Bitcoin and Ethereum Bearish Traders Are Back in Control

0

A bearish market structure has been pressuring cryptocurrency prices for the past six weeks, which pushed the total market capitalization to its lowest level in two months at $1.13 trillion.

According to two derived metrics, crypto bulls will struggle to break the downtrend, although analyzing a shorter time frame provides a neutral view with Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and BNB, on average, gaining 0.3% between May 12th and May 19th.

Note that the descending wedge formation initiated in mid-April could last until July, indicating that an eventual bullish breakout would require additional effort from the bulls.

In addition, there is the looming U.S. debt ceiling showdown, as the U.S. Treasury is rapidly running out of cash.

Even if most investors believe that the Biden administration will be able to reach a deal before the actual default on its debt, no one can rule out the possibility of a government shutdown and subsequent default.

Are Gold or Stable Currencies a Safe Haven?

Even gold, which used to be considered the world’s safest asset class, has not been immune to the recent correction, as the precious metal traded down from $2,050 on May 4th to the current level of $1,980.

Circle, the company behind the stable coin USDC, dumped $8.7 billion in Treasuries maturing in more than 30 days for short-term bonds and secured loans at banking giants such as Goldman Sachs and Royal Bank of Canada.

A Circle representative stated that “The inclusion of these highly liquid assets also provides additional protection for the USDC reserve in the unlikely event of a U.S. debt default.”

Stable currency DAI, managed by decentralized organization MakerDAO, approved in March an increase in holdings of its US Treasury bond portfolio to USD 1250 million to “take advantage of the current yield environment and generate more income.”

Derivatives Markets Show no Signs of Bearishness

Perpetual contracts, also known as reverse swaps, have a built-in rate that is generally charged every eight hours.

A positive funding rate indicates that long buyers demand more leverage. Yet, the opposite situation occurs when short sellers require additional leverage, causing the funding rate to turn negative.

The seven-day funding rate for BTC and ETH was neutral, indicating a balanced demand for leveraged longs (buyers) and shorts (sellers) using perpetual futures contracts. Interestingly, even Litecoin (LTC) did not show excessively long demand after a 14.5% weekly rally.

To exclude externalities that might have affected only futures markets, traders can gauge market sentiment by measuring whether there is more activity in call options or put options.

Options expiration can add volatility to the Bitcoin price, which resulted in an $80 million advantage for bearish traders at the last expiration on May 19.

A put-to-call ratio of 0.70 indicates that the put option open interest lags more bullish calls and is therefore bullish. Conversely, an indicator of 1.40 favors put options, which can be considered bearish.

The put-to-call ratio for Bitcoin options volume has been below 1.0 for the past two weeks, indicating a greater preference for neutral to bullish call options. More importantly, even when Bitcoin briefly corrected to $26,800 on May 12th, there was no significant increase in demand for protective put options.

On the other hand, there seems to be no reason for bulls to rush in and bet on a rapid cryptomarket recovery given the uncertainty in the macroeconomic environment. So, ultimately, the bearish are in a comfortable place according to derivative metrics.

Crypto Summary of the Week

Among the most outstanding news in the crypto world is the approval of the MiCA regulation by the European Union.

Below are the following five pieces of news from the crypto world that stand out:

  • The European Union approves MiCA regulation.
  • Coinbase temporarily pauses ETH staking reward payouts.
  • In Mexico, Binance and Despegar sign an agreement to pay for flights with cryptocurrencies.
  • Tether will increase its reserves in Bitcoin.
  • Bitcoin should be regulated like gambling, according to the British Parliament.

European Union Approves MiCA Regulation

The Council for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Union, made up of the finance ministers of all member states, vote unanimously in favor of adopting the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

The legislation establishes guidelines and regulatory requirements for the use of cryptocurrencies, related services and activities throughout the European Union. The scope of the legislation covers a number of cryptocurrencies, digital assets, utility tokens, and stablecoins.

The next step for MiCA to become European Union law requires the bill to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. MiCA will take effect in one year, which means that the regulations will finally become law in mid-2024.

Coinbase Temporarily Pauses ETH Staking Reward Payments

Due to a technical glitch, Coinbase temporarily halted reward payments for its ETH staking service. In fact, the problem was identified, and they indicated that they would resolve it in 48-72 hours.

It is important to note that the decision to stop the staking service is not related to recent actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against ETH staking violations.

In Mexico, Binance and Despegar Sign Agreement to Pay for Flights with Cryptocurrencies

Despegar, the leading Mexican travel company in Latin America, announced an alliance with the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, and with Inswitch, a popular integrated financial technology company, to implement the option to receive payments with cryptocurrencies within Mexico.

According to the travel agency, this new option applies to the entire Despegar offer, thus complementing its value proposition to improve the experience of its users and bring them closer to the crypto world.

In this regard, the general manager of Binance in Mexico, Frida Vargas, said: “Binance’s mission is to increase the freedom of money globally. And cryptocurrencies can help create extremely useful products and solutions.”

On the other hand, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao shared the enthusiasm and highlighted the many benefits that cryptocurrencies bring to the travel industry.

Tether To Increase Its Bitcoin Reserves

Tether International Limited (Tether), the issuing company of the most widely used stablecoin USDT, unveiled its new Bitcoin (BTC) investment strategy.

Specifically, Tether revealed that, starting this month, it will regularly allocate up to 15% of its realized net operating profits to the purchase of Bitcoin: “Tether’s purchase of BTC is part of its conservative and prudent approach to investment decisions aimed at strengthening, increasing and diversifying its reserves.”

In this regard, Paolo Ardoino, the CTO of Tether, explained that “the decision to invest in Bitcoin, the first and largest cryptocurrency in the world, is supported by its strength and potential as an investment asset.”

Bitcoin Should Be Regulated Like Gambling, According to The British Parliament

The Treasury Select Committee, which brings together several members of the UK Parliament, “strongly” recommended establishing regulations on retail investments in this asset.

According to what was expressed by this commission, they are “concerned” that the regulation of retail trade and investment in cryptocurrencies as financial services “creates a ‘halo’ effect that leads consumers to believe that this activity is safer than they think” it is, or that it is protected when it is not.

This Week in Coins: SEC and CBDC News Fuel XRP Rally During Slow Week

Bitcoin and Ethereum prices were flat for the third week in a row, while three projects, XRP, LTC, and LDO, posted notable rallies.

For the third week in a row, Bitcoin and Ethereum prices were flat as the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showed no sign of budging on its claim to be the industry’s top regulator.

Bitcoin (BTC) added a modest 0.3% to its value in the last seven days and is currently trading at $27,110.29. Likewise, Ethereum (ETH) only grew 0.6% and is currently changing hands at $1,825.

Top Cryptocurrencies This Week and the SEC

There were no substantial losses among any of the top thirty cryptocurrencies this week. Three projects registered notable rallies. XRP exploded 9.4% and entered the weekend at $0.46. The coin’s progenitor Ripple has scored a small court victory against the SEC in the latter’s ongoing lawsuit against the company for selling XRP as an unregistered security.

On Tuesday, Judge Analisa Torres blocked the SEC’s motion to seal documents linked to a speech by former SEC head Bill Hinman that explained why Bitcoin and Ethereum should not be considered securities. Torres said the documents in question were “subject to a strong presumption of public access.”

Ripple’s defense had previously defended Hinman’s case for XRP, but the SEC countered that Hinman’s speech represented Hinman’s personal views before unsuccessfully filing for the motion to seal the documents.

Ripple made headlines again on Thursday with the news that it has launched its central bank digital currency (CBDC) platform, aimed at central banks and governments looking to create their own centrally issued stablecoins, along with the financial institutions that will distribute them and the users, both retail and corporate, who will trade, hold and use them.

Another big mover was Litecoin (LTC), which exploded 13.2% this week and is trading at $91.29 right now. The Litecoin network recently rose in popularity as a result of Ordinals Inscriptions, a craze that brings NFT-style assets to Blockchains with unsophisticated smart contracts, such as Bitcoin and Litecoin.

Elsewhere, the Ethereum Lido DAO (LDO) staking token rose 13.7% this week, maintaining the momentum of last week.

SEC “Ready to Help”

On Monday, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler pushed back on claims that the SEC’s regulatory guidance for cryptocurrency companies was unclear. Speaking at an opening session, Gensler insisted that “the rules have already been published,” adding that his agency “stands ready to help them comply.”

The SEC’s position is widely perceived as bogus because the regulator is simultaneously bombarding the industry with lawsuits. Even one of the SEC’s own commissioners, Hester Pierce, has dissented a couple of times due to lack of clarity, most recently over her agency’s decision to shut down the Kraken staking platform and her proposal to change the definition of “exchange” to bring crypto companies to your jurisdiction.

Another noteworthy event on Monday was the SEC’s response to Coinbase’s request for an injunction, an order that would require the agency to clarify its rules on crypto regulations. Lawyers for the regulator urged the court to dismiss Coinbase’s application.

Apple and Google Threaten the Cryptocurrency Industry, According to Former Coinbase CTO

Former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan warns of systemic risk from Google and Apple. Srinivasan argued that the government could force these tech companies to produce the private keys of their users. The US and Chinese governments have one of the largest tranches of crypto, even though they have never bought any.

Cryptocurrency entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan has described Google and Apple as systemic risks to the industry.

The former Coinbase CTO tweeted this on May 19. According to him, these tech giants are major security threats because the federal government can cause them to become weapons.

If that happens, the government could “backdoor iPhone and Android to exfiltrate private keys,” he warned.

How These Tech Giants Threaten Crypto

Balaji noted that in a future where governments go bankrupt and turn to Bitcoin to finance their operations, the US government could force tech giants like Apple and Google to search for private keys in the servers, browsers, and devices under their control.

“This isn’t cyberterrorism, it’s cyberwar. It’s not some random hacker who manages to sneak out a file. It’s when the CEO of a company gives the lawful order to hack their customers. This is similar to what happened to 140M Russians designated enemies of the state in early 2022 — every tech company turned on their former customers,” explained Balaji.

Most tech companies would be forced to comply in this dystopian future because they have no other choice. He said the only safe option for crypto users would be the Linux operating system, even with its limitations.

On May 19, Balaji’s shared his thoughts by means of a lengthy tweet, whose excerpts are below:

“In 2010, even after Twitter and Facebook helped catalyze the Arab Spring, people still would have thought it implausible if you’d said “in ten years, the most important political issue in the world for a few days will be whether the President of the United States could tweet. But it was.”

Following Balaji’s statement, many noted that cryptocurrencies might need a phone, and recommended the recently launched Solana phone. Others, though, questioned why someone would store their private keys on their phones, as this is generally considered a poor security standard because both the Google and Apple stores are not end-to-end encrypted.

Governments Already Confiscating Illegally Acquired Crypto Assets

According to available information, the US and Chinese governments hold one of the most significant tranches of Bitcoin and other digital assets. The US government owns over 200,000 units of BTC valued at approximately $6 billion. The government acquired most of this BTC by confiscating it from cases that included the Silk Road BTC seizure, Bitfinex hack confiscation, among others.

Earlier this year, the US government seized $260,000 worth of digital assets from an NFT phishing scammer. The seized assets included two NFTs, Bored Ape 9658 and Doodle 3114, valued at more than $200,000.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government was reportedly holding approximately 194,775 BTC valued at roughly $3.9 billion. As of November 2022, the Asian country’s government held $6 billion in cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others.

Like the United States, China obtained most of its BTC holdings by seizing funds from the PlusToken Ponzi scheme.

Cardano Network Sees More Bullish Activity: Will ADA Price Make a 180 Flip?

In recent months, Cardano (ADA), the Blockchain platform renowned for its groundbreaking decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions, has been achieving notable progress.

Although the crypto market is currently near a red zone, the Cardano network is showing bullish sentiment amid a sell-off. Investors are now focusing more on potential altcoins, as Bitcoin and Ethereum prices fail to meet bullish expectations.

Recently, ADA bulls are putting an upward push on Cardano’s DeFi activities, which may soon act as a catalyst to push the altcoin’s price above its monthly resistance levels.

ADA TVL Reaches 400 Million

The Cardano DeFi ecosystem is steadily approaching a significant milestone, with nearly 400 million ADA, the native cryptocurrency of the Cardano network, locked in full value.

As of May 19, the current Total Value Locked (TVL) is 398.55 million ADA, equivalent to approximately $148.55 million, according to data from DeFiLlama. Additionally, it should be noted that the total ADA locked briefly exceeded 400 million ADA on May 14, though it fell back shortly thereafter.

Furthermore, there are indications from other sources that Cardano has already passed the milestone of 400 million ADA in total value locked. Total Value Locked (TVL) denotes the amount of cryptocurrency that is secured within smart contracts in the DeFi ecosystem, acting as an indicator of overall system activity and liquidity.

Cardano’s remarkable TVL of 400 million ADA shows the growing confidence and enthusiasm around the platform’s DeFi solutions.

Furthermore, there is a recent inflow of funds ($154) into the wallets of major ADA holders, marking the most substantial increase since early May. It is crucial to recognize, though, that this activity does not inherently guarantee a positive outcome.

What’s Next for the ADA Token?

During the previous week, ADA tried to break above the crucial resistance level at $0.38, but it fell short. The price seems to be consolidating within the range of $0.368 to $0.375, indicating the possibility of an imminent turning point.

The support level at $0.365 is of significant importance and is unlikely to be tested given the enthusiasm of the buyers. to acquire the altcoin during pullbacks. However, despite their efforts, the bulls have so far failed to break the key resistance level of $0.38.

Looking at the 4-hour price chart, the ADA price has faced a strong rejection near the EMA200 trend line at $0.38, pushing the price below its current Fibonacci level of 38.6%. The bears have now sent the price below the EMA100 level, which suggests that the bulls are losing confidence.

The ADA price is expected to soon test the support at $0.365 and start a rise above $0.38, which will result in a smooth bullish rally to $0.394.

According to the CryptoPredictions website, the ADA Price is forecasted for today (20.05.2023) to be in the $0.31543232683384 – $0.46387106887329 price range. Cardano is predicted to end today at $0.37109685509863.

It is worth noting that Cardano started in May 2023 at $0.39825922289073 and is predicted to finish the month at $0.27532996272923. During May, the maximum forecasted ADA price is $0.63881174494579 and the minimum price is $0.27532996272923.

Ripple’s Win in SEC Case

Judge Analisa Torres denies SEC motion to seal Hinman Speech documents.

There has been a judicial triumph for Ripple, as the US District Judge denied the SEC’s motion to seal documents associated with the William Hinman Speech. Specifically, the judge flatly denied the possibility that the documents presented by Hinman in 2018 were sealed and kept by the regulatory body.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that the SEC has been denied the motion to seal these documents. Last year, a judge denied the SEC’s attempt to protect the same documents after a court order for the SEC to produce the documents in question.

For better understanding, the Hinman Speech documents refer to a speech given by former SEC Division of Corporate Finance director William Hinman at the Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit in June 2018, where he allegedly stated that Ethereum is not a security.

Judicial Victory for Ripple against the SEC

On May 16, a motion by the US securities regulator to seal the controversial Hinman Speech documents has reportedly been denied. Giving Ripple victory over the SEC.

As a reminder, the SEC filed the motion to seal the documents on December 22 last year. Objecting that his mission outweighed the “public’s right” to access documents that have “no relevance” to the Court’s summary judgment decision.

However, under the most recent order, Judge Analisa Torres of the United States District Court ruled that the documents are “court documents” subject to a strong presumption of public access.

“Hinman’s speech documents would reasonably have a tendency to influence the Court’s decision on a motion,” said Torres.

Judge Torres also said that the court has rejected the SEC’s argument that the sealing of the documents is necessary to preserve “openness and candor” within the SEC, stating that the Hinman Speech documents “are not protected by deliberative process privilege because they do not address an agency position, decision or policy.”

The decision on Ripple vs. SEC may be imminent, legal experts say. In itself, attorney Fred Rispoli expressed his belief that the summary judgment ruling is likely close to completion. Furthermore, he finds the decision to release Hinman’s emails remarkable.

Particularly, Rispoli, believes that the probability of an outright victory for Ripple or the SEC remains low. But the tone of the ruling seems favorable to Ripple, raising hopes for the upcoming summary judgment ruling.

On May 16, Rispoli tweeted the following:

“…settle, yes, but I think the cat’s out of the bag on these docs and eventually some enforcement case would have gotten them publicly disclosed, if not here in Ripple. But the tone of this ruling is pro-Ripple, so let’s hope that carries into the SJ ruling!!!”

Brad Garlinghouse Celebrates

In this regard, Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, responded to the news via Twitter stating the following:

“Another win for transparency! Unredacted Hinman emails to be publicly available soon – stay tuned as the lawyers work through the mechanics to make that happen.”

However, Eleanor Terrett, a journalist for Fox Business, noted that the SEC has the option of filing an interlocutory appeal of the decision. Likewise, the lawyer, Jeremy Hogan, stressed that the SEC now has ten days to file a reconsideration.
