New Texas Cryptocurrency Bill Would Really Hurt Miners

A new bill is making its way to the Texas House of Representatives that could make it harder for crypto mining companies within the state to gain access to the funds and resources they need to stay afloat and function properly.

The new bill would ensure that energy costs for the largest crypto miner in the state rise by up to $30 million each year. Additionally, miners would only be able to provide a limited amount of power to the Electric Reliability Board of Texas (ERCOT), and bitcoin miners would also not be able to access the same property tax breaks currently available to industrial standard power consumers.

Texas Crypto Bill: The Wrong Move

The situation is bizarre, with bitcoin mining profits already down by as much as 60 percent over the past year, largely due to the ongoing crypto winter and crashes many digital asset prices have incurred.

Companies like Riot Blockchain, one of the most prominent crypto mining firms in the country, say the power credits they currently hold make a big difference in how much they pay and how much they earn each year. Representatives of the firm issued the following statement:

“These credits are recognized in power reduction credits in the statements of operations, out of cost of revenue, but they significantly reduce the company’s overall cost of mining bitcoins. By offsetting power outage credits with costs of revenues, net costs as a percentage of mining revenues were 39.7 percent and 24.7 percent for the years ended December 31, 2022 and 2021, respectively.”

The bill has already passed the Senate, though it would have to be signed into law by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has proven himself a fan of bitcoin and crypto in the past. It is therefore unlikely, analysts say, that it will react favorably to the bill, although it is impossible to assume that this could not happen for some reason.

Helping Miners Relocate

Texas has long been a major center for bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining, so it’s surprising that such a bill would find its way through the state’s political spectrum.

The state has been heavily mining for about two years, largely because many miners have been forced to leave their native China. That country made crypto mining illegal in 2021, with several heading to Texas because of the state’s big, vast, open landscapes and its cheap electricity prices.

While the situation hasn’t been perfect, the sudden influx of miners has given the Texas economy a big boost. It has also created jobs and opened windows of opportunity on all sides of the state, so it seems very strange that an anti-crypto bill like this would gain support.

Local Criticism Present

Critics of the local industry in Texas are not very enthusiastic about past legislative moves, which could help explain how and why the new bill has passed.

“From our perspective, what they’re doing here is getting a new stream of value into the industry that would otherwise start to get squeezed out of the market,” Adrian Shelley, director of Public Citizen of Texas, has declared.

Public Citizen Texas is a nonprofit advocacy group that has actively lobbied against coal burning in Texas, as well as the state’s interest in expanding its network of nuclear power plants.

“This is an industry that is not bringing clear or tangible value to a state,” Shelley said. “[While] it has all these exotic mechanisms to extract value from it.”

Bitcoin: Why Could This Trader Mentality Hinder BTC’s Latest Rally?

According to data from IntoTheBlock, 73% of BTC holders were profitable as of July 6. However, the BTC net trade flow and indicators were not in line with the positive market sentiment around BTC.

Bitcoin [BTC] investors felt a sense of accomplishment after Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock declared that BTC was an international asset. Furthermore, he also claimed that he saw BTC play a role in the digitization of gold. However, there was more to celebrate than just this.

According to a tweet posted by IntoTheBlock, all eyes in the market were on BTC as of July 6. Furthermore, the infographic also showed that 73.57% of BTC holders were in a profitable position with 47.90% of weekly transactions. What was also noteworthy was that 29% of the total BTC supply had not moved in the last five years.

The tweet in question read like this: “All eyes are on Bitcoin as many altcoins continue to struggle! Check out our latest infographic showcasing key on-chain metrics. What do you think is next for BTC?”

Greetings to The Coin King

To add to the aforementioned sentiment, a tweet from analyst Willy Woo also highlighted an important point about BTC adoption. According to Woo, adoption stood at 4% of the world’s population and was much higher. Woo thus explains the reason why BTC would surpass any other asset adoption in the next two to three decades:

“Why Bitcoin will outperform in the next decades? Adoption S-curve on money, which is half of everything. Currently 4% of world population, it’s going much higher.”

Despite so much joy and confidence surrounding the king coin, BTC’s long/short ratio remained in a rather disappointing position. Recently, the long/short ratio of BTC was 0.9681. 49.19% of holders were long, while 50.81% of short holders.

BTC’s rise to $31,000 may have led to a change in investor mindset that may have encouraged some traders to take profit and exit the market. However, the small difference between the percentage of long and short headlines indicated that only some investors changed their minds.

Are the Bears Trying to Sneak in?

Although the sentiment around BTC may be sublime, its price action could scare away those hoping for bulls to go all out. At the time of writing, BTC was exchanging hands at $30,371, which was 0.64% lower than its opening price for the day. The indicators also painted a bleak picture.

BTC’s moving average convergence divergence (MACD) moved above the zero line. However, the MACD line (blue) and the signal line (red) crossed each other. This was an indication of a change in movement, as this could put the bears in a position of control.

Furthermore, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) was also in a downward position and stood at 59.72. Its move towards the neutral line indicated some selling pressure in the market. Furthermore, the BTC Money Flow Index (MFI) also came in at 50.79 strengthening the aforementioned notion, strengthening the narrative that some holders might be making a profit was the net flow of BTC exchange.

Recently, BTC net exchange flow stood at 1,567, which was not a great sign for BTC. When the inflow exceeds the outflow, it means that more traders were depositing their BTC into exchanges than taking it out of exchanges.

Since the inflow exceeded the outflow as of July 6, it could mean that the ongoing BTC price correction could continue. This would be until BTC sees a resurgence in buying pressure, or its net flow of exchange sees more flow out than flow in.

Uruguay and Argentina Agree to Expand Operations in Local Currencies

The agreement was reached within the framework of the LXII Meeting of Ministers of Economy and Presidents of Central Banks of Mercosur. The meeting took place in Puerto Iguazú, province of Misiones (Argentina). It seeks to rely on the idea that the reduction of transaction costs to trade in local currencies.

Argentina and Uruguay have signed a letter of intent aimed at promoting the development of low-cost financial instruments for operations involving the Uruguayan peso and the Argentine peso. The event was attended by the president of the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU), Diego Labat, and the president of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA), Miguel Pesce.

The agreement was reached within the framework of the LXII Meeting of Ministers of Economy and Presidents of Central Banks of Mercosur. The meeting took place in Puerto Iguazú, province of Misiones (Argentina).

Details of the Agreement between Uruguay and Argentina

According to official information, the primary objective of the agreement is to incorporate payments related to trade in services (except payments related to financial services), transfers for family support, as well as to allow the transfer of resources to be denominated indistinctly in pesos. Argentine or Uruguayan pesos.

Few data are known from what was confirmed by the officials representing both countries. What is known is that the technical and operational aspects and the requirements for the use of these new options will be stipulated through agreements between both institutions.

The commitment establishes that the central banks of both countries work to expand the operations admitted in the Local Currency Payment System in force between Uruguay and Argentina.

This agreement seeks to rely on the idea that the reduction of transaction costs to trade in local currencies, through the Local Currency Payment System, represents a stimulus for foreign trade operations.

The Local Currency Payment System allows economic agents in Uruguay and Argentina to become familiar with the use of the other country’s currencies. In addition, it promotes progress in the economic integration process. Finally, it aims to strengthen the links between the institutions, increasing the liquidity and efficiency of the exchange market between the Argentine peso and the Uruguayan peso.

The Local Currency Payment System in force between both countries allows payments for goods trade operations documented in the currency of the exporting country. Likewise, transfers classified as retirement and pensions are admitted, when there is a bilateral agreement signed between the pension institutes of both countries.

Dollar and Inflation in Uruguay and Argentina

In regards to the parity to the dollar, the differences are notable between Uruguay and Argentina. In the first case, for every dollar it is necessary to have 37.52 Uruguayan pesos.

On the other hand, in Argentina there are multiple prices (the one with the highest reference is the blue, which reaches 492 Argentine pesos). In addition, there is a stock that does not allow the purchase, and a cultural obsession with the dollar.

Regarding inflation, the year-on-year data in Uruguay stood at 5.98% last June, remaining within the target range established by the Government led by Luis Lacalle Pou, which goes from 3% to 6%.

The problem in Argentina is much more acute, as the most recent year-on-year data on inflation positions it in 114%. In fact, the Central Bank consultants placed it in almost certain three digits by the end of this year.

The Most Daring Blockchain Hacks Ever

The distributed and decentralized ledgers known as Blockchains have been hailed as impenetrably secure by many in the cryptocurrency community. However, some of these systems are not as impregnable as originally thought.

As public awareness of cryptocurrencies has grown and token valuations have skyrocketed in recent years, hackers and scammers may have had additional incentive to find a way to steal digital currencies, given the potential of even higher payments one day.

In fact, stealing cryptocurrency—again, when tokens are hugely popular in part because they’ve been marketed as highly secure ways to transact and store value—has become big business.

In 2022, a record $3.8 billion worth of crypto tokens was stolen globally. A vast majority of stolen tokens (around 80% last year) were taken from decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, and two-thirds of DeFi thefts involved cross-chain bridging protocols. These bridges allow users to trade assets across different Blockchains and typically hold large reserves of different tokens, potentially opening them up to increased attention from thieves and reducing security within a single Blockchain ecosystem.

Nonetheless, Blockchain and crypto hacks seem to be bolder than ever. Below is a closer look at the most brazen Blockchain and cryptocurrency hacks in history.

Binance Suffers BNB-Related Hack

In late 2022, Binance suffered losses of around $570 million, when hackers were able to exploit a smart contract bug that left the Blockchain vulnerable. The crooks used the BSC Token Hub cross-chain bridge to create additional Binance Coins (BNB) and withdraw around 2 million of these tokens, which are native to Binance.

FTX Implodes and Thieves Take Advantage

One of the boldest crypto heists is also one of the most recent. In November 2022, cryptocurrency exchange and hedge fund FTX dominated the news when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, eventually collapsing entirely. On the same day, the thieves stole more than $600 million from the company’s cryptocurrency wallets. The brazen attack may have capitalized on internal turmoil, prompting the company to later announce to users that their own apps were hacked and they should remove them. Unfortunately, the theft left many FTX account holders without a token.

The Biggest Hack in History: A Blockchain Gaming Platform

To date, the largest crypto hack occurred when $625 million worth of Ethereum and USDC stablecoin were stolen from the Ronin Network, an ecosystem affiliated with Blockchain gaming platform Axie Infinity. US officials blamed the attack on the Lazarus Group, a North Korean state-backed hacking collective. The hackers were reportedly able to access private keys and falsify transactions on the Blockchain.

Great DeFi Attack on the Poly Network

One of the largest DeFi-related attacks took place in the summer of 2021. A single hacker exploited a vulnerability in the Poly Network’s DeFi platform to steal $611 million in a variety of tokens. The Poly Network developers pleaded with the anonymous hacker to return the funds. Interestingly, two days after the attack, the hacker returned roughly half of the stolen tokens, acknowledging that they had targeted Poly “for fun.”

Changes In Sight

Despite these hacks from the past, a change is in sight in the cryptocurrency theft landscape. In 2023, not only are thefts down by roughly two-thirds compared to Q1 2022, but an increasing number of hackers are returning stolen tokens to claim a “white hat” bounty—in effect, a ransom that companies are willing to pay for the safe return of their lost goods.

Users will have to wait to know for sure if this information is true, or if it is a smokescreen.

Colombian citizens were affected by an alleged scam on a trading platform. The complaints ensure that Solain does not allow them to withdraw their money.

A group of citizens from Salento, Quindio, were allegedly affected by investing in a platform called Solain. According to the complaints, the company initially promised a return ranging from 2% to 3% daily. However, everything resulted in a scam on the trading platform because those affected did not receive what was promised.

Trading Platform Scam: Users Can’t Withdraw Their Money

The RedMás Noticias media outlet reported that in Salento, Quindio, a group of more than 2,000 people decided to invest their money in Solain. The foregoing after receiving information from said trading platform, which promised great performance among those who deposited their money there.

Despite the fact that in the first six months some of those who invested received juicy profits, people have not received the money from their investment for almost a week.

Currently, users are speculating that the platform delivered some returns at the start to encourage investment. However, Solain promised that they would receive the resources on July 1st, but no one has received that money yet. The most recent information points out that the platform would be requesting the investment of more money, so that people can withdraw their savings. The abovementioned shows that Solain’s model would be closer to that of a pyramid than to that of a trading platform.

What Does Solain Say about It?

Upon accessing the Solain website, it is possible to find a message that tells users about a new condition. The company ensures that to allow more members enough time to activate their accounts, they will extend the activation deadline from July 5 to July 10 at 23:59.

Other Cryptocurrency Scams in Colombia

This year in May another scam related to the crypto world was reported in Colombia. A married couple from Riosucio, Caldas, decided to invest a large sum of money in an alleged crypto asset business. The business turned out to be a millionaire cryptocurrency scam, linked to a company called Goarbit.

In April 2023, a publication shared by and alleged news site reported that the Colombian businessman Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo would have invested in cryptocurrencies to increase his fortune. The idea of the content was to ensure that users clicked on the link to the newspaper El País, but were actually entering the ‘BEAUTYVISBLY.COM’ site.

Valkyrie Resubmits Bitcoin ETF Application

Valkyrie has filed an application with the SEC to list a spot Bitcoin ETF, backed by Coinbase.

American asset manager Valkyrie has submitted a new application to list a Bitcoin ETF in the United States. And it has included a significant update to its proposal by establishing a Shared Surveillance Agreement (SSA) with Coinbase.

Such change in strategy comes in response to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) request for greater clarity and detail in the requests.

A spot Bitcoin ETF is an investment fund that is traded on a stock exchange and that aims to replicate the performance of the Bitcoin price. By investing in a spot Bitcoin ETF, users can gain exposure to Bitcoin without having to buy, store, and insure the cryptocurrency on their own.

Valkyrie Partners with Coinbase to Enhance US Bitcoin Fund Application

Valkyrie had first applied for a Bitcoin ETF in 2021, and refiled the paperwork with the SEC on June 21. Currently, as of July 3, Nasdaq has filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) a document detailing its proposed rule change to allow the listing of the Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund, a spot ETF.

The request includes information about an agreement recently signed with Coinbase on June 30, which would allow Nasdaq complementary access to data related to Bitcoin spot trading.

The Experts’ Opinion

In this regard, Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas reported that Valkyrie filed a new application using a 19b-4 form, which is similar to the one used by BlackRock in the past.

Likewise, Balchunas has highlighted that the wording of Valkyrie’s Shared Surveillance Agreement (SSA) seems more aggressive, and underlines the importance of mentioning Coinbase as the main Bitcoin exchange in Spot. These details could be significant to the evaluation of the application by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and could have an impact on the final decision.

On July 5, Balchunas tweeted the following:

“Valkyrie also re-filed their 19b-4, like BlackRock they mention specific SSA agreement w/ Coinbase, even seems more aggressive (more use of the words ‘executed’ and ‘agreement’) They also, like BlackRock, call Coinbase largest US spot bitcoin exch h/t @NateGeraci.”

On July 5, Vildana Hajric quoted James Syffart, Bloomberg Intelligence EFT analyst, who said that “This is something I’ve been looking for. Valkyrie is one of the only Bitcoin ETF filers from the recent past that hadn’t submitted a new 19b-4 in this wave.”

Some Considerations

Valkyrie is looking to enter the Bitcoin ETF market, but the final approval of its product will depend on the decisions of the SEC. So far, the regulatory agency has not approved any spot Bitcoin ETFs, but there has been a significant increase in filings in recent weeks.

Valkyrie’s attempt to list the shares of Valkyrie’s Bitcoin Fund on the Nasdaq is based on language included in BlackRock’s second filing attempt, specifically in regards to the Nasdaq’s surveillance swap deal with Coinbase.

Firms have sought to establish a spot Bitcoin ETF in the United States for a decade, as Gemini co-founder Cameron Winklevoss recently highlighted. But with BlackRock knocking on the SEC’s door, prominent figures in the crypto world such as Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire believe a regulatory green light is imminent.

In closing, only time will tell if the SEC leans towards approving a spot Bitcoin ETF, which could have a huge impact on the cryptocurrency market and investing in general.
