As in the Case with Tether, the US Dollar Also Does Not Back USDC 100%

The reserves that back USDC include US dollars in cash, certificates of deposit, corporate bonds, and securities. The report indicates audited funds of around USD 22,200, less than the amount of USDC in circulation.

As in the case of Tether (USDT) in the past, the US dollar also does not fully back stablecoin USD Coin (USDC). That information appears in the most recent reserve report from Circle, the company the currency. They released it after an audit by a tax firm outside the company.

Tax advisory firm Grant Horton breaks down in the report the reserves that back USDC. They note that there are only about 61% of dollars in cash or equivalents between them. The remainder includes certificates of deposit, securities, debt obligations of companies and financial institutions, and bonds of companies and government agencies.

While US dollars deposited in banks do not fully support USDC, reserves do not fully cover the coins in circulation. The information that the tax firm audited indicates a total fund of around USD 22.2 billion. However, nearly 28 billion USDC is currently circulating.

While the reserve report relates to July, the supply of the stablecoin has increased since then. However, the reserves and the existing USDC on those dates also do not match.

Messari data show that there were already more than 25 billion USDC circulating in July. That is roughly USD 3 billion more than what Circle’s reserves back.

As with USDC, there has been criticism about the Tether Limited (USDT) stablecoin for the way they treat their reserves.

A few days ago, a breakdown of the reserves backing USDT revealed that almost half of them are in commercial paper and certificates of deposit.

Additionally, the auditors noted that Circle owns USD 6.28 billion in cash and bank deposits, representing 10% of the reserves. They also revealed that it has USD 1 billion in reverse repurchase notes, equivalent to 1.6% of the funds. Likewise, they said that USD 15.28 billion in US Treasury bills correspond to 24.3% of their reserves.

USDC and USDT Are Not Stablecoins, According to Paxos

Paxos, a rival to both USDC and USDT, referred to the reserves of those stablecoins in July. The company behind the stablecoin of the same name considers that neither of them is an actual stablecoin.

The Paxos coin issuing company said that stablecoins are not what they claim to be. They stated that those currencies do not accurately reflect the price of the US dollar.

The Chief Compliance Officer of the company Dan Burstein argued that no financial regulator comprehensively monitors USDC and Tether reserves.

Although Paxos has appreciated, the Circle and Tether Limited currencies dominate the market for stablecoins based on the US dollar. USDT has become the reference standard for trading cryptocurrencies for US dollars on exchanges.

According to CoinGecko, there are more than 50 types of stablecoins, having Tether at the top with a 57.7% dominance. It precedes USDC (23.6%), Binance USD (9.8%), DAI (4.7%), TerraUSD (1.7%), TrueUSD (1.4%), and Paxos Standard (0.8%).

The President of Argentina Does Not Rule Out Using Cryptocurrencies Although They Are a Care Issue

Fernández highlighted that crypto assets could be an excellent solution to combat inflation. However, he admitted that he does not understand how they work and perceives some risks in the system.

The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, recently said that the discussion about cryptocurrencies is global and that they are a care matter. However, he did not rule out that it could be a positive development that sets the country on a good path.

The Argentine president admitted that he is unaware of the operation of crypto assets and referred to the insecurity that he believes they entail. However, he also stressed that they allow fighting inflation, an economic evil that has affected the South American nation for decades.

He stated that the discussion about the functioning of cryptocurrencies is not an Argentine debate but a global one. He believes that it is a care matter as he does not exactly understand how that fortune materializes.

In this sense, the Argentine president said that many people in the world share his ignorance. He argued that that situation has not allowed the project or system to finish expanding.

An Option to Take Advantage of Cryptocurrencies

However, Fernández left the door open to take advantage of the economic benefits of cryptocurrencies. In his opinion, they contribute to nullifying the inflationary effect while remaining somewhat like hard currency.

Regarding the insecurity he perceives in the cryptocurrency world, Fernández said it is due to confirmed embezzlements and scams. For that reason, he argued that it is necessary to address that issue with care. Besides, he said he prefers not to delve too deeply to avoid mixing the economic with the technological and the transparent with the opaque.

The official thinks this is an issue to consider, as there are things that no one believed in and are now a reality. For that reason, he recommends not to refuse cryptocurrencies as they can be a good path.

Fernández had already granted those close to him, permission to debate laws that regulate cryptocurrencies in Argentina. The national deputy José Luis Ramón introduced a bill for the collection of salaries in cryptocurrencies. Additionally, he stated that the president gave him the go-ahead to deal with it in Congress.

Fernández Discusses Technology, Information and the State

In addition to cryptocurrencies, Fernández discussed technology as a tool for the State to know more about the population. He expressed that he believes that everything related to banking and the State knowing more is right. He said the issue was not about information but how to use it and put society on the system or online.

The Argentine president added that technology should help everyone know about each other. That would allow the State to know what bad things happen to citizens or whether they did not comply with their obligations.

Although the president of Argentina agrees with cryptocurrencies, he fears that there may be security problems. However, he believes that more knowledge about these assets can help the citizens of his country use them properly.

These Factors Contribute to Predict the Value of Bitcoin 10 Years from Now

Sentiments of optimism and pessimism affect the value of cryptocurrencies, making it hard to predict it. Analysts do not know where the price of Bitcoin will go, but short-term predictions are very accurate.

The price of Bitcoin is one of the most discussed topics worldwide, as millions of people are attentive to its sudden fluctuations. Volatility is one of the factors defining that indicator in the short term, but that is different in the long run.

Supply and demand determine the price of cryptocurrencies, so making predictions about it is complex. The value of Bitcoin is related to the sentiments of optimism and pessimism of many people.

Those guessing the price of Bitcoin also do not know where it is going, even if they use advanced tools for their technical analysis. However, some predictions are more accurate than others, especially in the short term. For that reason, holders are the ones whose trades win beforehand.

The Value of BTC is Not Necessarily a Mystery

Although it is difficult to predict the price of cryptocurrencies, their behavior is not. In other words, the value of Bitcoin in some contexts allows for some security if those conditions occur again.

Forecasting that the price will reach USD 700,000 within ten years would not be very credible. However, it will be very high as the conditions leading to its birth are still there.

The elitism about the access of millions of people to the financial system has become more acute. Besides, governments have increased the level of surveillance and control, as well as inflation. Those conditions have made the appreciation of Bitcoin very vertical.

These Other Factors Ensure the Long-Term Rise in the Price of Bitcoin

Governments and banks have tried to maintain or widen the gap between themselves and people, thus boosting the price of Bitcoin. Furthermore, the pioneering cryptocurrency has other internal characteristics that drive it higher in the long run.

The issuance of the cryptocurrency is limited, as there are only 21 million coins available. That guarantees its appreciation as a growing number of people use it. Contrary to national currencies, Bitcoin is deflationary since its supply will always be the same.

Considering these factors, the value of Bitcoin makes long-term investment one of the best options. Although the level of adoption of Bitcoin is imprecise, it could expand with the direct arrival of new generations of investors.

The Use of Cash Disappears Due to Crisis

Another factor that will determine the value of Bitcoin 10 years from now is the dominance of digital platforms. The use of cash is disappearing for reasons of both progress and crisis.

Although cash is disappearing, the custom of governments and centralized entities to control private lives continues. For that reason, decentralized cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and private ones like Monero could win against CBDCs.

These advantages of cryptocurrencies allow predicting that their value will increase proportionally within ten years. Cryptocurrencies are in the early stages, so investing before Bitcoin costs USD 100,000 could bring advantages in the medium and long term.

Binance Cannot Provide Its Services in Chile, According to the CMF

The CMF recommended that investors check on its website whether a company has the authorization to operate. The Chilean government agency cited a recent restriction on Binance in the UK as a precedent.

Chile’s Commission for the Financial Market (CMF) recently reported that the Binance exchange could not provide its services in that nation.

In a statement, the CMF said that the Binance investment platform is an unsupervised entity. For that reason, it does not have permission to operate in the South American country.

The regulator also referred to the alert the British Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) issued in July. In the UK, Binance has no authorization to offer options, futures, and publicly traded notes.

After issuing the warning, the Chilean CMF recommended that people consult their website before investing. They seek that the interested parties verify whether the companies have a registration with the Chilean authorities.

The Commission for the Financial Market does not imply that Chileans cannot access the Binance platform. At this time, there are open buy and sell orders in Chilean pesos with Chilean means of payment for all the currencies of the P2P exchange.

The same document mentions two other companies that offer investments in Chile without the registration that this organization considers necessary. Those firms are Omegapro, a multi-level marketing network, and Swedencap, which defines itself as an international financial broker.

Binance Has Problems Trading in Other Countries

That is the first such announcement from a Latin American market regulator, but countries like Italy have already said similar statements. Without directly attacking Binance, the Italian financial authority warned about alleged risks of trading cryptocurrencies.

The operations of the exchange led by Changpeng Zhao are undergoing total or partial restrictions in several countries. Binance cannot provide its services in the United Kingdom, Cayman Islands, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and Malaysia.

There is tremendous regulatory pressure globally against the largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. That has prompted the company to look for a new CEO who has more experience in this area.

Faced with these limitations to operate, Zhao considers the change in the direction of the platform is necessary. Besides, he believes that the company will have to adapt to the new regulatory requirements for its activities in various countries.

In recent days, Bryan Benson, Binance’s managing director for Latin America, mentioned that the regulations do not take the company by surprise. He said that these measures are a very natural thing to see. He stressed that, despite the discomforts, this would be a stage in the process towards the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies.

There is a lot of fear of using crypto assets among world authorities, which has led them to adjust regulations on them. Several countries have restricted the operations of exchanges and have warned people not to invest in them. Despite that situation, the relevance of Bitcoin will not stop growing while those problems implement better mechanisms to help users.

BitMEX Fined $ 100 Million, and Co-Founders Could Get Back to Prison

The company will split the payment between two government agencies: the CFTC and FinCEN. BitMEX received accusations for offering leveraged and unlicensed products in the United States of America.

A US court decided that the platform for the exchange of derivatives of bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies, BitMEX, will have to complete the payment of a fine that costs at least 100 million dollars.

The Court for the Southern District of New York issued multiple charges against the exchange, including conducting illegal, unlicensed operations and failing to establish “Know Your Customer” (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) protocols.

The money would be split between two government agencies following the case: the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Financial Crime Control Network (FinCEN). The latter explained that BitMEX did not report some dark activities. There are also some operations on the darknet for more than 200 million dollars.

With the court’s decision and the payment of the funds, BitMEX can close the legal case as a company. The agreement does not include the co-founders and former directors that also took part in the case. Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Delo, and Samuel Reed will remain being investigated and could get back to prison. All three have pleaded not guilty.

BitMEX got banned from sealing businesses in the United States of America or offering services to American citizens as it does not have the corresponding permits. According to the CFTC, the bitcoin derivatives platform illegally brought leveraged trading between November 2014 and October last year. The case received media coverage in October of the previous year due to the accusation.

BitMEX Set Up Some Changes in its Business with Bitcoin

After its CEO Arthur Hayes parted ways with the company, BitMEX began to apply measures to comply with international regulators. Some changes in their work with bitcoin include KYC protocols, user verification, hiring of personnel to ensure compliance with the rules, and new services to operators.

BitMEX stated that they take their responsibilities very seriously and will continue to actively contribute with regulators worldwide to make sure that they play a positive role in the future of this extraordinary asset class.

Hayes, the current CEO of BitMEX, turned himself into the authorities in April of this year. However, the executive got out on bail after paying $ 10 million. If he found guilty, he and his two former colleagues could spend up to 5 years in prison.

Hayes, along with other executives responsible for the exchange faced charges for disrupting the United States Bank Secrecy Law. According to the law, they did not apply the anti-money laundering procedures that companies need to keep operating within the North American jurisdiction.

Also, in March of this year, the other co-founder of BitMex, Ben Delo, surrendered to the North American authorities and received indictments in New York.

Binance Is a Target of European Regulations

Binance is currently struggling with limitations that stop it from operating in nations like the UK and Italy. Binance has closed several of its financial products like stock tokens.

Binance is now against the wall. European regulators have been applying a series of new measures through regulations, which have caused the exchange platform to limit its operations in countries such as the United Kingdom.

To prevent these situations and to be able to resume operations, Binance has begun collaborating with European regulators. It now incorporates tools that violate the precious privacy of users. Such is the case of CypherTrace, which shares data on the movement of users’ money between the different exchanges in Europe.

This type of tool intends to prevent illicit behaviors such as money laundering or terrorist financing. It seems more like a blocking procedure for bitcoin (BTC), in which Binance is seen meddling. All these measures pave the way for the future of central bank cryptocurrencies or CBDC for its acronym in English.

The Growing Fear of Regulators

Regulators argue that the reasons for limiting the activities in the exchange are related to the fact that it does not have the requirements to work as a digital asset exchange entity. Although it seems rather menacing due to the size of this exchange, especially when compared to its more direct competitors.

Binance has been increasing the number of products and services, in the range of cryptocurrencies, a measure that is attracting more and more customers.

The case of LocalBitcoins is very curious. Even though in its moment it brought exchange rates thanks to its great liquidity, it was limited to operating with a single cryptocurrency and offering somewhat cumbersome exchange processes.

In Binance, all these actions can happen from a mobile app, which LocalBitcoins does not have. The platform can have the entire suite of services that this exchange makes available (Spot and futures trading, debit cards, stock tokens, P2P exchange, among others).

Binance became a monster in the market thanks to the number of products it offered. Such was its growth that 1 in 5 BTC held by exchanges around the world, has it or had Binance back in June.

Binance, due to the size of its capital and the mass of clients, has become a problem.  Not only because of the illicit behaviors (fraud, cryptocurrency scams, money laundering, among others) that it could bring, but also its progress and what that progress means for central bank digital currency projects.

Binance Might be an Antagonist of CBDCs

Europe is shaping up to launch its cryptocurrencies known as CBDC or central bank digital currencies. Its main goal is to serve as a digital currency, streamlining bureaucratic processes when being transferred. It is a cryptocurrency issued by a Central Bank.

The Digital Euro is already available but not currently working. Some specialists and experts in traditional banking consider it a success. Even the European Central Bank mentions that privacy and security will be in good hands with the Digital Euro.
