Vitalik Buterin Proposes Decentralized Solutions and Improved Security for Ethereum Staking

Vitalik Buterin presented a proposal that improves security within staking pools. Its two-tier model features node operators and delegators. This proposal aims to revolutionize the Ethereum staking landscape.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has presented a series of solutions to strengthen the decentralization of staking protocols and pools. He also proposed solutions to strengthen the security of these protocols against possible attacks.

These suggestions follow a previous proposal shared by Buterin regarding possible changes that could be made to the Ethereum network.

Addressing Concerns Related to Decentralization

Vitalik Buterin’s recommendations directly address existing challenges within the staking process. Addresses concerns about the risk of centralization among node operators and the load on the Consensus Layer.

According to Buterin, the node operator selection process in various staking pools suffers from decentralization issues. The current Layer 1 (L1) consensus mechanism also faces overhead when authorizing transactions.

To mitigate these challenges, Buterin advocates adopting a two-tier staking system similar to the models used by projects like Rocketpool and Lido. This system features node operators and delegators as key participants.

Node operators would function as validators, running nodes to create new blocks and committing a specific amount of ETH to the staking pool.

Delegates, on the other hand, would become members of the pool and lock their assets with their chosen node operators. In this setup, delegates gain autonomy to select their preferred node operators.

Improved Security of Staking Pools

Beyond addressing centralization concerns, the proposed two-tier system promises to bolster security within staking pools. The system erects a formidable barrier against potential attackers by allowing delegates to determine node operators.

Those looking to become node operators without delegator support would have to commit a significant portion of their ETH, possibly up to 1/3 of the total staking, which could amount to over 2.08 million ETH.

Consequently, any hacking attempt would incur a huge cost to the attacker. Buterin emphasizes that the implementation of these recommendations could alleviate the problems affecting the Ethereum L1 staking protocol. It allows stakers to select their preferred nodes, contributing to a more decentralized and consensus-based system.

Furthermore, the proposed model significantly reduces the number of signatures required from 800,000 to 10,000, which encourages an increase in the number of node validators.

Privacy Pools and Zero Knowledge Proofs

The idea behind “Privacy Pools” is that it would allow Ethereum (ETH) users to demonstrate that they received funds without revealing specific sources of funding.

Thus, users can simply post ZK-Proofs (zero-knowledge proofs) to verify that their cryptocurrencies do not come from illegal sources. That is, you could demonstrate your honesty without showing transaction history.

“The ultimate goal [is] to create a privacy-enhancing infrastructure that can be used in a regulated environment.”

Constant Ideas to Develop Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin has shown great research activity whose purpose is to improve the Ethereum network. During a conference held in South Korea, Buterin presented his vision of the obstacles that stand in the way of the development of the blockchain network.

According to the developer, the main problem with Ethereum is the high level of centralization of the network nodes. In this sense, Buterin believes that the search for its optimal solution may take approximately 20 years.

Previously, Vitalik Buterin had mentioned some factors without which Ethereum, in his opinion, will be doomed to failure.

FTX Hacking Update: Perpetrator’s Strategy Change

The infamous attack on FTX, a major crypto exchange, is back in the spotlight. The latest events indicate a change in strategy by the hacker, which is causing quite a stir and reviving speculation.

FTX, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world, experienced a devastating crash in 2022 that resulted in a significant amount of Ethereum being stolen. Original estimates put losses at up to $400 million. However, after a thorough audit, FTX confirmed losses of approximately $323 million.

On September 30, @lookonchain posted the following on X:

“FTX Accounts Drainer is moving $ETH! FTX Accounts Drainer has transferred 5K $ETH ($8.37M) out in the past 3 hours. And FTX Accounts Drainer currently has 180,735 $ETH ($302.5M) left in 13 addresses.”

Perpetrator Changes Tactics

Renowned on-chain analyst Lookonchain made a surprising observation on October 6. The person responsible for the FTX hack has stopped using THORChain to launder his assets. They have now turned their attention to Threshold Network.

@lookonchain explained this situation via X (formerly Twitter) in these terms:

“After @THORSwap suspended swaps, FTX Exploiter started swapping $ETH for $tBTC and cross-chained to the Bitcoin network through @TheTNetwork. So far, FTX Exploiter has swapped 75,636 $ETH($124M) for BTC assets and cross-chained to the Bitcoin network.”

The data suggests that the attacker converted a staggering 3,000 Ether (ETH), equivalent to $4.9 million, into tBTC via Threshold. They then successfully laundered around 75,636 ETH (worth around $124 million) into Bitcoin. An alarming sum of 109,485 ETH, or almost $180 million, is still lurking in his possession.

Why the Change?

Threshold presents a decentralized bridge connecting Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum. It allows users to convert their assets into tBTC, an ERC-20 token equivalent to the value of Bitcoin. The hacker’s first choice was THORSwap.

In a sudden turn of events, though, THORSwap suspended its operations on October 6, to prevent further illegal activities. This decision, based on extensive internal dialogues and guidance from legal experts, aims to curb illegal transfers until a foolproof security measure is developed.

THORSwap posted its decision on X, which partly reads like follows:

“Yesterday, following a careful evaluation of the situation and consultation with advisors, legal counsel, and law enforcement, the decision was made to temporarily transition the THORSwap interface into maintenance mode. This action was taken to swiftly curtail any further potential illicit activity. THORSwap will remain in this mode until a more permanent and robust solution can be implemented to ensure the platform’s continued security and integrity.”

Previously, reports showed that the hacker had funneled at least $38 million worth of ETH through THORSwap and another privacy-focused platform, Railgun.

Culprit Behind the Mask Remains Unknown

The mysterious figure who orchestrated this great robbery is still unknown. However, rumors in crypto circles point to the possible involvement of controversial FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Facing charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, Bankman-Fried’s current legal battles have only fueled this speculation.

However, Bankman-Fried remains steadfast and vehemently denies any connection to the robbery. However, the synchronicity of the significant cash movements and their trial has raised curiosity about possible internal complicity.

The FTX heist saga unfolds, revealing complicated strategies and a world of speculation. As the industry watches closely, there remains hope that clarity will emerge and ensure such breaches become a thing of the past.

Banking Chronicle: The Japanese Economic Bubble

0

Below is how Japan was hit by one of the worst economic bubbles in history.

As it is known, Japan suffered greatly during World War II. The United States decided to use nuclear weapons to end the conflict. To avoid a disastrous situation later, it was necessary to help the country rebuild. This aid materialized through the Marshall Plan, in a payment equivalent to 18 billion current dollars. The objective was to allow Japan to recover, and to prevent it from falling into a state of advanced decrepitude, as it happened to Germany between the two wars.

At the same time, the Japanese, whose patriotic sentiment is no longer in doubt, were called by the government to participate in this same reconstruction. An astonishing savings rate then developed on Japanese soil.

The savings rate exceeded the consumption rate. The collection of Japanese savings by national banks allowed them to considerably facilitate credit and thus more easily finance reconstruction projects.

The Race Forward

This accumulation of fiat currency by the Japanese went hand in hand with a growing expansion of international trade and Japanese exports (electronics and automobiles in particular) facilitated by the undervaluation of the yen.

Between1985 to 1990, the Japanese found it profitable to borrow from local banks, at very low rates, and then exchange their money and invest in dollars. This was called “carry trade”. Basically, people borrowed in yen at advantageous rates and then invested in financial products in dollars that offered a higher return than the interest they owed to theor Japanese bank.

The Plaza Agreements and the Bubble Creation

In 1985 the Plaza agreements were signed. It was a joint intervention by several countries, including Japan, which would give in to pressure from Western countries on an agreement aimed at depreciating the American dollar against the yen.

The consequences of such an agreement were immediate and the yen appreciated 51% against the dollar in a few months, a domino effect that resulted in an extremely substantial drop in Japanese exports.

In Tokyo, accommodation in certain exclusive neighborhoods had close prices, of around 100 million yen per m² (that is, about 712,000 euros per square meter).  At the bubble’s peak, Tokyo’s real estate valuation alone was higher than the entire United States. At the time, the phenomenon was so unreasonable that Tokyo was called “the priceless city.”

Faced with an almost uncontrollable situation, the Japanese Central Bank decided in 1989 to change its approach. In just one year, it will more than double interest rates, which will go from 2.5% to 6% in August 1990.

This brutal decision will negatively affect the stock market, which will begin to fall sharply. However, many investors attracted by the promises of easy money had mortgaged their properties to invest in the stock market.

The Japanese Economy Suffers the Shock

Between 1990 and 1997, the Japanese had lost the equivalent of 9 billion dollars. The result was an increasing number of company bankruptcies during 1998 and 1999. Even the sectors in which Japan was a world leader could not absorb the shock related to the bursting of the bubble.

It took Japan more than fifteen years to recover from this great financial crisis and it began to emerge shortly before the bursting of a new bubble, this time in the United States: that of subprime mortgages in 2008. Such crises clearly show that the economy is too serious a concept to be left in the hands of institutions with an often-short-term vision.

Central Bank of Venezuela: Its Maneuvers to Try to Stop Inflation

The Central Bank of Venezuela has applied what is known as a dirty floating policy where it intervenes in the exchange market. Throughout 2023, it has increased the monetary mass, making it go from 22 billion in January to 46 billion in July.

In the last 7 years, inflation has been one of the great topics of interest in Venezuela. Between 2017 and 2021, there was hyperinflation that became one of the longest in history. Surprisingly, this stopped in 2022 due to a series of maneuvers applied by the Central Bank and the government.

After 4 years of hyperinflation, in November 2021 a unique event occurred in the recent history of Venezuela, inflation stopped. For that month, the Central Bank reported monthly inflation of 6% and year-on-year inflation of 769%. This concluded 4 years of hyperinflation in the country.

However, with the beginning of the second half of 2022, reality returned. First, the bolivar suffers a devaluation in September, taking it to 11 bolivars per dollar. Meanwhile, inflation was picking up speed again, rising from October to reach 37.2% by December.

According to reports from the Central Bank, in January this year, inflation reached 39% and the dollar was devalued by 35%, making the dollar cost 17 bolivars.

A Structural Problem of the Central Bank of Venezuela in Stopping Inflation

While it is true that Venezuela had an economic improvement between 2021 and 2022. However, what really happened is that the local economy took a breather. Informal dollarization allowed Venezuelans to find refuge for their income and for it to increase due to the widespread use of the dollar.

The economy, though, continued to have a problem since, as will be remembered, under Maduro’s regime, Venezuela’s GDP contracted by 90%. Therefore, a 15% increase is not a real improvement for the economy.

Furthermore, with basic services in ruins, outside the international financial market and with PDVSA, the state oil company, having poor production results, the production of wealth in Venezuela remains limited. This creates a perfect context for slow improvement, but if a series of bad monetary policies applied by the Central Bank also arise, everything gets worse.

The Three Failed Monetary Policies of the Central Bank of Venezuela to Stop Inflation

Since 2021, the Central Bank has applied 3 policies. On the one hand, the Central Bank is in charge of controlling the exchange rate by injecting reserves into the market. On the other hand, the Central Bank controls the deficit through monetary issuance that raises monetary liquidity to worrying levels.

In the midst of all this, credit is restricted, reducing investment and consumption, but a fundamental fact also occurs: the bolivar has lost its function of being a store of value.

After years of inflation and devaluation, the bolivar has become an asset despised by Venezuelans. For this reason, every time economic agents receive payments in bolivars, they go to the exchange market to take refuge in the dollar.

The monetary mass is skyrocketing, the Central Bank is constantly burning reserves. The government continues to have a large fiscal deficit that is maintained with issuance and the bolivar does not stop depreciating, generating more monetary mass every time agents go to the exchange market. All this opens the door to the return of inflation.

A year ahead of presidential elections and with a negotiation process with the United States, Venezuela is approaching a key moment for its economic aspirations. It remains to be seen what happens with these negotiations.

BAYC Will Undergo Restructuring, Co-Founder Confirms

0

The company Yuga Labs, creators of BAYC, has announced a restructuring that has led to layoffs in its American workforce. The startup, valued at $4 billion, is rethinking its priorities amid an NFT market with growing uncertainty. The decline in ApeCoin price is an indicator of declining demand for tokens associated with NFT projects.

The company Yuga Labs, behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT phenomenon, has announced a restructuring that has led to layoffs in its American workforce. The startup, valued at $4 billion, is rethinking its priorities amid an NFT market with growing uncertainty.

Yuga Labs CEO Daniel Alegre recognized that the company had expanded too internally and needed to focus on its core competencies, seeking external collaborations. The restructuring, which affects only employees in the United States for now, continues to be evaluated in relation to the company’s international teams.

Yuga Labs: “BAYC Will Look to Restructure More Specific Projects”

Despite these changes, Greg Solano, co-founder of Yuga Labs, noted that the team still has more than 120 employees. However, both Alegre and Solano admitted that the company had spread itself across multiple projects and that some product launches did not meet their standards:

“I’m sure many of you have seen the news that Yuga is undergoing a restructuring today. A difficult day, obviously. It hurts to be separated from team members who have been in the trenches with us. But we needed to make some changes to the company to ensure we are set up for long-term success.”

One of the projects mentioned is “Otherside,” a metaverse game in development. Yuga Labs has announced several technical and creative partnerships for its development, and recently made a strategic investment in spatial computing startup Hadean.

Alegre emphasized the importance of Otherside’s strategy and announced that all the company’s digital content will be linked to this platform. Additionally, teams working on projects like Meebits and 10KTF will be integrated into Otherside.

Although Alegre acknowledged that the company has not shared enough public information about Otherside, he promised more updates on this platform. He also mentioned the challenges facing the industry and the global economy in general.

BAYC Restructuring: Changes for the Metaverse, Gaming and NFTs,

Alegre, who had previously been president of the video game company Activision Blizzard, also noted that the company had faced difficulties in some of its launches of video game development projects due to its attempt to handle everything internally – that is, not resorting to measures such as outsourcing.

Additionally, he noted that progress on the planned metaverse platform, Otherside, had not been sufficient, despite being first announced in 2022. As demand for NFT collectibles has declined over the past year, prices for Bored Apes and other “blue chip” NFTs experienced a sharp drop, as did the price of ApeCoin.

The restructuring is a reminder of the volatility and constant evolution of the NFT market. The decline in ApeCoin price is an indicator of declining demand for tokens associated with NFT projects in a saturated market. Finally, Yuga Labs’ restructuring may encourage other companies in the NFT market to evaluate their own structures and strategies.

Yuga Labs, which grew significantly thanks to the success of Bored Ape, is now faced with the need to adapt and find a sustainable model in an ever-changing NFT market.

JP Morgan Chief Market Strategist Warns of Possible 20% Stock Market Drop

The divergence between the S&P 500 stock index and real 10-year rates was approaching the steepest level in nearly two decades, with the exception of 2020.

On October 5, 2023, Marko Kolanovic, chief global market strategist and co-head of global research at JP Morgan, appeared on CNBC’s “Fast Money” to discuss a variety of topics, including his views on the stock market, stance of the Federal Reserve. on interest rates and performance of mega-cap stocks compared to mid-cap stocks.

With a Ph.D. Kolanovic, a doctor in theoretical high-energy physics from New York University, brings a quantitative perspective to market analysis. His team has earned top rankings in global institutional investor surveys and he personally ranks No. 1 in equity derivatives in America.

Prior to JP Morgan, he held key positions at Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch. Known for his accurate short-term market forecasts, CNBC has labeled him “The Man Who Moves the Markets” and Bloomberg has called him “Gandalf.” In 2020 he was inducted into the Institutional Investors Hall of Fame.

Market Outlook

Kolanovic began by stating that he has a somewhat negative outlook on the stock market. While he didn’t explicitly say a recession is inevitable, he did mention that he believes it will “eventually happen.” He also noted that the stock’s upside to downside ratio isn’t particularly favorable right now.

Economic Indicators

Kolanovic noted that the labor market is strong but highlighted signs of stress in the consumer sector, such as rising delinquencies on credit cards and auto loans. He suggested these could be early indicators of economic challenges, although he did not specifically say consumer confidence is eroding.

Interest Rates

Kolanovic spoke about the current level of interest rates, in particular the 4.7% yield on ten-year Treasury bonds. He stated that these rates do not align with historical market multiples and mentioned that they could rise a little more. However, he did not express explicit concern about current rate levels.

Market Dynamics

Kolanovic spoke about the divergence between the Nasdaq and other markets. He noted that while the NASDAQ and mega-cap stocks have performed well, other markets have been flat or down. He offered two courses of action: invest in lagging stocks if a recession is not believed to occur or avoid mega-cap stocks if a recession is expected.

Positioning and Feeling

Kolanovic highlighted that market positioning is important and has been an important factor this year. He noted that volatility has been decreasing, which has been a tailwind for the market. However, he did not specifically say that the rising volatility is a sign that tougher times are ahead.

Volatility as an Asset Class

Kolanovic briefly addressed the topic of volatility as an asset class. He mentioned that it is a challenge to have the right volatility because it is usually negative. He suggested investors could use it to generate returns by selling short-term options.

Goldman Also Warns of Risk for Stocks Due to Higher Interest Rates

The Goldman Sachs Group Inc team joined its peers at Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co. in warning that high rates could lead to further declines in stocks.

Such decoupling implies a reduction in the return from holding riskier stocks compared to a safe-haven asset, such as US government bonds. This “may further limit stocks’ ability to digest further rate increases,” the strategists, including Andrea Ferrario and Christian Mueller-Glissmann, wrote in a note dated Oct. 2.
