocap is an indicator that measures the cumulative sum of the issuance multiplied by the spot price of Bitcoin. In simpler terms, this metric tells us the total value of block rewards miners have earned over the lifetime of the network.

To find the costs incurred by this group, Glassnode has used its “difficulty regression model”. This is a model to find the production cost of Bitcoin and is based on “mining difficulty”. Mining difficulty is a feature of the BTC Blockchain that controls how difficult it is for miners to mine on the network. Such a concept exists because the chain wants to keep its block throughput rate (the speed at which blocks are processed by miners) at a constant value.

Every time the computing power connected by the miners (the “hashrate”) changes, their ability to mine naturally changes with it. For example, miners can perform their tasks faster if they connect more machines to the network. However, as already mentioned, the network does not want miners to become faster (or slower) than the standard rate, so it adjusts the difficulty to neutralize this change.

In the case of the example above, the difficulty of the chain would increase in response, bringing miners back to the desired speed. The difficulty regression model assumes that difficulty encapsulates all the costs that miners have to pay, as it is directly related to the amount of computing power that these validators have connected to the network.

Glassnode has shared a graph, via Twitter, that how Bitcoin miners have earned lifetime revenue of around $50.2 billion, while their cumulative cost of production is around $36.6 billion. Revenues have been higher than costs for this group, which means that BTC miners have made some profit.

In numbers, this means that miners have earned total all-time earnings of $13.6 billion. Such figure represents a 37% return on the investments of these chain validators.

BTC Price

Bitcoin is trading around $28,700, up 4% in the past week. It is trading today, May 3, at US$28,649.92, according to the Live Coin Watch portal. This price positions it 102% compared to its value 24 hours ago and 101% compared to the same day last week. The token’s current domain (market capitalization) is US$554,741,447,015.

To sum up, Bitcoin has experienced four consecutive months of growth, an unprecedented event. Historically, this trend has never led to new lows, indicating that the Bitcoin bear market may be over. Still, only time will tell if this pattern holds and the Bitcoin bear market ends, as the legacy banking system faces significant challenges.

XRP price prediction and what Ripple vs SEC could mean for AltSignals (ASI)

0

XRP was trading around $0.46 cents this morning on Tuesday, May 2. Although the price of the sixth-ranked cryptocurrency by market cap is up about 38% year-to-date, it was only in the green last week and down about 10% over the past 30 days.

The largely flat returns for the coin in the seven-day period come as Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap, hovered around $28,000. The BTC price settled at this crucial level after retesting resistance near $30,000 this weekend on banking news related to troubled First Republic Bank ( NYSE: FRC ).

As XRP and other major altcoins look for a base, the presale of AltSignals (ASI) continues to attract strong investor interest. According to analysts, the XRP token and ASI seem to have to a greater chance of crypto outperformance over stocks in the coming months.

XRP Price Prediction: the Big Wait for XRP Rally

XRP price briefly entered positive territory on the 24-hour record overnight Monday, but failed to take off even after the rumors. This is likely due to sentiment checking after comments from Deaton and others, which one XRP trader noted as in the tweet below.

If the #Ripple and SEC rumors were actually true then #XRP would be skyrocketing.

Therefore, the XRP token currently sits near the key support base below $0.47 cents. Even then, the expectation is that a win for Ripple Labs in the coming weeks could trigger a massive explosion for XRP, while a win for the regulator could not only affect XRP, but many other coins recently highlighted as values by the agency.

On the positive side, demand leading to renewed buying pressure for XRP amid a bullish market outlook for cryptocurrencies could catapult the value of XRP to the psychological $1 dollar.

After that, targeting the all-time high of $3.40 reached in January 2018 could offer XRP bulls a chance to catch up with their peers after lagging behind 10 other major coins in the latest bull market.

Five Cryptocurrency Risks You Need to Know about

If you are new to cryptocurrency investing, there are certain risks you should be aware of.

The crypto market picked up momentum again in 2023. The Bitcoin currency has gained more than 90% in value since the turn of the year. Altcoins have followed bitcoin and seen huge gains in recent weeks.

Investing in cryptocurrencies can generate great profits in the future. Unlike other asset classes, cryptocurrencies are highly volatile and therefore also offer the potential to generate extremely high returns.

However, some dangers and risks that come with investing in cryptocurrency need to be addressed. That doesn’t mean you should be afraid to invest. However, it is paramount to highlight five risks when investing in cryptocurrencies.

The Risks of Investing in Cryptocurrencies

Strong Price Losses: Cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate wildly. This means that you can earn high returns. However, prices can also drop sharply in a short period of time. Inexperienced investors often sell at lower prices and realize losses.

Scams: Unfortunately, the cryptocurrency market is full of scams. There are now several thousand cryptocurrencies. There are always scams between these currencies. A young, volatile and unregulated market attracts scammers who want to win over inexperienced investors with good marketing.

Theft: Like digital currencies, the risks of digital theft are also very high. While with FIAT currencies, banks protect people’s money, cryptocurrency investors are often responsible for their own currencies. Inattentive behavior can easily lead to theft. Even though Blockchain technology is considered the most secure yet, it cannot anticipate or prevent mistakes by its users. In other words, if a user’s private key is accidentally in someone else’s possession, it could be used for theft or fraud.

Cryptocurrency Exchanges: Cryptocurrency exchanges make it easy to buy and trade cryptocurrencies. However, these core trading platforms also carry their own risks, such as theft (Mt. Gox) or bankruptcy (FTX). Due to the confidentiality and anonymity provided by its operations where it is not necessary to provide personal data of those who operate with these cryptoactives, it is possible to use them for anything. Even, through the use of appropriate techniques, the “traces” of transactions, such as the financing of terrorism, can be eliminated.

Own Loss of Coins: If you don’t want to trust crypto exchanges, you can use your own wallet to store your cryptocurrencies. But many investors have already lost their keys (private keys) here. A loss of the keys means a permanent loss of the coins.

How to Avoid These Cryptocurrency Risks?

The most important quality for a cryptocurrency investor to minimize these risks is a willingness to learn. With the right knowledge, these risks can be avoided or at least reduced as much as possible.

Initially appearing as an alternative payment method to currencies issued by central banks, cryptocurrencies have become high-risk investment and speculation assets.

Therefore, if you have already invested or want to invest in cryptocurrencies, it is essential to take into account that it is a product with a lot of risk. Hence the urgent need to be informed and follow the following recommendations, which apply to any investment: to know what you are investing in; to invest only money that is not needed; to avoid borrowing to invest; and to invest for the long term.

UK Attracts Crypto Firms with Lighter Regulations Amid Strangling Innovation in the US

The US traditionally lacks crypto regulation and while it may be strangling innovation, the UK is looking to attract companies that cannot adapt to these regulations.

Over the past decade, the crypto space has emerged as a potential financial revolution, and lawmakers around the world are trying to figure out the best way to regulate it. However, some US lawmakers and companies believe the US is strangling innovation with its heavy-handed and often confusing approach to regulating cryptocurrencies.

The UK, though, hopes it won’t have to go down such road; therefore, companies seeking relief are looking for solace in UK Blockchain technology and markets.

Nuanced Approach to Crypto Regulation: A16z and Polygon Labs Proposal

Venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) recently called on the UK Treasury not to take the US’s heavy-handed approach to regulation, instead focusing on a more “nuanced” approach.

UK authorities had laid out plans in February to regulate cryptocurrency exchanges like they do other traditional financial venues, and a16z Head of Policy Brian Quintenz said the investment firm hoped to continue working with the Treasury to build “rules of world class that will protect consumers and allow this innovation to flourish.”

Said UK government proposed regulatory framework combines existing financial asset laws with updated crypto-specific rules. Polygon Labs, the driving force behind the Polygon Blockchain network and the 10th largest cryptocurrency MATIC, sent the response to Treasury and generated suggestions to Treasury, including a proposal that “unbacked crypto assets” should be treated differently than coins and tokens that have a team behind them and a value associated with other assets.

UK Crypto Welcome Mat: Turbocharged Exchange Relief from US Regulatory Pressures

US SEC Chairman Gary Gensler has taken an aggressive approach to enforcing compliance on major cryptocurrency brands, prompting a distant split from Republican politicians who feel the technology is crowding out.

This is the welcome mat the UK has rolled out for cryptocurrency companies seeking relief from US regulatory pressures, going so far as to say that the market has the potential to “accelerate” their cryptocurrency sector. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made it clear, as finance minister, that he was interested in making the UK a crypto hub, mirroring moves made by Dubai, Singapore, and even Hong Kong, in recent years.

UK: A Web3 Innovation Hub for Blockchains

Coinbase CEO Brayan Armstrong recently had a meeting with UK Chancellor of the Exchequer and City Minister Andres Griffith to discuss the positive implications of the UK legislation and the vision it laid out for the UK to become a Web3 innovation hub.

Coinbase’s Armstrong laid out nine recommendations to the UK government in his speech at the London FinTech conference; including collaboration between the banking and FinTech sectors and the development of regulatory frameworks that promote stablecoins and tax treatments for crypto assets. All of these were elements that Armstrong felt would “cement his place” as the center of Web3, in line with Prime Minister Sunak’s vision.

The UK still has a bit of time left in terms of its regulatory framework, and whether it will succeed in becoming a crypto hub remains to be seen. However, the country’s concrete steps towards a crypto-friendly landscape could well help ensure the current and future success of cryptocurrencies.

MicroStrategy CEO Says his Conviction in Bitcoin Remains Strong as Company Returns to Profit in First Quarter

Michael J. Saylor co-founder and current Chairman of MicroStrategy a whose main service is to provide business intelligence, and also offer plenty of other digital services, such as mobile software and cloud-based services, has reiterated its commitment to its Bitcoin investment strategy, as the one-time tax benefit helped the company to achieve an important profit in the first quarter of 2023.

BTC posted its first quarterly profit since 2020 and that produced that the Michael Saylor-founded firm returned to green numbers in Q1 2023 with a USD 94 million profit, which was largely attributed to a one-time income tax benefit of USD 453.2 million.

Phong Lee, the firm’s CEO, explained in his May 1st statement that MicroStrategy’s “conviction” in its Bitcoin investment strategy continues to be “strong” as ever. He pointed out that:  “Conviction in our bitcoin strategy remains strong as the digital asset environment continues to mature.” In addition to the tax benefit, the firm collected USD 121.9 million in revenue, up 2.2% from the same time last year.

Andrew Kang, the firm’s CFO said that the firm also managed to reduce its leverage by repaying its USD 161 million Bitcoin-backed loan from the now collapsed Silverage Bank. He explained that in the first quarter, we strengthened our capital structure by reducing leverage through the full repayment of our bitcoin-backed loan.

According to previous U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) declarations, the business intelligence firm purchased 7,500 BTC in the first quarter in two purchases on March 23 and April 5 for a total of USD 179 million, according to a bar chart showing MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin accumulation by quarter provided by MicroStrategy.

The company now owns 140,000 BTC, which were collectively purchased at an average cost of about USD 29,803 and its gains come as BTC rose 72% during the first quarter to USD 28,300.

Will Bitcoin’s Price Hold at USD 28,000?

Bitcoin price failed to start a recovery wave above the $29,000 resistance zone, but extended its decline and traded below the $28,200 support zone.

Two indicators remain solid despite the 5% pullback. With the current BTC price at USD 28,100, MicroStrategy has lost 5.7% of its investment in bitcoin. However, the firm was in “green” for a period of time last month when BTC soared to its most recent high of USD 30,980 on April 15.

The price even broke the $28,000 level and tested $27,650. A low is formed near $27,664 and the price is now consolidating losses. It is trading near the $28,000 resistance zone. There is also a major bearish trend line forming with resistance near $28,000 on the hourly chart of the BTC/USD pair.

The software analytics firm began investing its cash reserves in BTC on March 5, 2021, when it bought 91,064 BTC, 65% of its total holdings today.

On the other hand, Saylor recently revealed that MicroStrategy has integrated Bitcoin Lightning into its corporate email address, which is a protocol ‘layered’ on top of the Bitcoin blockchain.  According to experts, Bitcoin can function without the Lightning Network, but the Lightning Network cannot function without Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin-savvy firm is also in the process of developing a Software as a Service tool based on the Bitcoin layer two Lightning network for corporations.

CBDC Risks: Learn about Digital US Dollars

The digital dollar raises privacy concerns, as it potentially facilitates government overreach. Cybersecurity threats, including hacks and the costs of protecting digital currency, present additional risks. The adoption of a digital dollar could worsen financial inequality, widen the digital divide and hurt small businesses.

A CBDC is a publicly accessible digital representation of a country’s central bank currency. Unlike digital money used in bank accounts and digital wallets, which are liabilities of commercial banks, a CBDC is a liability of the central bank.

While there are currently physical currencies and digital balances held by commercial banks at the central bank, the Federal Reserve (Fed) is considering a CBDC to “improve the security and efficiency of the United States domestic payment system.” This is due to the emergence of new financial products and services from the private sector, such as digital wallets, mobile payment applications, cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.

Controversy around CBDCs

As central banks around the world explore the concept of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the possible introduction of a digital dollar in the United States has sparked lively debate.

A CBDC could provide a platform for innovative financial products and services, faster and cheaper payments, and greater financial inclusion for consumers.

However, a US CBDC also presents risks and policy concerns. These include its impact on the market structure of the financial sector, the availability and cost of credit, the security and stability of the financial system, and the effectiveness of monetary policy.

Dangers of a Digital Dollar: The Risks of CBDCs

One of the most significant dangers of the digital dollar is the potential loss of user privacy. With the ability to track digital transactions, governments may be tempted to use this information to monitor citizens, which can lead to potential abuses of power.

In addition to privacy concerns, the digital dollar could erode financial freedom. With the potential for increased government control over financial transactions, people may find their ability to freely transact limited.

The digital dollar could make it easier for the government to freeze or seize assets. Freezing physical assets in cash requires a court order, but a digital dollar could streamline this process. Thus, it raises concerns about due process and individual property rights.

The digital nature of the digital dollar makes it more susceptible to cyberattacks. This could have serious economic consequences, as trust is a fundamental component of a functioning financial system.

On the other hand, the implementation of a digital dollar may worsen financial inequality by widening the digital divide. Not everyone can access the technology required to use digital currencies, such as smartphones or reliable internet connections. This could disproportionately affect low-income and rural communities, leading to further financial exclusion.

The digital dollar would also foster a reliance on technology for access to financial services, which, in the case of failure or natural disasters, could leave vulnerable populations without access to their funds, increasing existing financial inequalities.

Is the Digital US Dollar the Future of Money?

The future of the digital dollar depends on thorough analysis and consultation with key stakeholders to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks. As technology advances and demand for digital financial services grows, the idea of a digital dollar could gain more traction. However, the path to mainstream adoption remains uncertain and policymakers need to consider the potential consequences of implementing a digital dollar.
