Bitcoin (BTC) breaks records! See how many daily transactions it handled

2023 is a record year for bitcoin in many ways. It reached the highest hashrate and mining difficulty, and on May 1 it broke the daily transaction record: 682,281 confirmed transfers. Despite the problems with the mempool, the network maintains a dynamic growth in the number of transactions, although the fees range from $ 1.46 to $ 2.42.

On May 7, there was an increase in fees due to the chaos in the mempool, 2023 became a record year for Bitcoin. At the beginning of the year, its hashrate – that is, the computing power used to mine the cryptocurrency – and the difficulty of mining reached record highs.

In early May, bitcoin broke another record, the #Bitcoin price action contained a breakout on May 11, and although the price rebounded afterward, it failed to regain the previous level reported by @beincrypto_en on May 16, 2023

New daily transaction record

On May 1, 2023, the Bitcoin network broke the daily transaction record, approaching the level of 700,000 transactions in one day. On that day, 682,281 confirmed transactions were made through the web. Just 9 days later, the number of confirmed daily transactions dropped to 671,668.

ycharts.com has informed us that not all record volumes were processed to perfection by the Bitcoin infrastructure. On May 7th, there was a sharp increase in fees due to chaos in the mempool, i.e. the pool of pending transactions, caused by more than 500,000 users’ unconfirmed transactions.

It was a record high regarding the number of transactions awaiting confirmation. However, since then, the congestion in the mempool has decreased, and now approximately 250 thousand transactions are waiting to be processed.

Number of Wallets with 1 BTC or More Reaches a Million

The banking crisis and the winter would have been the main drivers.

According to the analysis firm Glassnode, wallets with the amount of 1 BTC or more have experienced exponential growth during the last few months. This would be a clear indication that people took advantage of the low prices of 2022 to invest in this digital currency.

Last year, a severe winter hit the cryptocurrency market, sending the price of Bitcoin into a significant crash. From the $69,000 per coin reached in 2021, BTC fell to around $16,000 per unit. Although detractors of digital currencies pointed to this as the end of that cryptocurrency, the reality is that it has recovered, at least in part.

While part of the community panicked and sold their holdings for BTC, another number took advantage of the low prices. The latter allowed portfolios with at least one coin to reach a staggering one million. One of the things that this fact demonstrates is the confidence and maturity of this asset.

Rise of Wallets with More than 1 BTC

According to a study by the aforementioned firm, the figure of one million wallets with 1 BTC or more was reached on May 13. As already mentioned, as the price of Bitcoin fell, the number of people willing to get the figure of a coin in their portfolios increased.

Notably, the growth peaks of these portfolios were reached at times of greatest collapse. For example, in June the number of one-coin wallets rose sharply after the crash of Terra and the subsequent bankruptcy of numerous platforms. In the same way, in November, with the fall of FTX, another spike in the growth of these addresses was also experienced.

From early February, when Bitcoin crashed for the first time since its 2021 peak, to now, it has been added by 190,000 new wholecoiners, the holders of portfolios or wallets with 1 BTC or more.

It is worth mentioning that this figure should not be interpreted as a surge in retail purchases. Although this could be plausible, there are also numerous cases where multiple wallets of a coin belong to a single owner. Be that as it may, the number of such addresses continues to grow disproportionately every time there is a big stumble in the price of the pioneering digital currency.

Driving the Banking Crisis

If one element accelerated the growth of the so-called whole-coiners, though, it was the banking crisis at the beginning of March. With significant banks like SVB and Signature Bank failing, users panicked and proceeded to withdraw millions in deposits. Consequently, much of those withdrawals went to the cryptocurrency market.

Thus, Bitcoin, as well as other digital currencies, began to be seen as reserves of value in the face of complex situations. At the same rate of price growth, the nascent wallets with one or more digital currencies were also placed.

According to data from CoinGlass, cited by CoinTelegraph, almost 2 million bitcoins are in the portfolios of large platforms such as Binance or Coinbase. Likewise, some 3 million BTC would have been lost forever to deceased people who took the keys to their graves, as well as to people who lost or completely forgot them. This is good news for holders of 1 BTC or more in their wallets.

SEC Argues that it Should not Be Forced to Make Rules for the Cryptocurrency Sector

Coinbase’s chief legal officer Paul Grewal expressed concern over the SEC’s response, stating that they will happily continue to monitor the sector.

SEC argues that it should not be forced to make rules for the cryptocurrency industry

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has finally issued a formal response in court regarding Coinbase’s request for clear regulation for cryptocurrencies, stating that any regulation may take years and that enforcement actions will continue in the meantime.

According to court papers filed on May 15th, the SEC argued that it has no obligation to comply with Coinbase’s requirements outlined in its petition, and also argued that the company has asked for a complex set of reforms and rulemaking in an unreasonably short period of time.

SEC Denies Coinbase’s Injunction Request

The securities regulator has asked the court to deny Coinbase’s injunction request, arguing that the injunction is an “extraordinary remedy” and that Coinbase “does not have and cannot demonstrate a right” to the satisfaction of its claims.

Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, said in a Twitter thread that the filing may be the first time the securities regulator has explained its views on whether the SEC should create rules for the crypto industry. He also said there were still many things on the table that needed clarification.

Today the SEC responded to Coinbase’s petition for an injunction: it has asked the court to require the SEC to answer only yes, or no to whether it will undertake rulemaking for our industry

The SEC told the court that rulemaking can take years and that they are in no hurry, arguing that the SEC acknowledged that it will continue to use enforcement actions as a substitute for rulemaking for the foreseeable future, but not to worry: those enforcement actions may eventually ‘inform’ as-yet-unplanned rulemaking.

Just hours before the filing, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler gave a speech at the Financial Markets Conference, arguing that rules for cryptocurrencies were already published and sufficient.

Remarkably, in its recent presentation, the SEC distanced itself from any public commentary and the views of its chairman, although it appears to be more in relation to comments about Gensler’s views that most cryptocurrencies are classified as a security.

The SEC also said that Chairman Gensler’s public statements are not formal guidance or policy statements from the SEC and the public cannot rely on them as such, Grewal noted.

Ultimately, the regulator has argued that it should not be compelled to make rules for the cryptocurrency sector.

As Coinbase’s own filings make clear, considering the various possibilities it suggests that it is a necessarily complicated task. However, Coinbase filed its regulatory petition less than ten months ago, supplemented aspects of the petition less than three months ago, and sought to supplement the filing again only a few weeks ago.

Part of SEC’s argument for seeking denial is based on the assertion that Coinbase “cannot persuasively allege” that there has been any prejudice from the SEC’s failure to act on the petition since it was initially filed.

Bitcoin Mining: Laws, Lawsuits, and the Stock Market Marked This Week

0

This week was loaded with abundant news in the world of Bitcoin mining and it covered laws, lawsuits, and more.

The laws continue to put pressure on the nascent US Bitcoin mining industry with numerous incidents this week. Since the rebirth of many of these companies began, the authorities of the North American country seem to increase their force towards them. This week was no exception.

Still, the negative news failed to outweigh the continued business recovery and expansion. This is evident in the recovery of production and the better results of many companies. The explosiveness of mining ETFs on the stock market so far this year is clear evidence of good timing.

Once again this week laws and lawsuits took center stage in the Bitcoin mining industry. The five most important pieces of news are summarized below.

Marathon Receives New SEC Lawsuit

Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital Holdings has again been harassed by securities law regulators (SEC). The agency would have applied a new complaint against the company for alleged violation of the regulations related to securities or securities. According to Bloomberg, the irregularity would have occurred at its mining center in Montana.

This negative episode contrasts with the company’s recent announcement to expand its mining operations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In that country, the company would be preparing the provision of mining infrastructure under the liquid immersion modality.

Riot Blockchain Productivity Grows 200% This Year

Another company in the sector, Riot Blockchain, made a more positive announcement and it is a substantial improvement in its productivity in 2023. Among the 17 mining companies listed on the stock exchange, this one is at the top of production thanks to its consistent orientation towards the expansion of your business.

As reported this week by the Fool.com portal, so far this year the company has grown by more than 200% in terms of production. Analysts from the aforementioned medium consider that the company now has a good road ahead.

Washington Passes Law to Regulate Emissions from the Mining Industry

The objective of this law is to protect the environment from the high consumption of mining and data centers of technology companies. Thus, the regulation obliges customers in rural utility districts to reduce emissions from any electricity they purchase on the market. The latter in accordance with the deadlines approved in the state’s Clean Energy Transformation Law.

Bitfarms Accumulates 21,000 Mined Bitcoins with Clean Energy

Other positive news for the sector comes from Bitcoin mining company Bitfarms. The firm announced the issuance of some 21,000 bitcoins through clean energy. The news was released this week in a company statement in which they report that the goal of 21,000 mined coins was reached on May 7.

A Mining ETF Leads the US Market

A recent Bloomberg report indicates that of the five ETFs (unleveraged) with the best performance in 2023, all belong to the mining sector. Among these, the Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF stands out, enjoying a 119% rally so far this year. This demonstrates the growing appetite of investors for the crypto sector.

Colombia: DANE Reveals that GDP Grew 3% in the First Quarter of 2023

Colombia and Mexico are the major single-target economies in the region that have not yet halted interest rate hikes. Financial and insurance activities had the most important contribution to annual GDP growth and presented the highest growth rate. In 2022, Colombia reached such high inflation that it stood at 13.12%.

The National Statistical Administrative Department of Colombia (DANE) shared a report indicating that in the first quarter of 2023, the Gross Domestic Product in its original series grew 3.0% in the country, compared to the same period in 2022.

Colombia has been facing a major economic crisis, especially during 2023, and the figures revealed by the most recent DANE report do not prove otherwise. Although the fact that GDP grew by 3% is something positive, this figure reveals the significant slowdown that Colombia has been experiencing since the end of 2022.

At an official event, Piedad Urdinola, director of DANE, assured that GDP growth in Colombia is mainly linked to three sectors of the economy, among which are financial and insurance activities, artistic and entertainment activities, and public administration.

Out of the three abovementioned sectors, financial and insurance activities had the most important contribution to the annual growth of added value, and presented the highest growth rate (22.8%): “All the lines of economic activity had a positive growth, except for construction, which is the only one that has a decrease, and it is explained especially by the fall in civil works, we see the other lines still dynamic.”

GDP Grew 3%: This Has Been Its Behavior

DANE also revealed that, by reviewing the historical GDP data, the growth for the year 2022 would have been 7.3%, instead of the 7.5% data that was reported in past months.

Faced with these figures, the newspaper La República reported that growth and inflation are cooling in most of Latin America, but Colombia and Mexico are the main economies with single targets in the region that have not yet stopped the increases in interest rates.

El Banco de la República expects that. given that the GDP grew by 3%, the monetary policy authorities could consider cuts in interest rates, as inflation slows down towards its target. Last week, Finance Minister Ricardo Bonilla said he expects the central bank to discuss interest rate cuts in the second half of the year.

Historical High Inflation Levels in 2022

Inflation in Colombia was well above what was expected by the market during 2022. Month by month, inflation in Colombia closed in 2022 at 1.26%, leaving an increase of 0.53 percentage points, as compared to the figure reported at the end of 2021.

It is worth noting that, according to Bloomberg, on average, the market expected inflation to close in 2022 at 12.62% per year, while the projected monthly rate was 0.82% on average. These data arose from a survey carried out by Citi, in which 25 market experts are consulted.

This is the first time that Colombia reaches such a high figure after March 1999, when inflation reached 13.51%, since it stood at 13.12%. According to DANE, food contributed the most to the annual growth in prices in December 2022.
