Ethereum Can Make Databases like Google Better, according to Vitalik Buterin

He stressed that a decentralized network is free from government censorship. Blockchains are based on confidence as opposed to websites.

Bitcoin influencer and independent developer Udi Wertheimer recently presented on Twitter his new show The Uncontrollable. In its first edition, he had Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin as a host. They both debated the concern of whether blockchains are better than web databases.

During the meeting, which consisted of discussing a particular topic tweeting their views, Buterin answered questions. One of them was about the reason why Ethereum is better than a single-node private chain that would run as a new hypothetical Google service.

Before delving further into his explanation, Buterin clarified that he would call “GoogThereum” the merger of a blockchain like Ethereum, with a database like Google. In this regard, he added three risks that such a platform would face.

Centralized vs. Decentralized

Detailing the risks, the Ethereum co-founder said that GoogThereum could censor its users or interfere with an application, due to possible pressure from the US government. Second, GoogThereum could censor defending Google’s strategic interests, and third, GoogThereum could be hacked or unintentionally broken. He clarified that the Ethereum blockchain is free from all these dangers as it is decentralized.

Buterin noted that concern about power abuse by centralized applications, in general, is a common concern of foreign governments. He added an article that reads that the head of data privacy in Germany has told federal agencies not to use WhatsApp, amid concerns that it feeds Facebook with private data.

After Buterin’s reply, the host of the program raised his point of view, noting that the web allows eradicating censorship to a certain extent as unhappy users could theoretically move to other servers. In other words, a citizen who feels at risk in Google could change to Amazon.

In this regard, Buterin expressed his opinion on the construction of a consortium blockchain with nodes managed by Google, Huawei, and The Pirate Bay, for example. Even though this approach would be a move to address various concerns, he believes that such a solution would not be so easy to build, the reason why it has never existed.

Wertheimer said that he found it curious that he had mentioned The Pirate Bay, which is a good example of how websites can survive censorship attempts. He also asked what could go wrong with the current fairly distributed web model.

The Pirate Bay is a search engine for BitTorrent files, through which it is possible to download all kinds of multimedia material. Since 2005, it has managed to survive persecutions, regulations, and closings amid multiple controversies.

Buterin added that cryptocurrency projects cannot experience a fate similar to that of The Pirate Bay, in which there are domain omission, illegal work, and everything that ensures that the site is active. This could work for torrent operators, but not for the founders of cryptocurrency projects. Such tactics cannot be used for the long-term maintenance of a decentralized network, which is much more complex than a website.

Demand for Ross Ulbricht’s Freedom through Billboard in Time Square

Ulbricht was arrested and sent to prison in 2013 for creating Silk Road. Even though Ulbricht is in prison, he receives a lot of support from outside.

The “Free Ross” movement has hired a billboard in Time Square as part of the campaign to free Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web Silk Road smuggling market.

Ross Ulbricht is currently serving a double-life sentence for his role as an entrepreneur in a dark web market place. Ulbricht has spent seven years in prison and it seems unlikely that he will ever be released without forgiveness. He is currently 36 years old.

According to a Twitter post from the “Ross Clemency” account, the billboard has been rented for several months. The tweet also states that a “single generous contributor” paid for the campaign message, which was not funded by any of the donations they have received.

Double-Life Sentence for Silk Road Crimes

Ulbricht was arrested and sent to prison in 2013 for establishing the dark web Silk Road market. He operated the site under the alias “Dread Pirate Robert”, a clear tribute to the main character of The Princess Bride.

The online marketplace on the dark web, Silk Road, reached its peak in popularity in 2011, pioneering mail-order drugs and another smuggling. Unfortunately, they also used Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to trade on the black market.

Court documents from that time show that the dark web site conducted around 1,229,465 transactions during its two years of operation. Ulbricht received a percentage of all operations.

Solutions for Child Pornography from Prison

Even though Ulbritch has no Internet access, he has been able to stay active in the cryptocurrency community through his friends and supporters, who post their contributions online.

Last May 20th, one of the followers of Ulbritch’s Medium account proposed automated solutions “ZKANN”, which the creator of Silk Road believes to be an effective measure against the distribution of child pornography and pedophilia on encrypted platforms.

Unfortunately, the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum has become the preferred payment method for human trafficking and Internet-based sexual exploitation services, which include extortion pornography and the sexual assault of minors and children.

Ulbricht says that many other large platforms already deploy algorithms to automatically moderate the content. He also recommends that encrypted platform operators combine zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) with artificial neural networks (ANN) to detect content that shows child abuse.

Furthermore, he suggests that data from law enforcement agencies be used to train ZKANN (ZKP + ANN) to identify child pornography and other inappropriate content. He notes that it would prevent such content from being released in other public systems.

The same as the namesake for his alias “Dread Pirate Robert”, it seems that Ulbricht is even more than he looks. He has a bad public reputation for being a drug dealer and misusing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. However, he has some talents that are worth respecting, such as his ability to create blockchain tools to help other people. Maybe this is the reason why he has received such strong support for leniency.

Argentine Peso to Become a Collectible like Venezuelan Bolivar

The inflationary rise in recent years and devaluation are affecting the value of the Argentine peso. Some Venezuelans commonly use bolivar banknotes to create works of art.

Among the factors that may be leading the peso (ARS) to become a collector’s item with no real monetary value, the most prominent are the inflationary rise in recent years and the sharp devaluation of the Argentine fiat currency.

Since Néstor Kirchner’s presidency (2003-2007), the average annualized inflation rate per presidency has escalated from 11.6% to 40% in the era of Mauricio Macri. The situation has become worse at present during Alberto Fernández’s government with a rebound of 53.8% inflation, only in 2019; being the highest since 1991.

The Argentine peso is also suffering depreciation, compared to other national fiat currencies such as the US dollar. This “contempt” for the local fiat currency further was accelerated due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last March 20th, when the Fernández government decreed the mandatory quarantine, the Argentine peso exhibited an exchange rate of 85 units per dollar in the parallel market. However, two months later, this rate was already 125 Argentine pesos per US dollar, in a country with new exchange controls imposed since 2019. In the official market, the current exchange rate per US dollar is 68 Argentine pesos.

These elements reflect in the cost for the country to produce the 1-peso coin, for example. In Argentina, making a coin of this denomination is more expensive than its actual monetary value, something that would also happen with coins of two, five, and 10 pesos.

By combining these indicators and assuming that the government does not apply corrective measures on time, Argentina might experience something that is usual Venezuela. Hyperinflation and the devaluation of the national fiat currency and consecutive years of economic recession have led some Venezuelans to create works of art, figures, toys, or costumes with banknotes that have no value.

From Devaluation to Art

For years Venezuelans have turned bolivar banknotes into canvas to give wings to their creativity. Even from abroad, bolivars have also served for multiple artists to express allegorical themes to the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, for example.

The factors that led this situation to occur in Venezuela are the same that are taking place in Argentina, but on a much larger scale in the oil-producing country. In 2018, hyperinflation reached 1.7 million in percentage terms, is the highest in the world. In 2019, according to the finance committee of the National Assembly, the figure fell to 7,374.4%, once again with the worst record on a global scale.

In the case of Venezuelan artisans working with worthless banknotes, they require up to 800 pieces to make a purse or about 400 to make a small hat.

Besides, hundreds of designs have been captured on the front of the 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, or 500 bolivars banknotes of the previous monetary cone, as though they were toy money. Some represent characters from the “Star Wars” saga, the Simpsons, the Joker, or some natural Venezuelan monuments.

Artists such as Karina Monaca, Rubby Cobain, and Jon Tompkins are giving worthless Venezuelan banknotes new value when turning them into works of art alluding to Bitcoin. While the main cryptocurrency is currently trading at USD 9,075.10, the Venezuelan currency has experienced the worst hyperinflation in the world.

JP Morgan: CBDCs Threaten US Dollar Hegemony

These digital currencies are the alternative that central banks are looking to develop in order not to be out of the game.

The financial Company JP Morgan recently commented that Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) could be a threat to the global hegemony of the US dollar.

The US financial advisory company Bloomberg published a report in which the bank’s US chief economist stated that: “There is no country with more to lose from the disruptive potential of digital currency than the United States”.

“This revolves primarily around U.S. dollar hegemony. Issuing the global reserve currency and the medium of exchange for international trade in commodities, goods, and services convey immense advantages”, Josh Younger, Head of U.S. Interest-Rate Derivatives Strategy, and Michael Feroli, Chief U.S. economist, wrote in the report.

According to Bloomberg, central banks could introduce digital currencies, but they’re unlikely to have the transformative impact some have hoped. Thus, JP Morgan doubts that CBDCs will soon replace the dollar as the global reserve currency. However, the report warns that the “fragile” peripheral aspects of the dominance of the US dollar can erode, including trade finance, and the SWIFT message system.

Digitizing the Hegemony of the US Dollar

The analysts added that even an “aligned power” like the European Union (EU) might want to reduce U.S. sway over global payment systems. JP Morgan also commented that other countries could use digital currencies to circumvent the SWIFT system and economic sanctions. This action would undermine the power of the United States of America on a global stage with the global reserve currency.

“Offering a cross-border payment solution built on top of a digital dollar would, particularly if designed to be minimally disruptive to the structure of the domestic financial system, be a very modest investment to protect a key means to project power in the global economy”, the inform explains.

This inform concludes saying that “for high-income countries, and the U.S. in particular, digital currency is an exercise in geopolitical risk management”. Besides, Chairman Jerome Powell said, last February, that the Federal Reserve was undertaking broad work looking at the issues concerning a digital currency whilst making no commitments.

CBDCs Seek to Be an Alternative to Cryptocurrencies

Some users and even economists believe that Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are “a kind of rearguard action that central banks struggle with because they don’t like cryptocurrencies”.

China, through the People’s Bank of China, wants to launch its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Similarly, Cambodia, Thailand, Bahrain, and Uruguay are working on developing their fiat currencies as digital currencies.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is also working on this issue. Last January, the WEF presented its annual event on the debate and resolution of global challenges. One of the topics for discussion was helping central banks understand CBDCs, as well as helping them launch their CBDCs, if necessary.

The WEF also launched a framework called the CBDC Policy-Maker Tool Kit to help central banks wishing to create their CBDC. The WEF created this framework in conjunction with more than 40 central banks and international organizations.

“This document serves as a possible framework to ensure that any CBDC implementation fully considers the potential costs and benefits, evaluating a multitude of risks and evaluating implementation and governance strategies, alternative solutions, and other important factors”, the WEF explained.

CBDCs represent a growing trend in technology adoption. They promise faster cross-border transactions, reduced transaction costs, and financial inclusion for settlements worldwide.

Drop to USD 2 in Average Cost per Bitcoin Transaction

The price of the first cryptocurrency has decreased by 3.85% in recent weeks. The congestion on the Bitcoin network is steadily decreasing.

Bitcoin’s price has been fluctuating in recent weeks. Last May 20th, the price of the cryptocurrency was USD 9,525, whilst it is USD 9,158 at the time of writing this article. These figures represent a drop of 3.85%. Market capitalization increased to USD 168,390 million, which represents a fall of 3.82%, compared to USD 175,091 million previously recorded.

Bitcoin’s daily trading volume continues to decline. On May 20th, the trading volume was USD 36,067 million, but it is currently around USD 31,825 million. The drop in this metric in recent days is 11.76%, whilst the decrease in this metric was previously 14.78%.

On the other hand, the volatility of Bitcoin’s price remains in ranges similar to those of previous weeks. On May 20th, volatility was 13.38%, and it is currently around 13.57%. Finally, Bitcoin’s dominance is currently at 65.9%, representing a drop of 0.9% in recent days.

Bitcoin Mining

The size of the blockchain of the Bitcoin network is 276,951 Megabytes (Mb), which means an increase of 2,215 Mb, compared to previous days.

Hash rate continues to drop compared to previous days, leaving this metric at 90,293 Exahashes per second. The hash rate was previously 98,356 Exahashes per second. When analyzing the hash rate graph, it is possible to see that this metric has decreased steadily since May 12th. Furthermore, the network’s mining difficulty had an adjustment and is in the range of 15,138 Terabytes.

In recent days, there have been changes in the distribution of the 5 main mining pools on the network. F2pool decreased to 18%, AntPool increased to 13%, BTC.com increased to 13%, and Poolin remains at 13%. 1THash & 58COIN is in fifth place, with 7% of the network’s hash rate.

In the Bitcoin mempool the weight of each transaction per second is 1,205 VBytes. Besides, its size is 48 Mb, which is equivalent to 38 blocks to confirm. This implies a decongestion of the network since the size of the meempol was previously 128 MB, around 91 blocks to confirm. At the time of writing this article, there are 9,705 transactions to confirm for every 1 sats/VByte.

The average cost per transaction decreased to USD 2,402 sats/Vbyte, which was previously USD 6,429 sats/Vbyte. The average cost per transaction has decreased because there is no more congestion on the network; thus, transactions do not require high fees to confirm quickly. On the other hand, the number of confirmed daily transactions increased to 295,782, compared to the 274,897 confirmed transactions in previous days.

Blockchain Technology

Last May 26th, Chris Belcher released a design for an implementation based on an old technique, called CoinSwap. The proposal allows for non-custodial transactions to be camouflaged improving privacy, based on the idea of atomic swaps.

Belcher not only presented the first viable implementation design for CoinSwap. He also assured that he will continue working on the independent software, which will turn the tool into a Bitcoin wallet application.

Blockchain developers should always seek ways to make improvements that guarantee users’ security and privacy. In this way, investors will be able to safeguard their holdings without fear of being robbed.

Exchange Rate Controls Are Challenges with Dollarization through Stablecoins

The call comes in the face of new government-imposed restrictions on the US dollar. The use of DAI as an alternative is gaining popularity among Argentines.

Argentine citizens are seeking alternatives to protect themselves from devaluation and inflation, whilst the government continues to impose restrictions. This situation makes the process of dollarization increasingly complicated.

In this context, the exchange Satoshi Tango is promoting the “digital dollar”, which is a set of assets grouped under the name of stablecoins. They represent an option to escape from the traditional financial system, allowing users to safeguard value.

Satoshi Tango launched a call for users to dollarize their savings through stablecoins (or anchored cryptocurrencies). In the case of this exchange, it refers to the use of the stablecoin DAI.

DAI, which is backed by Ether (ETH), offers an alternative to preserve value, without depending on banks. It is not necessary to have a bank account, it is easier to store and protect than cash, and it is easily transferable worldwide.

Renowned Argentine bitcoiner Franco Amati welcomes Satoshi Tango’s challenge. He mentioned the disadvantages of the option to dollarize through DAI. For example, he explains that the main risk arises in the security that smart contracts and safeguard keys can guarantee when operating on centralized exchanges.

More Restrictions

Since May 25th, the access to US dollars has been more limited in Argentina, since the National Securities Commission (CNV) has provided a “parking”. This is the minimum allowed period of 5 business days to buy bonds or shares with pesos, to then settle them in a foreign currency and make transfers to foreign entities.

The MEP dollar (or stock market dollar) and the CCL dollar (or counted liquidation dollar) emerged as alternative measures for citizens to access US dollars. As it was “politically and socially unsustainable” to allow Argentines to buy US dollars freely, with the released capital and financial account, the government established exchange rate controls.

In mid-May, the Central Bank issued an analysis justifying the continuity of exchange rate and capital controls. The rising price of the US dollar due to devaluation does not discourage the demand for foreign currency. On the contrary, it accelerates it, causing damage to the purchasing power of wages.

For the Central Bank executives, controls on the capital and financial account of the balance of payments are necessary. They consider that they can contribute to the country’s economic recovery and comprehensive development.

In this way, the Government of Argentina tries to reduce the gap between these alternatives (MEP dollar and CCL dollar), concerning the official US dollar. The market expects more pressure on the informal US dollar since many citizens see it as the only way to access the fiat currency without restrictions.

The interest that cryptocurrencies are generating in Argentina is increasingly evident. The country’s economic problems are the main factor why the trading volume on LocalBitcoins has increased in recent months.
