Jebara Igbara, Also Known as ‘Jay Mazini’, Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Cryptocurrency Fraud

Igbara perpetrated multiple fraud schemes and defrauded investors of at least $8 million.

Jebara Igbara, also known as “Jay Mazini”, who claimed to be a Crypto on Instagram, was sentenced by US District Judge Frederic Block to seven years in prison on wire fraud and money laundering charges. The ruling also requires Igbara to forfeit $10 million.

Jay Mazini Labeled “Crypto Fraudster”

Igbara, 28, carried out multiple fraud schemes and defrauded investors of at least $8 million, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to the charges in November 2022.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated that Igbara’s prosecution revealed him as a fraudster who used his popularity on social media to swindle investors out of millions of dollars. Peace added that Igbara targeted his religious community, exploiting their trust to spend and gamble their hard-earned money. The hope is that today’s ruling will deter fraudsters like Igbara from victimizing investors for personal gain, he added.

Through a company called Halal-Capital LLC, Igbara ran a Ponzi scheme targeting Muslims, prosecutors said. He posted on his Instagram account and other social media offering above-market prices for cryptocurrencies and sent doctored images of bank transfer arrangements that suggested he had sent the money. Actually this was not the case.

Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Thomas Fattorusso characterized Igbara as a “crypto scammer” who created a fake online presence to convince unsuspecting victims to invest in his schemes.

Fattorusso noted that Igbara defrauded New York’s Muslim community out of millions and subsequently spent and gambled the funds. He highlighted that Igbara’s actions ignored the victims of his scam, but the sentence ensures that he will spend years in prison for his criminal acts.

Igbara Orchestrated Overlapping Fraud Schemes

From 2019 to 2021, Igbara maintained a prominent presence on Instagram as “Jay Mazini”, gaining almost one million followers. He presented himself as a prosperous investor and businessman while sharing content related to his Muslim faith, presenting himself as devout.

Igbara showed off his alleged wealth by sharing videos on Instagram in which he distributed large sums of cash to shoppers in supermarket checkout lines, employees at a fast food restaurant and a woman he met at the airport. and that she had lost her bag.

Igbara executed an investment fraud scheme targeting members of the Muslim-American community in New York. He requested funds from them for alleged investments in stocks, resale of electronic products and sale of personal protective equipment. In reality, Igbara was orchestrating a Ponzi scheme, diverting almost all funds for personal expenses, luxury vehicles and gambling.

Igbara then initiated a second fraudulent scheme to maintain the illusion of profitability and retain investors. He announced on his Instagram and other social media platforms that he would pay above-market prices for various cryptocurrencies.

After receiving cryptocurrency from victims, Igbara fabricated bank transfer confirmations, falsely stating that he had sent money for the cryptocurrency as promised. In reality, no payment was made and Igbara simply pocketed the cryptocurrency sent by his victims.

“Igbara was a Crypto scammer. Not only did he create a fake online presence to pretend he was a wealthy Crypto investor, but he used his Instagram persona as proof of success in convincing his unsuspecting victims to invest in his schemes,” pointed out Special Agent in Charge of Investigation Internal Revenue Service Criminal Thomas Fattorusso in the statement.

Fake News about Repression in Nigeria? CBN Denies Notice on Freezing Crypto Accounts

The purported notice “warned” deposit money banks (DMBs), non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs), other financial institutions (OFIs), and the public about the risks associated with crypto transactions.

Recent reports reported on an alleged notice issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The document warned financial institutions that interacting with cryptocurrencies and facilitating operations for cryptocurrency exchanges was prohibited.

The news raised alarm bells when, four months ago, Nigeria lifted the ban preventing banks and other financial institutions from operating accounts for virtual asset service providers (VASPs).

The Latest Crackdown on Cryptocurrencies Turned Out to be a Hoax

On Tuesday, reports began to spread about the CBN’s intervention into financial institutions that facilitated operations for crypto exchanges in Nigeria. The document “reminded” regulated institutions that they were prohibited from dealing in cryptocurrencies or facilitating exchange operations due to “previous regulatory directives on the subject.”

However, the aforementioned ban was lifted in December 2023 and was followed by strict guidelines that allow banks and other institutions to operate with cryptocurrencies under a set of rules. The purported notice ordered the DMB, NBFI and OFI to identify and report all individuals and entities within their system that were “transacting or operating cryptocurrencies” on the exchanges. Binance, OKX, KuCoin and Bybit were listed as banned platforms.

According to the document, listed exchanges and other platforms that trade the Nigerian naira in the peer-to-peer (P2P) market were not licensed to operate in the country. As such, these platforms were “under investigation” by the CBN and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The notice ordered financial institutions to ensure that accounts handling cryptocurrencies were “placed on PND (Post No Debit) instruction for six months.” Furthermore, it warned that all suspected agents who traded “USDT illegally” could be arrested.

The document stated that any failure to comply with the new directive would result in “severe regulatory sanctions” for the parties involved. However, the Central Bank of Nigeria clarified on Wednesday that the alleged circular was “false content”. In an X publication, CBN stated that the information was not authentic and did not come from the institution.

Nigeria’s EFCC Freezes 300 Accounts

Despite the CBN notice being found to be fake, the EFCC recently froze over 300 illegal forex accounts operating on a P2P platform. According to a local report on Tuesday, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, revealed that the commission suspended the accounts on Monday following a court order.

The president explained that the agency discovered a “worse scheme” than the Binance system, which has been under a regulatory crackdown in the country. The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange and two of its executives are currently facing four charges of tax evasion in Nigeria.

According to the report, Olukoyede stated that “there are people in this country who are doing worse than Binance.” As a result, these actions were taken to “ensure the security of the foreign exchange market and protect the economy.”

The EFCC considers P2P financial trading to be a “scheme” that operates outside official financial corridors as, in the last year, more than 15 billion Nigerian naira, worth about $11 million, passed through one of the currency platforms.

Matt Hougan’s Projections for Bitcoin: Lower Volatility and 250K Target After the Next Halving in 2028, and other News

Among his main expectations are a reduction in volatility, an increase in portfolio participation and a target price of more than $250,000.

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise, has shared his predictions for Bitcoin ahead of the next halving, scheduled for April 2028. Hougan believes that the decrease in volatility will be driven by the entry of exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Since they tend to attract institutional investors who make more stable investments.

Hougan expects Bitcoin allocation in investment portfolios to increase by up to 5% or more due to the growing adoption of ETFs. Since the launch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in January, they have accumulated more than $12.5 billion in net inflows, and Hougan thinks they are just getting started. He believes the growth of these ETFs could be similar to what gold ETFs experienced after 2004.

The chief investment officer also suggested that central banks could start allocating some of their reserves to Bitcoin in the next halving cycle. This is because BTC cannot be seized like other assets and is more practical than gold for payments and settlements. Which could make it attractive to central banks in a multipolar world. If this happens, according to Hougan, it could be a significant change for Bitcoin and lead to a considerable increase in its price.

United States Considers Sanctions on Chinese Banks for Supporting Russia in War against Ukraine

Given the increase in geopolitical tensions, the United States government is studying the possibility of imposing sanctions on certain Chinese banks, in order to disconnect them from the global financial system. According to a Wall Street Journal report, these sanctions seek to address concerns about the financial support these banks could be providing to Russia. Thus facilitating trade that strengthens its military capabilities against Ukraine.

The main cause of concern for the United States is that China, despite claiming that it has not provided weapons to Russia since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, continues to export dual-use products, such as chips and machinery, that could strengthen the Russian army. These potential sanctions are seen as an “escalation option” that would be implemented if diplomatic efforts are not effective.

Renzo Protocol EZETH Token Experiences Sharp Drop in Uniswap After Season 1 Conclusion

The Renzo protocol’s EZETH token saw a steep price drop on the decentralized exchange Uniswap, hitting a low of $688 before regaining its peg with Ether. This event, which occurred after the closure of Season 1 of the Renzo Protocol, generated concern in the crypto community due to the risk of decoupling in liquid restaking tokens (LRT).

Pseudonymous cryptocurrency analyst Tommy explained in a post on X that the liquidation was likely caused by the conclusion of the first season. Which led many users to sell their EZETH tokens to recover ETH and participate in other LRT farming protocols.

Crypto Investor Brock Pierce Predicts Bitcoin (BTC) to Hit $1 Million

American billionaire and businessman Brock Pierce is involved in numerous controversies. According to the billionaire, Bitcoin will reach $1 million or fall to zero and everyone will forget about it. When purchasing cryptocurrencies, it is advisable to be careful and research various sources of information before making investment decisions.

The president of the Bitcoin Foundation and managing partner of Blockchain Capital changed his vocation: he went from starring in Disney films to being one of the leaders of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

As a promoter of both Bitcoin and other digital currencies, he has gone to numerous universities to explain their benefits. A true believer in the future of virtual money, he walks the talk in theory and delivers in practice: In addition to the companies he has founded, he has invested in more than 30 companies in the blockchain ecosystem, and helped raise more than $200 million for entrepreneurial companies.

Brock Pierce, a well-known figure in the world of cryptocurrencies, comments on the future price of Bitcoin, suggesting the possibility of exceeding $1 million for a full unit of digital gold.

However, it is worth calmly considering the predictions of this billionaire. Brock Pierce, known for his enormous wealth, also accumulated through cryptocurrencies, is also associated with many controversies.

Brock Pierce’s Failures and Successes

Although he’s been in the industry for years, Pierce isn’t as clean as a whistle. The American businessman is involved in numerous controversies. His participation in EOS, although it raised more than 4 billion dollars during its pre-sale (ICO), was not successful.

The project he co-created is currently ranked 95th in the CoinMarketCap ranking with a market capitalization of less than $1 billion. Brock Pierce, not only involved in EOS but also known as a co-founder of Tether, has a checkered history in the cryptocurrency landscape.

Although his participation in the development of the USDT stablecoin helped it achieve success, becoming the largest on the market, not all projects with his participation achieved such results.

The changes in direction in the cryptocurrency industry, in which he is actively involved, and his experience with the EOS project, raise questions about the credibility of his forecasts.

According to Brock Pierce, How Will Bitcoin Behave in the Future?

Pierce suggests two possible paths for the future of Bitcoin. In the context of future prices, it presents a zero-sum approach. According to the billionaire, Bitcoin will reach $1 million or fall to zero and everyone will forget about it. Still, due to its questionable past performance, not all investors should take its predictions seriously.

Brock Pierce presented his observations on future Bitcoin prices in an interview with Fox Business. The interviewee enthusiastically evaluated the growth possibilities of Bitcoin this year. According to the billionaire, BTC has a chance of surpassing the $150,000 mark in the coming months.

“I think we’ll probably see a little over $100,000. I think $150,000 is probably a reasonable goal for this year. In the long term, it’s $1,000,000 or more. This is a binary result. Bitcoin will go to zero (not really) or surpass $1,000,000 unless something happens. So it’s really hard to judge in terms of what will happen over time,” Pierce says.

The billionaire’s optimism about the future of Bitcoin may be of great interest. However, before purchasing cryptocurrencies, it is advisable to be careful and research various sources of information before making investment decisions.

Bitcoin Rainbow Chart Predictions: BTC to $450,000 by 2025?

Bitcoin Rainbow Chart shows the accumulation of BTC signals. Prediction models and analysts are predicting a major BTC rally in the coming months.

Bitcoin [BTC] rallied more than 68% in Q1 2024, but Q2 headwinds have eaten into some of the gains. With BTC falling 7% in the second quarter and stuck within the $60,000 to $71,000 price range, it is crucial to assess whether it is overvalued or undervalued using the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart.

So far this year, BTC has added over $22,000, which translates to gains of 50.3%. However, second-quarter headwinds, including interest rate fears and tensions in the Middle East, spooked investors and partly explained last week’s declines.

Now that Bitcoin is back above $66,000, the big question is: is it too expensive or is the current value a bargain?

Bitcoin Rainbow Chart “Accumulate” Signal

According to the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart, the current BTC price level was within a so-called “accumulated” zone.

The Bitcoin Rainbow Chart visually represents the valuation of Bitcoin based on historical data. In particular, it is a logarithmic scale that includes colored bands that show the buy (blue, green) and sell (orange, yellow) zones.

In the last three halving cycles, BTC was massively undervalued immediately after the halving. Although the current BTC price level is slightly higher on the scale than the last few cycles, it is within the “accumulation” zone. Therefore, BTC is still undervalued and not overheated, according to the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart.

Furthermore, the Stock-to-Flow (S/F) model indicates further upside potential for the price of Bitcoin. The model evaluates future BTC prices by dividing its circulating supply by the annual number of coins mined.

The model has been able to predict BTC prices with a fair variance in the past. It predicts that BTC will cross $100,000 in the third quarter of 2024 and reach over $450,000 by the end of 2025. However, given the new US BTC Spot ETF factor and macroeconomic pressures, crossing S/F projections with nuanced expert analysis can also offer crucial insights.

Why Analysts Believe BTC Can Reach $200,000 in 18-24 Months

Interestingly, Standard Chartered predicts that Bitcoin may reach $200,000 in the next 18 to 24 months. In a recent interview, Geoff Kendrick, head of digital asset research at Standard Chartered, saw the maturity of BTC spot ETFs as a determining factor.

Correlating BTC ETFs and gold, Kendrick noted that the price of gold rose 4.3x as its ETF flows matured. According to Kendrick, if the BTC ETF flows expiration follows the path of gold; therefore, “that could take us into the $150,000 to $200,000 range.”

According to CryptoQuant founder Ki-young-juel, the “new whales” have now doubled down on their BTC accumulation spree. However, massive whale demand is not the only good news for BTC future prices. The macro overview is also aligned.

BitMEX founder and Maelstrom CIO Arthur Hayes predicts a favorable summer for BTC, citing “sovereign bond market” issues. The CIO accurately predicted last week’s sell-off, citing the US tax season and the Bitcoin halving.

Although tensions in the Middle East also played a role in last week’s declines, Hayes’ projections show that the macroeconomic outlook looks excellent for Bitcoin heading into the summer.

Bitcoin price prediction models, including the Bitcoin Rainbow Chart and analysts, point to further upside for BTC in the coming months. If these predictions are confirmed, then the current BTC prices will be a great bargain.

Green Bitcoin Mining: PayPal Proposes Reward System for Sustainable Miners

PayPal promotes green Bitcoin mining by promoting the use of renewable energy sources through additional rewards for miners. The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining, which currently produces 85 million metric tons of CO2 per year. In addition to mining, PayPal modified protections for NFT transactions and partnered with Triple A to improve the diversity of digital payments.

PayPal’s Blockchain Research Group has joined forces with Energy Web and DMG Blockchain Solutions to support “sustainable” Bitcoin mining. According to the document, the collaboration “presents an opportunity to accelerate the transition to clean energy” using cryptoeconomic incentives.

This initiative leverages crypto economic incentives to encourage the use of low-carbon energy sources, a crucial step given Bitcoin’s significant environmental impact. Bitcoin mining is estimated to produce 85 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

PayPal Seeks to Accelerate Sustainable Bitcoin (BTC) Mining

The initiative emphasizes the need for sustainable practices in Proof-of-Work (PoW) networks. The proposed system rewards miners who verify transactions using renewable energy with additional Bitcoin, using a mechanism where transactions are preferentially directed to “green miners.”

These miners, identifiable through public keys designated as “green keys,” will receive transaction fees and locked BTC rewards. This setup promotes greener mining practices and improves the overall efficiency and security of the Bitcoin network.

Along with this green initiative, PayPal has announced significant changes to the management of non-fungible tokens (NFT). Starting May 20, PayPal will remove buyer and seller protections for NFT transactions over $10,000.

The decision has been made due to concerns about order fulfillment verification and the high volatility of the NFT market. Transactions below this amount will continue to be protected, as long as they meet certain conditions.

Additionally, as part of a strategic collaboration with Singapore-based Triple-A, PayPal is set to increase the diversity of digital payments by integrating its stablecoin, PYUSD, into Triple-A’s offering. This integration, scheduled to launch at the end of June, aims to strengthen PayPal’s presence in the cryptocurrency market.

PayPal Investigation into Bitcoin Mining

In a recently published article, PayPal’s Blockchain Research Group (BRG) proposed “the possibility of a more sustainable future” in Bitcoin mining. The investigation revealed that as of April 2, data estimates that annualized emissions exceed 85 million metric tons of carbon dioxide due to Bitcoin’s proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism.

This race and its demand for robust computing power requires a significant amount of electricity. Consequently, the use of carbon-based energy sources by miners “results in the underlying greenhouse gas emissions footprint of the Bitcoin network.”

The document suggests routing on-chain transactions to “green miners” via low transaction fees with a BTC reward “locked” in a multi-signature payment address. The rewards would serve as an incentive to exploit these transactions as only green miners would be eligible to receive them.

The solution is based on identifying miners that use low-emission energy sources. After identification, their public keys, called “green keys,” would be used to reward miners with Bitcoin in a trust-agnostic method through a “1-of-n multi-signature script.” As a result, the payment address would allow miners with green keys to claim the rewards.

Bitcoin mining has been controversial. While many legacy companies, such as PayPal and others, have targeted the grid due to its supposedly intense electricity consumption and carbon emissions, other research has pointed to the growing use of renewable energy and the low carbon emissions produced by the nascent industry.
