There is Growing Interest in Cryptocurrencies Among Institutional Investors

Several factors like significant cryptocurrency adoption improvement have contributed to making institutional investors change their minds. The amount to invest depends on the tolerance to risk, the capacity to absorb losses, and the knowledge of cryptocurrencies.

After long-term price appreciation and widespread Bitcoin adoption, institutional investors show more interest in cryptocurrencies. Due to the pandemic, many people see them as an investment to protect themselves against inflation amid economic uncertainty.

Several factors have contributed to making institutional investors change their minds. The industry has significant adoption improvement and widespread cross-border payment, and people use Bitcoin as a store of value and a hedge against inflation.

Although the ecosystem has expanded significantly, there are still existential risks in investing in cryptocurrencies. The main reasons for that are their volatility and vulnerability to speculation.

However, an annual report by PwC and Elwood Asset Management found that half of the hedge funds worldwide are in cryptocurrencies.

Institutional Investors Show More Interest in Cryptocurrencies

For the first time this year, most institutional investors are participating carefully in the cryptocurrency market.

A growing number of leading entities have adopted cryptocurrencies and are providing services with those assets. Companies like Tesla and MicroStrategy hold Bitcoin in their treasury, while Microsoft, Overstock, and Starbucks accept cryptocurrencies as a method of payment.

Digital payment services like PayPal and Square also allow users to purchase cryptocurrencies through their platforms. Additionally, the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has permitted banks to offer cryptocurrency custody services.

While Elon Musk, Michael Saylor, and Jack Dorsey openly declare their support for Bitcoin, several critics have changed their minds.

The Exposure to Cryptocurrencies Increases

MicroStrategy, Grayscale, Tesla, and Galaxy Digital Holdings have expanded their wallets to include cryptocurrencies. Besides, a considerable number of institutional investors plan to increase their exposure to those assets.

Between July 1st and August 23rd, MicroStrategy bought more Bitcoin (BTC), adding 3,907 BTC to its holdings. The latest purchase allowed Michael Saylor’s firm to have 108,992 BTC.

Christine Sandler, head of sales and marketing at Fidelity Digital Assets, said institutional interest in cryptocurrencies is growing.

Investment management Nickel Digital Asset Management talked about an international survey of 100 institutions. They noted that 82% of the respondents said they would increase their cryptocurrency holdings by 2023.

Furthermore, 58% of those surveyed cited long-term capital growth prospects as the main reason to increase their allocation. Thirty-eight percent said they would be more comfortable with cryptocurrencies, while thirty-four percent attributed it to the improved regulatory environment.

The Amount of Money People Should Invest in Cryptocurrencies

Experts say that newcomers thinking of entering this market must do it with caution, mainly through education.

The amount people should invest will depend on their tolerance to risk, their financial capacity to absorb losses, and their knowledge of cryptocurrencies.

Most asset managers using crypto for some customers recommend sticking to a small allocation, like 0.5-1% of the total wallet.

While the cryptocurrency industry moves very fast, no one can accurately predict what would occur in space. Many will agree that Bitcoin adoption will continue to increase.

The Central Bank of Cuba Accepts Payments in Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies on the Island

The resolution of the Central Bank does not clarify which cryptocurrencies they will accept, nor does it establish their prices. The blocking of remittances from the United States would be a factor pushing the measure.

The Central Bank of Cuba recently announced that it authorized using some cryptocurrencies in commercial transactions. The resolution, signed by Marta Sabina Wilson González, president of the institution, does not clarify some essential aspects. For example, it does not specify the cryptocurrencies that people can or cannot use and the price they must consider for the transactions.

According to the latest provision of the extraordinary Official Gazette, the Central Bank of Cuba explains what it means by a virtual asset. They define it as a digital representation of value that people can trade or transfer digitally and use for payments or investments. According to the document, people also know that term as digital asset, crypto asset, cryptocurrency, virtual currency, and digital currency.

Although the Official Gazette does not specify which cryptocurrencies or tokens will be valid, it is clear that the Central Bank will accept Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). Those are the two most recognized and valued cryptocurrencies in the market worldwide. The text does not indicate the price users should take into account when making a transaction.

Furthermore, the regulations do not state that merchants will have to accept payments in cryptocurrencies. Decree-Law 361/2018 establishes that the Cuban peso is the only legal currency in the territory of that country. For that reason, it is the only one that the citizens of the Caribbean island are obliged to adopt.

Difficulty sending and receiving US dollar remittances from abroad could have pushed such a measure. That situation began during the administration of former US President Donald Trump and escalated due to economic problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Details on the Use of Crypto Assets in Cuba

Transactions with virtual assets may take place between financial institutions, legal entities, and natural persons. However, the Central Bank of Cuba only authorizes people to conduct only some types of operations.

Virtual asset service providers can process financial, exchange and collection, or payment operations in and from the national territory. The Official Gazette says that state agencies and political and social organizations cannot use virtual assets and services operating with them.

The resolution will enter into force on September 15th, 20 days after the publication in the extraordinary Official Gazette. The document states that the Central Bank of Cuba will report on the intrinsic risks of using virtual assets without authorization.

How the Use of Bitcoin Has Evolved in Cuba

In April, the Communist Party of Cuba (PPC) announced that it would include Bitcoin in the new economic guidelines for the period from 2021 to 2026. A state official said that the Caribbean nation would study the use of cryptocurrencies in current economic conditions.

Amid the protests on the island this year, many Cubans donated cryptocurrencies to help people with health vulnerabilities. A group of volunteers from Matanzas, one of the areas most affected by the pandemic, used those assets to buy hygiene, food, and medicine items.

Brazilian Police Seize Almost 600 Bitcoins from a Company Allegedly Operating a Ponzi Scheme

The police officers also seized luxury cars, watches, and cash. The firm promised its customers a 15% return on what they had invested.

The Federal Police of Brazil seized 591 bitcoins, equivalent to USD 27 million, during an investigation of GAS Consultoría Bitcoin. That cryptocurrency company was allegedly operating a scam or Ponzi scheme.

During Operation Kryptos, the police seized 13.8 million Brazilian reais (BRL), equivalent to USD 2.6 million. Likewise, the law enforcement officers found 100 pounds sterling, US dollars, and euros.

In addition, the Brazilian police reported that they seized 21 luxury cars, several high-value watches, and jewelry in recent days. The law enforcement agency believes that this could be the largest seizure of Bitcoin and other assets they have ever made.

Promising a 10% Return to the Investors

The company, which had no registration with the Brazilian cryptocurrency regulatory bodies, was in the Lagos Region, Rio de Janeiro. They established a network to make public offers with an investment contract, promising their customers a 10% return on the invested amount.

The operation took place in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ceará, and the Federal District, where the police arrested five people. Those people arrested included Glaidson Acácio, the owner of the Bitcoin consultancy.

Acácio and the others are facing charges for crimes of fraudulent management, issuance of securities without prior registration, criminal organization, and money laundering. If convicted by the authorities, they could go to jail for 26 years.

The police also explained that the financial transactions of the Acácio company totaled approximately USD 30 million during the last six years. Half of those operations took place in the past 12 months.

A Company Representative Asks the Investors to Be Calm

After the police arrested Acácio, the investors received audios from their representatives on WhatsApp. They asked the users to be calm and told them that they would continue working.

Acácio, through a spokesman, said that he considered that what happened would generate a commotion among all those involved. However, he asked for patience because he knew they would get through that situation.

The owner of GAS told his spokesperson to convey confidence to his customers, especially new ones.

However, the company in question does not have a website or social networks, and the phone available in the Tax Service is out of service.

Acácio Goes from Being a Waiter to a Millionaire in 7 Years

Acácio worked as a waiter in a restaurant until 2014 and accumulated a fortune of over USD 30 million 7 years later.

He lived a luxurious life in mansions with his wife but did not go public on social media.

Acácio’s lawyer considers that the arrest of the businessman was a surprise for him and those involved. Although having BRL 20 million may be an exaggeration, that does not necessarily mean that the money comes from illegal activity, he said.

There are Street Protests in Favor of the Businessman

Among those taking to the streets to protest demanding Acácio’s freedom were many GAS investors and consultants. Most of them crowded in front of the Red Globo television channel to expose the case of the alleged Ponzi scheme.

The investors said that neither Acácio nor the company had committed any crime. They argued that the firm had paid them their funds on time and even in advance while operating. Of course, the authorities must decide what will happen to those arrested.

According to Analyst Lyn Alden, Bitcoin Mining Uses Less Than 0.1% of Global Electric Power

The energy consumption of the Bitcoin network is lower than that of Google, YouTube, and Facebook. The analyst believes that the media are giving sensationalistic reports due to their ignorance about Bitcoin.

Financial analyst and strategist Lyn Alden once again dealt with criticism against Bitcoin. She presented a report in which she estimated that cryptocurrency mining uses less than 0.1% of global energy.

The electrical engineer believes that this figure indicates that the energy expenditure of Bitcoin is not as high as people think. For that reason, mining the pioneering cryptocurrency would pose no global problem.

She noted that the blockchain’s design prevents it from using more power than the advantage it gives to its many users.

The Mining of Precious Metals Consumes Twice the Energy of Bitcoin

Alden determined the percentage of energy expenditure of the Bitcoin network based on data from the University of Cambridge. The researchers calculate the maximum annualized rate of Bitcoin spending at less than 95 TW/h, which is consistent with current data.

The University of Cambridge even noted that Bitcoin only accounted for 0.27% of the planet’s electricity consumption in 2019. Galaxy Digital stated that banks and gold production systems consume twice as much energy as Bitcoin.

Regardless of the electricity consumption level of Bitcoin, Alden considers it a necessary expense resulting in greater security. The more energy the blockchain uses, the more secure it will be against most attacks.

The Benefits of Bitcoin Outweigh the Cost of Energy

Regarding the security the network gains due to its energy consumption, Alden also evaluated the incidences of this expense. She did so based on the growth of Bitcoin and the benefits its use would bring in the longer term.

She thinks that energy consumption would only reach a few tenths above 1% of global use if the network exceeded 100 million users. On the contrary, if the grid did not grow much compared to current levels, its energy use would stagnate and decline to almost 0%.

Therefore, Alden believes that Bitcoin’s energy consumption will never exceed its long-term advantage. Besides, she mentioned the comparison according to which Bitcoin uses more energy than some countries.

Alden said that Google, YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Amazon, Christmas lights, household dryers, private jets, and the zinc industry, among others, do so as well.

Sensationalist Campaign Due to Ignorance about Bitcoin

The analyst refuted the body of opinion holding that Bitcoin uses too much energy, does not use it efficiently, or could cause a climate disaster.

According to Alden, all these criticisms are part of a sensationalist media campaign taking advantage of the ignorance about Bitcoin. She mentioned cases of apocalyptic news predicting that the planet’s energy will run out due to the power consumption of Bitcoin.

The financial strategist added that the media continue to publish such miscalculations even though Bitcoin’s energy use is almost irrelevant globally. She stated that she does not understand how journalists can make such big mistakes.

Alden said it usually comes down to people not understanding the growth process that the network undergoes. Besides, she stressed that it is easier to sensationalize things for page views or political gains.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority Allows Binance to Offer Its Services Again

The regulator released an update to clear the name of the exchange, but the company must still wait for prior written consent. Although the update by the FCA was good news, Binance still does not have any specific date on which to resume its operations.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently authorized the Binance cryptocurrency exchange to operate in the UK. In June, the regulator warned consumers that Binance could not conduct any regulated activity in the European country.

At that time, Binance did not provide enough information to the FCA about its business operations, its corporate structure, and how retail consumers used their products. Likewise, the FCA also instructed the firm to remove all financial advertising and promotions.

However, the exchange for Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies told the financial regulator it would collaborate to comply with the legislation of the UK.

Binance told its customers the FCA’s warning did not have a direct impact on its online services. It added that its relationship with its users has not changed.

In recent months, the exchange has come under scrutiny by officials from several countries. These include the United States, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan.

The pressure on Binance has led them to look for a person with more experience in regulatory matters to be their CEO. That may have happened due to the obstacles that different public agencies have put in their way.

FCA Says that It is Not Capable of Supervising Binance

Binance can continue to work in the UK after the Financial Conduct Authority solved all its problems. The regulator released an update to clear the name of Binance two months after restricting some of its operations.

The FCA admitted that it could not adequately supervise the Binance exchange. However, the regulator added that the firm was still unable to conduct regulated business in the UK. In other words, the company must wait for the prior written consent of the FCA.

The supervision notice, published on the official FCA website, reads that it is impossible to supervise Binance effectively due to its commitment. That is particularly of concern since the firm belongs to a global group offering complex and high-risk financial products. That poses a significant risk to consumers.

The Opinion of Binance about the Procedures by the FCA

Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, described what has happened in the UK as positive progress, slow but sure.

The FCA noted that Binance has fully met all aspects of its requirements. In addition, they said that they are still collaborating with the FCA to solve any pending issues that may exist.

Zhao added that they are committed to working with the regulators and legislators as the cryptocurrency ecosystem grows and evolves. The objective is to develop policies that protect consumers, encourage innovation, and advance our industry.

While that update by the FCA was good news to Binance, things are still unclear to users. The UK regulator did not specify which products Binance users could use in the country. It also did not mention any specific date from which users could resume using the exchange.

Which Country between the United States and China Has the Most Influence on the Cryptocurrency Market?

The nature of government that differentiates the United States and China seems to give the Asian country more weight. Chinese miners feel the government will not change its position, which is why many of them have bet on the United States.

The United States and China are currently at the forefront of technology worldwide. An important achievement is the cryptocurrency market, in which important sectors of the economy move. Beijing seems to have more influence in this scenario, which allows questioning the preparedness of the United States to dominate that new financial world.

The North American country carries considerable weight in the field of digital currencies, especially regarding institutional investments. However, its influence is not as strong as people think, which is apparent in state decisions.

Regarding China’s announcements about Bitcoin, they shake that market. On the other hand, the US Infrastructure Law went unnoticed about its influence on the price and trading of digital currencies.

Will the Cryptocurrency Market Do What China Says?

Although China is now a cryptocurrency-free country, its word came to dominate the cryptocurrency market. When the state television of the Asian country praised cryptocurrencies, the price of Bitcoin would skyrocket. On the contrary, if an official referred to them in a derogatory way, its value would plummet.

All of that remained until the recent ban on mining in that country. Some measures caused the Bitcoin hash rate to drop but did not affect its price as expected. However, the leading economic power does not seem to have as much influence as the Asian country.

One of the clearest examples is the case of the US Infrastructure Law. Although it is theoretically a defeat for cryptocurrencies, it did not have the most feared impact. Bitcoin seeks to break the resistance at USD 50,000 and make the entire cryptocurrency market emerge.

China has more influence than the United States on the cryptocurrency market, but it is hard to explain the reasons. One of the most likely could be the nature of government that differentiates both countries.

The Rigidity of the Chinese Government about Bitcoin Mining

The democratic order can work in the United States thanks to the division of powers, at least in these cases. Defenders can appeal, lobby, and correct, which allows repealing laws in future terms.

In China, everything depends on the decisions by the Central Committee of the Communist Party on the cryptocurrency market. A few people introduce bills to the legislature for their approval, generally with all the votes.

Chinese miners have little hope of the government changing its position, which is why they quickly complied with the ban. Most of them disconnected and sold their machines while others migrated.

That contrasts with the existing alternation in the United States, where different representatives without a centralized ideology can be lobbying vehicles. That seems to have been the bet of the disadvantaged entrepreneurs in the cryptocurrency market.

Cryptocurrencies Should Not Depend on Any Power

The target of the cryptocurrency market is to be independent of China and the United States regardless of their influence. When China decentralized Bitcoin mining, it inadvertently did a favor to cryptocurrencies.

No government can threaten cryptocurrencies in that area, as the banning of mining in China nullifies the possibility of a 51% attack. In other words, cryptocurrencies are becoming immune after just a decade of existence, a trend that continues to strengthen.
