Apple’s CEO Assured that It Will Not Launch a Cryptocurrency

Tim Cook believes that money cannot be in complete control of the people who lead private companies. He thinks cryptocurrencies should be under the control of the State.

The CEO of Apple, one of the most important technology companies in the United States, Tim Cook, denied rumors about the launch of its cryptocurrency. He said they will not conduct any development in this field. This happens although many technology companies have taken the initiative to create their own digital asset.

The statements were issued in a recent interview published by Les Echos, where he also said that this can be detrimental to the State economy, explaining that money control must be in the hands of the State and not in the hands of private companies.

“I deeply believe that money must remain in the hands of the State. I am not comfortable with the idea that a private group creates a competing currency. A private company does not have to seek to gain power in this way”, Tim Cook said.

This comment was said by the businessman despite the existence of large private companies in the same country that are in cryptocurrency launch projects. In this way, Cook recommended some companies to avoid these practices that, in his opinion, would affect the balance of power in the states, subtracting control and management from government authorities.

Something for Governments

Thus, the comment generated controversies because some people believe that the message was directed to the renowned Facebook company, which seeks to launch its cryptocurrency, Libra, to the market by mid-2020.

Despite this, Cook gave much importance to the idea that governments are the ones who should have control of money, and establish the rules and management of it in the global economy. He thinks money should not be in control of private businesses.

“Money, like Defense, must remain in the hands of the States, it is at the heart of their mission. We elect the representatives to assume government responsibilities. Companies are not elected, they do not have to go on this ground”, the CEO of Apple commented.

Another Methods of Payment

In this way, Apple has developed new ways and methods that help facilitate payments in fiat currencies for all its services. One example is the creation of Apple Pay, a direct payment platform for the company’s services, and the Apple Card a tool that facilitates these transactions. Thus, it leaves aside all kinds of development or research in the cryptographic area or for those purposes.

However, despite these statements offered by Cook, one of Apple Pay’s main representatives, Jennifer Bailey, claimed to be closely monitoring the crypto industry, also recognizing that it has great potential for long-term technology.

Also, Apple has partnered with the Cupertino firm, which has mentioned the technology company as one of its collaborators in its blockchain project. In this way, maybe the company is conducting cooperative contracts with blockchain companies.

The Fed Suggests that the USA Should Develop Its Own Cryptocurrency

Patrick Harker believes that within the next five years the nation might develop its cryptocurrency. However, he considers that the United States will not be the only country to enter this market.

Patrick Harker, president of the Federal Reserve of Philadelphia, believes that sooner or later the United States will develop its own cryptocurrency. The representative considers “inevitable” a near future where central banks around the world begin to issue assets that are also called digital currencies.

The manager made these remarks at the Community Banking Conference in St. Louis, held on the week from September 30th to October 4th, according to Reuters. Patrick Harker noted that the United States will not be the first country to issue a national cryptocurrency, but it should begin to understand that it has to engage in that sector.

Harker estimates that, possibly within the next five years, the United States will have a cryptocurrency payment system, namely the FEDNow project. It would allow real-time transfers, which is based on the idea of Bitcoin, as announced by the Federal Reserve last August.

At the moment, Harker believes that cryptocurrencies are still maturing and the US dollar will continue being the currency used as a reserve of value worldwide. For that reason, the United States may not be showing the same interest as Iran and China in owning its own crypto asset.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that Patrick Harker has talked about cryptocurrencies positively. For example, two years ago he told students at the University of Pennsylvania that the properties to record blockchains data were valuable for their ability to authenticate. However, at that time Harker seemed unconvinced with the idea of cryptocurrencies themselves, a position that apparently changed.

Libra and Other Cryptocurrencies on the Table

In a matter of a few days, two government representatives of the United States have decided to reactivate the discussion on the development of cryptocurrencies in the United States. Additionally to Patrick Harker, Congressmen Jerome Powell, French Hill and Bill Foster have indicated the need to develop a cryptocurrency issued by the Central Bank.

Powell, Hill and Foster asked the Federal Reserve authorities to clarify their plans for the issuance of a digital currency. The congressmen stressed that the United States should take the lead in this sector, given that other nations have similar projects that could succeed worldwide.

In this sense, it seems that there is not only internal pressure on the issue of cryptocurrencies in the United States, but also in the rest of the world. A growing number of government representatives and companies are interested in creating payment systems based on cryptocurrencies, as Facebook has done with its cryptocurrency Libra.

The Libra project was also raised at the conference that Harker attended. Banks in the region would have formalized a complaint against this new Facebook payment system, referring to it as a threat to monetary liquidity. In this sense, it seems that the cryptocurrency ecosystem has become again a topic of conversation in the US government dome.

Federal Reserve Ensures That the US Should Issue Its Cryptocurrency

Patrick Harker says that in about 5 years the US would be prepared to launch its own cryptoactive.

Currently, many governments have been surprised by the announcement of Facebook about the launch of its own cryptocurrency, Libra, raising interest and curiosity about these new technologies that are increasingly involved in the economic life of citizens in different countries.

Following this idea, the President of the Federal Reserve of Philadelphia, Patrick Harker, said that governments like the United States will have to develop and issue a cryptocurrency sooner or later. Therefore, it considers that the Central Banks of all countries will have to adapt to these new digital currencies; hence, in the end they must launch their own crypto assets to the local and global market.

These statements were issued by the public official, according to the Reuters news agency at the St. Louis Community Banking Conference. In addition to this, Harker added that the State must understand that in the end it must be involved in this market and avoid overcoming or not having control over it. The US would not be the only country in the world that would have its own cryptocurrency officially used by the State.

Then, the president of the Federal Reserve predicts that, perhaps, in about five or six years, the American country should have a complete system of payments which supports the character of cryptocurrencies with a government control that oversees the transactions.

This service has already been announced by the Federal Reserve institution, in the middle of this year. This is the system that will allow transactions and transfers of funds in real time. The FEDNow project will have a solid foundation in the special features of the system used by Bitcoin for its network.

Despite considering that cryptocurrencies have a clear future among the global economy, Harker maintains the certainty that the US dollar will remain the main currency used for world reserves. Through said statements, the president of the Federal Reserve considers that the US government closely monitors this technology and maintains the same level of interest in the asset as other potentially economically prosperous countries.

Patrick Harker is considered a defender of cryptographic technology since some time ago he gave a few words to some students of the University of Pennsylvania, in the United States. On that occasion, Harker praised the authentication properties of the registered data that blockchain technology possesses. He motivated to consider blockchain technology as the basis for the correct safekeeping of vital information for governments and public and private registries.

On that occasion, the president of the Federal Reserve emphasized his speech much more towards the facilities and properties that blockchain technology offers and not so much to the use of cryptocurrencies.

Apparently, the position of Harker regarding this issue has taken this course when evaluating the current situation of digital currencies in different markets and countries, as well as considering that Libra, the cryptocurrency of Facebook would be launched in 2020 and other countries are right now evaluating to create their own cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin’s Greatest Value Is in Its People

Transparency, privacy, and equality are some of the principles of the Bitcoin community. Technologies are based on the behavior and ideology of the community that uses them.

Humanity is one of the most valuable resources that human beings have and Bitcoin proves it. This seems very obvious, but it happens that many times we forget our power of transformation and responsibility as individuals. Technologies do not change people, at least not magically, but those people that create and use these technologies to transform society.

A user, doubledowndope, said that he had accidentally received 1 BTC two years ago. The Internet user reported that in 2017 he had made his first purchase of bitcoins in Tucson, Arizona. After having communicated with the seller through Localbitcoins, he met him at a local café to settle the sale. Doubledowndope would pay USD 3,000 in cash for the price of 1 BTC.

However, at the end of the afternoon, two bitcoins for the price of one arrived in his wallet. The keychain had processed the transaction twice without detecting any error. Doubledowndope said that the seller called him desperately a few hours after the exchange, to check if an additional bitcoin had actually arrived at the address and if he could recover it. Everything seemed to favor the buyer, who could simply decide not to return the money transferred.

This user decided to return the money, since he considered that honesty, apart from Bitcoin’s transparency, was a more valuable asset than that additional bitcoin. He explained that everyone should learn that Bitcoin is not just about value, wealth or power but about people, since people are more important.

People Are the Key

The words of this anonymous person should echo in everyone’s mind: “People are more important.” It is not about power, or wealth, or even technology, regardless how safe and reliable it may be. In the end, only the example and initiative of a person can change his or her destiny.

The appearance of Bitcoin can definitely mark a before and after in modern history. Its ability to decentralize power allows much more democratic forms of governance on the Internet. It considerably improves the paradigms of secure communications and privacy proposed by previous technologies. Besides, its immutable public record promotes a more transparent society, which is not trusted until the information is verified.

It can be said that Bitcoin is a huge grain of sand that pushes humankind to transform its models of government, interaction and socialization. None of that countercurrent flow could nevertheless be possible if it were not for one or several people who put the idea into practice. In other words, the creation of Bitcoin occurred thanks to Satoshi Nakamoto and his contributors.

Cypherpunks, that particular group of the 1990’s comprised of scientists, cryptographers and enthusiasts that believed in a more private and free Internet, laid the foundations of what today is known as Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin could have been something else or more of the same.

Its creators may have developed a technology that allows censoring a few, distributes power among an elite few, and ensures wealth in the hands of the powerful. However, since it is constituted under the principles of equality, privacy and decentralization, it has become a weapon of resistance.

Telegram’s Blockchain Platform Could Comply Its Release Date

TON should be ready on October 31st, according to an e-mail its investors received. Otherwise, the contract would be canceled.

Telegram Open Network (TON), the blockchain platform of Telegram, is close to its launch date, which is scheduled for October 31st. Recently, the company gave the news to its investors via mail and also mentioned it in a channel of the messaging application.

The Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of TON Labs, Mitja Goroshevsky, confirmed that the mail is real. Goroshevsky commented that the investors received emails from the central Telegram team with news about how the plan is going.

In addition, the CTO indicated that investors must provide their keys to Telegram before October 16th through a key generator. This way, they can receive the tokens called “Grams” that they bought.

TON Labs is a tool to create startups. The platform is aimed to Telegram Open Network developers.

Telegram Will Not Execute the Network

In the message sent through the Telegram channel related to this project, it was stressed that Telegram will refrain from executing or governing the network it created.

“Investors have to select validators. Telegram and the TON Foundation will not serve as validators after launch”.

It is important to remember that, in early September, TON released its code. This allowed the community to test complete nodes, validation nodes and a block explorer.

Until now, everything is almost ready to meet the deadline for the launch of TON, although previously this date was postponed.

The first release date was scheduled for September 1st, but it was delayed and the reasons were not very clear for the entire community.

Last February, the company announced it would delay the project. In March, Telegram told to its investors that TON was 90% prepared, but that the delays were due to the “innovative nature of development”.

Unfortunately, this decision caused some stakeholders to feel distrust, especially investors, who hope to acquire their Grams. Therefore, some of these investors tried to sell their tokens. However, if they had sold their Grams, they could be sued for canceling their purchase contract.

Now, thanks to the email that informs how everything is going, investors can feel more confident about their investments. The decision to send this email, which ensures that everything is ready by October 31st, was right and is something positive for the members of this crypto community.

The blockchain of Telegram has been built almost entirely in secret. There is not much information about this construction process. One of the best known data was that at the beginning of 2018, 1.7 billion dollars were raised to boost the initiative. This is one of the few things that is known.

Launching the platform before October 31st will also be essential to avoid canceling the contracts since, if this date expires, the contracts would be considered without effect.

Thus, TON will comply the expected date for its launch, at the end of October, and after overcoming moments of uncertainty.

Latin America at Risk of New Cryptocurrency-Stealing Malware

The virus monitors the clipboard and replaces the data in the cryptocurrency wallet. It mainly attacks banking institutions and companies in the cryptocurrency ecosystem from Brazil and Mexico.

The Slovak company ESET, developer of antivirus software, announced on October 3rd that it discovered a new malware that can steal cryptocurrencies and that has particularly spread throughout Latin America.

According to the ESET, the new virus belongs to the Casbaneiro malware family and its main objective is to track data from cryptocurrency wallets. To do this, it monitors the contents of the clipboard and, in case of finding the information that it is seeking, the attackers replace the data with those of their own cryptocurrency wallet.

The report shows one of the scammers’ wallets, which received around 1.2 bitcoins, equivalent to USD 9,812 at the current price. The number of transactions registered in that wallet is 70.

At the same time, the company reports that Casbaneiro is similar to the previously identified Amavaldo family of banking Trojans. For now, the malware primarily attacks banking institutions and cryptocurrency companies from Brazil and Mexico. However, it does not discount its possible extension to other countries in Latin America and the rest of the world.

The experts discovered that the new Trojan uses the same tactics as Amavaldo, which consist of using pop-ups and fake molds, in order to deceive the victims. These attacks generally focus on persuading users to take urgent or necessary action, such as installing a software update or verifying credit or bank account information.

Once the victim’s device has been invaded, Casbaneiro uses backdoor commands to make screenshots, restrict access to various banking sites and record keystrokes.

One of the aspects highlighted in the report is that Casbaneiro is able to hide the domain and port of the C&C server in several locations, such as fake DNS records, in electronic documents stored in Google Docs or in fake websites that supposedly belong to legitimate organizations. On some occasions, the C&C server domains have been encrypted and hidden in legitimate sites, especially descriptions in several YouTube videos, especially in those about cooking and soccer.

ESET experts recommend that, as a precautionary measure, the basic security rules be followed when entering personal data to make online payments, as well as a reliable solution to protect the devices.

At Risk of Cryptocurrency Theft

New threats often arise in the world of cryptocurrencies, which are coveted by black hat hackers who specialize in creating new methods to steal and profit at the expense of organizations or users.

On September 26th, the company Juniper Threat Labs, a cyber threat intelligence portal, disclosed the discovery of a spyware that uses Telegram as a communication channel with its Command and Control Center. Among other things, the malware is able to automatically replace cryptocurrency wallet addresses copied to the clipboard.

In mid-September, a team of cybersecurity researchers discovered a new variety of cryptocurrency mining malware, which not only illegally extracts cryptocurrencies but also provides attackers with universal access to the infected system through a “secret master password.”

In fact, a report from McAfee Labs revealed that cryptojacking is growing rapidly. According to the study, cryptocurrency mining malware campaigns rose 29% from the fourth quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2019.

On the other hand, a BBC report published in August highlighted a cryptojacking Monero virus that successfully hacked 850,000 servers, mainly in Latin America.
