Ghosts Are Real: Aave’s GHO Officially Becomes Stablecoin After Reaching $1 Level

0

Since its launch 6 months ago, GHO has struggled to retain its ideal stock price.

It’s been almost seven months since Aave officially launched its overcollateralized algorithmic stablecoin. Using the symbol GHO, the stablecoin traded all this time below the $1 peg due to low demand and other technical difficulties. Now, GHO has finally reached its fixed value.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov made the announcement via X (formerly known as Tweeter) on February 6. In his tweet, Kulechov congratulated the community for enabling what he called a “building block for DeFi and payments.” Next to the message in X, Kulechov attached an image showing the price of GHO at $1.

Stablecoins are all the rage and people are using them all over the world. But, with its popularity, many questions arise. There are also many questions surrounding regulations, which are being talked about at the highest levels of government.

A Not-So-Stable Stablecoin

A total of $2 million worth of GHO was minted on the Ethereum network when the stablecoin launched in July 2023. While the majority of the Aave community considered the launch a success, many cryptocurrency users considered GHO to be a failure.

Due to its algorithmic nature, GHO’s volatility was too high for many to consider it a true stablecoin. GHO’s value was as low as $0.917 on October 24, just three months after its launch, a price that largely held until November of that year.

While the price of the stablecoin has risen 8.6% above its all-time low at the time of writing, this volatility has prevented it from going mainstream. Despite this, GHO has generated over $2.1 million in annualized revenue and has seen major improvements over the months, such as the GHO Stability Module.

These improvements seem to be working so far, as GHO’s volatility has certainly decreased in recent weeks. In fact, the value of the stablecoin has managed to stay above the $0.995 mark as of this writing, which would be a good performance if it were to hold for a longer period of time.

What Is GHO?

Aave describes the stablecoin as a “decentralized, overcollateralized” asset. The stablecoin is backed by various collateral assets, including Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, Ether.

Collateral could be other cryptocurrencies and tokens, but also certain real-world assets (real estate or banking financial products, for example).

“GHO is fully governed by Aave DAO, who together establish the rules and policies that govern GHO,” the exchange states. This makes GHO similar in operation to the DAI stablecoin.

Unlike some of the most popular stablecoins, GHO does not have a redemption mechanism that allows its holder to exchange it for its equivalent in non-crypto assets. The lack of a redemption mechanism means that users can only trade their GHO at market value on secondary markets.

Popular stablecoins often back their value with a dollar reserve, ensuring that the 1-to-1 peg is always maintained. GHO, on the other hand, attempts to maintain this peg by using a cryptocurrency-based overcollateralization.

Another Big Win for DeFi

While GHO is not the first decentralized algorithmic stablecoin, its open source code, decentralized governance, and overcollateralization are similar to DAI and other coins. What sets GHO apart from its competitors is its multi-collateral banking, which allows users to use any Aave-compatible cryptocurrency to mint.

Some regulators view stablecoins as a systemic risk, although this is far from certain. Indeed, the banking system is under pressure and stablecoins seem like a small asset class given the size of Western financial markets.

Bitcoin Breaks Above $46,000 and Targets $50,000 as Bullish Sentiment Returns

BTCUSD is currently trading at $46,165.

For the first time since the trading debut of spot ETFs on January 11, Bitcoin (BTC) surpassed $46,000. According to data from Coingecko, BTC had risen 3.4% the previous day to $46,075, maintaining a 6% increase over the previous seven days.

Bitcoin Flexes Its Muscles and Reclaims the $46,000 Level

Despite the approval of several highly anticipated exchange-traded funds aimed at strengthening its institutional legitimacy, Bitcoin’s 2024 year is off to a rocky start. However, things are looking up as Bitcoin is trading back above the $46,000 territory.

Laurent Ksiss, cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETP) specialist at CEC Capital, mentioned that if the current bullish trend continues, breaking the $45,000 mark could bring profitability closer to early investors in the BTC ETF. He also suggested that this momentum could lead some investors to take profits, which could trigger a reversal and test the $42,000 to $40,000 level.

After the introduction of 10 ETFs in January, the BTC price saw an unexpected drop. The value plummeted after momentarily touching $49,000 when one of the funds, Grayscale, began transferring significant portions of its cryptocurrency to Coinbase.

This was due to the fact that before Grayscale converted the Bitcoin Fund ETF into an open-ended fund, investors had to hold their shares for a minimum of six months before being able to withdraw cash. Many investors were eager to cash out and redeem their shares when it became an ETF in January.

Whales’ Appetite for BTC Increases

Grayscale sold huge amounts of Bitcoin, the price of which dropped. At one point it was trading below $39,000. However, it appears that the sell-off is over and Bitcoin is rising once again, in part due to large holders acquiring the asset.

Meanwhile, Markus Thielen, head of research at Matrixport and founder of 10x Research, says Bitcoin (BTC) is heading towards $48,000 in the near future following its breakout driven by a strong history of gains during the Chinese New Year festival.

Since bitcoin typically rises more than 10% around Chinese New Year, starting on February 10, the following days are extremely important statistically, according to Thielen’s research on Thursday. Every time traders purchased bitcoins three days before the start of the Chinese New Year and sold them 10 days later, the Bitcoin price increased over the previous nine years, according to Thielen.

Bitcoin Expected to Reach $50,000

In a related development, LMAX Digital anticipates Bitcoin will continue to rise, perhaps reaching the $50,000 mark. According to LMAX Digital, technically speaking, Bitcoin has broken out of a range and may point to a rise to a new yearly high of up to $50,000.

Using Elliott Wave theory, Thielen projected greater upside for bitcoin in the future, stating that Bitcoin has begun its latest and fifth impulsive leg of its rally, aiming to reach $52,000 by mid-March, after completing its wave 4 retracement and correcting to $38,500.

On the other hand, renowned cryptocurrency analyst Eric Krown Crypto said that in the short term, there could be a downward move towards $40,000. He also talked about the ambiguity surrounding Bitcoin’s price action, wondering whether it will reach $55,000, or fall to $30,000.

Krown warned that while the statistical analysis may be biased downward, the situation is still evolving. Despite his bullish stance, the analyst advises caution and encourages investors to wait for market confirmation before making major trading decisions.

Argentine President Postpones Dollarization

Although dollarization and free convertibility of currencies are the final objectives of his administration, implementing them within the current year would be impractical to clean up the country’s economy.

in a recent interview, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, ruled out the option of implementing his own dollarization plan during 2024. Milei is reducing the implementation of his libertarian reforms.

Analysis of Argentine President Election and Its Impact on Cryptodynamics

The closure of the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) and the replacement of fiat currency, originally key promises during his presidential campaign, will have to wait until at least next year to be implemented.

In a recent interview with local media, Milei explained that the BCRA sanitation process is progressing slower than expected. Furthermore, closure could only occur at the end of June if the current pace is maintained.

He also indicated that adapting the financial system model will require a significant period of time, potentially up to a year.

However, Javier Milei confirmed that dollarization and the withdrawal of the Argentine peso remain key objectives of his administration. He mentioned the relatively small size of Argentina’s monetary base as a factor that will facilitate the implementation of dollarization.

The issue of dollarization has not been discussed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This is despite the organization recently approving a $4.7 billion disbursement as part of a refinanced payment plan for Argentina’s $44 billion debt.

Milei Challenges Argentina’s Political Order

In Argentina, the debate over the controversies is heating up, while President Javier Milei leads a brave reform initiative that divided the country. After a heated and prolonged debate, Argentine legislators approved the comprehensive reform package proposed by Milei, marking an important milestone.

This legislative triumph is just the beginning, as the bill now heads to the Senate for a decisive showdown.

Javier Milei’s rise to power was driven by widespread frustration with Argentina’s tumultuous economic situation. With an inflation rate exceeding 200% and poverty affecting 40% of the population, Milei’s bold economic reforms, including a significant devaluation of the peso and drastic benefit reductions, represent a bold move.

However, these reforms are not immune to criticism. Detractors, such as opposition deputy Leandro Santoro, evoke the memory of the 2001 crisis as a stark warning of the dangers of unrestricted market reforms.

As the nation finds itself at this delicate crossroads, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has supported Milei, approving a large $4.7 billion bill for Argentina, indicating international confidence in his reformist agenda.

La Rioja Trusts ‘Bocades’ to “Survive”

The situation in the province of La Rioja, however, tells a different story. The province, highly dependent on fiscal redistribution and with a significant portion of its workforce employed in the public sector, is in a desperate situation. This pushes Governor Ricardo Quintela to implement radical measures.

In a brave gesture, Quintela launched the local currency “bocades”, almost a currency intended to address the province’s fiscal problems, complementing public salaries and facilitating local transactions.

However, this initiative did not go unnoticed, as economists and critics alike question the feasibility of introducing a provincial currency into an economy already struggling with hyperinflation. The national government declared the initiative illegal, putting at risk the already fragile relationship between La Rioja and the central administration.

Despite the challenges, Quintela remains steadfast in his position, arguing that sandwiches could provide a much-needed economic stimulus for the province. Skepticism persists, though, and many fear this experiment will exacerbate the financial instability affecting Argentina.

Another Crypto Friendly Bank Closes Its Digital Asset Services and Support

Vast Bank closes its cryptocurrency app and services to return to traditional banking following accusations of “unsafe practices.” British bank JPMorgan’s Chase banned cryptocurrency payments in September 2023 amid growing concerns about scams. The bankruptcies of Silvergate and Silicon Bank in early 2023 were the catalysts for regulators to go after banks offering crypto services.

Vast Bank has announced the termination of its crypto banking application and services, marking a significant setback in its once pro-cryptocurrency stance. This decision underscores the growing trend among financial institutions to prioritize stability over innovation in the face of regulatory challenges.

Vast Bank, a pioneer in integrating cryptocurrency transactions with conventional checking accounts, recently declared the closure of its Vast Crypto Mobile Banking app.

Another Crypto-Friendly Bank Withdraws Support

The measure, effective from January 31, 2024, involves disabling the app from the Google and Apple app stores, leading to the liquidation and closure of all digital asset accounts.

This marks a fundamental change for Vast Bank, which initially launched its crypto-friendly app in 2019 in partnership with Coinbase and SAP. It allowed customers to manage cryptocurrencies alongside traditional banking services.

The bank’s pivot aligns with a broader industry trend, as seen with bank JPMorgan Chase UK, which, amid escalating scam concerns, banned crypto payments in September 2023. The banking giant took action to prevent British customers from transferring funds to cryptocurrency companies and blocked cryptocurrency trading with Chase debit cards.

This move by the JPMorgan-owned bank reflects growing apprehension within the financial sector, despite cryptocurrency trading being a financial activity regulated by the new UK Financial Services and Markets Act.

The journey towards digital banking has been fraught with challenges for Vast Bank. In late 2023, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency issued a consent order citing the bank’s cryptocurrency activities. The official consent order stated the following:

“The Comptroller finds, and the Bank neither admits nor denies: The Bank has engaged in unsafe or unsound practices, including those related to capital; strategic and capital planning; liquidity risk management; project management; books and records; interest rate risk management; computer controls; new product risk management; and controls of their custodial accounts.”

This regulatory scrutiny was most likely a key factor in the bank’s decision to return to its core banking services.

Crypto Banks: The Spark that Set the Fire

The bankruptcies of cryptocurrency-friendly banks such as Silvergate and Silicon Valley Bank in early 2023 further shook the sector. These incidents were the main catalysts for increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States, prompting a re-evaluation of crypto services by banks.

The bankruptcies of these banks highlighted the risks associated with digital assets, and led to a tightening of regulatory policies and greater attention to risk management.

In light of these developments, Vast Bank’s exit from the cryptocurrency sector serves as a warning, and highlights the need for financial institutions to balance innovation with strict risk management, and focusing on complying with regulatory standards.

As the bank returns to traditional banking practices, it leaves behind a legacy of pioneering digital asset integration. Their venture, while promising, ultimately proved unsustainable in the current regulatory climate.

While institutions like Vast Bank rethink their participation in the cryptocurrency space. Therefore, the financial sector in general strives to find a balance in taking advantage of opportunities.

Crypto Market Resurgence: New Data Shows Average Investors Earned More Than $800 in 2023

A recent study shows that the typical investor made less than $1,000 in profits, marking a recovery from the previous year, where losses were the norm amid a severe bear market.

The cryptocurrency investment landscape witnessed a notable change in 2023, as revealed by a study by CoinLedger, a prominent cryptocurrency tax software platform. Compared to the tumultuous market conditions in 2022, the average crypto investor in 2023 experienced a modest but significant rebound in their financial results.

Investors’ Average Crypto Earnings in 2023

CoinLedger analysis shows that the average profits earned by digital currency investors in 2023 amounted to $887.60. This figure represents a substantial recovery from 2022, when investors faced an average loss of more than $7,000 due to the collapse of several major crypto companies and a broader market crash.

The resurgence of the digital currency market has been underlined by the “resilience” and “adaptability” of investors and the industry. David Kemmerer, CEO of CoinLedger, revealed that the study, compiled from data from its user base of more than 500,000 investors, provides insight into this changing landscape.

According to Kemmerer, a large number of these users, around 80%, are from the United States, and fewer from Australia, Canada and other countries. Despite being the most popular digital currency in the world, Bitcoin’s market position was the third “most dumped” digital currency in 2023, according to CoinLedger.

In this context, “most willing” refers to the digital currency that investors sell or trade most frequently. It particularly indicates the digital assets that experienced the highest volume of selling or trading activity within the specified time period.

Therefore, in this case, Bitcoin ranked third in terms of how often investors sold or traded it during that period. In particular, this suggests a tendency among Bitcoin holders to hold onto their assets longer than investors in other digital currencies.

On the other hand, Ethereum led in terms of number of blockchain transactions imported into tax software, followed by Bitcoin, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, and Avalanche C-Chain.

Global Crypto Market Growth Trajectory

As the next Bitcoin halving approaches, Bitcoin (BTC) has shown a steady increase in its value, indicating a strong recovery of the digital currency market from the challenges it faces in 2022, particularly those that they involve the fall of FTX and Terra Luna, among others.

Over the past year, Bitcoin has seen an 88% surge, going from trading below $25,000 this time last year to trading above $43,000. This increase, which has risen to almost 10% in recent weeks, highlights the market’s growing strength.

This substantial increase in the value of Bitcoin has had a positive ripple effect throughout the global digital currency market. Other major altcoins, including Ethereum, have also seen significant growth – more than 40% last year. This remarkable performance of these leading crypto assets has boosted the global crypto market capitalization from just under $1 trillion at the beginning of last year to over $1.7 trillion.

Furthermore, some analysts believe that this growth trend is just the beginning of the cryptocurrency market. A crypto researcher known by the pseudonym Ether Nasyona recently predicted, via X, that the total market capitalization of global cryptocurrencies could reach approximately $8 trillion by 2025.
