This Week’s Top Bitcoin News

Bitcoin experiences a rough start in May, as its trajectory apparently has peaked after a bullish market.

Crypto analyst Plan B, who is known for having created the Stock-to-Flow (S2F) model, predicted via X (formerly Twitter) that the average price of Bitcoin could reach $500 thousand at the end of the current bullish cycle. He added that the next 2028-2032 cycle will be much more extreme, suggesting a price tag of $4 million.

Plan B’s May 7 post reads as follows:

“Average bitcoin price 2020-2024 halving cycle was $34k. A bit below 2019 S2F prediction of $55k, but still in normal range and not bad given BTC<$4k when prediction was made. Refit of S2F with new data (below) shows similar parameters & results: $0.5m 2024-2028 and $4m 2028-2032.”

It should be noted that PlanB’s prediction model, as it itself recognizes, is not without flaws. In this regard, PlanB explains that the line towards $500 thousand will not be straight, with intermediate falls to levels between $100 and $200.

New US Government Cryptocurrency Wallet Found

Arkham, an on-chain analysis firm, recently detected a new crypto wallet belonging to the US government, containing nearly 4,000 BTC with an approximate amount of $251 million.

Last January, Arkham was able to identify the address where the BTC seized from Banmeet Singh, a drug trafficker, was located.

According to available data, the US government is believed to currently hold 216,811 BTC, estimated to be worth close to $13.83 billion. Based on this data, the United States thus becomes one of the main whales in the world of cryptocurrencies, above MicroStrategy, which owns 214,278 units of the pioneering digital currency.

Financial Firm Expects Hong Kong Bitcoin ETF Sector to Reach $1 Billion in AUM

Financial firm CF Benchmarks’ CEO Sui Chung claims that Hong Kong Bitcoin ETFs will reach $1 billion in assets under management (AUM) before the end of 2024.

In the CEO’s opinion, Hong Kong spot Bitcoin EFTs will need time to prove how convenient they are. CF Benchmarks, in Chung’s opinion, represents almost half of the cryptocurrency benchmarking market. Additionally, the company is currently working with new Bitcoin ETFs in the region.

The firm operates in several jurisdictions, and provides index or benchmark data services. Additionally, it offers projections to several US ETFs, an activity it also carries out in Hong Kong.

Sui Chung highlighted the importance of having trust in issuers and having an expanding ETF market. With the entry of Bitcoin ETFs in different countries, investors may feel less biased.

South Korea and Israel are soon expected to be the next spot markets for Bitcoin, demonstrating the continued growth of this form of investment.

Binance Denies Allegations of Fake Operations by DWF, and other News

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, internal investigators at Binance detected fake transactions worth $300 million.

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published a report about fake transactions worth $300 million, allegedly carried out by DWF Labs in 2023. The information was disclosed by a former Binance employee, who claimed that DWF Labs manipulated prices of more than five cryptocurrencies, including Yield Guild Game (YGG).

Binance denies any misconduct, assuring that it has a solid market surveillance system, which makes it impossible to manipulate market prices. The company also emphasized its commitment to expelling traders who appear to be committing such crime, and as proof of this, nearly 355,000 users have been expelled in the last three years for violating the terms of use by doing transactions above $2,5 billion.

According to PANews, the European Securities and Markets Authority, known as ESMA, has started to contact industry professionals and experts by means of a survey, whose purpose is to determine if cryptocurrencies should be included in investment products.

More specifically, ESMA is said to aim at expanding the reach of what is known as Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities, a marked with a size up to 12 trillion euros. If successful, cryptocurrencies could take another step towards their integration into Europe. Sean Tuffy, an expert in financial regulation, stressed that this event could “change the rules of the game.”

Core Scientific Records Earnings After Bankruptcy Recovery

Core Scientific is a Texas-based Bitcoin mining company that recently recovered from bankruptcy experienced last year. In the first quarter of 2024, the company registered positive results with a revenue of $150 million in digital asset mining, which represents a 46% increase in its gross margin.

This is part of the overall recovery evident in the cryptocurrency market, and reflects how Core Scientific’s has succeeded in its financial strategy after the bankruptcy event.

In Q1 2023, Core Scientific had lost $400,000, while in the same period this year it managed to gain $270 million. Such improvement could be attributed to a gain of $143.8 million, after the company was able to get rid of obligations derived from its financial restructuring process.

ETH, XRP, ADA, SHIB and DOT Price Analysis as of May 10

Bulls and bears are fighting to control the price of Bitcoin, due to its constant oscillation.

Although the analysis of cryptocurrencies summarized below does not include Bitcoin, mentioning the main cryptocurrency is inevitable. There is a huge battle going on right now between bulls and bears, as after receiving almost $600 million in inflows into Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds between May 4 and May 6, everything changed on May 7, when there was an exit of $15.7 million, according to data provided by Farside Investors.

With this changing landscape, one wonders to what extent buyers will be able to protect support levels in cryptocurrencies, and thus avoid a collapse.

Ethereum (ETH) Analysis

ETH remains above $3,000, closing this week with a 2% price increase. This increase has generated optimism, since it can be inferred that the correction is coming to an end. So far, buyers have acted strongly whenever the price collapses below $3,000.

Current resistance sits at $3,400, and was last tested in late April, when sellers rejected a breakout attempt. So if buyers insist on keeping the price above key support, there will likely be another breakout attempt.

It seems that ETH could consolidate in such a range until the market makes a decisive move. The bias appears neutral at the moment, and could turn bullish when the cryptocurrency surpasses $3,400.

Ripple (XRP) Analysis

XRP experienced a week of flat price action, identical to the previous week. Current resistance is at $0.54, and buyers have been unable to break through it, despite their most recent attempts.

In the near future, the price of XRP is expected to remain below the key resistance of $0.54. If sales increase, XRP could have good support of %0.50.

Cardano (ADA) Analysis

ADA had a rough start this month, after which it has found support at $0.45, thus attempting to rise again. This week closed with a price increase of 3%.

If the bulls can keep the price above $0.45, ADA has a chance of recovering some of the losses suffered in April, when it fell more than 35% in a few days.

In the near future, indicators apparently suggest signs of the return of buyers. For this to happen, the price must reach a new local maximum, exceeding $0.50.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) Analysis

Like ADA, SHIB closed this week with a 3% increase in its price. The current resistance sits at $0.000025, which is the most significant challenge for the bulls right now. Support is located at $0.000022, holding up quite well so far.

SHIB must reach a higher high if it wants to confirm a reversal. It is important to note that the price has recorded increasingly lower lows and highs in the last two months.

In the near future, SHIB could resume its uptrend and end the correction that began in March, as long as buyers overcome the key resistance.

Polkadot (DOT) Analysis

DOT has held above $6 and is apparently able to break the current resistance at $7.6. Its price in relation to the previous week remains unchanged.

If DOT manages to rise further, its consolidation could be a reality. The trend remains neutral, although momentum indicators begin to curve upward. This indicator suggests that DOT could rally in the short term.

In the near future, DOT appears on track for its next major move, given its gradual consolidation above key support.

It is timely, then, to observe how leaders act to know where the market is heading. DOT is likely to loom large.

OKX and Binance Announce Listing of Notcoin (NOT).

The price of TON soars by 11% after the publication of Notcoin.

OKX and Binance have just announced the listing of Notcoin (NOT) on their respective platforms. The crypto community has reacted enthusiastically following such announcements.

Will Bitcoin Boost the TON Blockchain Ecosystem?

According to the announcement, OKX will make use of its platform for new projects, and thus allow TON holders to lock their cryptocurrencies for NOT tokens. OKX has set a staking limit of 4,000 TON per participant. The staking process is expected to begin on May 13, 2024 at 06:00 UTC.

On the other hand, Binance Launchpool introduced NOT as its 54th project. Through this mechanism, users have the ability to farm NOT through locking BNB and First Digital USD. Exploitation will also begin on May 14, 2024 at 00:00 UTC.

Notcoin (NOT) is a community token that is within the TON blockchain. It gained popularity due to a tap-to-learn game that went viral on Telegram, with 35 million participants. The game has also managed to captivate users, making them fully immersed in Web3 technologies.

Currently, NOT is focusing on building an ecosystem, including a video game platform as well as Web3 project exploration tools. Despite these intentions, the official release date has not yet been announced.

Notwithstanding the aforementioned, its listings on CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap seem to indicate an imminent launch.

All this development has been positive for TON, whose price rose by 11.32% in the last 24 hours, trading at $6.57.

Institutional Investors Make Big Bet

The TON blockchain, in addition to announcing the launch of Notcoin, has made headlines due to its streak of partnerships, including the significant investment made by Pantera Capital.

Although the amount of money invested has not yet been revealed, Pantera Capital noted that TON is “its largest investment to date.”

Dan Morehead, CEO of Pantera Capital, blogged about his thoughts on the blockchain’s potential for transformation, based in part on his interaction with Telegram founder Pavel Durov.

Morehead ratified Durov’s commitment to principles such as freedom and openness, fundamental to the Telegram platform, and therefore also to the TON blockchain:

“We are proud and honored to partner with people with such strong beliefs. Pantera recently made the largest investment in its history with TON.”

On the other hand, Ryan Barney, partner at Pantera Capital, stated in detail the reasons for his decision to invest in TON.

“Telegram is a community that integrates blockchain technology. That has to be easier. “They have begun to deploy a blockchain wallet to their 930 million users,” Barney highlighted.

There has been increased interest from the cryptocurrency and Web3 sectors in gaming-related tokens. As an example, SAGA, which has been listed by Binance, is a native token of the Layer 1 gaming blockchain. SAGA has revealed that more than $13 billion in BNB and FDUSD were locked in the next 24 years. upon its launch via Binance Launchpool.

The Web2 gaming niche continues to take shape due to venture capital, as massive investments in video game projects by companies such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) highlight the industry’s renewed interest.

Solana Traders Invest $9 Million to Prevent “Sandwich Attacks”

Sandwich attacks take advantage of delays in Solana transactions.

In an attempt to combat disruptive trading practices, cryptocurrency traders have collectively invested more than $9.5 million in recent weeks to safeguard Solana transactions against so-called “sandwich attacks.”

This phenomenon, common in blockchain ecosystems, involves the presence of bots that exploit transaction latency, placing their own orders before and after a target transaction, and thus manipulating market prices.

“Sandwich Attacks”: How Do They Work?

A “sandwich attack” consists of “sandwiching” a user’s transactions between two attacker transactions. Two attacker orders are before and after the user’s order (hence the name sandwich), generating a loss for the user and a gain for the attacker. Sandwich attacks typically take place on decentralized exchanges (DEX) and result in price manipulation.

According to Forbes: “the MEV bot detects another person’s intention to buy a coin and prepares to benefit from the small price appreciation that the other person’s bid is likely to cause.” Forbes further explains the following:

“The bot jumps the line to buy the coin for a fraction less, leading the trade. After the purchase is made by the mark in the middle, the bot completes the sandwich by automatically selling the token at a profit.”

Cryptocurrency Traders Want to Stop Solana’s “Sandwich Attacks”

Jito, a leading security provider within the Solana network, has been at the forefront of implementing protective measures. The company provides a service in which users pay a nominal amount to have their transactions grouped and processed privately.

Such approach effectively protects transactions from predatory bots that seek profits through “sandwich attacks.” Addressing these attacks has become a pressing need, given the growing impact of attacks on retail traders and the Solana community in general.

Sandwich attacks are a nuisance and a significant threat to the financial integrity of blockchain transactions. By manipulating transaction orders, attackers inflate token prices momentarily, profiting from sales after the transaction is executed.

Questions have also been raised about the role of Solana validators. Some community members accuse them of using their delegated staking to engage in sandwich attacks, exacerbating the problem. This has sparked calls for greater transparency and accountability from Solana developers.

“Solana validators who are using delegation stake to literally rob retail via sandwich attacks,” said the CEO of Helius via X.

Solana has seen a 599.92% price surge in 2023, largely caused by the meme coin frenzy. The SOL price, though, has suffered a recent drop of 3.52%, despite making a 20.53% gain last week, highlighting the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency market.

Grayscale Leaves Ethereum Futures ETF Project

Grayscale did not explain its reasons in the takedown notice.

On May 7, Grayscale withdrew its application for an Ethereum futures ETF before the US SEC. The main crypto asset manager did not explain the reasons for its decision in the takedown notice.

Since November 2023, the application had faced several delays from the federal regulator, which argued it needed more time for analysis.

According to Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart, Grayscale’s withdrawal appears to be an interesting strategy by the company. He suggested that Grayscale was seeking to replicate the conditions that favored it in a previous court case against the SEC, from which it emerged victorious last August.

“UPDATE This is interesting. @Grayscale just withdrew their 19b-4 filing for an #Ethereum futures ETF. This was essentially a Trojan horse filing in my view, in order to create the same circumstances that allowed Grayscale to win the $GBTC lawsuit (approve futures deny spot),” Seyffart posted on X on May 7.

Grayscale had been waiting nine months for a verdict from the SEC, after it filed the request in August last year. On that occasion, the companies VanEck, Bitwise, Roundhill, ProShares, Valkyrie, Kelly and VolShares also requested authorization.

While with Grayscale the process was delayed several times, the ETFs of the other companies mentioned were approved in October 2023,

Grayscale’s Decision Further Details

Seyffart believes the company intended to spark another legal showdown with the SEC by seeking similar approval for Ethereum ETFs. However, he noted that the withdrawal of the order may indicate a different approach than Grayscale this time.

Seyffart expressed his bewilderment at Grayscale’s decision, wondering if this could cause the SEC to draft an approval or denial for an ETH futures ETF. Another option he puts on the table is that perhaps the SEC spoke to Grayscale about this and everything that was said convinced Grayscale to walk away. Everything said by Seyffart, although, as he himself says, is an assumption.

The comments were joined by Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett, who mentioned that one of the factors to take into account is that Grayscale did not present the S-1 form, one of those required for final approval, in its application.

“The SEC may have wanted to see if a finished futures application would come before considering its spot application,” she said. This considering that investor demand for existing ether futures ETFs “has been relatively weak” since their launch last year, she added.

Seyffart did not rule out the possibility of Grayscale resubmitting a modified version of the order. He stressed that remaking the order would be less burdensome for the SEC, but would preclude any immediate legal action by Grayscale or other interested parties.

The decision to withdraw the application also coincides with growing uncertainty over the SEC’s potential clearance of Ethereum spot ETFs. While Bitcoin spot ETFs were approved in January, the approval odds for Ethereum ETFs have been declining, especially after reports that the SEC classified Ethereum as a regulated security last year.

Another ETF specialist, Nate Geraci, believes that Grayscale should stick with its proposal, as it would have given it reason to “file a lawsuit simply based on the denial of this futures-based ETF.”

Getting an SEC ruling on the futures ETF “could have been instrumental in any lawsuit filed by Grayscale,” if the ether spot ETF was rejected, Geraci says.
