New McAfee Report States that Crypto-Mining Malware Attacks Wnet Up 29% in the First Quarter

As more business ventures and services are shifting the way they manage their business to prioritize the digital platform, the risk of cybercrimes has, unsurprisingly, gone up in recent years, and the numbers back up that premise.

One of the planet’s most famous online security firms, McAfee, released its August-2019-Threats Report this week, and one of the primary conclusions that researchers reached is that crypto-jacking has significantly increased in frequency and impact.

A Sizable Increase

The report states that crypto mining malware campaigns experienced an increase of 29% from the 2018 last quarter to the first one of 2019. According to the cybersecurity firm, the attackers did not discriminate between brands, as Apple MacOS and Microsoft Windows both suffered a rise in targeted attacks.

PowerShell, which is an interactive command line and automation engine that leaves administrative duties to the computer, was the primary avenue used by cybercriminals to target Windows devices. Implementing PowerShell means that any vulnerabilities in servers were exploited with the intention of mining the Monero cryptocurrency.

That attack, according to McAfee, had capabilities similar to those of worms, which let it jump between servers with relative ease.

Meanwhile, a malware program named CookieMiner was mostly implemented to perform this operation on MacOS devices. Cybercriminals were able to steal private account data that was on users’ computers. As a result, customers with personal accounts in exchanges and platforms such as Coinbase, Binance, Poloniex, Bitstamp, BitTrex, or MyEtherWallet suffered from data theft.

This week, famous news platform BBC reported a crypto-jacking virus that targeted Monero. The new threat had managed to hack a whopping 850,000 servers in total, the majority of them located in the Latin American region. French authorities were able to deactivate the primary server and migrate the threat to unused parts of the web universe.

New Ransomware Techniques Discovered

According to the report, ransomware attacks grew by 118%, and new ransomware families were detected. Actors and perpetrators also used innovative techniques.

“The 118% increase in ransomware attacks included the discovery of new ransomware families utilizing new, innovative techniques to target and infect enterprises. McAfee researchers observed cybercriminals are still using spear-phishing tactics, but an increasing number of attacks are gaining access to a company that has open and exposed remote access points, such as RDP and virtual network computing (VNC). RDP credentials can be brute-forced, obtained from password leaks, or simply bought in underground markets,” the report read.

“Where past ransomware criminals would set up a command and control environment for the ransomware and decryption keys, most criminals now approach victims with ransom notes that include an anonymous email service address, allowing bad actors to remain better hidden.”

In January, the McAfee Advanced Threat Research team was the first to discover a new ransomware family, Anatova, “designed to cipher all files before requesting payment from the victim. Anatova’s architecture is unusual in that it is modular, which could facilitate future development of ransomware.”

Blockchain: an Opportunity to Preserve or Exploit Privacy

The private sector has been gradually becoming hollow over time, as an entity growing within the public world. The first great historical leap of private space does not occur until western bourgeoisie becomes the protagonist.

In the past there were certainly moments of what is known as privacy, but it was necessary to wait until the development of the Enlightenment for its institutionalization. It should be remembered that it took long before the arrival of private silent reading, a behavior associated with the establishment of home as an example of the institution of privacy.

Privacy is an institution in which many basic rights and fundamental freedoms of our liberal democracies are rooted. The other great historical leap will come from the progressive extension of the concept of home, especially as a single-family home, to society as a whole. To compare, it is a good idea to return to large families of farmers, day laborers and workers living in overcrowded conditions.

Contamination of Privacy

It is important to highlight a division in which most current western citizens have grown, based on a contrast between communications. In other words, what was communicated in public could be different, in both content and form, to what was communicated in private, and vice versa.

Since they seem to be two different communicative spheres, people felt suspicious with the successive technological innovations in the communicative field. This kind of contamination of privacy by the public and of the public by privacy aroused the worst fears.

It occurred with the radio, as a captor of private wills for partisan-privatized public interests. This was expanded by television, but what might be happening today is a kind of privatization of the public-political space. That is, contents of a public nature are approached as if they were private, using the language of privacy.

Telephone Booths

Booths signified the blurred boundaries between public and private regarding telephone communication. It was a private space amid the hectic public space of the street. Despite not being heard, it could be seen through the transparency of its glass walls. Obviously, privacy was being exercised, limiting its exercise in terms of time with lines made at the door of the booth, by people awaiting their respective turns.

Initially, people had the feeling that there was an obsession to control them. On the part of the State and its armed hand in these matters, they were initially state-own telephone companies. Once Internet joins the telephone, it is already difficult to distinguish one element from the other. Other actors that appropriate the privacy built through our conversations and movements on the Net begin to enter.

Blockchain and the Right to Privacy

Blockchain allows the secrecy of messages and meanings to be maintained by those who issue them. Companies have found in blockchain not only the possibility of a more transparent relationship between entities and users, since everything is written in the Great Ledger.

Privacy is something that until now was a commodity from which a few obtained fruit, without it being known that users were exploited in their extraction. Now, users will be able to decide if they participate in that exploitation, or prefer to keep it as a right. In this second part, Blockchain has a lot to say.

Two Cryptocurrency Projects Received Bank Licenses in Switzerland

Both projects received bank licenses to operate and boost blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.

For the first time in Switzerland, two projects seek to conduct approaches and research on banking activities with cryptocurrencies. Two projects were approved by the banking regulatory systems. It is known that these projects will have a large amount of money for their realization, as well as the support of very important bankers.

In this way, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the granting of licenses for the companies Sygnum and SEBA Crypto. This information was confirmed by both banking companies last Monday, August 26th. The news did not turn out to be a surprise since last month, a report would have appeared indicating that FINMA would be evaluating the approval of licenses at the same time for both projects focused on cryptocurrencies.

The news marks an important advance of the blockchain industry, thus venturing into the traditional financial system. Both companies, SEBA Crypto and Sygnum, can develop their projects freely. Both companies aspire to be among the first banking institutions dedicated to cryptocurrencies in the world.

Both projects have had broad support from other banking institutions. It is known that the SEBA Crypto group has made an important alliance with a private bank, represented by Julius Baer that also has its headquarters in Zurich. On the other hand, Sygnum, the company that is located in Zurich, has partnered with Peter Wuffli, who is former CEO of UBS and who was also, at some point, financial advisor to Philipp Hildebrand, the renowned Swiss banker.

According to statements that correspond to the approval of these licenses, the idea that both projects were granted at the same time to both companies by FINMA, responds to the purpose of avoiding generating bad competition between the companies. In the same vein, the idea is also to avoid giving more advantage to one than to the other since this can also suppose, among the possible clients, some type of distrust or better impression on the other.

This support to the companies by the FINMA is also due to the declarations of the cryptocurrency exchange house Bitcoin Suisse, which has plans to expand its business to Switzerland, so this company would also seek to manage a bank license in the Alpine country.

Laws that Should Comply Cryptocurrency Banks in Switzerland

Last Thursday, August 22nd, FINMA approved a series of amendments to the laws that go against money laundering, which are linked to the ordinances approved by a working group that was formed during the G7 meeting, called FATF. Therefore, this reform must be respected by any banking institution, including the new financial companies SEBA Crypto and Sygnum.

The reform says that only cryptocurrency and token transactions, like happens with transfers too, will be allowed to users who have their accounts duly registered and verified by the competent bodies, as well as by the cryptocurrency financial companies.

FINMA concluded its statement explaining that, unlike the FATF, it will not allow outflow for cryptocurrency purses that are not regulated.

Rwanda Studies Blockchain Technology in order to Launch its Own Cryptocurrency

With the aim to launch its own cryptocurrency in the future, the Central Bank of Rwanda is studying the crypto-technology.

Governments in the world are becoming increasingly aware of the impact that blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are generating on the world. In this way, they have concentrated efforts to form work groups that help research and innovate with this new tool that is changing many processes in global finance, and in many other sectors of the economy.

Other countries had remained aloof from this technology due to ignorance or distrust. However, after Facebook’s announcement about the launch of its cryptocurrency, Libra, many nations have been forced to make changes to their policies and to establish groups of experts in the area to help them understand blockchain and digital currencies. This, in order to establish a legal framework that regulates its use in the country so cryptocurrencies would be established as an asset that can also be used by the government.

In the middle of the changes are the nations that have already had a direct approach to cryptocurrencies and allow their use in the country, or even have launched their own official cryptocurrency. This is the case of Japan with its set of laws that regulate the use of cryptocurrencies or Venezuela with its Petro, this is, the country’s official cryptocurrency. But, despite the advantages that cryptocurrencies may represent, they can often lose control of certain monetary policies.

For this reason, according to information from local media, Rwanda could launch its own cryptocurrency in the future. The cryptoactive would be protected by the country’s Central Bank.

Due to official reports from The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), and the monetary authority of Singapore, The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) would be using its data to base its research on the possible uses and potentials of cryptocurrencies and apply them to the economy of the African country.

About the issues that could present some inconvenience within Rwanda’s economy, Masozera Uwase, who is Director of Economic Stability at BNR, explained that the exchange of physical money to digital money could be a real challenge in Rwanda. “There is still concern about how exactly you convert all physical money into digital money, how you distribute it, and how fast you can process those transactions”.

The Rwandan financial authorities have conducted large information campaigns about the possible risks that citizens might face when using cryptocurrencies. They say citizens could be immersed in fraudulent negotiations without knowledge or suffer online scams. For this reason, it is not yet expected that, in the short term, a Rwandan digital currency can be launched.

Regarding these risks, Uwase argued that “there are challenges in this. If technology fails, how do you face the challenges this brings? We will enter the moment we feel ready”.

Although they are not yet prepared for trust at all in the crypto-technology, the interest of poor governments such as Rwanda to solve their country’s financial problems using blockchain technology is a great recognition of the digital currency industry.

Blockchain Business in Colombia

Currently, the blockchain business takes relevance all over the world. However, in Colombia it barely reached US $4.8 million last year.

When talking about Blockchain, the subject of Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies used for financial transactions is also raised. However, that term also refers to a technology that is used for handling information safely, generating traceability and monitoring the different processes effectively.

In Latin America, Blockchain has been growing slowly but steadily, and is expected to reach US $1,356 million by 2024. Whilst Argentina and Mexico are the countries with the greatest progress, its use in Colombia is still incipient. According to projections by the consulting firm Frost & Sullivan and the Vice Presidency of Innovation and Sector Intelligence of Procolombia, this business will go from US $4.8 million registered in 2018 to US $92.7 million in 2024.

How Blockchain and Bitcoin can save the world

Initiatives have been developed in the public sector to boost the use of Blockchain, such as student electronic voting, land ownership and academic certificates, inter alia. However, the regulatory frameworks still remain to be developed. Phillippe Boland, CEO of Token Partner, considers that work is necessary to integrate the interests of the State, academia, the productive sector and civil society.

Boland says that it is essential that Blockchain become a high usability technology that allows control over data. In his opinion, people should be trained in this technology and, in that sense, universities play an important role. The Engineering Faculty of the National University is currently working to deliver academic certificates with Blockchain.

Ana María Moreno, Coordinator of the University Network for the Promotion of Research on Information and Communication Technologies (UxTIC), states that the most important aspect about this technology is the transfer of value. For the education sector this is an alternative as it allows making the traceability of the subjects. In the end, students will obtain their diplomas, based on the credits earned throughout their university studies, thus avoiding the traffic of diplomas.

Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain in Colombia

Alejandro Fernández, founder and CEO of Token Sport and advisor on the subject, says that Blockchain is being valued for its application in precision agriculture, aiming at having the traceability of crops. Medical cannabis companies are interested in Blockchain, since they can track the growth of plants, their characteristics, the fruits that they produce and the conditions for this to occur. This information can be accessed by potential buyers anywhere in the world.

The expert says that Colombia has achieved much progress regarding usability, but not in terms of development. However, he notes that Ruta N recently inaugurated the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which uses blockchain for research, development and application. A proof of the usability of the blockchain is Qubit Labs, a company created by Juan Carlos Marín and Lina Sánchez, which allows acquiring tickets for cultural, musical and sporting events, using Blockchain to send a QR code to the cell phone.

This allows users to save time and money, since they must not go to a ticket office or wait for a home delivery service to acquire a ticket. Entrepreneurs agree that companies have not understood blockchain very well due to lack of knowledge. The role of academia is essential for this business to develop and the country to expand the offer beyond commodities and traditional products.
