South Korea Would Implement a Voting System Using Blockchain Technology

The objective is to contribute with the voter’s authentication and the storage of the results

The transparency and ease with which blockchain technology works, in addition to its characteristic invulnerability, make the South Korean Government consider using blockchain technology in electronic voting systems.

The Ministry of Science and Technology of Information and Communications and the National Electoral Commission of that country are the organizations that plan to test the blockchain technology in their online voting system.

The trial period is scheduled for December and will be conducted by the Korean Internet and Security Agency (KISA) together with the Blockchain Society of the National University of Seoul.

An article points out that blockchain technology will be implemented in voter authentication and the saving of results. “Voting will be conducted through laptops and personal computers. The data will be stored in a distributed network and all voters will be able to see the results of the voting as they move forward”, he says.

After the test, the National Electoral Commission will make a decision on the use of the online voting system, taking into account that artificial intelligence (AI), big data and Internet of Things (IoT) technology will also be added to update the voting systems.

As in other countries

In the midterm elections in the US State of West Virginia, a similar system of mobile voting based on blockchain technology was programmed to be used, according to information portals reported on September 27th.

After the elections held in early November, the State Secretary said that 144 military personnel posted abroad from 24 counties were able to cast their votes on a mobile platform based on a blockchain. Its name is Voatz.

This year, several countries around the world have announced the consideration of blockchain-based voting systems, such as Ukraine, Catalonia, and the Japanese city of Tsukuba. In June, the Swiss city of Zug, commonly known as “Crypto Valley”, held a municipal test vote driven by blockchain.

The voting process will be done through laptops and personal computers, while the data provided will be stored in a distributed network so that all voters can see the results of the process as this progress.

The tests will begin next month for a survey activity conducted by the Blockchain Society of the National University of Seoul and the Korea Internet and Security Agency, the agency responsible for the regulation and content of the Internet in that country.

According to the performance during the tests, the National Elections Commission will be in charge of deciding if the system is really applicable for the online votes after the evaluations. NEC has also commented that artificial intelligence, big data and, IoT technology will be included later to optimize voting systems in Korea.

Already in other opportunities, NEC launched a system known as K-vote, which also corresponded to an online voting process for the year 2013. It had been used by 5.64 million people, but even today there is much distrust regarding this as a result of the problems of piracy and fraud.

Google’s “Bitcoin” Searches are at their Highest Volume since April

Value-wise, Bitcoin may be in one of its worst historical decline phases. It is no secret that since January, and especially since that black Wednesday, November 14th in which its fortunes started to change for the worse, its price has been going down. However, the leading cryptocurrency by market cap is still making headlines and being the center of attention, according to the planet’s biggest online company.

Yes, Google’s trend explorer does not lie, and it shows that weekly searches containing the keyword “Bitcoin” are reaching levels that it has not seen since the month of April. Unfortunately, the precise number of queries with the most prominent digital asset in them has not been published.

Data from Google reveals that just counting the last three days, people have been entering the keyword 17 percent of the time of the all-time weekly number, achieved at the climax of the BTC price surge between December 17th, 2017, and December 23rd, 2017.

The Days of Glory

In those days, Bitcoin was experiencing a formidable upswing in value that culminated in nearly $20,000 for every BTC in the middle of January. From that point on, the asset started to collapse and it stabilized in the $6,400-$6,500 range for weeks up until November 14’s debacle.

Google’s trend data tools also show the geographical area that logged the most searches with the Bitcoin keyword. According to the online giant, the biggest number of searches came from two African countries, Nigeria and South Africa, while Europe’s Austria was also among the leaders for the past week. If you thought that the United States of America would lead the ranking or be in the top five; you would be surprised to hear that it checked in the number 19 spot.

One conclusion can be made about the piece of news: Bitcoin experiences a high number of searches in the world’s leading search engine when it is trending up in a hurry or collapsing to almost unknown levels. Right now, BTC is in the midst of its worst slump in more than a year. Google data also points out that searches for Bitcoin more than doubled on November 24th, which was the day it fell below the $4,000 threshold.

Is there a Correlation between Google Searches and BTC Price?

Investors and people within the industry speculate that there is a direct correlation between Bitcoin’s price and Google search performance. According to a Willy Woo 2017 study, Google search trends and patterns can be used as factors to determine the best and worst times to acquire BTC, as well as speculative “bubbles,” according to Coindesk.

Another way to say that times that do not produce high searches for the bitcoin keyword can be identified as good buying opportunities, whereas periods of high search volume may mean that the crypto is in a “bubble” and about to be deflated.

At the time of this writing, BTC had gained 5.66 percent of its value in the last 24 hours, trading hands at $4,146.78 according to Coin Market Cap.

Nasdaq’s Bitcoin Futures Could Be Ready to Launch by 2019’s First Quarter

Nasdaq, one of the most influential stock exchanges in the whole planet, has stated its intentions of launching Bitcoin futures, saying that it could start doing it as soon as the first quarter of next year. The information was provided by Bloomberg, this Tuesday.

Bloomberg quoted two people familiar with the situation as its sources. They say that momentum “was building towards” a possible launch in the first part of 2019, a moment in which the price of Bitcoin will be totally uncertain.

At the moment of writing this article, the price for each BTC was $3,847.68, which would be a 2.94 percent improvement over what it showed in the last 24 hours. However, 2018 has been rough for BTC and all altcoins.

The most prominent and widely used cryptocurrency reached $19,000 at one point in January, but it dropped all year to the $6,400-$6,500 range, in which it somewhat stabilized until November 14th. Starting from that day, it has collapsed yet again to reach the levels it shows today, and as experts still debate whether this is rock bottom or there is more room to go down, a setting for futures appears. BTC’s, recent performance marks the “tail end of a testing year for existing Bitcoin future products,” according to Cointelegraph.

“Nasdaq has been working to satisfy the concerns of the U.S.’s main swaps regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission [CFTC], before launching the contracts,” the two unnamed sources told Bloomberg.

A Plan in the Making

Nasdaq has been toying with the idea of Bitcoin futures for over a year. They first stated that they would do it by the middle of this year, after CBOE and CME Group scheduled the launch in the month of November 2017.

However, regulatory issues had forced executives to delay the date. Now, some critical competitors jumped ahead of Nasdaq and have offered futures before the US-based stock exchange. Among them are the Intercontinental Exchange’s Bakkt, which is scheduled to launch physical Bitcoin futures on January 24th.

Nasdaq is clearly not afraid of Bitcoin’s current vulnerability and volatility, as is evident in the stock’s enthusiasm. In fact, the exchange is, according to Bloomberg’s sources, “betting on sustained interest” in the future.

What exactly are Bitcoin Futures?

A “future” is an agreement to acquire or sell a specific good or asset on a previously specified future date at a previously agreed upon price, no matter what the market shows at the moment of making the transaction. It is known as a risk management tool rather than a profit maximization approach.

When we talk about Bitcoin futures, the agreement will allow speculators to place a bet on what they think the price is going to be in the future. People can; therefore, speculate on the value of the asset without actually having to own BTC.

Bitcoin futures can be traded on regulated exchanges, a positive setting for those worried about the lack of regulation of the industry. Also, these kinds of deals let investors speculate on BTCs price on locations in which trading Bitcoin is prohibited.

Criminals Falsify Trezor Devices to Steal Cryptocurrencies

The similarity in the core of equipment makes it difficult to distinguish them, but the originals have a hologram that characterizes them

Trezor, the manufacturer of some hardware portfolios for the storage of cryptocurrencies, published a statement in which it warns its clients about the production of false devices that are marketed under the name of the company and used to steal cryptocurrencies.

The modus operandi is to distribute an individual copy of Trezor One, using it as a tool to steal other people’s money and, in this way, damage the name of the company. In its statement, Trezor reported that they had already “become accustomed” to the existence of Trezor clones, created by legitimate companies, but marketed under a different name.

But the actual problem is the devices which have the purpose of stealing cryptoactives and not working in order to store the client’s patrimony. The similarity between the original products and their replicas is at its core. This is what makes it difficult to distinguish them. Criminals use products that were designed to be visually very similar, ensuring that there were no noticeable differences unless something in particular: the clone devices has security breaches through which the assets are illegally stolen.

In a post published on its official blog, Trezor explains: “These copies of Trezor One device represent a serious threat to customers, and also compromise the good name and reputation of our company”.

These fakes represent a threat to the security of cryptocurrency funds and other digital assets of users. “You would not trust your money to someone who had already cheated you, by selling you a different product than what you thought you were buying. Therefore, we recommend not using this device and reporting it to us, which would help us combat these scams and provide a legitimate device”, adds the company.

One of the indicators that has helped to identify these devices is that they tend to be commercialized with quite remarkable discounts, so the company invites to be very attentive to these misleading offers since “they cannot guarantee the proper functioning of the devices marketed under their name (the cloned ones), since these are produced by people outside the company”.

Another way to distinguish them to the originals ones is with the hologram that comes in the seal of the box. The holographic stamp that protects the packaging of the device, since the one used by cloning is much less detailed. To achieve this, the company uploaded a video through its official accounts so that customers can compare the corresponding stamps.

On the company’s website, they warn that these devices “are not suitable for the storage of cryptocurrencies”, inviting the affected people to inform the theft through the channels enabled to help Trezor to structure an action plan to combat this new modality of scams.

An answer to the scam

The directors claim to be exploring the legal steps and mechanisms that can be used to address this problem, seeking that the attackers continue to produce and market these devices.

The company claims that the customers who bought their Trezor through the official store have nothing to worry about, as well as those people who bought them through authorized stores during the years 2016-2017. The invitation is for all those people who decide to take advantage of deceptive offers that have been popularized through platforms such as Taobao, AliExpress, eBay or Amazon, which are published by unknown resellers.

The hardware portfolio provider warns customers to avoid online markets when they buy their wallet and only buy from authorized resellers and at the official Amazon store.

Stablecoin Tether Could Be Exchanged for Dollars and Euros

The objective is to grant greater legitimacy to the operations conducted with this cryptocurrency. It will apply only to people who make exchange orders for a minimum of USD $ 100,000

Operators of the controversial stablecoin Tether announced the launch of a new platform in which verified customers can exchange their USDT balances for legal tender money in two options: US dollars or euros.

The company announced the direct exchange of Tether to fiat currencies together with an important redesign of its platform for new client’s verification. The update allows users to exchange their tokens on the Tether.to platform with a ratio of USDT to fiat of 1:1 (one for one).

All Tether deposits and withdrawals have a zero cost, while fiat transfers are subject to commissions. Tether customers will be limited to an exchange of US dollars per week. The minimum Tether issuance and exchange requirements are $ 100,000 and USD $ 100,000, respectively.

The Bitfinex team made the announcement through a message on its Twitter account, which says: “From today onwards, Bitfinex customers will be able to trade Tether-fiat directly on our platform through the addition of USDT / USD and EURT / EUR Tether trading pairs”.

The operating company reported that in principle it was decided to modify the model originally proposed for the operation of the digital currency, due to the popularity and volume of operations registered for the stablecoin.

In the beginning, Bitfinex support was requested so that users could exchange their USDT balances for US dollars. This generated a wave of complaints from people who claimed that the digital currency was used to “manipulate” the prices of different cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

A possibility of using wallets

From now on, the users’ purses will be compatible with USDT and EURT, in addition to the euro and the US dollar fiduciary balances, thanks to an alliance with Deltec Bank, a banking entity based in the Bahamas.

The operating company ensures that it will be possible to resume the idea of managing a wallet in which people can store USDT and exchange them directly for legal tender without relying on a third party. This means that, from the date, it will be possible to exchange Tether for USD, incorporating the possibility of acquiring USDT balances for other digital currencies.

About the new measure on which users interested in exchanging their Tether for dollars must have at least 100,000 USDT. Digital currency operators assured that these actions are specially designed “for a sector of professional investors that make use of the digital currency”.

Although Tether’s reputation has been strongly affected by the lack of certified accounting reports and the difficulties that Bitfinex has faced in liquidating its clients, the digital currency still holds its position among the most used in the market.

Another factor was the fall in the prices of the stablecoin, which even registered prices below USD $ 0.90. Despite these facts, last June Stuart Hoegner, an international cryptocurrency and gaming lawyer, affirmed Tether had “enough US dollars” to support each token.

Coinbase Wallet Adds Ethereum Classic to its Catalog

Despite being down today and having been unable to escape the market bloodbath that has been taking place since November 14th, the Ethereum Classic (ETC) cryptocurrency received good news on Tuesday, November 27th.

As it turns out, the Coinbase Wallet, which is a product of the influential American cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, will start supporting Ethereum Classic “in a matter of days,” according to a blog post published this Tuesday.

The aforementioned blog post clearly states that the Coinbase Wallet app will be updated within the next “few days” in order to incorporate Ethereum Classic. Users and investors will be able to view, send, and receive ETC with no restrictions once the update is complete and ready to use.

“Your Wallet app should update in the next few days, after which you can view, send, and receive ETC on your Wallet,” the platform wrote in its blog post.

People that already own a Coinbase Wallet will have the same ETH addresses as their ETC ones, so there will be no confusion. Hence, Ethereum Classic joins other 100,000 ERC20 tokens in the Coinbase Wallet’s offerings.

Three Months Later

The Coinbase Wallet first made its plan public about supporting Ethereum Cash in June. The news, at the time, cause ETC’s price to go through the roof. The listing went live three months ago, in August, and as a result, ETC was incorporated into the Coinbase Index Fund, according to Cointelegraph.

Bittrex, one of the most famous and widely used cryptocurrency exchanges with a wallet, added a USD-ETC trading pair in August. Robinhood, another platform to trade assets, also announced support for ETC in the same month.

A Little Bit more about Coinbase

Coinbase, with headquarters in the state of California (United States of America,) is a cryptocurrency exchange. It pairs, or “broker” exchanges of a host of digital assets, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, and Litecoin with fiat currency in more than 30 nations around the world. It also offers Bitcoin transactions and storage in 190 countries.

Its two most prominent products are a GDAX (Global Digital Asset Exchange) for trading assets and a user-facing retail broker of Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, Ethereum Classic and Litecoin for fiat currency.

A Little Bit more about Ethereum Classic

Ethereum Classic is a cryptocurrency, the number 17 according to market cap ranking published daily by the specialized site Coin Market Cap. It was the result of a 2016 hard fork in the Ethereum blockchain, citing differences in the way to respond to the DAO hack of the blockchain as the primary reason for the split.

At the moment of this writing, Ethereum Classic (ETC) was changing hands at $4.39, which is an increment of 0.44 percent in the last 24 hours. Its total market cap is $467,270,943.00 and the trading volume in the last 24 hours amounts to $149,464,022. There are 106,345,199 total ETC in circulation.

As it happened with all cryptocurrencies in the top 20, its decline started in January, a moment in which it comfortably surpassed $40.
